- The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC EQ Boost as the first petrol model is powered by a in-line 6-cylinder (R6) engine systematically electrified with 48-volt technology. Its performance data: 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, with a further 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW/22 hp available via EQ Boost over short periods. The Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), part of Mild Hybrid system, is responsible for hybrid functions such as EQ Boost or energy recuperation, while allowing fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology.
The 48-volt on-board power supply serves not only high power consumers such as the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, but also the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which also supplies energy to the battery by means of highly efficient energy recuperation.
Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic consumes 9.6-8.3 l/100 km (combined) - Mercedes claims. I checked fuel consumption and fuel economy on a trip to check how Mild Hybrid system works. On this movie you have footage from every second of this real-life test.

I wonder, what the constant switching off do to the engine, how it effect the reliability. I mean the mHEV is a great idea, I just curious how it will last.

Spicy Mocha there is no tests or information showing that the engine would be affected in a bad way by the mild hybrid system. The engine is built to withstand such use.. and I’m pretty sure that there has gone trough allot of engineering to make this as smooth and reliable as possible.

Will the combustion engine go off automatically and if it does in what situations this will happen ?
As you can see the engine shuts off automatically. The movie shows when it happens exactly :) It is enough to just let the gas pedal off.
Not understanding what’s time with combustion engine switched-off means
It is the time when combustion engine was completely off.
1. It seems that when the engine restart, it consumes significantly more fuel than if it wasn't shut in the first place. I also share the concern of how the constant restarts affect the health of the engine.
2. It appears that while coasting, the 48 volt system doesn't really drive the car and the speed constantly drop. What if you are driving on constant speed with speed limit? Does coasting occur? Will the system be able to save fuel?
3. In other Asian hybrid cars which are not (plug in) that system really save a lot fuel and very clear on consumption charts you see impressive numbers. I wonder what would be the average consumption of that engine without the 48 volt system. How big is the difference?
1. It is normal that engine consumes a little bit more than during normal work, but you have to count time when the engine is switched off and, what is obvious, does not consume anything. Usually, after few seconds switched off the engine it is clear that you saved some fuel.
2. You do not understand what is Mild Hybrid. Mild Hybrid is not a hybrid which allows you to drive (use power to drive the car) using electric energy only. Mild Hybrid allows to switch off the combustion engine during the drive - coasting with ICE off.
3. How can you say that in any Toyota/Hyundai car hybrid saves some fuel when usually there is not similar configuration with and without hybrid? You do not see that this Mercedes is really big and heavy car (~2300 kg) and this car has really strong V6 engine (367 HP) and despite this GLE 450 MH consumes 8,5 l/100 km in a city. Show me any other car similar size, with similar power which consumes less (which is not Plug-In Hybrid car).
