The second day of South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice at The Hague saw Israel take the stand, defending against accusations that its government is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. South Africa is demanding an emergency suspension of Israel's aerial and ground assault on Gaza in front of the United Nations' highest court. From The Hague, we hear from Diala Shamas, a senior staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, the organization that sued President Biden in November, accusing him of failing to prevent genocide in Gaza. Shamas recaps the two days of hearings and discusses other avenues for holding Israel accountable. "Whether it's at the ICJ or whether it's in federal court in the United States, we're really looking to government to do everything that they can to uphold their duty to prevent an unfolding genocide," says Shamas.

I’ve noticed some people questioning why nothing has been done in the past 75 years. Firstly, those posing this question need some history lesson. Here’s a snippet:

The US has vetoed resolutions on Israel a total of 46 times. Now, go figure why no significant action could be taken in the past 75 years.

Earlier last year it had been unable to pay the salaries of staff for several months. The ANC was close to bankruptcy. (Sounds familiar? ... like the SAA, SABC, Eskom, Transnet etc. etc)
In October 2023, the minister of foreign affairs visits Iran. Soon after this visit ...
1) the government expresses solidarity with the Palestinians in a public display broadcast on TV
2) hosts a Hamas delegation in SA.
3) launch an urgent application to the ICJ, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. Just the preliminary application costs come to R 200 million for preparation and argument (the final trial will cost about R 1,5 billion.)
About 3 weeks ago the liquidation application against the ANC is confidentially settled (R100m) and the ANC published a statement that its financial woes are over and it’s ready to fund and fight the 2024 elections.

It is widely believed in South Africa that the case against Israel is funded by Iran. The ruling ANC was facing financial ruin, having been sued and unable to pay a substantial debt. A delegation went to Iran and quite suddenly the ANC's debts were paid and their financial woes vanished.

I appreciate South Africa for standing up for us and doing what no one else was willing. The Israeli soldier that killed my aunt Huda Hawarjeh in Aida Bethlehem smiled on camera and said he was purifying the land. The CBC covered this interview but I also uploaded here to my channel on youtube for the world to see. I hope that one day all Palestinian refugees can return to our homeland and have peace equality of value and voting.

if the court claims that israel is committing genocide, then if it goes on uninterrupted, governments internationally will be able to more freely sanction israel (since if israel doesn't stop, it will be basically admitting that it does not abide to international law - something, that their prime minister has already confirmed on twitter in one of his posts last week). right now western states do not side with south africa/palestine because of the us. with the verdict of the court, if israel kept breaking the international law (even if everyone already knows that it does so), there would be 'official' reasons to act against it.

2. They hide themselves among Palestinian civilians, schools, and hospitals.
3. Israel retaliates and duh - civilian casualties as collateral.
4. Cry about civilian casualties (ignore the fact that Hamas planned for this).
5. Triple win:
- International communities rush to Palestinian defense and outrage against Israel.
- Palestinian orphans and next of kin are groomed as next-in-line Hamas soldiers of vengeance.
- International support pours in more money and aid into Palestine - which Hamas can then hijack and use to build up their supplies and arsenal in preparation for the next attack cycle.
6. Rinse and repeat = conflict forever until Israel loses its international support and legitimacy.

This is kind of tragic and comical at the same time because Hamas and Palestinians are never allowed to take the stand and testify in the court throughout the trial. Palestinians have been always ignored and sidelined throughout history.
There was a delegation from Palestine with the South African legal team. The South Africans and Palestinians did a press conference together after the first day. The Palestinian reps expressed a lot of gratitude to South Africa and encouraged other countries to follow its brave example.

Your comment is ahistorical. Do more research. At this stage of hearing before the ICJ, there is no provision for the calling of witnesses. Otherwise, nothing would have prevented the South African legal team from putting not just Palestinian but Israeli and expert witnesses on the stand.

Hamas is a terrorist organisation that openly promote the extermination of the jews from this planet. They shouldn't be allowed to take the stand. It's ridiculous that Hamas controlled parts of government is speaking about the number of dead civilians on the palestinian side. 1.They themselves have openly no care for human lives. 2.They are the reason Israel is bombing civilian areas by using these people as "useful idiots" storing and firing rockets from.
The loss of civilian lives would end if Hamas release the hostages and go fight the israeli army in northern Gaza. Basically start behaving like men instead of cowards.
