Fun fact! There were songs made for all of the scenes where those licensed songs were. They were all cut, and the original songs are, surprise surprise, much better suited for those scenes.
I heard that too., The Gorilla Kingdom scene had a song about bananas, instead of Take On Me, where nobody is taking on anybody.
Watching the not "Take on me" version of the Kong Kingdom entrance was so much better, like wildly better.

When the movie was announced, around the mid-2010's, i imagined it would be nice if they played "New York New York" by Frank Sinatra
These choices Dick Richards made were exactly how the movie was made and yet it is now just like the Sonic Movies: a national phenomenon.

That is such a false equivalence to me. The Mario movie feels soulless and without passion, just obsessing over cramming in fan-service and references and being as accurate as possible. Meanwhile, the Sonic movies - while having very basic typical plots - are done with a lot of love and passion in my opinion. They are less concerned with being accurate and more about telling a compelling story, while also showing they are big fans of the franchise they are adapting.
Heck, just all the aspects with Doctor Robotnik alone are amazing. They made him a genuinly intimidating super-genius who's also really over-the-top evil. And while Jim Carrey's doing his typical stuff he did in the 90s, he also acts like he genuinly thought through everything about how he wanted his Robotnik to be, and clearly didn't just wanna half-ass the role. Also, his interactions with his henchman Doctor Stone are amazing - a completely original character to the movies.
There's also the fact that while they cast an A-list star for Mario who sounds NOTHING like Mario in the Super Mario Bros movie, the Sonic movies cast a lesser known actor who actually SOUNDS like Sonic to play Sonic. Just sayin'.
Disney: "Hey, you're not supposed to go all out! You got to start small and then work up to it!"

I liked the Teen Titans Go! directors, they got some potential. However I wouldn't mind a new writer to replace Matt Fogel. Maybe a certain directing duo who created... The LEGO Movie.

The guy who plays Dick has been doing these for quite a few years, and he is not only a decent actor and extremely believable in his acting, but he's absolutely GORGEOUS!

You know I watched George of The Jungle the other day thinking damn I remember being great and it'll always be great in my eyes but by God did it speed along 10x as fast as I remember. Scenes flew by and I couldn't understand why but maybe my perception of "pacing" in movies has changed, maybe movies are slower as kids. Even Wall-e is now a good speed though I remember it being beautifully slow.
The Lion King is only 88 minutes long. I remembered it being at least 100 min as a kid.
Everything's perceived slower as a kid, your brain signals are just slowing down as you age, making time seem to go by faster..

What really split the fans and the critics in my opinion isn't even the fact that the movie is ''mid-AF'' but the fact that the movie is full of references and easter eggs that the fans will obviously appreciate but that the critics and anyone not familiar with Mario will just be confused by.
There's also the fact that the premise of the first Mario Bros. game is basic but serves its purpose, so fans like me weren't expecting a super crazy plot, just a fun romp that portrayed the characters well, and that's what we got. A fun time for the fans, not for the critics.
I don't know where that rumour about the fact that "people who didn't like it weren't fans of Mario games" comes from, but I did play a lot of Mario games and had a few of the Nintendo consoles... And I have enough self-respect to be expecting that a movie has an actual movie's qualities.
There are fans who do care about a good story rather than a cash grab fanservice compilation :v
Sure the animation was cool, but for someone who's a little bit picky about and interested in storytelling and the psychology of characters, that's a really disappointed movie.

well i really liked the movie and its fast pacing- this way it kept me interested all the time, actually it's my fav thing abt the movie, it really kept the action full time, i loved how there were so many different, moving angles to each scene they showed. it was really magnificent. though it's true the visuals were really stunning, i dont know which aspect i like more.
The money came in so fast they couldn’t even write the script first.
The film’s biggest problem is that *it was too fast paced.* The film needed 10 to 15 minutes.

The only licensed song I actually liked was Thunderstruck, and that's only because EVERY movie needs AC/DC
This is where Dick Richards having a major role in every studio simultaneously pays off. He had everyone at Disney really phone it in that year so people would convince themselves they liked it more than they did and ordered Dreamworks to make something really good to incept the idea of Disney being dethroned into everyone's heads.

Too be fair, you gotta start small and work your way up, especially with a pretty tenuous idea like a mario movie.
For Zelda though, since those games are much more story heavy, you're gonna need to raise the bar by quite a bit to match quality.
The problem is, people just want a movie that is not SHIT...

Mario Bros is deffo a movie I can describe as good on first watch but then my nagging brain sees all the flaws on rewatch.
For me, its the 7th best video game based movie and the 3rd best illumination movie

More accurately, by comparison to its modern era peers, a "just okay" movie is a 10/10.
By making it just mediocre they are actually making it outstandingly great, relatively speaking.

The little shots at the start about the pacing and music choice were completely how I felt. Along with the missing main plot. I still enjoyed the movie, but have my criticism

your not wrong. i saw the movie 5 times with different groups when the first time i watched it i was like ok some of this is not so great and i would make some changes but by the 5th time i was like best movie ever. still think they never should have gone to NY at the end of the movie.

I am confused. When I saw, I thought it was amazing. It was not until a lot of outside influence like this that I decided maybe I was wrong. It is a kids movie, and at that it excelled.
If you liked it thats fine you shouldn't let other people influence you. But kids movies shouldn't need an asterisk when works like Kung Fu Panda, How To Train Your Dragon, even the first Despicable Me exist. They're for a younger audience but have a strong emotional core and takes time building their world.

wow , i totally agree with this video, everything about Mario movie was pretty random, i mean i still don't get it how he traveled from his world to another dimension, i mean he didn't even spent that much in his own world , and after a few minutes he was in a new dimension , and Bowser randomly loved Peach and randomly wanted to marry her ??? Maybe the movie is mid... but that's ok! It was a fun watch. I will say that I think it's unfair that it made more money than Puss in Boots The Last Wish, which was a better movie. I know the reason why the Super Mario Bros Movie made so much more has to be because Mario is a more popular character than Puss in Boots.

My friends and I show the Mario movie, we were so disappointed we rewatched the two Sonic movies right after to clean our souls.
