The draft rule was changed after Larry Bird was drafted and stayed for his senior year at Indiana and they named that rule after Larry.

At the time, when the class that a player came into college with graduated, the player became eligible for the draft. Bird started at Indiana University when he was 17 in 1974. Only stayed for 24 days and then hitchhiked back to French Lick. Fast forward to the end of the next summer and Bird "transferred" to Indiana State. He had to "sit out" the first year there because he was a "transfer" but did practice with the team.
So, when Bird finished his junior year there, he was put into the draft, though everyone knew that he would be staying at ISU for his senior year. He'd promised his mother that he would graduate. And what a senior year it was.
The Celtics had a 6th pick and a 9th pick and used that 6th pick to draft Bird. They had one year to sign him, or he would go into the next year's draft after graduation.

I love all those old photos of young Bird. Look at his eyes, you can see a sickness in there, like he just wants to wreck the joint. I get the feeling he didn't like team photos...

I appreciate your interest in the old greats of the NBA. I challenge you to check out the greatest that never was! He was my favorite college basketball player when I was playing high school ball. Len Bias was a phenomenal baller that was drafted #2 overall by the Celtics in 1986. He died 2 days after the draft. Best highlight vid I could find is called "How good would have Len Bias been?"
