- This is an unboxing and tone test of a brand new 2021 Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue (R9) in Slow Iced Tea Fade VOS NH. I ran it through my 1981 Marshall JMP 2204 and Marshall 1960ax with Greenbacks. Also decided to use my Waza Tube Amp Expander for attenuation.

Been my dream axe since I first played one in 1998. The R9 is just the best feeling, playing, and sounding guitar ever for me. Your a lucky man.
Blessed to have it and blessed to get a stellar deal.
Congrats! Nice guitar! Always my favorite type of Les Paul. It's the sound I think of when I think Les Paul!
I'm with you. Used it today at church and it was glorious sounding both clean and driven.
That thing is really beautiful. Hope you're enjoying it mate! Cheers
Thank you and Cheers back!
Man, that's a nice specimen. Even the base mahogany has nice ribbons on it. I love my R6 all gold. I'll be hunting an R9 next.
An R6 is definitely on my watch list!
Spectacular guitar... congrats !
Thanks a lot! Rock on!
Beautiful guitar ☺️ Im picking up my R9 murphy lab today I cannot wait to play it ✌️😊
Good choice! Please post a picture and tag me on whatever social media you like. I'd love to see it! @thetweedcouch on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter
Great channel.it was made on my B-day nice sounding guitar
I love it! I've never mentioned this on the channel or the Podcast but I would love to own a birth year or birthday guitar. I have a birth year for one of my kids and am searching for the right one for my other son.
I love these guitars! So cool! They sound so good!
It’s been a go to guitar for gigs ever since. Sounds and feels amazing
This will definitely be my next purchase! Already started the looking part! Lol
Marks Guitar Loft was my pick. Excellent seller and best prices hands down.
That’s a sweet fluffin guitar Dr.T I’m digging the channel man did not know you were a big guitar guy😎
I fluffin love it! And I fluffin love this comment!
The White Falcon is a “big guitar”. This one not so much.
@@richardshone2339 I did buy that guitar because I wanted something that could be seen from outer space.
Beautiful guitar Dr.T. The taper on the volume pots works really nice. If you decide it isn't a keeper, you know where I live and my birth date.
It is quite amazing how well they work. It makes me wonder… why not make all the guitars do this? Pots and caps are cheap.
Just bought my first Gibson!....and now I get it! LOL....... Traditional Pro V in flat black, zebra pickups....on sale $1500......I played Shredder guitars my whole life, and I saw that Gibson and it reminded me of a dirty RatRod car with primer paint, and I HAD to have it.....it just looked so badass, and it's kinda hard to find Gibsons in Flat colors or "heavy metal" paintjobs from the factory.....and the Fret setup was perfect!
That is a STEAL on a great guitar! I love Trad Pros! Welcome to the fam dude. Happy New Gear Day!
Been wanting to buy one for many months, as my last guitar purchase. The wife won’t hear of it, so it will remain a dream. I envy you, man. I hope you’re enjoying that gorgeous guitar.
My wife and I are teachers and we have 2 kids. I saved for 5 years and i still didn’t have enough. I ran into a guy online that was selling these new for 20% less than anywhere else and tax & shipping free. Sometimes you find the deal and can get the approval. Until that day, the marriage is more important. Your priorities are straight and I wish you the best for finding that last guitar purchase.
Thanks for your reply, man! I found a 2021 R9 in iced tea. It was sold in 2022 and then the owner traded it in. I confirmed the serial number with Gibson and they confirmed the year of manufacture, colour, and that it’s an R9. I bought it! It’s in another province and I got free shipping and without provincial tax. I saved $2,500!!!
The local dealer here had reduced the price of theirs, I put a deposit down, then the wife was depressed about it, so I cancelled. A few weeks ago, I was going to buy it, but they cancelled my discount and wouldn’t budge. It was irrelevant to them that I’ve purchased 14 guitars and 2 amps from them in the past 15 years. And they weren’t squires. I.e. a Martin D-18, Gretsch 6120, Taylor K24ce, Strat, Tele, SG, es 335, Epiphone White Fang, Ibanez acoustic, Rickenbaker 330, Les Paul standard, Les Paul Traditional, Les Paul Classic, Taylor 12 string. So much for customer loyalty. Canada market is dominated by one major retailer.
I have 2 sons who may also purchase guitars as they grow older, but they won’t be using their local rip off car salesman dealer.😮
Sorry for the verbage. Point being that your advice worked wonders for me and I appreciate your input.
My R9 arrives in 2 days. I’m stoked as heck and eagerly awaiting its arrival. I like your channel and subscribed. Hoping to see more of your videos in the future.
Take care, and thanks again!
Rock on and play loud. 😎 🎸
Gorgeous guitar.
I think so too! Thanks
Beautiful Guitar Bro , absoultly Love it One day I would like too have one Too :)
It has been a bucket list guitar for about 5 years now and just happened to save enough funds (and get the right deal) to make it happen. Would highly recommend it to any nostalgic tone seeker that can afford it and justify it. For anyone who just can't quite find the $$$$ I'd recommend the new 2021 50's neck Standard... they are so good.
great videos. . you deserve more subs. Keep at it, if you are serious I would look into different types of cameras and lighting, word and vision placement with your thumbnails in your videos,, presentation, etc. Most people probably think that kind of stuff is overrated or not very useful but in social media/ the internet its everything. It is what gets millions of subs vs zero.
even colors in the thumb nail, colors in your videos, and what you wear will make a difference. Look that stuff up I guarantee it will make a difference. Just some tips, but I think your content is great though. Very thorough.
Thanks man. I agree, image is a big deal. Not just the quality of the camera but what actually ends up on camera... and then how processed in post... and how it is marketed to make it click worthy (title & thumbnail). It's a fun hobby and I could probably invest more money and time into camera's, lenses, and lighting but I'm still in the learning phase of how to do it all.
But seriously... thank you for the interest, encouragement, and tips. If you ever run across anything you think I should check out, please send it my way. Email: tweedcouchguitar@gmail.com
Hey Michael, kudos to you. It's nice to see words of encouragement and support for folks less advanced in this world rather than criticism and derision. Tweed Couch Guitar, keep going man and congrats on the R9!
Nice R9 and nice demo!
Glad you enjoyed it. This was one of my first few videos and was learning (still am) the process.
Lovely guitar had the 2016 traditional in iced tea my one had to be sent back to Gibson for a fret job sold it on but now have the epi 59 version very pleased with it, yours is beautiful though, nice buy.
I really was surprised in how nice those Epi 59’s are. Stellar deal for sure… they even have the long tenon.
I have the Epi 59 Les Paul also & it's killer!!!
I have the same amp in a 212 combo! 1978 JMP 2104 master model. 👍👍 on this vid! Subbed!
I love this amp. When I stopped full time touring I thought about going to a combo but there is just something magical for me in this cabinet, this head, and these tubes.
@@tweedcouch Absolutely! I recently acquired mine, there is total magic in these. I, and many others feel these were the pinnacle of Marshall. After the Master Model, they only went downhill. 800s are awesome, but different.
Very nice! 👍🏻
Thank you Nigel 900
Fantastic looking R9! Please…if you would tell me more about that Blue and White Vox ! Cheers!
Ah yes... Got a great deal on that amp. I believe I bought it on a Black Friday Special through Sweetwater back in 2015. Has an M12 Greenback in it. It loves to have a the Master at around 11 o'clock and the Volume at 2... I usually have to tame it and drop the master to about 9... Maybe I'll do another demo or shootout with the R9 in the Vox. Thanks for watching.
If only I have enough money to own such a beauty ! This is a life instrument. :) So maybe in another life.
I wish great fortune upon you and a smoking deal like I had. I received this new for 30% off and sold 2 guitars that appreciated quite a bit over the last 5 years to make it happen.
Yes nice looking guitar you must be proud of it, has it started to bleed into the binding yet, my 60th anniversary 59 and 2020 R9 both have pink binding bleed, personally i don't like it some people not bothered by it, how ever interested to know if it has been sorted. Still enjoy your prized guitar.
I made a followup video after owning it for about 8 months. Still have and still love the guitar. I don't like the pink binding bleed personally but I also don't have it all over the guitar. It is just on the neck. Here is a link to my follow up. czcams.com/video/p6X1kH996GI/video.html
Dude opens a case to an R9 and his first reaction is "hey, look, a towel".
Well it was a surprise to see a towel… lol
Great video! This is one of my top 3; the others being a Les Paul Supreme Heritage Cherry(were going to pretend the anniversary edition doesn't exist), and the Black beauty. Trying to decide between them for my Bday gift to myself next month. I have a Standard lemonburst, which I love, and a Traditional(I'll be selling that one though). Any thoughts?
I have played 2 supreme's in my life. They have a carved back to them which was really cool to look at but hard to get use to. They also had the 490R & 498T pickups in it which are a little muddy to my ears. Aesthetics wise, they are incredible and definitely inspiring to look at and pick up to play.
I have never played a Black Beauty but they look incredible. My ES355 is Black Beauty like in aesthetics but the supreme would be more my taste.
The R9 looks the most like your other guitars but believe me, it is very different. If it were me, I'd either get the Black Beauty with a good weight (under 9 pounds) or an R9 with a beautiful top.
Nice guitar 🎸
Indeed it is!
Great video thank you so much, 👍👍is the finish polyurethane or nitrocellulose? Also, is the neck deep D or shallow D
It is nitro and I’d say a deeper D but not as deep as an R8
i setup my 2018 gibson les paul standard the sqme
I set up my R9 just like my classic. Feels and sounds great.
You might ruin the ABR1 bridge over time with the stop tail that low. It can sag around the D and G saddles. Top rapping your strings will help. Awesome Channel, subscribed🤘
Very true. I’ve read about the sag issue. I actually ended up raising the tail piece just to see if there was a sustain difference. For me there was not a noticeable one. Then I decided to time it with and without gain. With or without, there was no substantial difference in time. Maybe that’s a video to try in the future.
I understand if you can afford an R9 then get one they are great but I just purchased a 60s standard in ice tea for half the price of yours and it’s just as good….Gibson really has gone back to re set and start again THANK GOD.
Absolutely! Congrats on your new guitar and cheers to our new guitars! I had a hard time choosing between the R9 and a 50's Standard because the 50's Standard neck felt so good and the tone was great. Ultimately I chose the R9 because I was able to get it new for a pretty decent discount before the Gibson price hike and because it had a few features I wouldn't otherwise get on the 50's Standard. My first Les Paul is 2003 with a 60's neck. I still gravitate toward it for songs with faster fret work... cause I need all the help I can get ;)
Not just as good. The standard version is a great guitar but it's way different from the custom shop.
great sound!
HistoricCollection?
Every tag I can find on it just says Custom Shop 1959 VOS
Did your binding bleed? Is the neck binding pink?
Yes there is a little bleed in the first few frets. That is the nature of the dyes that were used at the time.
It would have been nice to hear chords and notes along the entire neck. Playing 3 chords at the nut doesn’t give much to go on. Nice guitar though.
Check out the follow up I did 8 months later after I had some time to get use to it and learn how to do videos better. This was my third video I ever did.
That's my birthday 🎂
AWESOME!!! You and @GEW (down below) have the same birthday
Sounds almost as good as the epi. jk. it’s a keeper
Almost… maybe one day Gibson will catch up. Lol
Haha! Good one, there goes your invitation to Cesar Gueikian's Christmas party.
Very nice! What was the weight on this one? May I ask which retailer you purchased from? Looks like they're getting some nice LP's!
This one is 8 lbs 7 oz. I purchased through Marks Guitar Loft and that dude is an excellent retailer with the BEST deals! marksguitarloft.com
Does the aged hardware bother you?
I like relic’d guitars so it does not bother me much. That said, the aged hardware is minimal and originally I didn’t like the idea of it. After purchasing the guitar I have not thought of it since.
What are those flashing red digits in the back ?
It is a Decibel Meter. I would often find myself wondering how loud someone was in the room to get that tone... so I put one up. Over the last year I have had people complain and commend having it available.
@@tweedcouch Does a db meter have to be read at a fixed distance eg at 1 metre ? Does it have a mic on the front
@@ianevans67 This is has the mic on the DB meter. So what is heard is based off what is caught in the closed room. Some is reflection and some is the what is coming from the amp. The room is only 10x12' so 90-104 db slaps back fast.
Shouldn't it have nylon saddles?? Or that's probably just the Historics.
I believe the nylon saddles started on Les Pauls in 1961 when they started looking like SG's. I do know the real `59's I've seen have not had nylon but then again Gibson did a lot of random stuff back in the day. The nut however is nylon.
Just curious... Why are folks hesitant to reveal the serial numbers on their guitars?
When revealing an actual serial number you open up the door to counterfeiting. I once showed a serial number of a pedal and someone contacted me stating that it was their stolen pedal with “documentation”… but I bought the pedal new from the company... so that has deterred me from ever showing again.
Where's the COA booklet?
@5:57 I pull out the booklet.
Lucky guy.. still my dream
It was my dream for about 6 years and after saving and selling it came possible. Good things can come to those who wait. Good luck in the journey!
No COA from the Custom Shop?
COA was shown starting at 5:57
@@tweedcouch sorry missed that somehow! Nice guitar
@@davew8542 Happens to me ALL THE TIME! And yes, it is a really nice guitar. Thanks.
does it come with real original 59 pickups?
Unfortunately they stopped making those over 60 years ago. These come with Custombuckers.
@@tweedcouch they stopped making because it was inconsistent. they didn't have wound counter back then. 59 lp was hit or miss. then 57 classic came out then later the BB.
@@sean2wall which do you like better? Classic or BB. I have Classics in 2 guitars and BB 2&3 in another. I know there is a lot of variables but the BB 2&3 just barely top the classics for my usage. The classics are also real nice.
@@tweedcouch i think the 57 classics supposed to be a consistent version of PAF with same specs and it was released before BB so i would go with the 57 classics. i do own a 2013 lp trad no weight relief which i think is the best "production" lp.
@@sean2wall I remember the 2013 Gibson lineup being really nice. Most of the guitars had good sustain, feel, and balance. I have a 2013 SG and it was my main guitar for a few years.
I dunno, when you play the right one your face will show it. Your face kinda said everything I need to know about how you really feel. Did you end up trading it?
I don’t really have a lot of “guitar face” when I play. I still have it now. We will see if it ever becomes something I sell or trade off.
I wish Gibson offered not aged versions of their reissues …
I agree. I suppose they believe their "Original Collection" is that... but it's not. Their Original Collection is great but not what they are making in the Custom Shop.
@@tweedcouch I like what Sweetwater is doing with their exclusive model adding 57 pickups and AAA wood to the Standard 50s kind of bridges the gap with the Reissue models. I am tempted to get one of these but have not found a review of it yet.
@@STF_YVR Sweetwater has done a great job with their exclusives for a long time. I'm with you, I'd love to play it and know. When looking at the specs it appears the main difference between the normal standard and the exclusive is the 57 classics and nicer top on the exclusive. At a $200 premium for the exclusive that would be about right. Weight, construction, bridge, finish, and Plek... appear to be in the same range on both guitars.
Some are good and other's are not. Just like the originals. I owned two 1960 Sunbursts: one was great and the other was sold within a year. Same with the Historics and same with Fender Strats. I owned a 57' Mary Kay that was horrible. Sold it. I still own a 54 and 58 strat. 48 years of ownership. The 54 is iffy, the 58 sings! Last, I got lucky with a 59 thin skinned reissue that is fabulous. I also bot a Wildwood 10 slaboard in white that sucks. You just got to get lucky! Just stay away from the 70's crap! Last, I worked for Gatton when I was in College in the 70's. Good Hunting!
I love your tastes man! Could not agree more on your assessment that some are good and some are less than... I have played very few 70's guitars I liked. Most far heavier than I was comfortable with and many felt odd in my hands for whatever reason. I can also say, for whatever reason, some guitars just don't meld with the individual and a player can't bond. I'd love to see a pic or video of that 58 someday if you ever get a chance to send it my way. tweedcouchguitar at gmail
Turn it to 10… 😂
🔟🔊
Keep it! These things have horrible resale value and are very difficult to sell
Absolutely correct! I got mine for about a 30% reduction so if I change my mind and sell then I won’t be completely S.O.L.
@@tweedcouch oh very nice! yeah i've seen people pay full price for this guitar before, which is crazy!
I could barely justify and afford this one! Most everything I purchase is heavily discounted or the right deal... it is too easy to get carried away. Which I believe I may have done here.
@@tweedcouch Yeah I love the r9, but it does feel excessively expensive haha
What's with the changing numbers in the background? Kind of distracting.
It is a decibel meter. I would often wonder how loud an amp was in the room on a CZcams video in order to get the tones they got. For the people that showed a db meter it was usually 94-102db. For some videos I didn't need a db meter to show me because the camera would shake as they played. I decided to put it in the background for the people who wonder.
Nice Video my Gay Friend :)
Happy as can be! Thanks!
That top is not carved properly. the pots are not in the correct place.
The top is missing some of that “dish” people talk about but I’ve also been told that the tops were hand carved and varied. I’ve never heard anything about the pot placement. What is different?
@@tweedcouch in the middle of the tailpiece, if you pass a straight line. It should be just between the two volume knobs. Even the early 80's les paul made in japan got the dish right.
@@seerattan Thanks for that great piece of accuracy. Another thing worth mentioning is the ABR-1 is more tilted on an R9. I believe it is for trying to make the intonation better.
Can't believe the nonsense I've heard. Please do a decent review. Anyway. Congratulations on your R9.
Beautiful guitar that deserves an honor and no nonsense bullshit.
Be sure to check out the BS in my follow up video.
