This literally is my favorite James Bond ever. Sean Bean played a great villian here.
006/Alec is probably my favorite vilain, he's just the anti-james bond or what if james bond turned evil. He has the same training, same knowledge, gadgets, etc ...
And that plot twist with the statues : "Hello, james" always give me chills. Someting really rare in a james bond film
This was THE Bond Masterpiece if you ever ask me
And I love how they turned the Sean Bean's trope about him always dying in their advantage. So his "resurrection" is even more of a surprise and a plot twist ^^
I think it's too early for that. This was one of the movies that started the trope, but The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones were still to come, so the trope that Sean Bean always dies was not well enough established to subvert yet.
Goldeneye was written as Daltons third Bond film but do to a long court case over the rights to the name James Bond and no one really knowing when or even if the Broccoli family where going to get to continue the series Dalton stepped down from the part to do other projects. Fun Fact is that Pierce Brosnan was hired to play Bond during The Living Daylights but do his contract with reminton steele he had to turn it down and Dalton did it instead. This is also considered the last of the classic Bond series. Albert R. Cubby Broccoli died after this movie and many of the people who had worked on the movies since forever steped down after this movie. Now Albert Broccolis Daughter Barbara and his step son Michael G Wilson are running the show and the series have never really felt the same since

This is my favorite Bond movie!
This is the very first Bond movie I saw in theaters, way back in 1995. I LOVED THIS MOVIE SO MUCH, and I haven’t seen it til today. It holds up well(well most of it). I remember buying the soundtrack at The Wherehouse at the mall. Just like Nick said, I enjoyed this soundtrack, very much. Especially the end credits song. “The Experience of Love” by Eric Serra. It beautifully captures everything you just saw and is it’s own power pop ballad. Best moment for me: seeing the both of you react to Minnie Driver. THAT WAS EVERYTHING.
Also, that was a cute ending(EMP). Great job, both of you!

The Dam scene was filmed in Switzerland, and you can still bungee jump of that Dam and feel like the cleary to be seen stuntman. ;)
This was the first modern Bond film I ever saw, after seeing all the previous ones in order. It must have been a year after it came out. I remember the original teaser trailer came out with Pierce coming out from behind silhouette and saying "You were expecting someone else?" We didn't have internet back then, so I had no idea they'd replaced Bond. I was not a happy guy. Fortunately, I really enjoyed the movie because I was just the right age for it, and Martin Campbell did a great job directing. He does even better in Casino Royale, but he had Ian Fleming's novelization to lean on in that one. This is the first use of CGI in any James Bond movie. Thankfully, it's minimal because it is what it is for the time. But trust me, the CG gets worse and worse as we head towards Die Another Day. It's laughable. I can't say it's not entertainingly bad in that respect. Laugh out loud funny in parts. But Goldeneye is probably almost the perfect pacing for a modern Bond film. It's not Jason Bourne levels, but it's not slow either. In many ways, we see the beginnings of modern action movie pacing here, with only brief moments where Bond is doing something other than action scenes. Get used to that. There's very little of Roger Moore and a girl checking out an exotic locale or Timothy Dalton taking a horse drawn carriage with Kara in Vienna. There's not enough time for that. It's not terrible at times, but I do miss 80s and early 90s movie pacing.
Its strange how perfect Martin Campbell is as a Bond director yet he has not really made anything else thats truly great. Zorro was okey and the green lantern was horrible

16:27 Yeah, bless him Desmond was by this stage. He had difficulty remembering the technical details of the gadgets so they wrote them on cue cards and held them just out of shot for him to read. If you look closely you can see his eyes aren't always looking at Piers and that's why. As for his final appearance - you'll know. It's perfect.

They did a good job answering questions at the time as to whether or not James Bond can still be relevant after the end of the Cold War. And it was 1995, not the early 90s. A 6 year gap since Dalton.
You two alluded to it, I think this is the first Bond film after the official end of The USSR.
Again, CGI refers to Computer Generated Imagery...this film was released in 1995 and CGI wasn't really much of a thing until the turn of the century except in a few movies like T2, The Abyss, Star Trek 2 or The Last Starfighter. The shot of Bronson gliding into the door of the crashing plane was rear projected or a standard visual effect. No Computers were used to create the images you saw there. Now, the opening title sequence did incorporate some CGI. It is a sticking point for me when people confuse traditional visual effects for CGI.
Pierce proved to be the 2nd best Bond with this movie simply for being both human, vulnerable and classy at the same time. He wasnt a brute like Craig. He had style and yet he brought Bond to his knees with emotion. His character lost that in the later movies. But Pierce will always be loved and respected for what he brought to the character in GoldenEye.
And thats one reason why i think Goldeneye is the third best Bond movie after From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. These movies set the standards that we take for granted today.
would be cool if 006/Alec didn't die but came back in the other sequels like specter but his goal to take out mi6 , we could have had a villain every step of the way considering he was an agent who help mi6 , could had a great moment that alec and james who are enemies end up helping to fight something worse while not getting along.
This is my favorite James Bind film, only because this was my very first Bond movie I ever watched. I definitely can’t wait to see your reaction to this movie. Keep up all the good work 😊
GREAT reaction to my favorite Bond film! Such a fun ride with a fantastic cast, all at the top of their games. I also really like the next one, Tomorrow Never Dies. Looking forward to your reaction to that one.
In my top 3, for sure. Great cast, and while it looks VERY 90s, it's a fantastic Bond film.

Its strange the movie special effects almost forecasted the actual destruction of the huge satellite dish in Arecibo, Puerto Rico in 2020. The structure got into disrepair from not enough funding and supporting cables snapped and the central structure fell into the dish... minus Sean Bean being crushed. There are videos of the final destruction on CZcams from cameras setup around the structure.
3rd movie featuring a swedish bond girl Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco), Miss Moneypenny is played by Samantha BOND. They used the Arecibo Telescope at The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico as the Goldeneye Satellite Dish for the movie.
GoldenEye is the first Bond movie I missed to watch in cinema after one week screenings. The other one is No Time To Die.
YAY!!! You knew *I'd* be here for THIS one! I mean, I have been for all of them so far, but you two know how excited I have been for this one!!! Told you the supporting cast was PERFECT in this one. What a massive ensemble, as you all rightly mentioned. Sean Bean was a GREAT villain (with a twist!). Historically- it's a perfect storyline as they were trying to figure out "what do we now that the Soviet Union no longer exists?" Bringing in this new post-soviet digital era, it's a great mediator film for the ending of that age. TONS of other bit parts and cameos too! I also really like Pierce as Bond. Like you pointed out, he's very charming. In like of that Sean C. charm way (without the 60s slapping and edge)... but he blends some of Roger's quippyness meshed with Tim's seriousness. A great first outing for him. The biggest sin of this one is that the BMW Z3 gets no action. Haha Beyond that I love the setting, the music, the twists, and the WHOLE cast. Here's to enjoying the rest of PB's bonds! (Even though some of them reach Roger Moore's levels of zaniness in my opinion) I'll be right there with ya'll too... hmm... looks like in a couple more movies you'll get to my favorite BOND CAR of all time.... wonder if you can guess it before I comment on it! :-D
In the original plot line by Ian Fleming there was only one 00 agent at a time. It’s interesting when they show more than one. As much as I liked Roger Moore and Sean Connery as Bond I still think the most believable James Bond is Daniel Craig. He really looks like a remorseless killer for Queen and Country. I also think having 006 as the villain here is pretty much the most believable villain of the series.
My favorite Bond film overall. Great action scenes and that cast is just stacked. Also, the Nintendo 64 Goldeneye game was addictively fun and was 1 of the best games ever made for that system (yes, you get to rampage through the streets with the Russian tank).
"There was no ridiculousness in it." Weeeell, a British agent destroying half of St. Petersburg in a tank is definitely more than a bit ridiculous, but it's cool enough not to matter to most people 😂
It's a top 10 Bond movie for me for sure, but it's not imo as flawless as some Bond fans make it out to be. Some of the model effects and early CGI doesn't work too well and some of the plot structure leaves something to be desired. And while I think Brosnan's performance here is overall good, he doesn't seem as confident from the get go to me as other Bonds in their debuts.
Fun fact: Whenever Dalton was still tied to this movie in the early stages of pre-production, Anthony Hopkins was looked at to play 006, as an older sort of mentor figure to Bond.

Before Pierce Brosnan was cast as 007, Sam Neill, Mel Gibson, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Paul McGann, and Ralph Fiennes were considered for the role.
John Woo, Roger Spottiswoode, John Landis, Michael Caton Jones and Peter Medak were considered for Directing.
The laste Alan Rickman was considered to play the rogue 00 agent Alec Trevalyan, who Bond must face in order to save the world.
Sir Anthony Hopkins was also considered for the role of Alec Trevalyan, and was more of a father figure to Bond, having helped train him to become 007.
Ace of Base, the swedish band known for “Beautiful life”, created their own theme song for the movie, but it was rejected by their music label. Interestly in 2002 the group rewrote the song under the name of “The Juvenile”

You know the background to Brosnan & Bond ? He was chosen to replace Roger Moore after his performances in Remington Steele on TV and the show was due to be cancelled leaving him free to take the Bond job he craved. A deal was agreed but then the producers picked up the option to do more of Remington and due to his contract Brosnan had to do them. Therefore he lost the Bond gig that Dalton ultimately took. Then the Bond franchise ran into unrelated legal issues which is why Dalton only filmed two of the three he was contracted for. When that was finally resolved and they were free to film again, Dalton declined to come back as he thought he was too old and didn't want to repeat the mistake of keeping the great Roger Moore too long. By this stage in the early nineties, Brosnan was free of his Remington Steele commitment and free to do the job. The planets had finally aligned for him.
Ironically Dalton was chosen to replace Connery too, but he thought he was too young.

Minnie Driver doesn't get enough credit for this one. Lol, in all seriousness Trevelyan's lust for revenge brought a bit of nuance to the story.

Goldeneye was the first Bond movie I ever watched (coincidentally, Goldeneye 64 was the first video game I ever owned too), so Pierce Brosnan and Judi Dench very much became my "default" Bond and M.
And they are my favorites. Brosnan is my favorite Bond, and Dench is my favorite M.
And Goldeneye is one of my favorite entries. Sean Bean/006 is one of the best Bond villains ever.
Did ya catch the subtle underpinnings of the radical change Russia was undergoing at the time? The opening sequence with the women taking hammers to statues representing the USSR, and Zukovsky bitching about a free market economy? Mid 90s was a time of massive flux as the remnants of the Soviet Union and Communism were finally being eradicated and democracy and capitalism were taking root.
