The Legend from Nowhere

- How do you come from a country that’s never produced a professional player and win player of the year in a major professional league? Well, that’s the story of Roy Krishna, a player who’s story I have wanted to tell for a long time. I am glad we were finally able to put it together, because it’s somewhere wilder than I even imagined.
Much Love,
The Zealand

@@montesmao i would give up in first place due to how unlikely to be a pro footballer like him at his country
I am a mohun bagan supporter. He played for us for two seasons in the Indian super league and we love him still to this day. His dedication on the field is unmatched. Thank you zea
Now he is ballin at Odisha FC
@@ZvenoGamingAbsolutely. Unbelievable performance for his age. Unfortunately this might be his last season in India with reports coming out that he might be moving back to new zealand to end his career where it started
As an East bengal I still like him
@@tactician27 wow, how new are these reports? As a Phoenix fan we've been praying on his return for years now, only for him to change his mind and stay in India. He's an unequivocal club legend and I would take him back immediately, either in Wellington or at the new A-League club in Auckland
@@smiis3149 pretty recent. We've been hearing he is going to join one of his former clubs and plans to end his career there. Most likely the two clubs are Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC
My local team is Odisha FC, and seeing Roy Krishna being featured on this channel gives me so much joy 😊
My local club in Australia (Central Coast Mariners) won their last season and had the Prime Minister of Vanuatu and his wife in attendance at the finals because the club has the only professional player from Vanuatu: Brian Kaltak.
isn't dan hall Fijian, don't think he's been called up to Aus or Fiji
Not to mention, he moved to the club when he was almost 29, only playing in new zealand at max level before, became the first pro ever from vanuatu being almost 29 years old, and won the Australian Championship in his first pro year, bossing the mariners defense. Absolute legend!
yup it looks like he'll play for fiji at some point. I'd be happy for the guy@@arranthomas5705
Kaltak really is the GOAT. An absolute machine of a defender. Wouldnt look out of place in any league in the world
@@arranthomas5705Oh man, he is too! I always thought he was a Kiwi.
Roy is a Wellington Phoenix legend 💛🖤 We once had a chat on the street! Thankyou for shining light on this beast🔥COYN
As someone who used to attend games when I lived in Wellington for a year, I really have to start watching the Phoenix again because I'm well out of touch with who has been playing for them and how they've been going. I did see that they're top of the league at the moment though, right?
I used to serve Leo Bertos occasionally when I was working at Kilbirnie Subway. I was always too shy/cool to try to strike up a conversation with him, but I always sensed that he sensed I was a supporter.
@@AholeAtheist yeah the nix are top of table at the moment. Home games are going strong (one we were at the other day had 12,000 attendees, good for a welly game. Most of the squad now are academy players but Kosta Barbarouses is on fire like he was back in the day, They’re definitely playing like a solid team now. I used to work at a subway and always wondered which “celebrity” would come in 🤣 best we had was Peter Jackson from memory…
@@AholeAtheist If you live in Welly and you had an interest in the Nix prior, you should be at every home game
@@liambazza9078 I don't. I LIVED in Wellington for a year back in 2009.
Roy Krishna will play against A league club Central coast mariner in March for the AFC cup
He is an indian league football legend. Kudos to Zealand talking about him
Love seeing some A-League content here. We've got a similar story going on right now with Brian Kaltak at Central Coast. Only played his first professional game last season at 29 years old, and quickly established himself as one of the best centre backs in the league. He's the first professional player to come out of Vanuatu, and his story is pretty incredible too
and he also won the grand final
As a Bengaluru FC fan, absolutely loved him when he was playing for us, I really would have liked him to stay with our current striker issues, but none the less, absolute ISL legend.
#WeAreBFC We are missing Roy Krishna so much. Hope Drost can replace Krsna at some inspects
Important to mention that along with Paul Ifill (coincidentally, the guy whose injury triggered Krishna's emergency signing back in 2013), Roy Krishna is considered the Phoenix's best ever player.
There's a famous Roy Krishna story from his Wellington Phoenix days that still gets shared around now. Ahead of the 17/18 season, we hired Bosnian manager Darije Kalezić - our first ever manager without any A-League experience. He was a flat-out awful hire, who lost the dressing room immediately and couldn't get the best out of Krishna who had only four goals in his 21 games. After one particularly tough loss, Kalezić came into the dressing room in front of the entire team brandishing a Fijian rugby jersey and threw it at Krishna, telling him he might as well play a different sport. Kalezić was dumped midway through the season, we salvaged 9th place, and we almost lost Krishna to the Colorado Rapids in the MLS as he was so disillusioned with the club. They didn't match our asking price for him though - and Krishna promptly followed up his poor 17/18 return by grabbing 34 goals and 11 assists in the next two seasons (48 games). An unequivocal club legend, and we still hold out hope he returns home one day
Did not know that story as a Nix fan, that's awful. We were lucky Krishna didn't leave.
Krishna was also trying his hardest every week that season but the team and coaching staff around him was poor.
@@samwansbone2790 Awful season. At least we got the breakouts of Singh and Cacace that year, plus Krishna's iconic bleached hair haha
@@smiis3149 Yeah that and avoiding the spoon somehow. Singh and Cacace also only started playing regularly past the halfway mark of the season (when the season was all over). Also beat Newcastle away (that was the season they were really good and were dudded over in the gf) that season but yeah.
I’m just hoping he dunks against the wellington phoenix for Odisha fc in the afc cup 😂😂😂
"put down two posts and play"
THIS is why football is the greatest sport in the world. You can be anywhere and all you need is something to kick and two lumps and you can play. Tennis ball and two jumpers, coke bottle and a doorway it doesnt matter, the game is accessible and allows miracles like this to happen.
Which is why football is a universal sport.
At home it was two slippers and a ball of socks lol
@@MrJorge3010 back in my day we played with rocks
@@Evan-eh6eg At home? Jeez
You dont even need two sticks. From where I am we used to use our shoes as goalposts and played barefoot. The greatest sport in the world indeed.
As a local from fiji football is eaten by corrupt high officials , it has been the same president, ceo ,etc for fiji football every year with no experience in playing football.
As a Odisha FC fan, roy Krishna has changed our fortune, we are now a table topper's in ISL,
8:24 True. He really broke down barriers for pacific islander players here in australia.
He opened the door for players like Vanuatuan Brian Kaltak - who is one of the best centre backs in an any asian league - The guy is a machine and only signed his first pro contract at 28!
All this really goes to show how much inequality is in football. Its sad to think about how many good players never succeeded; whether due to poverty, discrimination, geography etc.
Stories like this though show that maybe one day we might be able to turn football into a real meritocracy
That follows to everything else in this world too, how many possible Einsteins have we never had because they were severely malnourished as a child?
What a shame he didn't go to PSV, he would have been great in our league.
One of my favourite players to play for my local team Wellington Phoenix, what an absolute gun Krishna was.
I'm from the same home town as Roy Krishna *and* from the same part of Auckland! There's a couple of small mistakes with pronunciation (Lam-basa, Wai-tah-kah-ray) or geography/history (Siberia is his village in Labasa his province is Macuata Province, Football is the main sport in Labasa with the Lions as our pride) but Roy Krishna ultimately is one of the most inspirational figures not just as a Football fan but as a Fijian man. I had to stop the video multiple times because my chest was so bursting with pride I thought it was going to explode. Thank you so much for this video, I'm glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
And the pronunciation of Waitakare
As a fijian, I am so proud of Roy krishna and I was moved to tears by the video, I never thought a player from my country would've caught the eyes of someone like you Zealand. Feelsstrongman
Roy Krishna is a household name of Kolkata. I don't know your country. But when I watched him who comes from Fiji and scored goals daily for our Mohun Bagan club. I just converted his fan. May God bless him. And all fijian and Indo Fijian🇫🇯 brothers take my love from Kolkata.
There was quite a buzz when he joined the ISL a few years ago. He's been brilliant here and deserves his recognition. What a story!
Thanks for covering it Zealand
As an Aussie I know of another player like this his name is brain kaltak and he’s from Vanuatu and he won the league last year with ccm and the pm of Vanuatu was in attendance in the final he played in
Another thing which i like about him is that he has played for 3 teams in 3 years and has done well for every team
I'm from India, he's a legend of the league due to his work rate, even at 36 he never stops running
He's never played for my club (Mumbai City FC), but will always respect him for his contributions to our league
Roy krishna is doing great mate in Indian Super League(ISL) since his arrival now he is playing for Odisha FC and he is the current top goal scorer of ISL as well ..a true fighter
Seeing Krishna came from playing the Semi Pro in New Zealand to the Aleague at Wellington Phoenix, you saw his raw talent from the set, I said to a mate “give this guy a year of Professional training” he’d be the one of best striker in the league.
UP THE NIX🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Roy Krishna will play against A league club Central coast mariner in March for the AFC cup
10th in the world in rugby, and also has both the men's rugby Olympic golds!
Was lucky enough to meet him a couple times when he was in the A League, he's a top bloke & was always happy to stick around long after matches to chat with people at the ground even if we weren't Wellington supporters. Good to see someone with a platform showing him some love.

Hes going to be playing until hes 40, because he wants this, it means everything to him and im happy for him as he deserves it.
saw krishna in the thumbnail and clicked instantly, remember him fondly from his time in aus, even tho I dont support the team he played for. glad to see he's getting recognition, unreal player
As a Nix fan, this man is one of our best ever player💛🖤🔥
I spent some time in Fiji and the people are absolutely lovely. Roy Krishna is my first purchase in every FM or fifa save
This stories are my new favorite theme on your channel.
Always been fascinated by him when we first appeared on FIFA. Was great for a road to glory save, rapid pace
I legitimately teared up watching this video. This story was amazing and I hope Roy keeps fucking smashing goals.
Well he's still balling for my club, scored his 11th goal in 15th match of the season today. And he's hungry for more 💜🖤 Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. Love from Odisha Bro
As a huge fan of the A-leagues (aus domestic football leagues) this is cool to see you do. Such a well put together piece
Krishna is the best. Best fijian-indian player who ever lived :)
Indians aren't allowed dual citizenship, he is just Fijian
@@nuyt6 look we get this bit, but you have to understand the context behind the term "Fiji-indian" it's not something we just say cause of nationality but cause of ethnicity and the tensions between native Fijians and the girmitiyas that settled in Fiji
@@ggsnipes Yeah i meant it as a cultural/ethnic group. I'm pretty sure krishna himself identifies as fijian-indian.
Either way, an amazing player
@@jord.an6123 yeah you’re all good bro, I was replying to another fella trying to be pedantic
I saw Roy Krishna play while he was at Wellington Phoenix! Absolute legend. I think he could have played in Europe when he was in his late 20s.
He became famous in India by playing in kolkata based club.
He also played in Mohunbagan ( ourclub).
Till the date he loves us we loves him and missed him so much.
He is the fox in the box type of footballer.
Due to some misunderstanding with our old coach juan ferando he leaves .
But by heart he is still a mariner ❤💚
Joy mohunbagan ❤💚
Great to see Australia getting some football love. Krishna is a great story. Any chance you would cover the Central Coast Mariners?? As they are one of the crazier A-League clubs.
That final last year against Melbourne City was beautiful.
love how Aussies only started to claim him since he became good lol. this is not an Australia story, he has nothing to do with Australia apart from happening to play in their league, having lived in an entirely different country
This story isn't about Australia, however, I do agree that CCM would make for an interesting video.
@@sorrynotsorry8224 Yea fair, I'm just happy people playing in Australia are getting attention.
I'm not trying to claim him although I'm sure Graham Arnold would have tried. The story takes place in Australia for a part and I'm glad the A-League found him and gave him a chance. Hopefully there are more players that get a chance from Fiji and other Oceania nations like Brian Kaltak. @@smiis3149
i am not a fan of Mohun Bagan but they have always been my 2nd favorite club in India since a player from my country plays there, this is the way i found about him, still legend on my FIFA career mode
Mate, I discovered Roy Krishna in 2015, when I was searching for players from far away countries in fifa 16 and he was the only fijian, and in the next yars his card was almost a gold so I started watching him and since them I've been watching him quite regularly especially in India and with the national team. Glad you made a video about him.

I haven't been looking through all your videos - I just enjoy them as they come along.
If you're ever looking for a phenomenal player many (outside Germany) might haven't even heard of: Think of Mehmet Scholl, and the fact that Barca was willing to pay 80 million in 97ish or something to sign him, right after single-handedly killing them in the UCL. Unsuccessfully.
Well I'm from India and majority of the people love Roy Krishna here. He is such a great player and a superb team man i haven't still seen such great team person who gives everything for his team ❤️🔥.
Once a mariner always a mariner 💚❤️
He is now with us odisha fc ROY KRISHNA
Kia Ora from Wellington! Love your channel.
I was working in Fiji in 2005 and I remember distinctly being told of the "Fijian Rooney" playing in their league. Because of that I've always kept an eye on his career.
I wasn't surprised when Waitakere signed him as talented Pacific Islanders often end up in the NZ league. The Phoenix, under coach Ricki Herbert (the same guy who coached NZ to the WC finals in 2010), trialed him twice and didn't sign him. When they finally signed him, he languished on the bench for ages. As a Wellington Phoenix fan, I absolutely love what Roy did for us but I'm also immensely disappointed we did not recognize his talent and utilise him a lot earlier.
The ISL has a history of disappointing, big money signings from Europe. Ecstatic to see it was a Hindi speaking Fijian who set that league on fire. Shout out to David Williams who left the Phoenix with Roy and joined him in India. The two of them combining on the field is a joy to watch.
If Roy did come back to the A-League; it would be hard to see him in Auckland colours but he will always remain a Phoenix legend.
I think his bench time is credit to Merrick giving him time to adjust to the league. He wasn’t ready when he arrived.
