Saddest part when Q slowly went down and that was Desmond Llewelyn's last Bond appearance before he sadly passed away in a car accident weeks after the movie's release.

Barbara Broccoli, the producer (along with Michael G. Wilson), who took over this franchise from her father after Goldeneye described Elektra's character and her relationship to Bond like this:
"In Elektra, Bond thinks he's found Tracy, but really he's found Blofeld."
I honestly think that's pretty brilliant. There are loads of references to OHMSS in this movie, aside from the very obvious one. Such as Elektra's clothes at points very much so resembling outfits Tracy wore in OHMSS.

yes this was desond Llewelyn's last movie as Q as he died 3 weeks before the priemiere of this movie in a car crash from a book signing. Llewelyn had stated not long before his death that he had no plans to retire and that he would continue playing Q "as long as the producers want me and the Almighty doesn't on. on the wiki page about him. RIP Desmond

Crazy that he got to that age only to die in a car crash. Also how they managed to send him off perfectly with his scene, not knowing it would be his last appearance.

The interesting part is that Elektra was created, molded to become a villain. She didnt born one, or just wanted the world domination just for the sake of it! Like Alec, she does have a motive, and like Sanchez, she is a realistic character.
Theres a few hints that Mr King abuse Elektra (not always the abuse comes from sexual or physical), the way he hurt Elektra mother. Its implied that Mr King, didnt love his wife... he just use her to have access to the oil pipes... Later comes the kidnapping, with Mr king betrayal and also M. The way she had to go around, seduce renard and make herself alive. Obvious this is a grundge that goes bigger and bigger, till a point she becomes completly in a dark path or revange. A path that bond knows very well, in fact he kill 2 people in cold blood. Alec and Elliott. Paris death, still haunts him, so thats why he tried to save her, but also he sees himself in her!
Elektra is one of the few villains that are complex and have some depth. She is the first villain to destroy MI:6 headcourts, to put M in a danger situation and keeping bond in a moral dilemma.
Elektra is also the first woman to have 3 traditional roles, main villain, Femme fatale and also bond girl. Plus, She is the first woman, bond really kills in cold blood. In fact, several things of this movie, did inspired others in the future.

the deal with y2k was that space on computers was scarce in the 60s and 70s. so they coded dates with 2 digits for the year. so 2000 would be 00. and we're talking about 30ish year old systems that few people currently working (in 99) would know, mostly in cobol, a programming language few people were taught after the 80s (ex-wife was trained in cobol specifically because of this, weirdly, like if you had to learn Sanskrit to save the world)

On Dec 31, 1999 I was an IT manager who was on call and holding my breath that the programming teams that ran nightly financial systems in my computer center had every program changed and corrected to run properly, so I could enjoy the New Year 2000. It doesn't sound like a big deal now especially in running my financial systems properly, but old computer systems controlled so many processes in industry, manufacturing, emergency systems, the power grid, and military systems that were critical. No one could reliably predict what would happen when those old control programs which relied on precise time and calendar calculations would try to roll forward from "99" to "00". Many custom designed computers that control processes in machines would fail, or crash the processes they controlled. So the programs had to be replaced, or equipment replaced that used new code, or the old code changed to use 4 digit years instead of 2 digits. Most programmers who wrote the original code never considered their programs would run for as long as it did without being replaced.... and the cost of computer memory for large computers in those days was very expensive so they tried every programming trick in the book to save on memory usage... down to the level of only using 2 digits to represent the calendar year instead of 4.

After the explosive hit of the GoldenEye video game a lot of the lines in this movie were easy to copy and were added to the N64 video game The World is Not Enough. That game had John Cleese give additional instructions as R speaking to Bond within the game
Incidentally after this movie his title in Die Another Day will change from R to Q.

Great reaction! This has always been one of my favorite Bonds. I was very moved by Q's exit. More so in retrospect, after having learned that Desmond Llewelyn died in a car accident shortly after the filming of this movie. Now, every time I see this movie, the scene where Q descends out of the scene I tear up.

Desmond Llewellyn had said he'd be happy to continue as Q until EON or God decided otherwise. However the producers decided this would be his last and gave him that great send off. Perfect timing as it turned out, as he was killed in a car crash 15 days after release.

Desmond Llewellyn's last appearance as Major Boothroyd AKA Q of course had to coincide with the most ridiculous, porn-level depiction of a nuclear physicist ever. The Moore era got goofy, but for me, this and Die Another Day were the peak. This was the stunt casting era, where you saw Denise Richards, Halle Berry and Teri Hatcher simply because they were big names at the time. The whole Brosnan era feels like it fan fiction written by a 13 year old boy. At times, that makes for some entertaining stuff, especially if you're the right age. When you're a teenager, you're not wondering why a college cheerleader with that kind of dialogue became a nuclear physicist. This whole era with the possible exception of Goldeneye comes off like an attempt to make Austin Powers obsolete. I do enjoy Sophie Marceau as a villain and some of the score, though. David Arnold knows what he's doing.

Desmond Llewelyn died soon after the release of the film, in a dreadful car accident. He had no plans to retire. He was an amazing man, for example, in World War II whilst a prisoner-of-war, caused so much trouble that he was eventually sent to Colditz Castle.
