This probably just became my favorite video on CZcams. It’s such a period piece and set in its age but still captures the thrill and love of racing of today. Thank you for posting this!

My Dad, Jerry Demele and his friend, Chuck Tatum built Crusader Formula Vee cars. When I was 16 Jerry told my mom he was going to buy me a 1970 Beetle that was about 12 years old, because he knew how to work on Beetles. What he failed to tell her was that he also knew how to turn a 1600 CC stock VW motor from a gutless wonder to what you hear in these cars. He hands me the keys to my Beetle, I start it and the engine roars to life like a V8. This thing was growling and shaking the ground. Jerry takes me down some empty street in Stockton burning up the tires. We get back, and my mom does not look to happy.

50+ years later, and while much has remained the same, so much has changed. Heads above rollbars, single layer driver suits over street clothes, guys in t-shirts and the rather hyper lady at 13 minutes, helping refuel in the hot pits in a sundress and sandles!

Is there anyone near The Villages, FL who raced or worked in Design/Technology of the Formula-Vee with Steve Burtis, the star of this video? We are honoring him next month at a reception, showing this video. Would love racing friends to attend!

I always thought this looked fun. We had VWs for a while (I don't think you can own just one air cooled VW). I had always hoped it would be DIY kind of thing. As soon as we met his team of mechanics I could see that went out the window. I guess it is still cheap compared to formula Ford or any or the upper classes.

basically no FV racers have "teams" like this shows. may be back then, when there weren't a lot of other classes, but now it is all family teams. and even if you are up against the rare prep-shop, you can still DIY it to wins.

Back when there was still a middle class and the cost of living and abundance of good jobs enabled the average guy to afford to race. All of that's gone.
