- On Day 13 of traveling Tonga we left Vava'u and flew to Tongatapu. After spending the afternoon exploring Nuku'alofa we went to Oholei beach for a traditional Tongan dinner and show. It was fantastic! Definitely a must-do if you are in Tonga! I also ended up getting my hands on a pretty amazing piece of whale bone, that I may have had to leave in Tonga due to not having the correct paper work to bring it back to New Zealand =( But I left it in good hands and I will get it one day =)

OMG your drone shots are amazing!
Thank you =)
Love watching your video👍👍👍👍👍👍 cheers!!!!
Thanks Cindy!!
Wow, Tonga looks like a tropical paradise! I love how casually you say "swimming with whales" xD how cool that you got a vertebra! I'm glad whales aren't killed for it, and that it's collected from dead whales. What a unique souvenir :) the fire show at the end was really cool! thanks so much for sharing!
+TheTravelBugBite it was incredible! And swimming with the whales is the coolest thing I've ever done! Thanks for watching! Subscribe for more tonga videos coming soon =)
So cool to see travellers enjoy Tonga. Mean Videos toko!
Thank you!! I loved traveling Tonga! And I will be back 😁
Watching these videos of you traveling to tonga makes me miss home so much! So glad I'll be going back next year! Love your videos!
+Amelia Fosita glad that you are enjoying them!! Your country is amazing =)
That was awesome ... love the drone footage near the end!
Thanks bro!
You have the most awesome drone shots! I loved watching the waves breaking over that beach there. Awesome firetwirling too - I used to do poi, I gave staff a go but it takes real strength in the wrists and I just couldn't, so full respect to people who can do it professionally! About the whale vertebrae...hmmm, not sure about that story. :) That reminds me, I have to get around to watching your whale video! I still haven't seen it yet!
+The Lost Lemurian thank you! haha yeah the story was very sketchy but the bone is really really cool. Go and watch it now! If you watch my Tonga highlights video they are in there but I have two vlogs that are entire days of whales =)
Lol @ the sales story you got, glad you got a good deal in the end :-)
+JJay479 hahah glad you liked it!!
that was a cool vertebrae... pretty neat souvenir.
+Designing Life Cheers man! Just need to figure out how to get it home haha
That drone footage is INSANE! Gosh, I've been really debating buying one, I may have to cave! And that is... a very interesting souvenir. Good luck trying to get it home though!
+The Nerdventurists thank you! Hahah yes I will need that good luck so keep sending it my way =)
Nice opening drone shot and later on the beach, I really enjoyed whole evening fire show, artists really put a great show, nice vlog.
+Shadez of Megz thank you! It was a great show =)
I think the coloring looked great!
Thanks mate!!
Fascinating story! Now you know why the ride was "free." Should be interesting getting that home because I'm quite sure that's not a checkbox on the customs form.
+mirambling hahah I suppose! Yes we had to leave it behind but I plan on going back for it one day =)
Tonga is a paradise! The fireshow in the end, I thought this guy catch fire or something... crazy! Unique souvenir you get there, haha!
+Rob's Quest thanks mate! Yeah the most unique souvenir I've ever collected haha =)
holy shit! that bone your purchased looked cool! I have never seen anything like it before! Hopefully you will be able to get it home soon! I also really enjoyed the bit with the fire dancers! Looked like a fun show! :)
Wow! Love the awesome fire staff juggling at the end of the video. That's a pretty cool whale vertebra, do you guys think it will be easy to bring back home?
+Journal of Nomads thanks man!! Haha its still with our friends in Tonga. I have a lot of paper work to fill out if I ever want to get it back. But it has a nice home in Tonga =)
Hey team! Hope you guys enjoy the video. Thank you for the constant support and feedback =D You guys are awesome!! Tried out some new colour grading in this one so let me know what you think!
Always crazy to see how different places are and how people live compared to us!
Right!? Thats why I love traveling so much, it just shows you how diverse our world is
It's been awesome seeing the progression of your channel! We've been here since about 200 subs and the quality of the videos gets better and better with each upload! The grading is good man! The story time was great in this one :D What a crazy and awesome souvenir! Is it heavy??
+Travel in Twos Thanks guys! I really appreciate all the support. Haha unfortunately I had to leave it behind for now until I figure out how to bring it back to New Zealand! It was kinda heavy!
Nooooooo! Haha, bet you are glad you didn't pay full price for it then
nice video of Tonga ...
Thank you =)
I love your opening animation - goals :) - fun fact - In my country there is a tribe and it's called Tonga, small world - I was so convinced we have the same origins but alas, what a beautiful place :)
+MissKundwe thank you!! Oh interesting! Where are you from?
I'm from Zambia Ryan :) southern Africa
Hey bro ! Are u sure the tribe in ur country called Tonga or Tongo ? I just wondering....Cheers bro
I just found your channel today, and I'm so glad that I did! I'm from Tonga and it's so awesome watching peoples' experiences while visiting there. Hope you guys enjoyed your trip! :)
The Oholei Resort is so cool too! My aunty's family owns it 😄
+Sala Walter Oh that's so sweet! Really cool place =)
+Sala Walter thank you!! We had such a good time in Tonga. Already wanting to go back!!
So cool hope yous got to go to Anahulu Cave!
Stay tuned for the next episode!!! =)
Oh shiiiiiet now that is some spectauclar drone footage! What are you flying? I'm still getting the hang of my DJI Phantom 3 settings, but I've got my eye on a Mavic as soon as I get back to LA! That whale bone though! That is insane!
+TelevisionOfNomads thanks mate! It's the Phantom 4. Mavic would be sick!! My next drone will probably be the Phantom 4 Pro though haha =p
Wow, Ryan - 7:04 & 7:48 - some of the absolute best drone shots I've ever seen. Those colours are crazy.
You're not the only ones that would have really wanted that vertebra. But I'm with you, would have been slightly nicer without the carvings.
Have you managed to get it back into NZ yet?
+Mel and Jona Travel thanks friends! I haven't got it back yet =( but it's at a good guest hiuse in Tonga where I know it's safe till I figure out how to get it back. It's much harder than I thought it would be!
A pig over bonfire sounds so delicious!
+Elizabeth Travels it was epic!! Definitely try it some time if you have the chance =)
+The Path Less Traveled [Ryan Wilkes] im tongan born in australia, this makes me wanna go back and visit, amazing videos bro keep em coming
great vlog again. night shots are a bit difficult to see
Thanks Jan! I know =( We were in a cave! There were hardly any lights. All the shots are actually from my girlfriends camera because all of my GoPro footage was totally useless. Thanks for the feedback =)
Honestly surprised you dont have more subs yet. Each video gets better and better. Keep it up. (Colour grading looks great too)
Thanks bro, that means a lot! Just gotta stay on the grind and they will come one day =) Thanks for the support!
Interesting story. I hope the bone is actually real and you can get it back home with you. I'm not familiar with that part of the world at all so it's interesting to see what it's like there.
Lotta/Lanttimatkat
+Lanttimatkat the bone was definitely real! Unfortunately I had to leave it in Tonga but I'm still trying to figure out how to get it to Canada or New Zealand =) thanks for watching!!
Hi Man!
Amazing videos in Tonga! Awesome trip.. congratulations and thanks for sharing the experience!
What do you think is the best / cheap way to travel to Vava'u island from Tongatapu?
Cheers!
+Eduardo Oréfice thanks man! Because we were short on time, we decided to fly with Real Tonga Airlines. The other option is a ferry that takes about 20 hours I think but it's much cheaper. I think the flights were about 220 per person and the ferry is about 80. But double check to make sure!
Great Ryan!!
Yep... I'm thinking in take the ferry... Thanks for your help!
Cheers!
Any time mate!
I like it, did you use a lut or just color graded yourself?
Also, that lunch looked amazing! Yuuum, I just love food :D
Volume of music and vocal not equal...
Great video. You could easily be mistaken for a Tongan
+Khaleesi00 haha no one asked me if I was Tongan while I was there. But I know what you mean! =)
lol for some reasons I was thinking Tonga would be in the middle of Africa. Oceania islands that is not Fiji is not usually visited, so thanks for giving us some of the views. I would probably delete the audio when you taking shots on the plane..
Maiku Wong there is a place in Africa called Tonga
Togo is in Africa...many folk's still get confused, even the postal service, as many mailed items end up in the wrong Country-(when mailing to Tonga we always add "Kingdom of Tonga" so that it's less mistakable).
What camera are you using for vlogging and which drone are you using? loving the videos btw. my partner and I are binge watching them atm.
+Anthony Kaihea thanks man! That is so cool that you guys are watching them =) I use a Gopro hero 4 silver and my drone is the DJI Phantom 4
Wow, interesting story.. I'm such a skeptic.. I think the guy was b.s.ing you about the bone.. I'd verify that it's actually real.. okay I HOPE i'm wrong, just again me being such a skeptic and the guy approaching you about it and claiming it was worth like $700. Epic drone shots as usual and I enjoyed the funky party.
+Here Be Barr hahah dude I know. I don't know where I would go to make sure it's real. Maybe a museum or something? Or a biology department? But yeah, it was a heat of the moment decision. It was also interesting because tonga is not a place where there are beggars or hecklers like I'm other third world countries. This was the first time in two weeks that anyone tried to sell us anything like that. Still need to look into how much it will cost to get it back to New Zealand. It might not he worth the trouble because Humpbacks are a protected species so you have to have documents that say it died of natural causes and that it wasn't killed via Whaling.
Damn... yeah .. well I hope you can get it back since you spent good money on "it". Whatever "it" is hahaha.
Checking to see if you ran into any difficulties transporting the bone? Typically those would be confiscated at the airport, especially in NZ, so I'm curious as to if you were able to make it home in one piece.
By the way, this is a great video series and allowed me to take a trip down memory lane as I followed along...I've been back in the States for a bout a year now, however prior to that I was living in Vava'u for over 2.5 year's and then on Tongatapu for another year-and-a-half. Thanks for the memories :)
jb
Did you guys eat dog, bat, turtle or horse on your trip? I can't wait to go to Tonga. Thanks for sharing
+FILIKU haha not that I know of mate! Mostly stuck to fish, pork and chicken =) ota ika was my favorite Tongan dish!
Did you find out if it was real? I swear I wouldn't believe that because how could the price go from 1400 to 100?
Haha I still dont know if it was real! I know right? Its pretty weird. But maybe he was just lying to me about the original price? Guess ill never really know !
