Scams need to be talked about more in the translation world. I haven't been badly burned but plenty of people have, and most newcomers are completely unaware of how scammers operate in our profession.
Some unis are now adding a business module to the translation courses they offer, but, at least in my experience, they don't touch on scams.
I'm in half a mind to put together a talk/webinar myself for the ITI.

I totally agree. If you're new to the profession, you may not be aware of how companies usually operate, so red flags can go unnoticed. Yes, please do an ITI webinar!

    Scammers suck.
I had to chase one of my non-payers for months until I hired a debt collection agency.
Best part is I ended being paid to refer clients to this collection agency, so I won 🤣

Hi Mark! I have a question. As a student of English translation and interpreting, I want to create a portfolio but I have no experiences. What and how should I do?

Start by showcasing anything you've done during your studies and perhaps translate some newspaper articles or academic papers. See if there's anywhere you can get volunteer experience with, e.g. charities!
