#BlackBoxDown
As someone who doesn't know much of anything about aviation I appreciate these little animations so that idiots like me can enjoy these interesting stories too
I agree with Gus, this is such a frustrating incident. To see SO many redundancies in place to avoid these types of mid-air incidents, and to see every single one of them treated with such a lack of care that somehow they still managed to cause a collision. It's infuriating to think that not only did they crash their own plane and passengers, but that they also knocked another plane that had done nothing wrong out of the sky as well.
The Excel-Air flight landed at a military base with no casualties. So they only crashed the other plane, not their own.
It just goes to show that there is no such thing as "idiot-proof". Stupidity will always find a way.
@@SgtHolton Wow, it somehow got even worse. Consolation is to be found in the passengers that survived due to that though.

I listened to your recent episodes and ypu were always talking about this new animated short. I am suprised. It is really great and very clear. Please make more.
Having them climb out of their bubbles was a nice touch that gives it even more emotion.
I'm with Gus. Those pilots forgot such a fundamental rule that could've have saved lives despite the loss of ATC guidance and loss of TCAS.
Whilst I know AJ loves this. I love it too! These are just an amazing story telling with the animation. Plus we all love Chris and Gus. What a combo!
Love the series! Would be helpful to note in the title or description which podcast episode number the video is partnered with or if it’s supplementary content.
I don't know why, but these are very relaxing to watch
I had one very near miss about 15 years ago. I was a passenger in a helicopter travelling in mid Wales. Suddenly the pilot did a very sharp bank as an RAF Tornado came shooting up in an almost vertical climb missing us by no more than 100 metres. The helicopter got caught in the slipstream and took about 10 seconds to stabilise. Turns out the RAF practice low level bombing practices in this area and have NO active radar or proximity warning systems. Only our pilots mark 1 eyeball and sharp reflexes saved us.
This was awesome. Love the podcast, and looking forward to more animations!
Cxx
I love their avatars in this, someone did a great job. I always can't wait to see RT members drawn in differnt ways: old and new AH animated, RTAA, now this
F
I love Gus coming out of his bubble to say "EVEN numbers!" Perfect. XD These animations are very cool, and I especially like this one; it illustrates all the little bits of the story really well. I think the TCAS is such a cool bit of technology, and the way it was animated was fun. :3
Just wanted to say that I love these animations for Black Box Down! I haven't listened to much of the podcast yet, but I will be soon!
These animations really help to visualize what is happening. I love the ascetic!
I can't express how excited that this channel exists!!! Especially these little animations
Thank you for the animation! I just listened to this episode for the first time yesterday, and getting to watch the animation for it now was super interesting!
What episode is this from?
Couple of errors on the labels in the cockpit but not too bad.
I love these animations, really cool to see some kind of visual to a podcast I have listen to already
I could watch these all day, thank you.
So silly but I love the intro where they look happy, then sad as they read the title. Because it's a podcast about airplane problems which are always tragic or at least dangerous
"Animated or not!" This is great stuff, tragic, but great!
Probably a bad idea for my anxiety but currently watching this on a plane.
I wish you a safe flight!
Oh no, have a safe flight! (Hey, at least it's statistically safer than driving!)
Check if your plane has a bad attitude. 🤣🤣🤣
Did you die?
@@psychopompous489 haha no I survived.
One of my favorite podcasts.
i LOVE these animations and i love black box down. i demand more!!!
I would highly recommend looking in to the Uberlingen mid air collision. It happened in 2002, when there were some issues with ATC as well as some confusion with regards to who has higher authority, TCAS or ATC. It is made even more tragic by the fact that one of the planes involved was basically transporting a lot of children.
Animated Gus and Chris are so cute! Those goggles.
Favorite podcast by far and I love these visual animations to compliment the podcast.
The visuals help, Really help
I love the concern on their faces when the title shows up.
Love these animations!
I love the podcast, I JUST 'prescribed' to this CZcams channel - I am now complete. 💗
These aviation graphics are spot-on! Well done to the animator!
Need to animate full episodes!!!
Can’t wait to see more animated episodes!
This is really interesting!
So this was the plane equivalent of driving on the wrong side of the road.
these are actually really interesting to listen to, think ive found a new hobby
fantastic
Technically all the numbers are even, even when you abbreviate it 370 still technically even. Semantics as they have every right to be mad at all the things that needed to go wrong at the same time here.
The system is down? Someone call Strongbad. The Cheat is throwing light switch raves again.
I wonder if they will touch other mid air collisons such as the one in la where a small private propeller plane got lost and slammed head first into a jet when it flew into resteicted airspace or when a student plane hit a jet. Or a more infamous one, when a fighter jet clips a jumbo jet causing it to crash
It's insane how many things can go wrong during a flight and yet air travel is still the safest mode of transport.
Right?! Insane!
There’s animations are so handy
What episode is this clip from?
Black Box Down, hey Gus I have been trying to find this CZcams channel from the Roosterteeth channel but there is no links there. I would really help if you could find this channel through RT's homepage under the "Playlist", or "channels" tab.
Putting aside for a moment, the fact that they were flying at an odd altitude despite their direction, the lack of knowledge proved by their inability to use the transponder makes me agree with Gus that they were at fault. They were at fault, or whoever allowed these obviously unqualified people to fly the plane were at fault
So, newer pilots on unfamiliar equipment, lack of proper procedure, lack of common sense and lack of communication. Holy smokes.
Listening to all the failsafes in place and procedures to avoid this sort of thing, you'd think this would be impossible! And yet...
That’s person call him terrorist is absolutely right because I live in the uk n a lot of ppl call us terrorist without knowing the actual facts that’s call in Europe freedom of expression
Best way to avoid a collision? Don’t fly on planes. Too many crazies on airplanes today. Fist fights on airplanes is really dumb.
there waz a similar accident to this wear the plain sheered of the wing of a 737 und little plain had to be landed at military aire-porté untt de-Tainéđ
Really well done and the visuals help convey the story. However the point about the pilots being at the wrong flight level and therefore at fault is not entirely fair.
Remember that Air Traffic Control (ATC) cleared them to fly at that level. Under Instrument Flight Rules, pilots have a reasonable expectation that their clearance altitude should be free of any conflicting traffic, that is ATC’s responsibility while in controlled airspace. I’ll add to that as well that the pilots could not simply have changed their altitude when they felt like it, they would have to request it through ATC and then be cleared to the higher/lower altitude. So it’s not simply a case of just going up or down to the hemispherical standard levels. Even if your flight plan says you’ll climb or descend at a certain point in flight, you cannot actually do this until cleared to do so by ATC. The exception to this requirement is when pilots follow the actions required of a TCAS Resolution Advisory as described in the video.
The pilots clearly made a substantial error by not having their transponder in an appropriate mode for their flight but it’s important to remember that these accidents rarely occur due to a single, isolated fault. I’m not familiar with the specific incident or transponder fitted to this aircraft but it’s interesting that ATC was not able to alert the crew to the inappropriate transponder mode while they were seemingly radar identified at some point during the flight.
While I agree that it was ultimately the pilot’s fault for making the most egregious errors, this is certainly an interesting case where all of these issues in concert were responsible for causing the accident
I wonder if these jet pilots sleep at night
It’s really hard to tell what is going on without animations
Anyone feel like Subway after this?
Is it weird this makes me feel safer I'm relation to air travel
hi
❤🛫
So much incompetence in one tale...
Anyone else having a problem were randomly it says the video cant be played the current quality no matter what one you change it to? Its only this video and the one on RT's channel that got uploaded doing it. Is susan mad at them?
Gus, love the podcast but I have to disagree. I’m an air traffic controller and I put the majority of the blame on the controller in this situation. Aircraft fly at wrong altitude for direction all the time and if it’s the last altitude issued by the controller, then the pilot must stay at that altitude until told otherwise. We coordinate it all the time with other controllers without ever mentioning it to the pilots. As a matter of fact, in our facility flying at “wrong height for flight” at FL390 and above no longer has to be coordinated. Anyway, just my two cents.
The american agency could find no fault by the american crew, what a shocker...
