    Never thought I'd see a Weiss Schwarz video on your channel! If you plan to do another video on the game, feel free to shoot me a message been playing for about 10 years now both in English and Japanese and can provide you with information about the game, the competitive scene, and secondary market. Hope to see more random Weiss Schwarz content from you soon Rudy and thanks for the content!

    I wanted to get into this game but, when I was asking a guy about it at Origins last year. The guy running the booth was kind of a jerk so I just went elsewhere and bought more Magic cards. Kind of a shame the game looks interesting.

    I recently bought product from Rudy's magic and more store on ebay and in a message I joked about him throwing in a card for free 'cause it's probably worth like three fiddy anyway (the card is Splendid Genesis and I expect Rudy to know it's priceless and probably worth an actual imperial fucktonne of cash). Rudy didn't seem to catch that which led me to believe Rudy a) has a warehouse full of goblins doing his bidding and is the goblin king, how would a warehouse-goblin know the worth of a legendary card? OR b) someone else runs Alpha Investments for real and Rudy is a prisoner used to make these videos because of his good looks and charm! Rudy: If you're held prisoner blink three times and say the code-phrase "Homelands is my favorite set!" and we'll mount a rescue-operation!

    Weiß has a psuedo-ranmdom distribution. When you opened the RRR climax in the first pack, it was guaranteed that you were not going to open an SP. That being said, you opened a RRR in your box and a SR, so the box was above average

  • @AutisticBoardGamer
    @AutisticBoardGamer Před 6 lety +1

    Rudy, it doesn't lock you into a color. To play a card that is above level 0 you must have a single card of that card in your current damage OR in your level cards. For those that don't know once you take your 7th damage, you pick one of those 7 cards put it into your level zone and the rest go to the discard pile. So the level zone locks in a color, so you can play that color freely for the rest of the game.

  • @meister3057
    @meister3057 Před 6 lety

    Hey Rudy, thank you so much for doing this video!
    Weiss as you said is so very interesting, because there's standard play, like not unlike Magic or Pokemon. And then there's Neo-standard, which is very much like cycle/block limited play, except you can take that deck and fight other decks not necessarily from the same cycle. This essentially is a "waifu war" game mode where you take your favorite set, build a deck around your favorite character(s) and go bash someone else's waifu in.
    Neo-standard is where I live. I play pure Cinderella Girls, the Japanese version as the English game only released the 1st booster. It is a really popular series in Japan and the cards can get very expensive because the set is considered one of the most capable (the Cinderella Girls set have a banlist in that language) because while their Level 3 cards didn't have a lot of complicated effects, it was so ridiculously consistent that it won more often in a very random game environment.
    I know you were hoping for something epic, but once you pulled the SR, THE SHOW'S OVER. (snirk) SPs, SSPs, RRRs, SRRs, they all share the same slot as the SR in a box, so if you pulled an SR, you know that's it for the box. But even so, Weiss cards, even in higher rarities can be really cheap in comparison even if said card was central to the Persona set. Persona cards tend to be cheaper overall, even the rare ones. In contrast, a signed Level 3 card from my chosen set tops at something like 12800 yen, and when the set was new and unbanned that card hit something like 32800yen in the secondary market.
    The value of Weiss is very dependent on player personal preferences. What I value as a 100 dollar card in Cinderella Girls would be worth absolutely nothing to a Love Live player (and vice versa, Cinderella Girls and Love Live players are pretty much openly hostile to one another haha). Likewise, cards of men tend to value lower than female. Heck, cards of popular characters with great art on the paper AND voiced by famous Japanese voice actresses are beyond-explicably expensive; case in point, again, an ancient 3/2 that did essentially nothing in the modern Weiss environment, still values at 100000+ yen when gem mint just because it had a printed signature of an evergreen super popular voice actress. Crazy right, when the card doesn't even play a voice clip!!
    Weiss cards very rarely even keep their value. In fact, they keep depreciating over time. Neo-standard is the main way the game is played so as a set becomes old, it often fades from general memory and unpopular series cards don't value as highly as a modern popular series.
    Weiss is also very prone to power-creep; Music decks in Weiss have incredible synergy and with each set these Music type cards just kept getting more and more of them. As such, Music-type sets are notorious for having historically shifted the game from mostly fun flavorful effects to the current meta of utility cards printed every new set which makes a lot of decks play like each other. (Woe be to you if your set was less popular and came with less utility). As a result, older sets not only suffer from popularity degradation, they some times have less tools than a newer set to deal damage and exert control over their own deck.
    All this makes Weiss a TERRIBLE investment vehicle, which is why I was really surprised to see it appear here. My friend is a large Persona fan and has several Persona decks, so he's pretty happy to see his pet set here.

  • @BoatsDontSink
    @BoatsDontSink Před 6 lety +2

    Also, after watching the box opening, you hit pretty well. The RR's are essentially your Mythic Rares, while SR, RRR, and SP are all varying levels of foils. SR, RRR, and SP are all just shinier versions of existing cards and don't have any unique cards themselves. In a case, you'll hit about 16 SR, 6 RRR, and 3-4 SP (It's a set ratio within each release, but it differs from release to release based on how many cards of each rarity there are)

    • @BoatsDontSink
      @BoatsDontSink Před 6 lety

      eubreaux All recent Japanese sets have had either 4 RR 2 SR+ or 5 RR 1 SR+. In a case of 18 boxes, it ends up being 10 boxes with the 5 RR 1 SR+ split and 8 boxes with the 4 RR 2 SR+ split.
      They stopped the solid 4 and 1 thing a LONG time ago.

    • @BoatsDontSink
      @BoatsDontSink Před 6 lety

      Even in 2016, the 4 and 1 was definitely not solid. To Love Ru, a set released in autumn 2015 (along with plenty of other sets from that time and even back to late 2013-early 2014) had multiple combinations of foils that were possible and could leave you with more than 1 foil per box. Almost every set from 2014-2015 and after did not replace the regular foil when you got an SP, so that was already 2. Many of them also had boxes where you could pull both an SR and RRR in the same box.

  • @brningpyre
    @brningpyre Před 6 lety

    It's also worth noting for anyone interested in Weiss that unlike Magic (where all the different languages can be played together), Japanese and English Weiss Schwarz are totally different formats. The best Magic equivalent comparison would be that Japanese is Modern, and English is Standard.
    Totally different card pools (many sets aren't out in English, some cards from released sets aren't included, or are changed (nerfed) when ported to English), different ban lists, and therefore different metagames.
    Since the deck construction rule everyone uses is Neo-Standard, it's something like having different Block-Constructed decks play against each other. So if you play a Persona deck (like what Rudy opened here) you can build your deck from the Persona sets, and you can play it against someone who plays a deck built from all the Attack on Titan sets, for example. The Magic equivalent would be like having a Zendikar-block (but including the newer block) deck vs an Innistrad (including the newer block) one.
    Weiss is a lot of fun, and cheaper than Magic (usually). I don't want to be a downer, but I should add that Bushiroad (or whoever they contract out localization to) make a ton of translation mistakes, so if you play English, be prepared to read their (lengthy) errata page.

    Not sure if someone said it already, the ratios are pretty consistent per set, in the case of Persona 5, you get either 4 RRs and 2 SP/RRR/SR or 5 RRs and 1 SP/RRR/SR.
    In the case of your box, you got the RR Joker which is the most expensive card in the set and i think the most expensive SR in the set, so you did pretty well tbh

    in regard to quality issues: the first 3 blocks of force of will in germany had some really bad issues. Foils with faded colors, cards which were light played out of the booster (probably due to bad cutting with a dull blade), chinese cards instead of german. And those weren't one time concurrences, but something which happened often. Luckily since the new block those issues are mostly vanished.

      Since there is no rotation once you have your deck, you dont really need to buy more cards to comepte (unless your set gets another expansion which doesnt happen that often). Especially on the JP side of the game you can get top meta decks for ~100-150 bucks that don't rotate so it ends up being cheaper than a lot of other games.
      Foiling stuff out can be very expensive though

    Rudy, you need to do an episode on your game collection. I wanna feel superior to you in at least one category of collecting ;)

    You finally did a box opening of WS! And really decent pulls, you even got the best card in the set as your RR in the first pack. Too bad no SP this time (but yeah, there only are 2 parallel foils in a box, so after seeing you pull a RRR and a SR, I already knew you missed the SP jackpot).
    For those who want to learn more about the game, here is an (old) youtube video that explains really well how to play it: czcams.com/video/jAAZf0rcysU/video.html
