The kid tried to kill his dad, because his dad doesn't like that he's gay. The dad struggled to not get shot, and wound up shooting the kid. They lied and said it was a drive-by. The kids boyfriend showed up and stabbed the dad. They found gunshot residue on the dad and the kids head, meaning the kid was shot from close range, likely by his dad. They concluded that the dad and the kid were trying to cover up the altercation, to avoid the son going to jail for attempted murder. They sent the boyfriend to jail, for stabbing the father.

It is a show, but it is kinda depicted like this from real situations. Its kinda stupid because instead of killing his father, he could've moved in with his boyfriend. The father clearly still loves him because he brought him to the hospital after his own son tried to kill him.
