    I have the same frustration with when friends and family y say "The guy / girl at the parts store told me code says I need this part." My answer is "The code only tells us where to star looking. Before I just throw parts at it I would like to properly diagnose the problem. It might be the expensive sensor, the part it monitors, or it might be an inexpensive broken wire repair."

    My brother I'm SOOO HAPPY I found your video on here because you have MOST DEFINITELY lifted my spirits. I'm an old school automotive machinist and a decent mechanic so I have rebuilt many engines just not this one. THAT said and watching a few crappy youtube videos prior to this one it's just enough to get a person in a hell of a lot of trouble with this spaghetti mess of chains, multiple tensioners, grenade pins, cam phasers, magnetic cam sensor rings that attract EVERYTHING your valvetrain chews up, a gaggle of timing marks, each side needs to be lined up separately.... For the love of God why??? I'm just thankful this engine is in a 2014 Jeep Grand Check Engine Light ... Umm I mean Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L Flex Fuel bla bla bla... or it would have been a real treat if it were in sideways...
    So this debacle originally started when I was getting cam crank correlation code, misfire codes, ECU code, just over and over then they go away. The light usually came on during decel but later on it was totally random. Eventually this ticking noise developed that would go away and sometimes there was a loud clattering sound coming from the engine at startup that was alarming. This steadily got worse. Oil pressure normally I think was 25 at idle warm but now is low like 10 psi in neutral but goes right up when I touch the gas. I'm thinking old school here, noisy lifters bleeding off oil pressure, possibly tensioner going bad also bleeding off oil etc. The vehicle has 137K on it at the present moment so I figure it has to be this side. I'm doing pretty good so I have my false confidence going on. Nothing looks bad on the passengers side except the cam journals ( cam and head all 16 of them ) are scratchy like they were starved of oil a bit. I polish everything up with 500 grit just to remove the high spots to give it a chance. Cams are all good amazingly, I clean the silver magnetic fur off the reluctor disks on the back of the cams and button it up.
    At this point I'm feeling pretty cocky, I pull the drivers side valve cover and that's where the chaos began. I'm doing one cam at a time and again another 16 journals need polishing but the cams are good. Here is where it went sideways in my mind anyway. I DID NOT KNOW that if some butter fingered bumbling fool who was scared to pull his homemade grenade pin because he almost lost his mind getting the tensioner retracted and locked in place. FYI a mountain bike spoke ( grenade pin modded to fit ) and a piece of stainless spring or silver solder ( very stiff and not easily bent back ) will work. You can lock the cams together at the spot you're using the wrench just use 2 wrenches, cross them and clamp them together. I had all the technical stuff going pretty smooth until it gets down around 37 degrees and I can't feel my hands. I'm wrestling the intake cam phaser into place and it slipped out of my hand, the chain slacked and went down in the cover. I almost crapped myself... I can't see down in there so all I can think is did it jump a tooth down on the crank? I did not paint the chains because they have colored links and the timing marks are everywhere. That is not what bothered me, I can't see through the timing cover so I don't know if it jumped a tooth. I didn't pull the pin yet and didn't turn anything over so I think just start from the start, line it all back up but I can't see the lower gear!!! Did it jump??
    So it's done, it all looks good, I'm scared to pull the pin because if I'm wrong I'll have to put it in again and doing it once in a lifetime like this is enough. I can't push the start button, it's my only vehicle on the road and if I'm wrong. So I start to roll it over and the cams opening the valves so I can't see it the marks are lined up because I have to turn it until they line up. Not realizing if I turn it over without tension on the chain it jumps a tooth. NOOOOO!!!! Ok repeat process and this time it's all lined up and I pull the pin. It's all still lined up but I can't stop thinking about the crank. I turn it over like 5 times by hand with the plugs out and no resistance that I can feel, no bumping valves off pistons just smooth. I think I have it so I push the button and it cranks but won't start. It sounds like it's cranking slow and it was cold out so I put the charger on the battery and it's pulling over 5 amps... I do remember that week it was cranking slow for a few days before this. It's the original MOPAR battery from 2014 so I feel a new battery isn't a bad idea going into winter. So $200 later and the same thing it just cranks but won't start. I also saw a video more recently showing the timing chain replacement and the one old chain was about a 1/4" longer than the new one with MUCH less miles than my Heep. So what can you say about getting 137K on the factory battery and timing components? I have a full timing kit ordered with gaskets and now they are calling for snow, YEAH!!
    I'm thinking I got my money's worth out of these parts and probably should have torn the whole front off the engine right at the get go which would have saved me about 42 panic attacks and many years off my life ;)

      Hey buddy, the good news out of all this is it's a RWD vehicle..which makes all the repairs you may have to do easy. Let me know what all part inside of that timing kit. Something else I would like to add, early on I was told the PCV valve ( oil strainer ) should be changed since at that time it was over 100K. I looked up a MOPAR valve it was about $60, I looked at the Standard ignition valve at $20 and made in USA I went with Standard Ignition. I replaced it earlier this year and not even 6 months later it went bad and 2.5 quarts of oil were sucked through the intake over a period of weeks. This engine NEVER used any oil since I've owned it. It was bought at 28K so I check it once a month or so. There were no lights, warnings or anything except a very bad smell out the exhaust. Thankfully I run a K&N so it just got a good re-oiling ;)

    Thanks for the vid.. Does not appear to be much out there on the Phasers on these. Just put new cams, lifters, and rockers (failed lifters) on 2017, and a few weeks ago it started dumping oil in the PCV and getting a P0017 - bad phasers seem more likely the issue with the timing but gotta pull it all apart again to check. (Live data showed it all off) ( I did replace the PCV valve after it dumped the oil but the timing issue has drawn all of my attention at the moment) and OF COARSE, it is the back of the engine hard to get to!

      Aaron, were you having rough idle issues before changing the phasers? I'm having multiple miss fire / rough idle about 45 seconds after a cold start. IF I rev the engine up it will run but as soon as it idles, it's so rough, sometimes it dies out. Iv'e changed the following. PCV, O2 sensor, coil packs, sparks plugs, MAP sensor, and I checked both camshafts and even replaced rockers / lifters. Driving me nuts but I didn't thinbk about changing out the phasers since there were no codes to lead me that direction. I was getting a Rich idle code of some sort but I haven't seen it in a while.
      JT, if you are reading this, any info would help. If you have time, I would love to explain everything to you from the beginning on signs and different codes I was getting before changing anything. DM if you ever get some free time.

    • @jacobtrahan181
      @jacobtrahan181 Před rokem

      BTW... all the issues from the begining have been coming from Bank 1. The only code I am geting now is P0300. There is also a constant ticking noise but all the rockers are new. I'm going to tear back down this evening to do JT's trick and see if the cams will move freely within phasers when turning with a wrench. This will shed light on phaser issues hopefully.

    Dealership has had more car for 3 months almost, they finally decided it was a camshaft phaser, they replaced it, I picked it up, it started real rough, made it 15 min and the car shut off while driving, got it start back up except now it has the cam shaft position 2 sensor engine code on which was the original reason I brought it in June, this would make the 3rd sensor in the few days I have my Jeep with the 3.6 since June 5th. I’m convinced the mechanics at my dealership are unsure of what to do.

    I have a question for you! So I have been around a motor once or twice military gearhead to be precise.... In fact I do most of my repairs... So I took my dodge journey into the dealership (mistake number 1, the reason I opted not to do it myself is lack of a garage and the fancy tools for this big job) after a self diagnosis of a head gasket leak (exhaust into the cooling system) I told them to confirm as I was about 90% sure and also wanted them to try to diag the tick it had (I could not figure out what it was) so when I dropped off the car there was no check engine light on, only stored DTCs (17 to be precise from temp warning to misfire and even p0016) When they put everything back together billed me almost $1700 in just labor called me told me that the cam phasers need replacing and the check engine light is on reading the p0016 code...based on watching your videos I would assume any rookie tech would check for movement of the cams prior or is this not common practice? I have removed the sensor plugs to see if it got better/worse with no change which is telling me a bad phaser... the real question is why would they put back together the vehicle even if they knew the phasers were bad then quote out another $1100 job? I'm Likely going to do it myself.... also would you be able to tell me the head size of the 2.4 cam phaser bolt?

    • @OnlineMechanicTips
      @OnlineMechanicTips  Před 3 lety +1

      Im not really sure they put it back together knowing a phaser was coming apart. Ide like to think they just simply didnt check it mechanically. Also I would caution doing this job until you feel comfy wit that timing setup. Thats not easy bud, but do-able. Also are you subscribed to the channel?

      @@OnlineMechanicTips I am subscribed for some reason or another it did not tell me you responded, until I clicked on the bell. Sorry for my late response. So I actually pulled the valve cover off and with the car in neutral rotated the crank once checked position of the cam phasers both lines were pointing outward and slightly down. Rotated again both we pointing inward slightly up seems more up then it was down... so something with the timing was not done correct, which is obvious there are missing bolts, the wheel well engine splash guard is missing (they never took those bolts out just broke the plastic. Hell even the hood prop retaining clip is now missing, none of the valve cover bolts were actually tight the 5 miles I put on the car to drive to the tire shop to swap my stud with regular and then home... there was plenty of oil on the outside of the newly cleaned head etc I called doge customer cares if it was just a timing issue I likely would let them fix that but with all the other issues it shows no Quality control exists, and begs the question of what are they going to break next.

I am getting P0018 too, and I replaced camshaft and crankshaft sensors in bank 2. AutoZone said the possible cause is the vct phaser. How likely is this and do these symptoms correlate with the weather and phaser? The check engine light will come on, car drives fine with the exception of reduced gas mileage and the initial brake sputter at the beginning. But the check engine light will go off after a few ignition cycles and return days or weeks later. Car has 214000 miles on it and never been rebuilt.

    Hope you or someone sees this comment of mine.... HELP!!!! Lol, I have an 09 accord 2.4L vtech with 140k on motor 298k on body. I F'd up and was fully aware when I got it in November it needed an actuator. Now I have bigger problems, I think. I know it is needing a timing chain kit, actuator and I do not know if I am overthinking this, but crank is at TDC, come up to cams and timing marks are off by 7-8 teeth. When I initially looked at eye level the intake vtc sprocket looked as if the chain was riding on the points of the teeth while exhaust sprocket was good and set. I went to loosen top chain guide and it popped down into place. I DO NOT KNOW what to really do next. The right thing to do is I am pretty sure just pull the crank pulley, motor mount, timing cover, pop chain off, and then cams. If I can get a motor hoist, is it just easier to pull the motor and rebuild it? I owe on the car still so I am not sure the best financial approach.

      My friend, theres no one size fits all with this stuff. NOBODY would know if the cam phasers or timing chain is your problem or needs to be replaced. This stuff has to be diagnosed. Can a cam phaser cause this? at 100k absolutly, can a timing chain? How? Unless its super stretched (highly unlikely) or a guide has broken causing timing to be off. But if you asking me based off what ive seen in the past and my experience I would def be looking at those phasers.

    I finished the replacement of the right intake cam on my Dodge Grand Caravan. Took it to have a mechanic with a computer set the relearn on the cam/crank. The timing marks are right but the computer says its got a slow cam sensor code and no crank sensor even though its running. He cleared all the codes and the light came back on b4 I got home. I drove it a while (over 100 mi ) and took it back and it now says there is an issue with the timing chain but the crank and cam sensors seem to be working fine now. Think I will keep driving and keep clearing the codes. Maybe it will adjust on its own.. Welcome any comments

      Hey bud. Not sure I meant for that to be seen..lol, let me say this. After youve done a few, it becomes very easy, also keep in mind, with the timing chain cover on the car, the chain will not jump time on the crank. So no matter how you lay the chain, timing will not be affected except for at the camshaft which could easily be put back together correctly.
