It's interesting to hear about Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich being prepared to become a Neo-Byzantine Emperor. It's a good material for some alternative history, as is the possibility of Konstantin becoming (or arguably staying) Emperor of Russia in 1825, instead of Nicholas. In our timeline, he played an important but ambivalent role in Polish history.

Funny how the Russian empire was one of the Major advocate in ending the 'Sick man of Europe' i.e the Ottoman empire and yet ironically they fell before the Ottoman empire.
Many would argue that the Empire really only fell in 1991.
But yes, the entity of the Russian Empire collapsed before the Ottomans.
I don't care so much about the Byzantine claim as the fact that we still don't have access to the Mediterranean... so close.
@@LancesArmorStriking Soviet politics and perspectives did largely match up with the empire they replaced, in kind of an ironic way. Some of it might have just been the geopolitics of operating a state from the Russian part of Eurasia, but they really pushed to restore imperial borders and pushed a lot of similar Russian language and culture policies too

To give you a Greek perspective on this whole thing, and on how relations can never be fully exploited, even if there is mutual interest and goodwill: The Orlov Revolt in 1770-71 was based on this plan you describe in the video. After Greece became independent, its first ruler Ioannis Kapodistrias wanted good relations with Russia, but without provoking the British too much, because Greece for practical reasons couldn't be anti-British, due to its maritime geography (the British navy had total control of the Mediterranean), the need to cultivate British support for expanding Greece's borders (generally this worked out well..) and the influence of the Greek ship-owners who were mostly based in London. Kapodistrias was assassinated in 1831 with British (and French) involvement and since then, all the way to today, Greece has been forced to be actively anti-Russian even though we don't really want this, because we see Turkey as our enemy, not Russia. And with developments such as the Ukraine war, there's now also pressure from the EU.
Wasn't Kapodistrias assassinated because of a feud between the Greek bey/clan leaders, including putting the veteran Petrobey Mavromichalis in jail? How are the British and French involved in his assassination?
Also, also, Greece has been distant with Russia ever since the Orlov Revolt, the Bulgarian Exarchate (which Russia supported), and the independence of the Slavic nations in the Balkans by Russia, including the Treaty of San Stefano (which allowed a Greater Bulgaria to stretch in Macedonia and Thrace). While the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the restoration of Constantinople to Christendom was one thing, they primarly looked upon the Pan-Slavic movement, which Russia sought to gain, at the expense of Greeks living in cities like Thessaloniki. While the Turks were indeed the primary enemies of the Orthodox Greeks, the Russian-backed allies, prominently Bulgaria, were not keen friendly to their Orthodox neighbors either. The Greeks even clashed with Bulgarians and Komitatzides in the regions that would encompass Northern Greece shortly before the Balkan Wars. That would give the impression why Greece cast their lot with the West (and eventually the EU), rather than the East. It was in the national interest to keep Bulgaria out from the Mediterranean Sea, as it would have become a satellite state of Russia, who would gain access to the Mediterranean either through Bulgaria's outlet or the Bosphorus Straits.

One could definitely argue that Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, qualifies with his heavy promotion of Iran's pre-Islamic (and especially Achaemenid) past. Though that involved much less territorial expansion than the Greek Plan and was more about the country's identity than its borders.
What you’ve got to understand is a lot of rather Islamist places heavily promote their pre Islamic past. The Islamic republic of Iran still does this. Iraq under Saddam was both outwardly religious and Babylonian at the same time. Gaddafi in Libya, etc.
The only place which I can think of that actively suppresses or ignores it’s pre Islamic history is Pakistan.
@@eca3101 Compared to Imperial Iran, the Islamic Republic dialed back a lot of that stuff. And Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and those parts of Syria and Iraq that fell to the Islamic State would be complete exceptions, to the point of trying to erase the physical evidence of their pre-Islamic past.

The Islamic republic brought emphasis on Iran’s Islamic history as well, but by no means did they even attempt to pretend to not care about Iran’s pre Islamic history. Their leaders talk about it all the time, they use those symbols, I can go on.

And at no point in the Islamic Republic of Iran's 42-year history did celebration of the pre-Islamic past reach the heights it did under the Shah. To give just one example, the Shah changed the calendar so that year 1 would correspond to the first year of the reign of Cyrus the Great rather than the Hegira, and Khomeini changed it back. Clearly I'm talking comparatively here, so I don't get what you think you're correcting me on.

And it seems you are half informed about Iran and the Middle East. The Islamic republic of Iran’s ambitions are often coined Neo Achaemenid. They see themselves as the rightful hegemonic power of the Mid East from the time of Cyrus the great to today. Not even the Shah thought that.
No one denies the shah favoured pre Islamic history before Islamic history, but the Islamic republic by no means ignores or even remotely sweeps under the rug it’s pre Islamic history

A new eastern Rome with a Russian emperor,population that contains a huge amount of Muslim turks a Roman identity the Greeks lost after the 4th crusade when the Latins sucked the city and its ancient artifacts. Even IF it happened sadly I doubt it would have worked. Greeks along many other cultures in history have been very clear on their destain on foreign born monarchs claiming their thrones. But an orthodox Russian raised by a Greek maid that would speak at least partially Greek and of the Romanov dynasty that has a fuck old connection with the last emperors would be more likely to succeed than King Otto of Greece and his Danish lineage.

And the Greeks used to rule in Italy during magna Grecia period byzantine periods. Both nations had competeting interest in the Mediterranean. Hitler had to take the pill to aid mussolini.
@@TheSteveRobinson 'got their ass handed back to him' not really, if you actually read what happened. the Italian generals knew they didn't have the men (due to the africa front sucking all the manpower) so they retreated back to a defensive line at the first real sign of trouble. then the greeks tried and failed to break this defensive line, and were running out of men and ammunition even at Britians best efforts to supply them, most Greek officers were even asking their supiroirs for permission to surrender to the Italians weeks before the germans invaded. and the Axis intelligence agencies knew this.
the germans didn't have to step in, they chose to step in because the whole greek invasion was Musilini being upset with Hitler, and so Hitler decided to put him back in his place.

one of the proposed plans for a partition of the Ottomans between the Austrians and Russians involved restoring Byzantium in Greece and Bulgaria, most of the Balkans going to Austria, and Romania going to Russia. Not sure if it was involved in that specific war or not, but I picked it up from my russian history professor.

1st - Some German militias attempted to bring back the old German crusader states in the Baltic's after WW1.
2nd - The ultranationalist Lehi tried to stage a coup against the Israeli government in 1948 in order to conquer the entire region and Jordan to revive the old Kingdom of Judea but were defeated on the beaches and arrested.
3rd - Piłsudski hoped to restore the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1920 but quickly realised that most in the opposition and government rejected a multi-national state and preferred a Polish republic.
1st- Not correct. The Ritterschaften merely declared that they would resume their former sovereignty over their territory, as the throne of Russia to which they had pleged allegiance was vacant. So they weren't bringing back anything that didn't already exist, they were merely bringing back it's sovereignty.

The Byzantine queen ran go Russia when Constantinople fell. It's only natural they would seek to restore what was lost.
In a way, the Byzantine Empire was restored with modern Greece. Most of the Greeks claim descendency from Byzantium and show more pride in that Empire than the Ancient Greeks. All you need to do to really bring it back is give Constantinople and perhaps the Western Coastline of Turkey to Greece.
In all fairness, the Byzantines (Romans) thought themselves as separate from the Greeks; so it's not a super legitimate descendency, I suppose.
@@woom_y True but as time had went on in the Middle Ages, the Empire got more associated with the Greeks. Also, classical Greek culture was gone by that time and replaced by Byzantine Greek Culture. Modern Greece today is more synonymous with Byzantine Greek culture than Classical Greece. You talk to a Greek and typically they have more affection for Byzantine Greece then let's say the Macedonian Empires of Alexander.
@@volbound1700 I definitely agree with the sentiment that Greece is connected to the Eastern Roman Empire culturally and historically, I just thought it was important to make the distinction that the Romans saw themselves as separate.
@@woom_y They definitely called themselves Romans until the very end of the Empire and I consider Byzantium to be an extension of the original Roman Empire. Civilizations change culture over time and the later Byzantine Empire was more and more Greek. Outsiders called it the Greek Empire. So you are definitely correct in the distinction that Byzantium is Rome and not Greek. However, modern Greece has a lot of connections to Byzantine, more so than ancient Greece.
So 1921 would be the year where the Byzantines came closest to making a return.
House of Savoy did have ALOT interests in creating Romana Savoia. even chose Rome as a new seat of unified Italy back in 1860s. This put them at odds with many other Italian kings and Austria as well as the Papacy itself.
there was no other italian king when savoy declared rome the capital of the newly born kingdom of italy, it didn't fare well with papacy, austrians and french thought, they even fought french troops in italy to reconquer rome from the papal states

Do you seriously compare the longevity of the empires you mentioned? Austria-hungary and the Russian empire went to war with the best general in history that managed to dismantle the Holy Roman Empire which was a 1.000 entity. They also had a lot more internal problems than the ottoman empire .

Trying to restore the Byzantine Empire is like trying to bring back old stuff you threw away many years ago, it would never be the same. It is extremely impossible the replicate the original ingredients of the Roman Empire by the 18th Century.

A quibble at 3:08: Catherine was apparently born in Prussia, but she herself was not Prussian: her parents were from the houses of Anhalt and Holstein-Gottorp. If anything, she was in the anti-Prussian faction during the Seven Year's War, and her husband Peter's pro-Prussian inclinations were the reason for his overthrow.
Nice, finally something that is even remotely related to Greece. You could also talk about the Megali Idea. King Constantine of Greece was also named that because the Greeks wanted to recreate the Byzantine Empire, but the plan failed in the end and the Greeks of Asia Minor were all killed.
@Joshua Mills Well you're kinda right but at the same time you're not giving the whole picture. As am I to be frank. The thing is that Turkey and the National assembly killed more or less 1 million Greeks in Anatolia by many cruel ways, and the rest up to 2,5 million were thrown into the sea, left in the European side or had to flee into the USSR from the mountains of Pontos. After this had been done, the Greek government thought that the best thing they could do was to at least get rid of the Turks as well. So the 600.000 Turks in Greece were sent to Turkey. But this was also done to make room for the Greeks that had already come into the Greek peninsula. Approximately 1,3 million Greeks were receiving government aid, and to those 200.000 more were added from Cilicia and Cappadocia at the same time the Turks were leaving. So at least 1,5 million went to Greece, more that didn't need economic aid and went unregistered, while also hundreds of thousands went to Cyprus, French Syria (especially Antiochia), USSR, Egypt (especially Alexandria) and Germany, Britain and America. The "population exchange" was more of a normalisation of the genocide and population replacement that had already forcibly taken place. Greece especially did not have any say in this.
