I made a Cadian themed army once. They were fabulous. Basically, they served as the entertainment for the entire Astra Militarum (U.S.O. show), and were known as the Cadian Cabaret. They even had their own unique special rule called Chorus Line, where each turn required one unity to get in line and dance as a distraction (leadership test where if failed would effectively pin the three unit that failed, and the Chorus Line unit was rendered totally vulnerable to any and all attacks (hot on a roll of 2+, auto wound with no save). "Cadians, get out the and dance like your lives depend on it! For the Emperor!" Got my ass kicked a bunch of times, forced a few draws, and even had a decisive victory, but no one left the game without thinking it was the most fun and hilarious battle ever.
Shall I tell you the story of Sister Boudica of the 10,000? She was the most powerful, strong and the quickest wit of the custodes. She was also the big bad boss lady that ran a tight ship and totally wasn’t a total b*£ch. She was on The Vengeful Spirit with The Emperor but unfortunately her time of the month came at the worst moment and she had to excuse herself to midship bathrooms. Khorne was pleased as he cares not from where the blood flows. When she returned history had been written, The Emperor was crippled and Horus unexisted. Once the entourage returned she gave those of the Custodes who failed to be there when Big E fell to Horus of House Heresy. After all it couldn’t be HER fault she had to excuse herself to the midship bathroom. As The Emperor was placed upon The Golden Throne there wasn’t a single dry eye nor a single sound save that of Sister Boudica screaming at the top of her lungs that she couldn’t believe how incompetent The Custodes were and if she had been there Horus would have been defeated in no time and Big E would be whole and healthy. She was the best of the best you know, the greatest custodes, none were her equal. Since the beginning of the 10,000 she has always been there.

You are kinda wrong, Catachan is far more dangerous to invade, during the opening of the great rift Catachan was invaded by orks, Tyranids and chaos forces, they defeated them all and by the time Gulliman got to them the jungle fighters were already ready to join the crusade, its implied that the jungle ate chaos daemons, not banished, eaten whole body and soul
Cadia was literally on the edge of the Eye of Terror. It's why the area AROUND Cadia, was and is called the Cadian Gate. Cadia was infinitely more dangerous, just by proximity to literal, actual, not metaphorical, Hell.
The Maelstrom the screaming vort the eye of terror and maybe some little warpers here and there and far distant regions of the Galaxy that they will probably flee to the galactic edges on probably the Halo Stars the veiled region in the galactic drop off
