In today’s questions episode we’re looking at the effects of competition shows on women’s fashion and future fashion brand companies, how to make friends in the industry, how to deal with the the insecurity of Paris Fashion Week season after season, and what separates fashion from other types of art and how to spring forward as an artform.

First season of NIF was so amazing with its global designers. Then the second season was all about young American designers who didn’t seem as fleshed out
I agree. I suspect there were some Covid restrictions in place when they were filming which restricted them to American designers.
This. The whole season I was trying to workout why it just wasn't as good. Then I noticed there was no one from os. What a waste of the ip. No one is going to trust a third season.
exactly daniel, minju and angel were amazing, now one has the same originality or style as them. I could tell from the beginning by the designers outfits.
I really cannot comprehend why Next In Fashion’s production team would conveniently send home a contestant right before their style fits a challenge. Gadoy being eliminated before the camp challenge, the very first elimination being completely unjustified. Why scout such good competition just to give them an unfair screen time, so lame
im verryy glad gadoy got eliminated, regardless of his skill, the kind of attitude and camaraderie he showed was disgusting. To be the only one in that challenge who was able to pick his team mate and then shit all over that same team mate claiming they're the reason why your look didnt work is such a lame escuse and made him look about 3 years old.
@@saulthompson1105 oh that’s surprising, I thought gadoy was just a bit salty knowing the bad critiques. Gadoy did point out the pizza bag was a bad idea and then the judges said they disliked it. I didn’t think they were gonna get eliminated that episode though to be fair

Next in fashions designers felt like they were grabbed from 2017. Plus the fabrics they had to work with were absolutely horrendous. You can feel how small the budget was for this season.

The concept of brands thinking they make the “perfect” pair of whatever is so silly. Despite 100s of brands that claim they make the “perfect pant” outside of Yohji & Rick nothing really ever fits because I have a combination of super long legs and massive thighs. Sizing / perfection varies so vastly based on the individual.
It just reminds me of oxymorons in fashion like brands being called a “sustainable brand.” When sustainability and fashion can’t come hand in hand because making more clothes is inherently unsustainable
by that definition is anything sustainable?
@@JafacaksWasTaken most things aren't, which is why using sustainability as a marketing tool is very deceptive and it happens a lot in fashion.

I feel that when brands state their sustainable ambitions, they really mean that they’re confident they’ll stay in business year after year, not actually environmentally sustainable
You can't be a 100% sustainable but as a fashion brand you can at least try to come close and not be unnecessarily wasteful with your products
Personally think Next In Fashion is really good for the most part. Some of the featured designers are ridiculously talented and create some mind blowing designs - Minju Kim is truly the goat. The show also has a lot less drama and conflict than other similar shows and focuses more on the positivity and camaraderie of the contestants. (Still mad they replaced Alexa Chung with Gigi tho).
The first season was so much better tho like i feel like it had sm more diversity to it. The second one had better guest stars but ig thats it :/

Due to the recent hatred of polyester, I kinda wondered why it was created. So, that was a fun fact! I also just learned that one reason why pajamas or children's clothes are made of polyester is because it's less of a burn hazard than cotton. It still will cause serious damaged if it melts onto your skin, but if you the child away from the heat source it stops burning, unlike cotton, and ir burns downward - avoiding the face. Love your channel
Polyester was born because we had ”unlimited” oil resources for super cheap. Companies wanted to make money so why not? Polyester is everywhere and made clothing dumbed down. Nowdays in thrift stores so many clothes are poly and I hate it. There is also the possibility that microplastics from washing poly clothes could be causing a big problem in oceans and maybe even in humans.
Quick added note: polyester is a fiber. And most fibers are broken down to either cellulose or non-cellulose. Such as cotton, hemp..all the way to nylon and acrylic. Fabric is material woven, knitted, bonded, or felted together. Poly twill, poly satin, and other methods of weaving with said fiber counts as fabric.
Your remark on bad energy people is great. Let's be benevolent/indulgent towards each other. If you're looking for a bad attitude in others, (this) your own toxic attitude will splash on the glasses you wear to look at others. Choose the kindness glasses, and suddenly everything changes.
Speaking of Next in Fashion, what the designers doing in the show is like a full marathon runner participating a 100m dash. They just have couple hours to create clothes unlike the real runways which takes a half year to prepare. So if you try to watch NIF, you have to think separately the Netflix drama from the real runway.
Its like all reality shows they are all scripted, fake and only made for drama. There are zero reality shows that are made with any purpose other than drama, that is why they are always scripted and edited to seem super dramatic.
I’ve hear a similar analogy about acrylic nails. As soon as you get them on you begin interacting with the world differently, and eventually those once foreign objects attached to your fingers almost become a new part of your body and you add them to your spacial awareness when moving about life
it’s interesting because as a fashion designer, i actually loveeeee next in fashion. it feels more authentic to my experience in the industry- the designers are kind, maybe introverted and a little eccentric. not pretentious at all, just in love with the craft. i love that the show isn’t drama and heavily focused on the craft lol and I love tan and gigi so much i think they’re so cute
I do not know how the word polyester became associated with the word perfect in fashion. In my experience working in the textile industry that there is just a lack of education in fabric and what is quality in terms of clothes from a consumer point level. Polyester is cheap to produce and can vaguely imitate a lot of fabrics hence why so much is manufactured in polyester. But I would never associate it with perfect clothes. Viscose and Elastine in fabrics are a good compromise if you love natural fibres with a beautiful drape. Plus bamboo is also a good alternative to silk and grows quickly which means it can be abundant as a resource making it affordable. If a luxury brand is using polyester you have to ask yourself why? Does it have function? For example holding a pleat better than silk would or is it a technical fabric that needs to be waterproof or create unique visual affect? If not you are probably paying an inflated price for something which is not a luxury item in the true sense.
Totally agree with this, it’s always felt like a weird callback to postwar hyper consumption and it being “the latest greatest” for the sake of it. It was mostly the novelty that made it special in the first place, now it doesn’t even carry the novelty so seeing it also without a purpose most of the time is 🥴
Well, I guess it all depends on who is using it and how. The CDG boiled polyester pieces are just beautiful and refined.
Talking about moving intentionally at 10:15 and I absolutely feel that!! When I wear heels, while with my current lifestyle I can only wear them out like once or twice a week, I feel uplifted with the shoe. I can feel my posture improve and that I move slower and more intentional with my actions, especially when going up stairs or having to bend down. The act of wearing heels for me is a choice that brings confidence and while many people will question the idea of uncomfortable foot wear, the shoe feels like an extension of what I want to express even if I am not able to realistically convey that form of myself everyday.

The word you’re looking for is “comportment”
I work in suiting and like many of your viewers, just love clothing in general and we will always get unsolicited comments from insecure people that talk about how they could never dress a certain way because it’s so unreasonably inconvenient in the modern world. So often, I would be getting a nervous groom or groomsman talking about how things never fit or how they’re uncomfortable that I injected a lot of education into my role and part of it was how one comports themselves in a suit.
I’m a diasporic Asian so having had access to and education of traditional garments also meant learning about comportment in garments that were not designed with modern added stretch for comfort or for modern life. Particularly when you get more formal garments, there is a lot that goes into wearing them and it’s in part why cultural appropriation is a problem. Certain clothing was never meant to be democratized yet the mentality has been that clothes are meant to serve the wearer and as you articulated so well, it’s rewarding when we accept that the clothes ask something of us and we accept that so there can be a symbiosis

Great British Sewing Bee - seek it out. There’s less drama, and more focus on the construction of garments. I learned a lot watching that show. And the judges are a Saville Row tailor and costume / clothing designer .

My biggest disappointment with the 2nd season of Next In Fashion is the winning designer, Nigel Xavier, has put out a collection, which is available for rental on Rent The Runway, that appears to only be offered in US sizes 0 to 10. During the show, in every challenge, there was a plus sized model for the designers to work with. I'm a US size 14 and was really looking forward to renting some of his collection after he won...oh well..

On that little Paris Flu, it's no joke because buyers who got covid during Milan fashion week (Italy was the first European country with covid) brought it in France during the Paris FW, which led to both country locking down right as PFW was ending (march 2020). Don't ask me how I know... I was designing in Italy, showed in Paris, and got back on an empty plane to discover what lockdown meant.

Just finished the second season of Next in Fashion and although the hosting and the storytelling can be cringe-worthy, the winning collection gave me goosebumps. So good, I think you might like some of the items too Bliss! I recommend watching the finale episode if you don't care about the rest of it. 😊
I agree. Next in fashion Szn 2 is lowkey good. I was even surprised that Nigel actually won. I feel like these shows are changing, there not like project runway anymore... less drama and more focos on the fashion it self...

The new season of next in fashion really has the worst "fashion" designers. Project runway haven't seen since maybe 2 seasons after Heidi left, but honestly some of the gimmicks that the runways have now I've seen before on older project runway competitions. The new Heidi Klum "making the cut" has some talented designers and has $1million prize heck yeah.

I bought a hoodie from one of the contestants on Making the Cut. Even though it's a size S it's so oversized I can comfortably wear a homburg with the hood up and not even come close to stretching it. This randomly popped up my feed and I decided to watch. I literally was staring hard to see if that was a real glass and then you put your legs on and confirmed it for me lol. But I remember I used to LOVEEE watching fashion design shows all the time when I wanted to be a Designer(still do but not the focus right now) and I always was confused on why they made it so "drama" when alot of designers and working in the room aren't like that at all lol.
And for the bad energy part, I agree to an extend, there are some people who generally are A holes and are rude. I'm naturally a welcoming person and I've been around people who get to shows thinking they are better than everyone else who is in the room. But like you said, I do offer grace and try to not let it get to me.

Great channel... you always tell it like it is. As somebody who worked in the fashion industry for 26+ years, I totally agree with what you said about those so-called 'reality' competition shows. Some are better than others, yes, but they all seem to be more 'reality show' than anything else, in the sense that they are more focused on hiring 'characters' for maximum drama than people who would really have a future in the industry. That's not to say there's no talent there, because some designers who compete are extremely talented, and do go on to do great things, but in the real world of fashion, nobody has the time or more importantly MONEY to waste on some drama queen. You have to deliver the goods with a minimum of fuss or you're out. Deadlines themselves are often insane and can be really stressful, so nobody needs the added stress that comes from unprofessionalism. It always made me laugh when the designers on PR said they can't work in teams or with other people when the inevitable team challenges popped up, (which was pretty much most of the contestants, from memory,) to which Michael Kors would say to them: 'If you can't work with people, then you can't work in the fashion industry.' You have to work with a HUGE array of different types of people to get anything done. That's of course, not to say that everyone is buddy-buddy with each other in some big love-in... but it's a BUSINESS. One that involves lots of money and very little time, so the stakes are always very high. Nobody wants to risk that on someone or something unstable, and when that DOES happen, we see the results. The 'tortured genius' is an outdated stereotype that some of these so-called (un)reality shows sometimes love to perpetuate.

I really enjoyed Next in Fashion, especially watching it with my son who is really into fashion. It was inspiring to see people with such talent, whip together these amazing designs. It also revealed that really probably half of the contestants were chosen because they had obnoxious personalities and would be controversial. They probably would not do well in any kind of team environment which is not just the fashion industry it's literally every industry.
I loved wearing those pants in 1982. They were over dyed chemical warfare pants I bought at Zap or some cool thrift store and used to wear them all the time, not only to break dance in.

seriously, I love your lectures, notes, reflections, you reconcile me with the fact that fashion sometimes seems superficial and tedious-consumer. mmm cultural studies i think
Things about clothes I liked in Project Runway ("liked" 'cause I watched a lot and I'm all set) best was the judges' critique. I learned a little about the industry, about tailoring, and who the contestants were ripping off - or paying homage to - when their work was derivative or inspired. The best part, by far, though, was when two judges argued whether a garment was ugly or beautiful, wearable or garbage. Loved that. In the end, all objective measures are beaten out by personal taste.
Speaking of Next in Fashion, I've binged the first season with my gf as it was pretty interesting (minus the cringe drama and me getting triggered at the judges taste and decisions), but the second season SO FAR has been absolutely cringe and I think I've stopped watching at like the third episode? Because they try SO HARD to find quirky looking people/personalities for their cast, it feels like they are intentionally trying to paint fashion as this cringeworthy space full of quirky people who tend to create drama everywhere they go and are so detached from reality that they have to be the center of attention AT ALL TIMES. It just doesn't really show fashion from a good side. Like I get that it's still a TV show but come on, fashion has come such a long way to the mainstream, let's not make it weird for everyone again...
i watched the whole season and i definitely noticed the overproduction but the cast was full of genuinely talented people, many of them could be considered quirky yes but it didn’t make their craft any less serious. The final episode is worth watching the whole season
@@faberquidam I will probably give it another shot but it definitely felt a lot more like "forced diversity" than the previous season and kind of felt a lot less serious.
I didn't think the cast was that quirky or that drama filled honestly. To me, the best part of the first season was the different perspectives we got from the different designers, and this season is also filled with different perspectives and people that have unique styles. I especially thought the drag queen designer was a great addition because of how epic drag fashion is, I'm glad they got that spotlight.

I was hoping you would mention the fashion show "the Hype" I think that it showed to all the other shows you've mentioned a more elevated concept of how those reality/fashion competitions can be done and also the designers were very interesting in my opinion.
I honestly think the first season of Next in Fashion was very drama filled but this season was amazing. i love watching it while I sew and it’s very inspiring! I love Tan and Gigi as hosts as well as Nigel and Amiri. It’s my jam and gets me excited about fashion 🤗
…don’t forget about the The Hype if you like fashion competition shows. As a big fan of the UK “friendly” competition shows like The Great British Bake Off and The Pottery Throw Down, I really dislike the negativity and drama that most US shows seem to want to cram down our throats, but the last season of First in Fashion felt refreshingly positive.

I'm not a fashionista or love fashion like that. But I am currently in season 2, episode 9 of Next In Fashion and I love the show. I didn't watch season 1 and for me it's just so nice seeing people so talented. The fact that they make clothes from scratch, in a few hours, it's just crazy to me. So, I really like the show. I love watching people who are talented in stuff that I'm not talented in.

I think that was a really profound statement about clothing not conforming to us but us conforming to clothes. The same could be said of high heels! They may not be one's first choice for comfort but they damn sure look good.

When they sent that woman home in the 2nd to the last episode that made that convertible dress that literally looked like it was magic, I knew the ending was going to suck. Of the 3 they had in the finale', I thought Bao had the best collection. Edit: The woman whose name I couldn't recall earlier is Amari. She deserves a shout out.
I often wear sunglasses in the shows. Usually the lights are so bright.
Changed my logo, to more reflect the way I want to be viewed in the world, but I have questions on this:
Where are places to get fabric dyes, if youre using a limited color palette like youd find in a Harry Potter or similar setting?
I cant seem to shake off being associated with Dark Academia, even though Im more of a Goth girl.
But I like to blend Cyberpunk and Dark Academia.
I know polyester isn’t environmentally friendly since it’s made out of plastic and oil but I love how it’s machine washable

Polyester was about washability and not ironing. Until you’ve had to iron a ten gore skirt and it’s petticoats you can’t truly appreciate polyester. In small doses.
Bliss! Fundamentally I agree with a lot of the point you make about synthetic fibres (polyester) and it’s relation to perfection. There is definitely beauty and somewhat of a healthy outlook on fashion when not expecting 100% perfection and uniformity.
As far as I know polyester constitutes to like 40% of the total fibre market in the whole world. So get rid of it would cause a deficit in the fibre market - we would not be able to meet the demand of clothes essentially.
While I agree that we should promote natural fibres, as of right now we can’t really grow them fast enough it to be able to sufficiently produce adequate volumes of garments it seems like…

Are synthetic fibres just plain BAD because of their environmental impact or is there benefits to the aswell?

Right now, I’m wearing shoes with synthetics, shorts made of poly, and a cap that’s completely synthetic (just got back from the gym). Synthetics have their place and there’s plenty of legit uses for them. But it does seem that there’s faaaar too much of it.

Congratulations to your brother!
I totally agree with what you said about being into adulthood and it being easier to make friends with people who are twice your age or older. I'm from Florida and I've worked with and been friends with people who old enough to be my grandparent, and called them by my first name. (Well, except Miss Tina, because I was only a few years out of high school, and her day job was at a high school, so it felt weird at that point to not use an honorific.)
ETA: And now I'm 39 and working with people 20 years older than me and with people 20 years younger than me. Adulthood is just adulthood until/unless you retire.

I loved project runway. Watching so many designers from different backgrounds come up with interesting looks was great. It did feel like they had far too little time to come up with anything good. Top much drama too.

I WANT those fashion design competition shows to be great - so I watch them religiously. Occasionally good, most often not. Still, I watch. When they aren't running, I watch Drag Race just for the clothes.
That's TV which really has nothing to do with fashion. If a tv show doesn't have drama its not successful. Period.
