I wish TxSU would have pulled out that ‘Coming to America’ from back in the day, after SU opened with Rocky(eye of the tiger)…that would have really set this battle to another level! Great to see both bands in top form…Great Battle!
Man I have to give this battle to TXSU, 8-4. The Ocean had three major strengths this battle: song selection, battle strategy and arrangement quality. Even with SU at a slight disadvantage in terms of playing order, when you look back at the battle overall, TXSU's catalog was more diverse and crowd friendly. Look at a round like the first where they pull Brandy out of the gate, or round 3 where they meet a viral tiktok song with one of Usher's biggest hits. TXSU also weaponized that material against SU in a more strategic way, for example, in round 9 when SU pulled out "Back at One" by Brian McKnight. That arrangment by SU is gorgeous and was beautifully executed, but The Ocean didn't even give the audience a chance to fully take it in because on "4" they were already cranking out "We Taking Over." The last major note I want to make is about arrangement quality. Both bands matched intensity throughout the duration of the battle, but there was only one round where SU's selection completely powered over TXSU and that was round 7. But even with the noticeable difference in size between the two bands, TXSU met SU with a comprable level of intensity. In some rounds I would even say they outplayed SU simply because Brian Simmons and Juvon Pollard are arrranging some FREAKY ASS SHIT over there for The Ocean. I think SU is an example that at a certain point, volume maxes out year over year despite the number of people in the program, and everything else will eventually be forced to come down to the writing. With that said, SU's trumpets are beasts. TXSU's euphoniums, mellos and bones are a problem and whoever arranges over there knows it and uses it to their advantage. TXSU's start to the '22-23 season is inspirational and other developing programs should study their past three seaons at least. WOW....... Southern lost again (band/football wise), LMAO........First LSU now to a smaller TXSU.........SU sounds muddy and not polished to me so far. They usually sound good early in the season but not this year. TXSU's song selection this year has been really amazing. They will be one of the kings in the SWAC in about 1-2 more years. LSU and TXSU is good but they’re still not touching southern yet you could with TXSU hear some of the sections falling apart. the song selection might be better but southern will always play it better
Txsu trumpet section could barely do a section battle, they need to work on their chops.. if you seen the section battle you know exactly what I'm talking about...the whole band sat out all 4th quarter which was smart, song selection was better but they ran out of gas! After hearing them in person, I'm starting to question if Southern has gotten too big. The volume & power of their songs are too strong for the acoustics of enclosed stadiums. Smaller bands seem to do much better.
The MJ song after su's ballad was a the perfect response. That arrangement had alot of color and runs (for a brass band instrumentation) but was played at maybe 80bpm. It was good. Best thing they played all night tone wise and accuracy wise. But the song by MJ had as much color in chords and harmonies and soli runs too...at a faster pace with great accuracy and tone quality and intonation. But people are in their feelings and low down because "we haven't seen TxSU be good so the su alumni directing their band are making su at TxSU"...su doesn't and never had a monopoly on black and minority musicians PLAYING. Texas Southern University is a great hbcu just like everyone else. The marching band program, unfortunately, went through leadership changes and stagnation. Brian Simmons was hired. He and staff are doing an amazing job. All the disrespectful comments by su fans have actually been going on for a very long time. Yall are just sensitive AF when anybody elevates their own thing. Half of yall fans still talkin ish about the football game being sour when yall got smashed 24-0. 😐better be glad TSU coaches and PV coaches haven't tapped into actual Texas dominant football because then it would've been worse IYKYK.

Not a big fan of fifth quarters being this long I get it the old school like it but I'm like a old school band head myself at least 25 minutes tops four or five songs per band because the fatigue factor is going to kick in in the quality of the arrangement going to decline drastically but nevertheless Texas Southern showed up showed out I'm going to have to give them to win based on song selection. Both bands was intense and they fairly executed the majority of their pieces but I'm loving the Ocean right now

I hate when 5th quarter battles are this long. Your lips, arms and fingers & other things start to get tired after a while and sometimes it’s noticeable in the performances. But good job to both bands! I like TSU much more this year. SU is Southern and I mean that in a great way. They are so massive nowadays, I think they’ve had better books in the past.

@@J.Nev. I mean the drum section has a different groove but as far as the sound both bands sort of have the same formula, not saying it's bad but there was a time when I could close my eyes and tell exactly what band is playing..
For me SU ≈ 9.75/10 they gotta clean some stuff, their arrangements demand a lot from the individual performers and the ensemble . TxSU ≈ 9.3/10 I heard some fatigue from the trumpets. For me the “wow” parts of the arrangements don’t stick out like they should, better execution would help. “Georgy Porgy” is killing! Epic 5th imo both bands had the ratio that I prefer when it comes to song selections. I’m not the biggest fan of most of the current mainstream hip hop, the simplicity of it (minor keys & similar bpms) doesn’t entertain me. Song selection isn’t that big of a deal for me I’m looking for execution.
It was 94 degrees most of the day. If they don’t move the 4pm game time or the location it might be empty next year. 😂😂 Dallas heat in Sept is different! A good bit of visitor side fans and the Jukebox actually left their seats for shade in the 2nd Q.

I hate when 5th quarter battles are this long. Your lips, arms and fingers & other things start to get tired after a while and sometimes it’s noticeable in the performances. But good job to both bands! I like TSU much more this year. SU is Southern and I mean that in a great way. They are so massive nowadays, I think they’ve had better books in the past.

@@J.Nev. I mean the drum section has a different groove but as far as the sound both bands sort of have the same formula, not saying it's bad but there was a time when I could close my eyes and tell exactly what band is playing..
@@pimptheuniverse I Can Still Tell The Difference. Besides Arrangements And A Cleaned Up Sound I Can Still Differentiate The Two Easily.
For me
SU ≈ 9.75/10 they gotta clean some stuff, their arrangements demand a lot from the individual performers and the ensemble .
TxSU ≈ 9.3/10 I heard some fatigue from the trumpets. For me the “wow” parts of the arrangements don’t stick out like they should, better execution would help. “Georgy Porgy” is killing!
Epic 5th imo both bands had the ratio that I prefer when it comes to song selections. I’m not the biggest fan of most of the current mainstream hip hop, the simplicity of it (minor keys & similar bpms) doesn’t entertain me. Song selection isn’t that big of a deal for me I’m looking for execution.

It was 94 degrees most of the day. If they don’t move the 4pm game time or the location it might be empty next year. 😂😂 Dallas heat in Sept is different! A good bit of visitor side fans and the Jukebox actually left their seats for shade in the 2nd Q.
