  • In this episode, weʻre investigating the hidden benefits of farming kalo at Kakoʻo ʻŌiwi, a non profit loʻi in Kāneohe that is working to restore the wetland for food production, cultural revival, and water quality improvement. Thank you for educating us on kalo/taro. Blessed to live in Hawaii and can manage a huge field of taro.

Did the Hawaiian's of old, EVER use "fretilizers" of now times? Or fish, limu and animals waste and what other benefits for proper GROWTH? Am I correct that They were specific in growing HAWAIIAN STYLE? Kahuna's was secret order?

This is a really great question! We reached out to some experts and are still working on finding more information.
What's really interesting to our thinking is whether kanaka used black soils (from human waste) like they did in Nepal/China rice paddies? All of the Hawaiʻi kapu around this says no. It has been suggested that perhaps Hawaiians used dog and pig waste, but we do not know of any evidence.
We would love to find some Hawaiian Language Newspaper, or othe,r writing on this. Green waste seems like it would have been a given-maybe the leaves from kō, maiʻa, or other tree litter.
Also - what did they do with their sediment when it built up? Still thinking about this question, too. How was it regulated going to the reef? Or was it?
