- Join me as I continue to return home to Perth by riding across Australia thru the arid heart of the Outback after completing the 2021 BMW GS Safari Enduro. This journey covers 5,000km from East to West and should take 7-8 days.
In this vid, I find myself stranded at Giles Creek which is flowing and too deep to cross. One attempt to cross fails so I have little option but to wait it out in the hope that I get assistance to push the bike across the Creek or the level drops enough to allow me to continue my journey westward.
Grab ya gear; Lets go!

You are a very smart man!! Not only an excellent rider but more common sense than I have seen in a while. This gives me some good tips to thing about when riding solo.
You sir have the patience of a monk. Always great to see the way you think things through , great lessons for all outback travelers.
10psi to 45psi with a hand pump is an massive effort. But like you said "doing nothing is not an option" . Cheers 4 sharing these videos with us all.
Steve, never a dull moment in your adventures that's for sure! Stuck by a flowing river, watching it recede and listening to it rain overnight in a tent must have kept you up all night. Thank goodness for the help you received pushing the GSA across the river. Glad you checked in with the station as well, that was proper! This series was very instructional Steve, learned alot from you on how to prepare for a long distance adventure ride. Thoroughly enjoyed this series mate!
Hi Rick, Yeah, I took a risk with this series. My thoughts would be that viewers dont wanna listen to people rambling on about dribble that doesn't interest them. Then I thought 'Its a day in the life of". It seems to have worked. You know yourself, not every Adventure is this good. It turned out to be a Hamburger with the lot!
Thanks Steve. I know there's a stack of work (and fun) in just making the trip....and then there's a stack of work in making the video. I loved the 'cool headed' approach to the challenges that pop up along the way......and glad to see you were using the bike to supply the power to the compressor this time. Great show mate....loved it.
This was an awesome 3 part series....thanks for all the tips and time it took to film. Nicely done & god bless!
H HR Mac, thanks for the positive feedback and glad you enjoyed the journey. Ho, ho, ho!
Im one of those "young grasshoppers" that you talk about and just started adventure bike riding about 8 months ago, watching your videos is a huge help and learn so much. Loved the series, thanks for sharing with us.
Hi AM, glad you are getting something outta the vid(s). Education AND entertainment. Enjoy the new World that Adventure Riding brings with it.
Another EPIC ride! Thanks for sharing Steve. 2 things ya need........ALL the gear and some idea! not many more wiser words have been spoken.
Mate, I've REALLY enjoyed this series. I can't believe the amount of punctures you had to deal with!!! Your experience showed through when you turned back at that river crossing and stayed the night until the cavalry arrived. I would have most likely panicked, tried to cross and got myself bogged... Learned a bit from this... Thanks heaps for sharing :-)
Happy to have helped. Glad you enjoyed the journey (without getting YOUR feet wet).
@@mongreldogproductions hahaha :-)
Another great GS Safari Steve! I've been avoiding watching this series until now, so that I could binge watch it all at once.
Glad to see that even while things in the world are a going crazy, people are still getting out there! 👍
Binge watch it - hahaha thats exactly what i did. Awesome vids and great learning curve for old grasshoppers that are kicking off. Thanks for the vids, sharing your experiences and giving us something to work towards. Cheers
What a great series. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Good it ended safely. Cheers from Aotearoa
Truly amazing stuff Steve. Great footage over your Giles Creek “stopover”. You have heaps of experience and keeping cool head and thinking things through gets you through. Thanks for sharing your incredible trip. Well done.
Hi Duncan M, and only one of us had to get our feet wet! Glad you enjoyed the journey. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing this epic adventure Steve, I always enjoy coming along for the ride with MDP. All the best and ride safe.
You are a bloody beauty Steve. Always get home but the adventure to get there is brilliant. Love watching and learning!!!!!
Great series of videos until the end. I always admire your calm demeanor even in the most frustrating situations. I’ll watch this space for your next adventure!👍
Fantastic outcome to an awesome, and inspiring adventure.
Once again another excellent series to watch Steve,. Awesome advice for novice and experienced riders alike.
Always like how you don't rush into things, methodic and steady always wins the race.
Gotta get it right the first time...sometimes you dont get a second chance. Better that young Grasshoppers learn from my (our) mistakes then making the same mistakes as we did. Glad you like the vid(s).
To seal the bead, I always carry a tie down ratchet tie down strap. You wrap it around the circumference of the Tyre, ratchet it down and it spreads the tyre out to the beads. Never had it fail to work.
Hi RB, I know of the technique and had limited success. Have a look at this vid of mine from 2020.
czcams.com/video/FVmWXvl3Q2M/video.html
Thanks for watching.
@@mongreldogproductions Fair enough. I have had success with truck, 4wd, car, motorbike and even aircraft tyres. I guess I have been lucky or you were just unlucky. Of course, sods law will now dictate that my next tyre change in the field will not work. Thanks for the reply and I enjoy your content.
Brilliant video Steve, never a dull moment mate! I have spent a lot of time out around the Laverton district working the Windarra mine back in the early 80's, great country but a very harsh environment, I rode a 1977 BMW R100/7 back then, it performed very well on the gravel roads. Stay safe mate!
Wow ! I didn't think it could get any better than the last video. Australia really is a beautiful place, well done Steve.
Smashing trilogy of videos...packed with adventures and some great tips...well done and thanks
Glad you enjoyed the content…thanks for watching.
A great series of video's Steve. Really enjoyed them. Keep up the good work.
Really enjoy these videos. You're a trooper. Keep the videos coming!
Outstanding mate what a trip, looking forward to your next trip
Love your work & your commentary plus you have a great smile. Onya.
A great watch! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent work, I've done that ride the other way and had some of the same fun and games! Nice to see it all again. :-)
Wendy and I very much enjoyed your latest adventure.
Love your story telling and of course you had lots of interesting content.
Really enjoyed seeing those roads again which I travelled for work and play many years ago.
Keep safe and all the best
Hi AD, Glad you enjoyed your trip down Memory Lane. Thanks for watching.
No better series out there Steve , great job 👏🏾
What a fantastic trip mate, really love watching your adventures. Rgds from the UK
Glad to hear you got through and thanks for sharing
Thanks Steve for a great series. Awesome video work.
Great series of clips mate, true adventuring
Excellent videos mate, you’ certainly have the gear and a lot of ideas. Calm in all situations and still with a smile, inspirational.
I’m always looking forward to those famous words ‘grab your gear and let’s go!
Stay safe!
Cheers 🍻
Glad you enjoy the Channel content. Thanks for watching.
Excellent series of videos, over the years your content, video angles choice of backymusic and humour have got better and better.
Thanks for bringing us along on your travels.
All the best for Christmas and 2022 👍
Hi John, when i look at some of my earlier work i cringe. Thanks for the positive feedback. Ho, Ho, Ho!
Great series! What an epic journey.
Steve:
Legend !
Inspiring !
Thanks for sharing & putting it out there
Showing us the deskbound the mostly unseen interior of our great country
Many Thanks
Mick
Hi Mick, happy to help. Thanks for watching.
Grasshopper, you always stay with the bike
Once again, thoroughly enjoy this and your humour and mindset mate. Absolutely cannot get enough
Hi Kurtis, thanks for the positive feedback. If you found humour in the vid(s) it was accidental lol.
Steve this series of vids has been epic! I admire your tenacity and being in the moment… Making good decisions and sharing hard won advice. Be prepared…
Priceless!
Grab your gear… Where next?
Next? Watch this space!
Great video's well done , its great to see all those places i may never see in person , great bikes , i'll definatly watch these all again thanks 👍
Glad you enjoy the Channel content. Thanks for watching.
Really great series of vids Steve! Loads of lessons to be learned from the 'misfortune' of others. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Cheers from a similarly wet South Africa :-)
Hi AM, It's always enjoyable to share the Adventure. If people are entertained then that is a bonus. Thanks for watching.
Great stuff Steve... Loving your work here... Good to see a cool head in challenging situations... Happy Christmas from the UK... 😊
Hi Richard, Thanks and...
Ho, Ho, Ho!
Hello Steve from the UK, you are one tenacious fellow, everyone who watches your videos must learn something from you along the way, I have to be sure, determination and the will to live no matter what gets thrown at you and you have had some shit thrown, some stuck and some just ran off, well done and stay safe, have a good Christmas and all the best for 2022, let’s hope it is better than the last months of crap we have endured. D
Hi D, Thanks for the positive comments, I've been around the block a few times and i guess I've learned a few things along the way. Enjoy your festive season. Ho, Ho, Ho.
I must admit I was worried for ya, but as usual you've prevailed. Good work. 👍
Excellent series of vids Steve. Makes a trip down to the Crooked Carrot look easy (which it is of course, until I have to decide what to eat).
Now that’s proper adventure Steve👏🏼👏🏼👊👊
Yes it is/was. Thanks for watching.
Crackn series, all the gear and some idea plus the drive to make it it happen🤙
A great series, looking forward to your next trip ! Can’t believe the punctures you copped, you just smile and soldier on !
Hi RW, tyres take a real pounding in the Outback. I dont wanna come back reincarnated as a tyre. Punctures are par for the course. Thanks for watching.
Spot-On trip as always Mate, AD
What an adventure. Awesome series, thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed the journey.
Love your take on things. Thanx for sharing. looking forward to the next videos. Greetings South Africa.
Hi Peter, Thanks for the positive feedback. Watch this space.
Excellent videos mate. Love watching them👍
Hi Neville, glad you enjoy the Channel content. Thanks for taking the time to comment. 😀
Hi Steve & thanks for bids. If you haven’t bought a new pump yet, here’s a suggestion:
Rocky Creek MotoPressor Pocket Pump
€37,90 (€45,86 - incl. VAT) VAT price is for European Union Customers)
This great little pump is ULTRA compact because it has been stripped down to its essentials. This pocket pump only weighs 580 gram and fits in the palm of your hand.
Where almost all mini pumps on the market only pump 3,5 bar (50psi) this great little pump delivers 6,9 bars/100 Psi which is what you really need to properly seat a tyre bead after a repair or replacement…
I have no commercial interest in this - I copied the link from your CZcams colleague, ItchyBoots! Stay safe🕊
Hi ER, I have already replaced the pump. I'm hoping it doesn't get the same use as the previous one. Apparently, pumps have 'cycles' (I know that now). I probably over worked it. Glad you liked the vid(s).
I enjoyed watching you work out the problems while you ride. I can't wait for the next video. Don't be afraid to post up some days rides for us. just a trip to lunch would be enjoyed by me.
Watch this space.
Excellent video's, love your work Steve. Goes to show you never never know if you never never go. 😀
You never, never do. A shitty day on a motorbike has gotta be better than a good day at the Office. Thanks for watching.
Steve you are an inspiration to us all.
Glad to be of service!
Nice video, and nice cops. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Take care.
Resilience overload, for sure. You certainly perservere. Hoping to cross the GCR once covid allows me. Great video, and don't stop touring, the puncture kit manufacturers are depending on you.
Legend mate well done, great vid.
Hi ts, thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you liked the vid.
Mate been watching for years thou only just subbed oh well got the in the end I guess. As always Crackn video series for many reasons, the trip itself, the adventures along the way, the education and one thing you should be very proud of is how very well prepared you were for this trip. Whatever happened you were prepared, Great effort that!. Top marks also for your simplistic video, your editing has improved greatly as comes with practice but you keep things short and sweet to keep the story moving and dont get bogged down too much with one part of the trip. When I make my vids I use a lot of camera gear cus thats the way I like to do things & complete respect for your style, couple of cameras and a drone along with brilliant audio to boot. Bloody great looking forward to more adventures and learning to be had. Cheers Kosta
Another great adventure. I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole way through this episode.
That wasnt the effect i was looking for (when I started) but glad you enjoyed the journey.
By far I enjoyed this trip of your the most so far.
Just before the double puncture I was thinking about my previous comments guessing the total number you would have......and then the double puncture AND tire change came!! I've always been a street rider and have plugged a tire or two, but never a tire change. Will have to search out some training opportunities to get up to speed on that for sure!! What a great series of videos this one has been.....so thank you so much for taking us along!!!
Hi Jim, You're not alone when it comes to tyre changing. A lot of Adv Riders dont go solo because they are worried about flats so they travel in small groups (which is a good idea anyway). As long as someone in the group knows how to change a tyre then you're home and hosed. Glad you enjoyed the journey.
Good onya Steve, Love that road - I always stay at those dongas too!!!
Great video and thanks for sharing. Love your adventures. Big bikes are something I admire from a distance :)
Hi SA, glad you like the Channel content. I need a big bike to cover the huge distances. You could do it on a 250 but i doubt I'd be able to stand up afterwards. There will come a time that i will have to downsize but i'm not there yet. Thanks for watching.
@@mongreldogproductions Actually the whole reason I do only short hops per day on the 250 (usually no more than 300km) is that otherwise I'll want to burn the thing when I get off it for the day. And a long highway speed slog on that thing is physically exhausting. So I have been embracing the slow-travel thing. Love having a bike I can pick up easily.
Gnarly stuff Mongrel! Wow wow ! Most impressive
Thanks….glad you like the vid(s).
Thanks Steve, will catch up next year, when i come over for the big lap. But will be in a 4x4 and van.
Another true-blue, no BS episode!
Top series mate enjoyed it, glad to see you teach the grasshoppers about safety 👍.
Merry Christmas brother
Ho, Ho, Ho! Glad you enjoyed the journey.
Only just found your channel mate but the experience and tricks you're showing will be invaluable. You've earnt yourself a new subscriber.
Hi AG, Welcome to the Channel, sit down, strap yourself in, enjoy the ride. Thanks for your Subscription. Watch this space.
looks like you just had a Monday ride. Monday on a Tuesday, midweek Monday, almost end of the week Monday, a end of the week monday..... lol! when it rains it pours... at least you weren't eaten by the river
I am humbled by the way these really long distance riders handled all the issues and then some just like that
kudos the the riders down under
Your the real deal mate! Really enjoy your vids. Ride safe…
Hi BC, Thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you enjoy the journey. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the journey
You're welcome!
Waaaaaah this one made me miss the adventure soooo much! 😂👍🏴☠️ The trials & tribulations of dirt life….epic! Lol when the going gets tough, the tough just keep going! Carry on m8! 💪😁🏍💨
Hi Roz, I gotta admit, this trip certainly wasnt the norm. Still, it makes for good viewing and if it all went according to plan it would be boring. See you on the other side.
What a wonderful series, I may never get to ride there but I get to through these videos...Cheers from New Bern, NC USA!!
Hi RG, I'm always pleased to get a comment from our over seas viewers. It's nice to show off Australia warts and all. Glad you enjoyed the vid(s).
Great series.. You sure do have you share of moments :)
I think the most impressive part of this series is that you took the time to record it, I would have been too busy spitting my lolly.
Perhaps the best tool in your kit is resilience. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Glenn P, I enjoy sharing the Adventure as long as people enjoy watching it. That is one advantage of travelling solo. I can stop and record when it suits me without holding up the remainder of the group. Glad you enjoyed the journey.
Oh my! That was a Big Adventure! Glad you made it home OK - certainly sorts the men from the boys! BMW should be lending you a hand, Mate!! Happy Travels...
Hi SW, yeah, this trip sticks out as one of the more adventurous that I’ve done. You have to do things that make you realise you’re alive! Thanks for watching.
@@mongreldogproductions Was quite the trip - hope people see how keeping your head & trying to calmly figure things out really works, rather than panicking or being too brazen. It's an pretty unforgiving country - I guess you'd take it for granted at your peril. Glad you can still share the lows with the highs & I appreciate it when you say you're scarred - as I'm sure you should be, but many would think you have to make out you're super hard yakka! We are enjoying your Adventures, cheers, Steve!
Great video
Thanks 😊
Great stuff🙂
Respect 👍 Awesome ride, great videos, cheers.
absolutely loving these videos mate, grtz from Japan !!
Thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you like the vids.
G’day Steve, what an adventure. You must have many long hours watching the desert paint dry between events. I’m glad you made it, don’t push your luck. Cheers
Yeah, that’s it’s for the Desert riding season for this year. I’ll have to wait till March/April now. Watch this space.
Really liked your videos mate. Keep riding and stay safe 🙏 👍
Thanks for the positive feedback. Thanks for watching.
Very enjoyable - love your calm approach to solutions. Just like my drone, it appears your drone tends to come along for the ride more than actually being used! Love your style, hope the 8th trip out from the garage is epic and fun, I'm sure it will be! Happy days to you.
Yeah, the drone is a PITA but it does give a different perspective. Watch this space for future adventures.
Just ducking out for smokes is what i tell the wife when I'll be gone for half the day. 😀I'd have to tell her I'm ducking out to do the shopping for a cross country trip like Steve 🤣
Cheers for the video series, as always i really enjoy them 👍
Glad you enjoy the Channel content. You know the irony here…I don’t even smoke lol. Thanks for watching.
@mongrel dog productions
Gee I’m glad you cleared that one up Steve. When you said earlier you were just ducking out for smokes I thought to myself surely not, Steve is much smarter than that. So pleased to hear you don’t smoke
No disrespect to smokers, it is a cruel difficult drug to beat, but it costs to many people their lives far to early.
Incidentally I finally stoped smoking when I was 33, I am now 78 , healthy and still riding a lot
I found it very easy to give up smoking, I did it about 50 times.
Lessons learned, 1. No time ever spent on reconnaissance is ever wasted. 2 PPPPPP, Proper preparation prevents piss poor performance. 3. 2 extra Ps. Don’t panic and be patient. Thanks Steve, really enjoying the channel.
Hi C from K, Glad you enjoyed the journey...and you kept your feet dry the whole time! Regards
Glad you got home Legend' expensive packet of smokes.
Stay safe thanks for sharing your adventures Cheers
You know the irony here…I don’t smoke lol. Glad you enjoyed the journey.
Great series Steve glad you survived to make more vids
Nobody is more glad that I survived than I am. Watch this space.
Glad you made it home! When it was raining overnight I thought you were in trouble!
Yeah, so did I. I thought my stay might have got a bit longer. Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed it very much so Pete from Tas
Many thanks for capturing your adventure on camera in what would have been quite testing situations, make for great footage.
You're welcome!
That's what you call adventure 👍👍👍👍
I admire your attitude!! You never even swore and had ample opportunity. I like to do smaller remote trips on dirt where possible and have on,y a can of tire repair foam and tubes in my tires. All good so far ! My dr 650 would be 100 kg lighter then your GS. Not sure if that helps.
Greta video,thank you!!
I have a DR650 parked in the shed but the R1200 is my weapon of choice for Outback travel. It eats up the big km in relative comfort. Glad you like the vid.
Epic. I drove this road about 20 years ago in a Rav 4. It was raining then as well. Things might have changed since I was there but I found it really handy to carry a few hundred bucks in cash.
Glad you got across the river! I see why you are not wild about Karoo 3s .Really liked this series.
Karro 3's are probably good in certain applications. I'm just convinced it's suitable for most Adv Riding situations. Glad you enjoyed the journey.
What a great example. Don’t panic. Patience. Plan ahead. A good mate you can trust. A great video, with some “Mongrel Dogisms” e.g. “Well nobody’s died yet, but still, it’s early” and “ I’ve still got a few patches left” pls “Doing nothing is not an option” and “All you need is all the gear and some idea…..at least travel with somebody who does”. Magic. I love your videos sir.
Glad you enjoyed the journey.
After watching the last episode, had to watch this one straight away.
Oh wow, the 2WD sedan I saw in the last video.
Some of the stuff i do is smoke n mirrors. Shhhh!
