      @@hillbillyhenry5098 What a joke. That's an embarrassment of a company right there. I like ICCS grading out of Ontario. Honest grades, $10-14 per coin depending on if you're doing bulk or singles. They don't use slabs, it's a sealed mylar flip inside a sealed soft plastic flip with a 2×2 paper certificate in the opposite pocket. They charge you 14 bucks if the coin is worthless, they charge you 14 bucks if it's an MS-66 key date silver dollar, they charge you 14 bucks if it's a variety. But they aren't as broad at covering all the little varieties, just the major ones. But no BS scam service. You get exactly what you pay for and it's made very clear up front what you're paying.

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah you're right on that one, unfortunately though a lot of the time though there's a coin I just have to have but it's locked in plastic so I'm kinda forced to buy slabbed coins and then have to go through the sketchy process of cracking them out so I can appreciate them. It's kind of an ongoing battle between people who want slabs and people who don't care for them. More and more good coins get locked up by them as time passes and nice raw ones that I'm prepared to pay full graded retail for become more and more scarce. I don't mind buying the slab and cracking them though so long as the seller isn't charging more for the coin because it's slabbed. I've seen people charging 50 bucks for a 30 dollar coin because they're an idiot that sent off a coin that isn't worth the fees. That's where slabs get annoying because it limits the available options and to me that hurts the hobby.

    • @user-rr2vl9qv7j
      @user-rr2vl9qv7j Před 5 měsíci

      Yes but it also prevents the coin from being destroyed through handling. If everyone kept their coins loose in a coffee can or used the wrong plastic in their holders there wouldn't be any high grade coins to be had.

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci

      @@user-rr2vl9qv7j Yeah that is a valid point, but to me that risk of damage is what makes this hobby cool. If you lock it up in an airtight slab completely sealed off from the outside world then that coin's journey is over. It's not developing any more character. It takes zero effort to preserve it. It's like you just froze the coin in time. Which for some coins like full red Indian cents or a bag toned morgan pulled out at the perfect time is a good thing, but any collector worth his salt can keep an MS-67 morgan an MS-67 their whole life. I like buying that preservation. I'm buying the work of a good custodian. When you slab the coin the whole part of being a custodian of the coin is over. It's not impressive. I like that unbroken line of preservation where anything could have happened but didn't. And I pride myself in keeping my coins nice for the next generation. That's why I always crack them out of their plastic prisons. If they're super nice they go in an acrylic capsule. Those still allow a miniscule amount of air to circulate so the coin doesn't suffocate and die. Other than that, 2×2s and binder sheets keep them perfectly safe. Also unlike a slab, I can take my coins out to actually look at them and then put them back in. I have faith that collectors these days know enough to not mess up their coins. Most coins were ruined decades ago and haven't gotten any worse since. No collector is just throwing mint state barber dimes in a coffee can or PVC flips anymore.

    I have found with PCGS abd BGC, that no matter how pristine and spectacular a old coin is, it usually only garners a MS66, and you still get low grades on coins from proof sets. I think this tends to put off a lot if people from having coins graded

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci

      I mean a PF-66 is basically a perfect coin. They are tougher on proofs. When you get into 7s 8s and 9s the strike really plays a role. The surface can be near flawless on say a Frankie half, but if that "PASS AND STOW" looks a little smudgy and muttled it better not get a 67. And you shouldn't be buying it at a 7 or 8 unless it is well defined. Not always about the marks. On MS coins you can have a coin with the same marks as a 66 but if the lustre comes off dead they can bump that all the way down to a 63. They're called atypical grades. But they go the other way around too. If you have one with low 64 surfaces but a strong strike and booming lustre that can be bumped to a 5. It's crucial to really know these when buying raw coins because you can either get "scammed" because you and the seller thought it was a sure 4 that's really a 3 or you can score big by getting a 5 that the seller believes is a 4.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I disagree, it’s all about the marks. All proofs have near identical strikes, all Franks have full band lines. You just have to hold them at slanted angles and turn them to see the marks. Weak strike coins don’t get lesser grades, you can see that at Heritage and neither do toned proofs. You can see that by looking at archived auctions at Heritage. One thing about older proofs is they were mishandled and have more marks in them.

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@CoinHELPu Well I'll keep that in mind and take your word for it. After all I'm applying canadian grading methods to US coins which isn't really going to translate perfectly at those 66 and up grades. But I have looked at lots of proof Frankie's and have noticed you'll get those FBLs quite often like you say, but the strike in the letters on the bell itself will vary in terms of sharpness. To me personally any easily noticable weakness anywhere like that takes it out of being a super gem, not just the bell lines. But those are my rules for when I'm looking to buy, not necessarily PCGS, NGC, ANACS or CACG rules when grading. So there's conflicting opinions here I will admit. Yet another reason AI grading needs to be a thing.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Před 5 měsíci

      @@TheWinstonDouble we need AI’s consistency. A coin with less marks than a weaker struck coin with less could not be a grade less. Marks in a coin are the most distracting and penalizing factor, it has to be.
      Contact and mishandling damage the coins surface, the more contact damage the lower the grade.
      If I was grading a coin and the bell letters were weak but the coin had minimal marks, I would grade it higher than a coin with strong letters but more marks.

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@CoinHELPu Oh I absolutely agree with you on that. What I'm saying is that if the marks are the same but the strike is noticably weak on one, it should not attain the same grade at those super high levels. PCGS will not certify a practically flawless coin as a 69 if it has weakness. At least that's what they say in their Grading 101 or 102 video on strike. An AI grade could give you something like a GIA diamond certificate where it has all the diagnostics with surface condition and strike fullness and possibly lustre strength. Then buyers can be really well informed and buy what they value instead of possibly getting an atypical grade that doesn't have the qualities they look for.

    Isn't all toning technically artificial? Whether in a paper envelope over along time or toned quickly with whatever process? Now that everyone is upset with me I will say:
    Chemically altered surfaces is is different than toning that occurs over time. In albums, rolls, envelopes, etc... where the surfaces interact with the chemical in the storage to tone without help. I agree that there should be a details grade for altered/artificial surfaces. But based on your CACG submission, they are really coming down hard on natural toned coins. Unless coins are stored in an air tight, non-reactive container, they will most likely be toned up.

    I have three Dimes that looked like nicks on them and put them under a scope and it was tiny letters and the only way to see them was thru a scope and one has five letters and the others three to four, i hate to send these off but never ever seen nothing like this, could or do you know anything about these, and also a Dime with two faces and some body told me to spend it, but can you tell me anything about these Dimes because you need a high scope to see the tiny Letters , thanks your one of the best,.

    • @hillbillyhenry5098
      @hillbillyhenry5098 Před 5 měsíci

      I meant to say that these Letters are stamped into these dimes and are so small that who or the mint done it had to have a High Powered Scope to do this with because with my 250 you can hardly even make out what they are, glad i put the scope on them because they look like nicks.

      If you need a scope it means nothing and is pareidolia.

      Yes, I'm aware of that but haven't used one followed by the other before to see what the effects were. I've really only used the MS70. Thx !

    If sending coins in for grading what's the minimum number you recommend sending in to make it worth the cost?

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci +1

      That comes down to the shipping right? You want enough where the shipping averages $5 or less per coin, in my opinion. But don't just throw money to them by putting in coins that aren't worth grading. Usually you're doing good at like 12 coins minimum if they're nice and 15-20 if they're average. Keep in mind this is just my opinion for ICCS submissions. You're probably going with one of the big 4 US companies.

    Please tell me what you mean by population

    • @TheWinstonDouble
      @TheWinstonDouble Před 5 měsíci +1

      So population can mean a couple things, there's estimated survival population which is a guess of how many are still out there. Like a percentage of the original mintage. OR it can mean graded population. How many of that particular coin have been certified by a particular company. But those numbers aren't perfect. The same coin can be cracked out and resubmitted and be counted twice in the population figures.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Před 5 měsíci

      That is the reason I used the range of numbers, it can't be off that much until you get into the jump grades that jump in value.
