Shawn Tubbs has since stopped road-tripping in favor of the studio, where he’s a first-call player and his credits include recent work with David Crosby. It's a Stinger Series I bet. They came from Gibson with that black stinger on the back. Same exact serial # font & color.
@@J.C... there was a run of historics that had the stinger. Look for tight straight “tiger stripe” flame and Braz board. Limited number run. I was at auction, R8 historic w/ “transition neck profile”(?) went for $12k.
Why do they call it an R9? I've heard the term on Normans Rare Guitars also.
I know it's a old question, but here we go: R9's are the reissues by Gibson Custom Shop of the famous 1959 Les Paul Standard, considered the best ever made.
It's okay to do makeovers I bought a $1,300 PRS and took a belt sander to the neck I don't care about value I care about playability, &" is this comfortable enough to Gig live with". That's all that matters to me Financial value is nothing in my mind
I love it man if the neck doesn’t feel right it’s useless to me, I could see myself shaving and sanding on some old vintage neck and collectors having a stroke, but I usually know within the first couple seconds of picking a guitar up if I’ll like it or not just by picking it up by the neck. I bought an old squier off a neighbor for 100 bucks and it’s not the same as a Gibson or PRS but took a sander to the neck and it felt amazing when I got done with it lol.
I did the same to my R8. Took it to Josh at Protocaster Guitars in NYC and he reshaped the neck, recarved the top and shot it in old school nitro. It's about playability not collectability. I love it.
I always admired Eddie Van Halen's pursuit of tone and feel He pulled a the PAF pickup out of his '59 LP Standard and put it in his Strat...Eddie siad, "See, actually I ruined a lot of old guitars. I just didn't like the fact of having the standard rock-star setup - you know, a brand-new Les Paul and a Marshall. I was really into vibrato. Like when we used to play the high school dances and shit, I bought myself a '58 Strat. But it's only guitar and bass and drums musically, and the rest of the guys just looked at me and said, "Hey, that thing sounds like hell!" [Laughs.] You know, single-coil pickups, they sound real buzzy, thin. It wasn't enough sound to fill it up. So the reason I started dickin' around that way is I wanted a Gibson-type of sound, but with a Strat vibrato. So I stuck a humbucking pickup in a Strat..."

@@BeantownToBigD Eddie was wrecking old Gibsons before they were so valuable wonder how many true PAFs he actually destroyed lol , he wouldn’t have cared even if they had been valuable he was going to tinker and all guitar players are tinkerers at heart I think always searching for a tone in our head that is just out of reach, I always wanted to be one of those guys who could plug straight into a single channel amp with no pedals and do everything I want with the volume knob, I’ve come to the realization that I will never be that player because of the tones I like makes it impossible I want a really percussive high gain tone and a fat loud spanking clean tone , I could probably do it with a two amp set up modded Marshall and a twin reverb or a Jazz Chorus, I came up on thrash metal and I guess that’s why I think clean means clean. Maybe I’ll grow up one of these days and be able to appreciate a single p90 into a plexi ish thing and a good volume pot .
Sounds like a Historic Makeover. Could possibly be a braz board as well.

Thanks for the kind words! I thought it was a bit odd to put a stinger on the guitar as well but I'm hoping to get the whole story on that guitar soon.
I do not care what "Brand" that LP is it is gorgeous! As long as no one is trying to pass it off as a genuine 59
then i see nothing bad about that guitar. I would love to have a replica that nice sounding and looking.
Unfortunately Riggs, Yaron,Max, Bartlettt,etc are no longer made. but these guys made replica's a art!
So sad that Gibson does not make the 58-60's LP's as good and then cry's when someone goes with a private builder.
