Join these three Adventure Riders as they go to the heart of the Australian Outback and venture in some of the most remote and inhospitable country that the land down under has to offer.
In this vid, 4 Riders leave Perth on this first stage of the journey. One Rider returns to home within 48 hours because his bike is not quite set up for serious Outback travel. The remaining 3 continue on to a tiny community in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

I used to fly to Wiluna for work, then bash off into the bush in a 4WD. The editing and your laconic narration makes it seem like you made it there easily, but I can assure the viewers that it is a faaarken long way from anywhere, and a hell of a trip to undertake. Of that, I'm sure👍

JP got so pissed off having to lug extra fuel around he has decided to get a long range tank for his AT. Awkward looking (will look like a Transformer lol) but will give him the range he needs for some serious Outback travel. Thanks for the positive feedback.

I have a 2006 1200GS. For me I think it’s the perfect bike. I’m a big bloke so the size of the 1200GS isn’t intimidating. I recently rode from Brisbane to the tip of Cape York return and like you I still felt refreshed at the end of the day in the saddle. Overall a brilliant reliable comfortable bike that can do ‘most’ things.

Hey Steve, looks like a few challenges to come mate. I worked the mines in that part of the country as a young man Woody Woody, Telfer, Wiluna, Mt Kieth, Laverton, I liked it back then, not sure if I'd like the heat now in my old age. Funny story about a big centipede , me and a mate who was from UK were riding across the Nullabor heading for the MotoGP at Phillip Island, we pulled off on a side track away from the road about 500 metres or so to make camp. I said to my mate I'm not going to put my tent up, I'm just going to set my cot up under the stars for the night. He said "What about the snakes and creepy crawlies" I said arrrh that's a load of bull they tell the tourists, there's nothing out here can hurt you. Only need to worry about crocodiles and there's none of them down south. So we set our cots up as the sun was just dropping over the horizon. After a feed, we crawled into our sleeping bags on our cots and watched the last of the small fire die down. A while later I noticed my mate wriggling around in his sleeping bag and I said "Whats wrong are you playing up with mother palmer and her five daughters in there"? He said "Theres something crawling all over me inside my sleeping bag" by now he is whacking the outside of his sleeping bag trying to subdue what ever was wriggling around inside the bag. Finally he pulled the zip down and an 8 inch long huge brown centipede ran out and over his face, jumped to the ground and ran off in a blur of legs. He said "What the bloody hell was that!" I told him "It's just a centipede, no need to worry, they're harmless, we used to play with them when we were kids (which we truthfully did), he's more scared of you than you should be of him". Anyway after he settled down we had a good nights sleep with no other dramas. Next day we were getting fuel and my mate was telling a couple of grey nomads about his centipede experience. When he came back to the bikes he said "That bloke said those bloody centipedes can kill you!" He spent the rest of the trip in his tent with the zipper up every night, always checked his boots and kit for crawlies. He doesn't trust me if I tell him anything about our wildlife, even now some five years later.😇
Hi B A B, interesting story…thanks for sharing. I was bitten by a snake in North Queensland as an 18 year old Soldier…the bite nearly killed me. I was unconscious before I reached hospital. I had to spend the next 20 years in the Army going bush on a regular basis and had to overcome my fear of snakebite. If I thought about a the creepy crawlies that exist here in Oz none of us would ever go camping. I’ll continue to take my chances and enjoy the great outdoors. Overseas tourists must think we are a tough mob here in Oz. No fear lol. Thanks for continued support.

Back in the mid 60's in the Gascoyne we came upon an "oasis" of gum trees and grass
among the gibber and gidgee country. I happened to pull a bit of bark from a tree and
a centipede over a foot long ran out, they were under the bark of every tree, so the boss
and I took turns shooting them with my .22 rifle, I have never seen them so big anywhere
else.
Got stung by a small one recently, that hurt, I sucked the venom out, then poured alcohol over
the wound, instant relief! I keep clear of the buggers now!!
You have to love out back Australia and the good old cups canteen, where would you be with out it. lol Could you also, at some stage, give a quick rundown on the bike setups and the luggage systems used and why they chose it? Thank you for the video.
Woooo hooooo what a great way to celebrate 100k! 😁👍🏁🏆 Waaaaah I wish I was back on those trails again! I usually get around 6k+kms on my D606 but it’s definitely a lighter bike for sure. Yep I remember the fuel stress before getting a bigger tank. Makes such a big difference to the ol’ anxiety levels! 🤞😁🍀⛽️ Can’t wait for the next episode! Carry on….😁👍🏁🏍💨
A grate ride Steve and for the bikes run down l have 68k on 16 GSA and love it like a quick run down on the Honda at end if the trip.

we missed crossing Simpson last year due to covid and this year it's pretty wet out centre so we going up to the cape
instead it's not same as red centre but better than sitting at home thanks mate 👍

I saw you ride it through those flooded roads that would have stressed me out and you were cool as. I bet you can easily pilot it anywhere you feel like.
That ride was a little different. I was committed to see it thru. The only option was a 2,000km diversion all on blacktop. Bugger that! Next vid out next week.

Gotta love the outback of Australia. Couldn't believe the friggin size of those Ant nests. No wonder you want to set up camp before sunset! I'm sitting here with a buggered back feeling slightly envious of your travels......No way could i pick up a downed enduro bike let alone the big beemer at the moment. Ah, the joys of old injuries coming back to remind Us of the limitations of the human body. Keep it upright Steve!

My bucket list wish is to cross the Outback. Thanks so much for the videos, very informative and encouraging. I own a BMW 850 GS, but I think I'd prefer a smaller and lighter bike. I am thinking of doing it solo, but who knows. Cheers.

I use the Mitas E07 tyre on the rear of my DR and I regularly get 8000 kms out of one of those.
Chris was running a Tractionater for this ride. He’s used them before. It takes a lot of trial and error to find tyres that suit. Thanks for watching.

Yeah, probably too lower gear at the time or not enough revs. You gotta be careful when you’re dealing with 105HP. I sometimes get it wrong. Thanks for watching

Hi Rob, hahaha, I don’t claim to be no hero. I haven’t included my previous R1200 which had 140,000 on it before written off, nor the km I’ve done on the DR650 nor the XT600 prior to that. But, in my defence, there are a lot of Schmo’s out there who haven’t been passed the Shops and are probably impressed with 100,000 on the one bike. I do have a lot of confidence in the engineering behind the BMW. I should be on their payroll. Robyn Morrit (a local legend here in WA) has put half a million km on a 1150GS and it is still going strong. 👍
Do you remember the days when on-coming traffic would slow down, for your benefit and theirs ?

@@mongreldogproductions I still slow down and often even stop for oncoming traffic. Mainly to protect my own windscreen! Land Rover screens are expensive.

Hi Michael, these big adventure bikes are a handful off road and a lot of guys get caught up in the romance of the idea of touring this wide brown land. The reality is that a lot of Riders are out of their league. I love touring Australia’s Outback on the R1200 because it is so powerful and comfortable to ride. Hi Brian O, we left Perth on 20 April and returned 5 May...a 16 day ride. We copped a bit of rain (not much) while in Central Australia.
A fascinating and engaging look into your wonderful world of outback exploration. I recently bought an old 1200GS and it's a heavy old beast unladen. What sort of all up weight are you carrying with all the gear? Cheers.
I’ve never weighed it…too scared. I carry 9 litres of water, 4 days worth of food (quite a lot of tinned stuff) and all the usual camping crap (tent, sleeping bag, groundsheet etc). Probably about 40kgs of equipment plus the weight of the bike…maybe tipping 280kgs I guess. It is a handful in the snotty stuff. Thanks for watching.

Hi Zarb, i had to give this some thought...I've been pretty lucky. I did have a couple of mice (from the plague out in NSW) stowaway in my vest. I left my bike in storage a couple of days later and picked it up a month later. The mice were trapped, ate my emergency rations (fruit and nut mix), died and then stunk out my gear for the next week. Other than that I haven't had too many problems. I always shake out my boots before pulling them on in the morning and always check inside the helmet. I've had the odd bee sting or two over the years, usually on the neck. Ouch!
What year model is your bike Steve? Interesting point about the front suspension, mine did same and I know of quite a few others. Just wondering if this is an ongoing design flaw.
Hi IATPMOA, 2016. The front shock failure is common on a lot of the Safaris that I do. Maybe they picked up their game (BMW) during production later on.

Hi Bazza, stiff uni joint. They are an item that cant be serviced. I could get a rebuild that came with a warranty for $750 or buy new for $1,500. I said to the mech 'what would you do?'. He said he has never had a complaint with the rebuilds but for what I do, he would recommend i buy new...so I did. Should give me trouble free motoring for another 100,000km.

Man you do some awesome rides, after watching your vids I went and got a 2013 1200GSA (oil cooled) what tyres do you run for these types of trips?

@@mongreldogproductions Thanks for that, yeah absolutely loving it on the road so far, I was hesitant going from super sport to a GSA but surprisingly the big handles like its on rails. Yet to do some dirt but ill get there.
@@Holdmybeer111 My advice, take small steps and dont be discouraged. These things are a HANDFUL in the snotty stuff but are only limited by the riders experience and the size of their gonads. Enjoy!

Steve, have you or Chris re-jetted your DR's and the associated airbox mods? I have purchased a DR with that already done and curious if its really necessary for the type of touring your doing. I'm suspicious about increased fuel consumption and the increased power not really a necessity.
No mods to carby’s…standard. Im not a big fan of too many mods other then the practical ones, ie, suspension and fuel range. The bike has enough horsepower to do the job as is. Thanks for watching.

Hi Globetrotter, interesting question. If I was to post up a thread of ‘I’m goin’ for a ride, who wants to come?’, I would get no responses. A lot of Riders I know reckon I’m too ‘hard core’ and it would result in their death or injury (hasn’t happened yet). I’ll ride with anybody who is available. Sometimes, it’s best to stick with the group you know. Good question, thanks for your interest.

Curious what speeds do guys average on the black stuff and the dirt out there ?
You know what, the R1200 is such a comfortable bike you can sit on highway speeds even on the dirt. That can be a problem sometimes cause you’re travelling faster than you should be. In a perfect world we would sit on 100kph on the highway and 90kph on the dirt. I enjoy travelling with ‘older’ blokes now cause they tend to travel a bit slower than I’m used to. What year is your GS? I have the opportunity to pick up a 2010 GSA that only has 2900 miles or I think around 4500 km. He is asking 10k US and I think its a good deal looking at other bikes for sale.
2016...120,000km on the clock now. I had a 2009 model that did 140,000 Adv km before being written off after a fire under the seat. At 2,900 miles, it isn't even run it yet. I dont know what the second hand bike market is like there but here in Oz the price seems a little high for a 12 year old bike. ($15,000AUD). Here in Oz now the market value would be $7,750 - $9,200. He had an earlier bike (same model) that did 100,000km. Not bad for a single cylinder thumper.

DR650….haven’t changed design since about 1996. A real tractor of the desert. Very popular here in Oz as a very capable adventure bike.
