      I also have a chihuahua/jack russel and she is the most perfect dog I have ever owned. We really focused on positive reward based training when she was younger, and lots of socialisation work to show her the world wasn’t that scary (She was so tiny!). We have people commenting that they usually ‘hate small dogs’ but they love her. It really is about the work you put in when they are young.

    • @sakitoby1581
      @sakitoby1581 Před 8 měsíci

      @@vikingdogmanshipRussells are Russells with regard to the general issues. Intelligence is not primarily what makes dogs easy to train. In fact it can be a handicap. Too smart can make training a challenge. What matters more is the dogs' desire to please humans. It boils down to what we humans bred them to do. Terriers and in particular Russells were bred to be vermin hunters--smart, quick-thinking, brave. They take initiative & face challenges without needing a lot of direction from humans. That also is what makes them hard to train. They are not hardwired to seek human approval and they usually feel they know best so they don't take direction well at all. They're stubborn and independent so they often will refuse to do what's asked. People watched Fraser on TV in 90s and thought the dog Eddie was so cute and well-behaved, they started going out & buying Russells. Guess what, it became a nightmare for those of us in dog rescue. Tons of them were subsequently surrendered when ppl found out how difficult they are and NOT lap dogs, despite small size. They just aren't right for most households. They belong on farms or large properties with savvy owners who are experienced with terriers.

I love every breed for their unique qualities but I know which breeds are suitable for me and which are not. I wish more ppl did research and came to same conclusions because when it's a good fit for dog and person, it's a total win-win. Horse ppl sound like a very good fit for a high-energy, smart terrier. The lifestyle is active, outdoorsy, stimulating. I love that for them. It's so very key to know and understand what a breed was bred for. It's so much more an indicator of whether the dog is a good fit for a household than size or appearance. I counsel ppl all the time on this at rescue meet & greets. ☺

    • @EmperorChrisKo
      @EmperorChrisKo Před 7 měsíci

      Yes.... and if you extrapolate a bit further, you get reality.
      A vast majority of dog owners do little more than take care of the basic physical needs of animals, leaving the dog to fill in the rest.
      So why would any human with a brain get a working breed to begin with if they plan to coop it up in an apartment?
      The answer is ignorance and people buying purely for looks.

    • @1milliondogs
      @1milliondogs Před 6 měsíci +9

      Yep. It's obviously a hot topic right now and people rarely seem to grasp the nuance. It's all about training AND breed. One of the issues is that a lot of people pick the breed of dog on aesthetics over temperament, which is obviously completely the wrong way to go about it.

    • @ez6888
      @ez6888 Před 6 měsíci

      @@1milliondogsit’s not “completely wrong”. Aesthetics is also a function, in and of itself. It’s a job like all the others. It’s just a job that’s become much more dominant in the market in modern times. It’s the modeling, a genuine job, for dogs. They are models and attendants rather than security, laborer, pest control, etc. Just like when converting them to any job in the past it’ll just take time for the rough edges to smoothen.. bcuz that human will needs to achieve its aim, time. If you looked at a wild wolf, you wouldn’t say that beast is suitable to protect your wife and babies at the house while you are away but over time we came to create a great many quality guardian breeds that would lay down their life to protect the women and young of the house rather than be an active threat to them like a live wild wolf would be. Us humans are now looking for dogs to be more like general attendants to us so naturally it’ll take a bit of time for the breeds to adapt. Lack of current suitability isn’t enough to deter human will when the potential for our wish is there. What ppl should be doing instead of sticking their nose up at ppls wishes is trying to set up an understanding of how to adjust to the rough edges in the meantime while the breeds are adapting.

      Yes so many people get border collie and cattle dogs like blue heelers and Australian shepherds because they’re cute but don’t look at their nature and natural behaviors. They can be very active, territorial, and have herding tendencies that can cause problems with other dogs. German shepherds or Malinois are high energy and protective but they live to please their owners. Huskies in contrast are high energy and have zero desire to please their owners. This is one of the reasons why they are one of the number one dogs euthanized in the US. They are not protective so they can't even be a guard dog, high-energy, and notoriously untrainable because they have no desire to please. Rottweilers are a dream. Huskies are not. That might be all fun and games but the reality is when it comes to a home life or any life, you want a dog that wants to work with you. Very intelligent but still a strong prey drive. Have a squirrel nearby? Forget about any recall. They understand the recall command, but simply decide to ignore. Very cuddly and fluffy. Very greatly and low maintenance except the tons of hair around the house. You just need to accept 😂

Other than having to put him in his kennel when we were having male guests, we never had any problems. He was kind with all of our other animals of which we had horses, cats, chickens,other dogs. @@bmxriderforlife1234You're obviously the unusual sort that can handle them, but the very fact that you need to rescue these animals means MANY are NOT ABLE to manage them appropriately.

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 Před 8 měsíci +2

      @dgeneeknapp3168 it's not that difficult it's just society now seems to lack the basic concept of research first and work your way up to things.
      But we should account for those responsible owners and rescue situations. Some pure working breeds make good pets if you take into account a few things and also want them to perform mild work duties like watch dog for the house and children. Poodles besides miniatures are often in homes with kids and are not a very child friendly breed tbh. I'd trust a Caucasian raised by someone with kids before I trust a poodle raised with kids. Caucasian is much more likely to be docile towards them. Poodles have a high bite rate on kids.
      And yet look at doodle popularity. Like alot of the badass breeds aren't that hard to own unless you just are physically able-bodied enough. And I'm not even talking just restraining them less then that. Some training tools as well. If you aren't willing to use em if need be done get those breeds. But even many family pet breeds could be a nightmare then.
      Combination of lack of research and understanding and a overly praise based society these days. Even with children oh no contests everyone's a winner. Participation awards. Add in not willing to use any forms of discipline and yeah.
      Alot of people just shouldn't have dogs. Or only be allowed to get adult already properly trained and socialized dogs.

    Super healthy, too. My old dog Taz, was Boxer/Shep and he lived to 18-19. He was running and playing up until 6 months before he passed, even survived a stroke.

    As a person who grew up around a Lot of different dogs and owner of 2 currently, I also would never get a jack russell again. My current one may be mixed but she is 100% temperamental and has been since day 1. I love my dogs, but I would also never get a beagle again, even mixed. They are full of boisterous personality that includes a lot of barking, digging, and demanding (almost to the point of aggression) attention of visitors and strangers. He has been the hardest dog to train of all the dogs we've ever had. I'd get a lab or lab mix again though. They're wonderful! Also, cockerspaniels are pretty great as well!

    I had a jack Russell from age 11-27 and she was the best dog I could ever ask for. Her name was Lizzie and she was my best friend for 16 years. From little league baseball all the way to combat deployments overseas. It’s all in how you raise them.

    My nephew owns four huskies. He started out fostering all four but he couldn’t give them up.

    I have 2 Siberian Huskies. We work as a team just fine because of our life code; I don’t GAF, they don’t GAF. It’s perfect!

    As a former owner of a Siberian Husky you are 100% correct about their "cat like" behaviors, but i'll tell you what, I've never owned a more loyal dog..ever!
    You most definitely have to know what you're getting in to with a Siberian, but if you've trained them properly and you get past the terrible twos (3 years old before they even think of settling down) you've got one hell of a good dog.

    Ahahaha my cat is, I guess, what a husky should be. She’s very friendly and loving, brings us her toy to show that she loves us, make sure to wake my little one up she doesn’t sleep well or if she’s sleeping on the wrong side of the bed, I ask her to go check on my child, and she goes to wake her up and then comes back to me waiting for love because she’s a good girl ❤

    Lol I had a Russell growing up too, well, she was Parson and Rat Terrier. So basically Jack Russell but taller. She was my best friend and I miss her still. Loved until she was almost 18. She loves digging holes and going after small critters in the yard.

    As someone who grew up with a Caucasian shepherd, I can tell you of a very surprising "use" for this breed - nanny dog. My parents always knew where me and my brother were, Rexie would always "round" us up. Also, he was ridiculously intelligent - he was my father's dog and dad barely needed to speak to give commands, they had such a strong connection that even the slightest changes in body language were sufficient for communication. While I DO agree with this gentleman that it's a very "difficult" breed to have, if you are the right type of person, the Caucasian shepherd can be a godsend. I swear, sometimes I still think Rexie and my father shared some sort of telepathy 😊

    My Jack Russell was really well behaved, was better off leash than on, and stopped a break in. She took a chunk out of the guy’s face while he was climbing in the window. If you have time to run them they make a great family dog. I love the breed. Plus we never had mice.

    Agree! I had a Jack Russell mix named Rosie for 15 years. Just wow. lol Loved her dearly and she loved us but was a total menace to anything else. She thought she was 10 ft tall and immortal.
    We had a husky named Sasha years ago and they really are independent.
    I won’t even consider having a large working / protective dog .
    We have heelers, Aussie mixes, a hound,a cocker, poodle, shihtzu, Pomeranian, pug/Boston terrier mixes, and a lab. All awesome dogs!
