Everything Wrong With Next in Fashion (who allowed tan france to be a judge?)

- Netflix's Next in Fashion is a reality fashion design competition show that explores 18 fashion designers from all around the world competing to create clothing and collections to appease the show's judges. Tan France and Alexa Chung host and judge the show, but it's not all it's cracked up to be, although the designers that compete make it all worth it.

I have a problem with these shows. Putting someone to create a gown or two looks in less than 24 hours shows more time management skills than actual design talent.
It's probably a lie anyways. In reality they often get more time than is said on the show. It's supposed to create a more intense atmosphere, I guess. At least I heard about this being the case on project runway.
Yes! Why cant we get a quality show that allows for at least 7 days. Imagine the designs honey !!
If it’s anything like ink master, the tattoo show, they actually get waaay more time than that and just tell the audience is only 8h/24h/whatever
Judging by the way baking shows are set up, the designers probably have an idea of the theme in advance and come up with designs before the episode is shot
Lol it actually is a lie. One of the designers on the show is actually my teacher rn and she told us that they actually have people work on the garments when the “day is done” and they have to go home. Half the work is done by someone behind the scenes to be able to have garments to show bc it’s literally impossible to make quality work like that within a day or 2 (even with teams)
I wasnt a fan on how some pairings knew eachother/were friends and some met on the show. Since they were clearly judged on how they work together in the early challenges some parings had an obvious advantage .
Ya, that was a glaring issue but overall the top 2 designers made sense. I hope they address this next season though!
exactly ..... it was super unfair for some of them ... especially for the indian and the military guy
Yeah that is a big problem that must be addressed if there's a second season. At least give those pairings an opportunity to rotate or something.
dont they get to choose their partners though? I thought it was similar to that netflix cooking show 'the final table', where they can either choose a partner before they go on (pros = you know them and work well together, cons = you have to be able to beat them at the end) or meet a random partner there (pros = you have a better chance of being better then them and eliminating them, cons = you dont know how well you work together) and then some partners chose their partner before but have only cooked with them one or two times and some partners have been cooking with their partners for years. So if it's their choice, it's not really a problem to 'fix'
I agree super unfair
the thing is, Farai and Kiki’s points about the fashion industry and black designers were very accurate.... but their own designs weren’t the best.
Agreed
John Edwards come ooooonn, we are all different people with different ideas, talents and assets. You’re talking about a huge group of people here. Not liking certain designers has nothing to do with color
@John Edwards wrong
John Edwards black women have pioneered fashion trends since forever so your comment about black women being terrible at fashion is incorrect. just in this case, their designs weren't great.
Regardless of race I think they should have gone home at episode 3. They don't produce bad stuff all the time, but the output of the other teams were just so good.
I felt so bad for Charles. He just wanted to start his own brand with the price money and his technical skills were one of the best on the show and it broke my heart when he had to leave
Ekatarina* yes ikr!!! i was heartbroken 😭
ugh same he was such a great designer and the one who needed the win the most
Ekatarina* he doesnt even post anything fashion its all gym stuff on his social media, so he basically gave up because he lost Angelo was more abt Fashion, Charles couldve been the Best based on his Early Career(age 5) and his Red Carpet Dress w Angelo in the beginning it was like one of the best designs i ever seen but he didnt try his hardest after angelo left
@@duechbaggerful3075 he has a separate fashion instagram although it has a very similar name. I am sure he is very serious about it but your just looking at the wrong account.
Yes
This is really random but I think all competition shows like this shouldn't eliminate people every episode. Like, surely it would be better if you kept everyone there til the end so they all did every single challenge and then you judge their performance throughout the entire season?? Wouldn't that give a better picture of their talents? I mean I know these shows are about getting viewership and not actually rewarding the most talented or skilled but a girl can hope
I ALWAYS SAY THIS
This is how I actually think all reality TV competition shows should work!
Thats true, they would have to find new ways to create drama which would be cool
Ya like adding system would work better for that! Like every week they give them points on their designs in different criterias and at the end of the show they calculate their total points
I think there was an european show that was just like that, it was a point based system, and people would only be sent home in some challenges.
I appreciated how it was way less thirsty for drama than Project Runway, I get bored when all the contestants fight over petty bullshit
I agree!
Nearly Anonymous Grace definitely!! i stopped watching project runway cuz i was so bored of the drama
I actually like the drama. To me project runway is way better and the designers are more talented.
I know right, they all loved each other, it was adorable
Yes I like how everyone was very respectful with each other, it made me want to watch it till the end!
When I saw Minju's finale looks I literally teared up. It really showed her own perspective as well as growth. Also it was so clearly a woman's designs and showcased feminine beauty from a female perspective and it made all the difference for me.
Omg I cried too! It was so beautiful and pure.
@emma really? Would you use one of that designs?
Iliana Ruiz ; the wedding dress is iconic
@@pi2sa yes, definitely. I loved several of them, especially the pink one. They were so powerful.
@@strayfreckles agreed. Additionally with the fact that she was inspired by Frida Kahlo, that added so much more meaning and made it even more beautiful.
I feel like instead of elimination they should do a point system. Like everyone does every challenge, at the end, the two with the most points get to make a collection.
Naw I don't want to see everybody's work it would get old quickly but that's just my opinion
Sounds good but I think people may end up having too little points at the end and just being there for nothing because they're already not gonna make the cut in the last few episodes
PK Paulina unless they didn’t know their scores? That way they’d still give it their all for every challenge. Like, the judges and audience would know them, but no need for the contestants to.
@@nataliebeaumont yeah what I meant is they should give them a chance to go beyond the very first challenge. Kinda like beauty peagents, where they cut contestants half way through, and then narrow it down even more at the end. That way they could judge them individually also. I felt like the format as it is is VERY unfair, and some of the best ones went home very early on, which made it less exciting to watch.
but at the end of the day this is a show. You keed to have that anxious moment at the end "will my favorite stay???" If the episodes ended with a score it would feel boring
My favorite part was when one of the contestants suffered an injury on set and the staff were just like “Okay well heal quickly because you’re abandoning your teammate!”
Its Netflix, lol. Netflix was founded by Edward Bernays grandson, and they use his grandfather's propaganda techniques to get people to watch, not that every other channel doesn't do the same thing, but they do it with zero budget.
Samuel Miriello I like when his friend said we are not continuing while he is bleeding. That was a good friend😁
Fr and then ashton just had to do everything alone, like they at least could’ve given him an extra hour or sum???
Regarding the bra point: I never wear a bra with an underwire and specifically look for bras without one. I also hate bras with a lot of padding, so I look for unpadded bras as well. Not saying that everyone does that, but just because a bra lacks an underwire doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a place in the market.
Same. Hate the underwire.
I totally agree. I think it’s really comical that MEN feel entitled to pass judgement on how a “proper” bra should be constructed. In reality, I think that the judges thought the design was lacking and just blamed it on the construction because they weren’t brave enough to critique her design after she played the race card in the previous episode.
That's true, I myself also tend to get sport bras or bras without wires because my skin is also very sensitive. However it is true that in some cases it is just needed, like my mother who needs it because of her huge size, and without it, it would makes her back hurt more. And the style of bra they made seemed to call for an underwire, so it really depends on the situation
Sara Tal same and I’m a bigger girl too. The wire is uncomfy and padding looks silly on me
specially since someone that got surgery done can't wear underwire bras at all! imagine the size of the market for that
I feel two designers suffered due to their team partners, Narresh(eliminated due to Lorena's personal taste) and Julian(eliminated due to the friction with Hailey and the subdued-bold disconnect.)
True
Totally agree. I think pairing for the entire 1st season robbed a couple of designers. I see the 2nd season was different but that’s a little too late as there isn’t a do over for the 1st season.
Narresh is a really good high end designer in India
Bro, I am from India haha@@truthh8597 :)
Thank you for giving Alexa Chung justice! She’s not just some random person netflix hired! She was a former it-girl turned new designer with a British Vogue “business of fashion” series. She knows what’s she’s talking about.
I was sad because Daniel didn't win, but also happy because Minju won. If both had won i would be in the clouds lol
João Rodrigues same
Same! I was rooting so hard for both.
Minju was my favourite from the start, but that silver rock outfit was atrocious.
Super agreed
Minju designs was trash compare to Daniel. Daniel did both women and men designs as opposed to the same oversized crap minju kept making. Daniel got robbed!
Being called “too LA” pissed me off so much. So every other designer on the show could express their cultural background in their designs, but the LA guys couldn’t? It didn’t seem fair
I really liked their design style. I’m not from LA so I found it sexy and interesting. I didn’t understand why they were in the bottom.
Honestly this infuriated me because their designs were great and wearable and it had great construction. The judges opinions and decisions were so subjective and biased, even Elizabeth said like "angel and minjus fashion is loose/flowy which i like" but evey every episode they seemed to give the same unwearable outfit, but due to it being different from what the judges were used to, it won
Ive been screaming this the entire timeeeeee 😭
even the difference between TOO LA and SOOOOO NY
Ugh that part pissed me offff. Sure it isn’t cultural in the traditional sense, but it IS culturally based off LA’s fashion scene. I loved the designs
It was very clear from the beginning that Daniel w Fletcher, angel chen and Minju Kim were the standouts. They have the most established recognized high end labels and they have great skills, taste and refinement. I do think the overall format of the show is strong despite the host flaws and a couple of other road bumps. I like how straightforward the challenges are.
i rooted from the beginning for Angelo and Charles, and after the split for Charles alone. I get frustrated because the judges maybe considered him boring and too classic but I love the perfection of his lines and his elegance
That's the thing though, Charles wasn't pushing enough. His clothes were tailored and designed BEAUTIFULLY, but they didn't push forward. The only time I remember having a "wow" moment was during the Streetwear challenge. Other than that, I understood why they let him go. Specially when compared to the other designers. That being said, he'd probably win Project Runway had he gone there instead.
i completely agree and also rooted for them
Charles’ construction was truly magnificent but his eveningwear was totally mother of the bride. His street wear was inspired though.
They prefer potato sacs style. Horrify taste
I adored minju and angel 💕💥
wait, a youtuber I love watches another youtuber I love!!!!
@@thulani5764 I mean yeah they can’t watch there own videos all day
I watch both you and him, I love your videos!
Same but there outfits really were smth else.
OMG,me too!
Loved the show. People were not demeaning and pissy with each other. Instead they were supportive and it was refreshing in this world. Plus most of the designers were quite incredible. When Daniels collection came out it was beautifully done but once Minju’s pieces came out I quickly forgot Daniels because her work has such a fresh look. It was clear they were on par with each other and it was close competition.
Fully agree!! I binged it and it made me feel good the whole time since every contestant were so wholesome and supportive. I hope they don't amplify drama for the next season.
Same, they were neck in neck, but overall Minju had a better "story" and proved herself more in the finale IMO.
Same they even helped each others on semi final and even in final..they all were so supportive of each other❤️🥺
Daniel and Minju have also gone on to have very successful careers after the show which i thought was amazing
I was shook when Kerby Jean-Raymond from Pyer Moss showed up. He certainly is innovative. He was calling out other famous design brands by name that they copy him. That had me rolling!!
I was dying during that part!!
That was one of my favorite moments of the whole season
I was yelling at my tv and my husband then he he spoke up. What a man! That took guts. Proud of him for speaking out.
Exactly!!! What was the point of inviting Kirby if tan and Alexa are going to disagree on his expertise. Tan and Alexa for sure wouldn’t be caught dead in pyer moss but would wear the copies at Louis Vuitton.
Loved it
I actually, unlike everyone else it seems, really liked Tan and Alexa. I thought they made the atmosphere of the show way more relaxed. There was less tension and they really seemed to care about the contestants, especially Tan. I didn't always agree with them - but I felt they were way more transparent about eliminations than Project Runway ever was. I don't think Tan looked bad in his outfits, some of them were questionable, but certainly not boring. I hope they both come back next season. I thought the show was really inspiring.
I enjoyed Tan and Alexa as well, found them charming.
I hope they won't come back. Their comments are very superficial
I loved them together, if you watch any of their interviews you see their genuinely great chemistry, I binged watched all their interviews in day they were so cute. Also I think some of the hate is from an American audience that don't really understand that British humour and dynamic they had
@@anniemendonca108 i don't hate the humor. But their critiques are bias to western and white culture. Bcs fashion is not always about high-end or avant-garde
vicky christian fair enough i agree I just love them both
I feel like the judging could have been more consistent too. One episode the designers were critiqued for their designs being "too ready-to-wear" and the next episode they were critiqued for being "not ready-to-wear enough". Set those expectations in the premise of the challenges!
FRRRRR
Amen !!!!
That’s so important. You can’t win a game if you don’t know what the rules are
This.
THIS. I am halfway through season 1 and I felt like the goal post from the beginning of the challenge moved greatly by the time judging arrived.
The cast of designers was definitely the highlight
Tons of bras don’t have underwire, I don’t own any with them, and that doesn’t mean all of them are unstructured
There are plenty of other ways to create structure in a piece of clothing that don't involve repeatedly stabbing yourself in the side-boob with a borderline useless strip of bent metal. Darts, starching, stretch fabrics, interfacing... Literally anything other than two daggers would be wonderful.
I don't wear wire bras (because my mum was against them back when I was 13 and I just carried that habbit) the structure is there and it is mostly formed by the straps imo
None of the judges had big boob problems enough to understand how brilliant it was to build a support that wasn’t metal. The girls were supported and looked good in what she had them in. I didn’t think the shirt looked as great, but I didn’t think it was the worse. Had they been the the bottom a few times? Yes. Did I think they should have been? No. I thought they had the most wearable designs. Most of their clothes could be sold to anyone and worn by anyone. I also liked their choice of patten and color on the suit. I’d look great in that suit.
cheree teasley what are you talking about? The girls were supported? They were not, they looked terrible. I wear a 38d I know what I'm talking about. With big breasts you need better support. It was a lame work and really tacky, too.
i agree but even if farai and kiki added the wires the design is still weak
While Next in Fashion definitely has its issues, I think it totally tops Project Runway. I like the fact that the majority of the designers actually have some sort of industry experience or established brand. MarcoMarco is very well known in the queer community, Daniel Fletcher does menswear for Fiorucci, Angel Chen was included in BoF 500, etc. My biggest problem with Project Runway is that sometimes contestants seem kinda amateur, like they don’t have the skills to do anything with the exposure the show offers.
Yessss sadly I think that most people don’t prefer actually seeing good outfits and learning like in next in fashion and just want drama like in project runway
I disagree. I feel like they’re two different shows focused on a different level of expertise. Project Runway is the equivalent to the show Master Chef which focuses on amateur home cooks and NF is equivalent to Hell’s Kitchen which focuses on chefs with experience.
Also Tan literally had some of the most roastable outfits through the duration of the show, I will never take style advise from someone wearing Jesus sandals and a blazer together
there's something always OFF about his outfits and he doesn't have much in the hosting department as well
Job Jacinto I agree, I found his hosting kinda boring but more cringe than anything. And don’t even get me started on those little segments throughout the show with him and the other host lady who was equally as snooze worthy 😭
@@TwinsiesFunniness At least The girl host was a tad more interesting/had better critiques compared to Tan. Tan's critiques literally make me go ???. And I agree his segments were super cringe
Honestly where is the lie? I was so confused.
When the lady host wore that hideous pink top during the street wear episode.. I almost threw up
i loved the fact that minju won despite daniel’s collection probably being more commercial and profitable for net-a-porter to sell on their website
lilith greta I had a feeling that Net a Porter was looking for someone different, ‘next in fashion’, Daniels collection although nice, feels like it’s been done before
I agree, she is so passionate about her work. I truly fell in love with her but still love Daniel's work wish he made women's wear (even though I can't afford it 👀)
Becca in Korea yes, but I don’t think that look is common on NaP? I don’t know. her actual collection on the site is more mature looking than her final runway
Actually if you look at the website they really toned down her collection and only sell the more commercial looking items
I enjoyed a lot the designers, but I was disappointed with the production of the show: lack of explanation of how the pairs were made, then suddenly splitting them up at a weird point of the competition, very little argumentation behind the choice of elimination, lack of materials (see Ashton for example) and those dangerous bars falling in the stock (which was an unfortunate accident, but still! Marco could have lost an eye with the damn thing!)
Minju was unbelievable. the kindest person ever, and a BREATHTAKING designer. My jaw dropped when I saw that wedding dress
I think this show was “watchable“ compared to project runway and I really liked most of the designers I actually really liked it but completely agree with the negative aspects you mentioned during this video
Project runway is boring boring boring
David Gonzalez Project Runway was good. But after Heidi left it’s pretty shit
@@DavidGonzalez-wp4wg the designs looks so cheap in PR compared to the ones in next in fashion
I wish the designers work alone and not in teams. Some people are talented and were eliminated when it wasn't their fault
Project runway is full of dramas, fights and arguements! Period.
Plus they do this thing where they try to imagine celebrities wearing the designs. Which is a very stylist’s way of looking at things rather than judging the creativity of the outfit
OMG, YES
it was so cringy, like, is fashion really all about celebrities and the hype now?
I liked having the multiple perspectives. Does this look good walking down the runway? Would someone wear it on the red carpet? Would an average person buy it? Fashion is an art and a business and I am interested in both aspects.
BelieveInMyDaydreams ya that’s true. But like you don’t make trends for actors, actors follow trends. When Ralph Lauren used to make clothes his muse was his wife. Imagine if someone said “I don’t see this dress having a Chrissy tiegen moment”
BelieveInMyDaydreams I’m all for having multiple perspectives for every outfit but then does tan france’s opinion really count for high validation?
The cherry on top was in the finale with the Instagram lady "Oh my lord It'S SuCh An InStAgRaM mOmEnt AnD ThAtS WuT MaTtErS tHe MoSt!!" honey no it's not I remember more looks on runways or editorials than ones in Instagram because integram it's just a "moment" and those adorable kittens right after will make my heart melt and forget all about it.
As a black woman from NY, Kiki's designs and execution was awful every week. She should've left, period. Them using the black card that week was disappointing to see. They just sucked.
Anna Banana I mean you’re not a designer lol, that whole ‘as a black woman’ is so unnecessary... who cares.
Also disappointing to see a black woman use phrases like ‘the black card’ like are u okay? Ignorant people use those phrases whenever a black person complains about literally anything.
Thank You. An honest opinion at least. Most of their designs were pretty bad and that bra was terrible. No support at all. The model's chest looked horrible and they were trying to justify everything with the race card. Lame.
runchranda xo they were treated differently just because of that. The judge running away like a 10 years old kid. Wtf.
nenek75 fuck off with the ‘race card’. Literally no one will take u seriously if u say bullshit like that. I don’t know if u noticed but I didn’t say anything about their designs, I was replying to OP’s comment specifically.
nenek75 it’s a tv show, the producers definitely hyped that shit up more for views.
I think Julien, the military guy, had some real talent and the partner system really worked against his advantage... wish they had eliminated 2 individuals every week instead of strictly teams. Same for the guy who did prints, cant believe his partner didnt let him design a print when he specializes in them and it was a damn print challenge...
Yeah I was so pissed at her he repeatedly said prints is my thing and she didn't let him use it
Who was this print guy and her partner
In conclusion, far better designs than project runway
Ethan Davies agreed . these are established designers. PR had new upcoming designers
Not always. Have you watched the new seasons of Project runway with Karlie Kloss? I mean Sebastian Grey, Geoffrey Mac, Sergio Guadarrama and Garo Sparo have been working in the indrustry for years and they have created pieces for Lady Gaga, Madonna, Rupaul, etc.
I wished they made more unconventional decisions rather than just blanket eliminating 2 people every episode. Like, if someone was just bad because of the group they were in, they should have either been put in another group or been allowed to work alone for just one look. I feel like they were assessing team work and time management more than design ability a lot of the time.
exactly my thoughts
Can we talk about the moment in the last episode when Daniel helped Minju fix the final dress problem with releasing the veil? it was so wholesome and charming, that druing the show they got so close and could help each other despite trying to win the show.
3:39 tan France actually ran his own fashion line back in the UK, and comes from a family that ran a denim factory. His grandfather taught him how to sew a jacket from scratch by the age of 12. Just because this was in Europe, it still counts.
But he didn’t show any of his knowledge in the show so what good is it?
@@jaspalmuman9444 You're 100% right. 'i don't really feel this' isn't a good enough reason to send someone packing for home.
So he sewed a jacket now he's capable to decide a fashion designer's future, Tan France knows what clothing looks good but he doesnt know shit about fashion
yeah, he created multiple fashion brands on his own and was successful enough as a designer for those that he was able to retire at age 33. i don't love him but it annoys me how luke basically admitted he hadn't researched where tan worked and then judged him on working for zara (literally just after he graduated from college!)
That explains his classist remarks he makes as a joke. Whatever. Standards for entertainment continue to fall. The designers are CONSISTENTLY amazing.
minju deserved the win!!! her aesthetic is so unique and you you can clearly see her vision
@Becca i guess that it isn't something that i've seen on runways at events such as fashion week
I love her pieces but I agree she’s not that unique. Many of the Scandinavian brands are doing this style lately
I agree, her designs were so refreshing!
Becca just because everyone is doing oversized doesn’t mean she’s NOT unique. She knows how to play with aesthetics where it’s super scalable. A lot of people design oversized but it’s not wearable for commercial consumers. The way she does it gives it a sense of simplicity with an edge. Just my opinion
Becca aesthetic and design are two different things. The aesthetic has to be scalable to be able to have an audience. If not, you’re just designing for yourself and not profit.
The team aspect was introduced in a very confusing way. I would have liked to know how the teams were decided. Did the designers pick their own partners, or were they assigned partners? It just seemed like an afterthought... “oh and by the way teams are a thing too lol”
Allison Villeneuve It seemed like a different plan was supposed to be implemented - maybe switching up teams each week. And executives or lawyers got involved last-minute and switched it to permanent teams selected for visuals, not style match. Or perhaps it was supposed to be teams vs. individuals and that got scrapped late.
The team thing really bothered me, because I couldn't understand why some were friends, business partners and college buddies, but others seemed to have just met there and were forced together.
Right, I thought I'm watching it from season 2 or something
One thing I loved about the show was the relationships between the designers especially moving closer to the end of the show.
they should’ve mixed the pairs up each week! it wasn’t fair how some knew each other and some had only just met. i think seeing people with very contrasting styles work together would be much better than how they did it
Btw minju closing look took my breath away and made me shed a tear
Actually same!! I didn’t realize my eyes teared up a little.
Becca Why do you feel the need to comment something combative on every Minju post? It’s honestly pathetic.
@@plainezaine5065 girl, almost every compliment comment here in this video about Minju, she literally replied hate comments
Becca hater
One good thing about this show- I can’t stop speaking in an Italian accent and calling everyone my babies
i loved him so much ahahaha
It was refreshing to see that the focus was mostly on design and skill and not about snarky comments on fellow designers.
I don't think it was fair that people were sent home in teams especially when it was clear that it was one person being overbearing and took over the whole outfit and caused the loss
I know - that happened 3 episodes in a row. Where one person in the pair sabotaged the other.
Same for Ashton and Marco i was so rooting for them! I so felt like they needed to stay longer. They had the most appealing designs to me everytime
ASMR Glow love ya and didn’t expect your comment on here but I agree. Season 2 definitely needs more structure within the judging
Ashton should’ve won that denim design into the grand finale😭
Same were always my fav outfit
Ok but thanks to this show I got to know about Angel and Minju, so it's a win for me.
Minju, Angel, and Daniel were by far my favorites. So glad to see them getting the exposure and attention they deserve!
Tan had his own business!!!
he explained it in his book!
as soon as i watched Next in Fashion, i wanted Luke to review it so badly omg im so happy
Haha same 😂
Luke, I was wondering of a video idea. You always emphasize how small fashion brands are amazing and being conscious of that is truly a privilege and you even list some in your videos. But I was wondering if you can make a full detailed video based on these brands or/and different resources we viewers can use to find these brands. Typing this right now made me realize how difficult this is and probably wouldn't get as many views, but it would be a great help for me !!! btw I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS, and your one of the best white people we got :)
Oooh! Etsy designers would be cool! You can find lots of amazing handmade clothes on there.
Why was that last sentence even necessary ? Stop making everything about race
@@ninabeckham1596 Nah, they're right and they should say it. Did you comment "Why are you making everything about race?" When Luke pointed out the bits about streetwear in the video?
wtf was that last comment? "one of the best white people we got" wtf is that even supposed to mean?
@Dark Glow theres over 2 million sellers on etsy lol, i buy clothes on there all the time and there are some super talented designers/seamstresses on there.. Plus a lot of them are more geared to sustainable practices.
tan has worked really hard, from being a marginalised conservative muslim family in the uk and he's now a global star, he started designing and constructing clothes at age thirteen, worked in factories, and studied at design college after finishing school, he is now in his 40s, having worked with fashion all this time. he has a lifetime of experience that you have no idea of, you're judging him simply on the fame he has found later in life. seriously this video is so uncomfortably salty.
He's not a big name in fashion outside of his TV personality on Queer Eye, if he didn't have that (and it weren't on Netflix) do you really think he'd have gotten the hosting gig?
also i can't believe the cheek from someone who has no experience in the industry and makes videos critiquing top designers
thank you, joseph! like, people who imply that 'having a big name' is the only way to prove you have a grasp on what fashion is, are the same people who think vuitton bags and gucci shoes are the peak of design just bc of how famous they are. yikes.
and i just skipped around the salty rant at the beginning bc i didnt agree and it wasn't even funny enough to soak in it, but whatever, yknow, i can still enjoy the rest of the video! but then he circled BACK to tan and it's like. oh dear, oh dear. to call a woman with chinese roots and the worker class man with pakistani roots too white? ...a moment.
Thank youuuuuu
I actually enjoyed tan's critique on the garments. He did a great job hosting the show. And I agree, luke was very rude in this video. He acts like he is a fashion icon
I Googled Tan France and he did own 3 fashion businesses that he sold when he started working for Netflix according to Wikipedia at least.
There are also articles on Wikipedia and sources with interviews he made about his business years ago. I also happen to own his memoir and it's all detailed. I don't why people act tone deaf.
C M problem when you tubers actually don’t do their research and state opinions instead of facts. The audience will trust the CZcamsr and continue their ignorance while battling in the comments. It’s annoying to say the least.
@@ladyrias5183 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 couldn't agree more. The take as holy water words out of you a CZcamsr instead of searching stuff themselves. I mean Wikipedia is the first pop up result for anyone . And yet. It's tiresome.

The chemistry between top6 contestants was so heart warming
The reason why I much preferred it compared to Project Runway is that the designers are simply much more skilled.
I loved that show because there was no fucking drama.
actually minju is now a rising designer and it’s really great how this show’s changed her career as a designer
Omg I just finished watching the video and I have so many thoughts. As someone who is interested in fashion but literally has NO background in fashion whatsoever, I wanted to hear your opinions!! First I’m HOWLING over the fact that you didn’t like tan as a judge. Honestly I thought Alexa and tan were judges because it would get more people to watch, not because of their fashion backgrounds. Next I love what you said about Kiki and farei and the streetwear. I felt lowkey uncomfortable with the judging of that episode even though I knew kiki and farei definitely needed to go home soon because they were just not meeting the standards for a few episodes. Also I’m a big harry styles fan and I recognized Daniel IMMEDIATELY from day one because harry wore one of his designs several years ago and totally thought he was gonna win the entire thing. I did fall in love with dragon princess though and loved minju’s designs so I was happy with the final two and minju winning. Also loved angelo’s quotes. He was so funny. My underdogs were Marco and Ashton. I hated too when they were called costumey. All in all great show and I learn A LOT about the technicalities of fashion through the amazing designers.
If the English accent is important to them they could've cast Gok Wan, he at least has many years experience presenting fashion TV programmes
I haven't seen him on TV for a while but he is pretty great. Is he recognisable in the US though?? I think Netflix care about that more, and as Luke said they prefer to keep people who are 'Netflix famous' in multiple shows.
@@DiabolicalPaperClip He's been doing some really amazing work for say yes to the dress uk recently
Alexa and Gok would’ve been so good!
I'm back here in March 2023 after having sat through the TRAINWRECK of season 2, waiting patiently to be validated by you : )
Luke ignoring the fact that Alexa has a fashion brand for 23 minutes
I mean.........she was a model first, a lot of models get their own brand but I wouldn't exactly considering them fashion designers just cause the game is rigged in their favor already
So what. Just because she is a designer, doesn't mean she's a great designer. Are we seeing her clothes in milan?
Same with tan's work before he came to the US!!
He mentioned it though?

I do think that even if many factors could have been improved, in the end, the finalists, as well as the winner- made sense.
Tan France is a stylist... which does not mean he’s a fashion expert.
He's a fashion designer. Look Wikipedia up . He works in the industry since he graduated fashion college. He's not a stylist. He styles people on queer eye. He was the owner and designer of his own brands.
@@cm7277 that have gone nowhere. All the judges bar Alexa were poor choices.
@@dva5610 gone nowhere what? He sold his brands when they became successful because he wanted to retire to live more quietly. they were later purchased by forever 21, modlcloth etc. Displayed there . Clothes you will see there were designed by Him. And They shipped all over. And all the judges are big names in terms of social exposure and celebrity connection so it was a good mix.
C M like Luke said, all the judges were trash choices. ty, next. He’s only worth 3 million dollars and his ‘brand’ is only available in 3 countries 😂
@@dva5610 I think you misunderstood. That was the site of his brand. I'm telling when he was working on it his clothes were purchased by F21 Etc. Clothes you would see on the site were made By Tan France. And F21 shipped ALL OVER. That's the part you didn't get. Plus hes worth more than 3 millions. That's just one of his companies. Plus with all the work he's doing now? Do you realize the influence all these people have?
Tan did have his own brands though
I loved the show because all the contestants had such a family like dynamic. No nasty competitive nature. They were all so happy for each other even when they lost. Positive vibes and Alexa and Tan both were very kind and constructive instead of nasty like most contestant judges
The show was amazing..cant wait for season 2
a VERY poor man’s Tim Gunn...Oooh the shade 😆😂
Miss me with that 'fashion blogger' start. You couldn't have bothered him looking up?? He owned three companies . One was called Kingdom and State. He also was partner with Rachel Parcell. He did modest clothing . He started in the UK where he studied fashion and got his expertise by working for brands before making his owns . That's belittling him. And also the point of the show is to be lighter and more watchable for people that may not know a shitload about fashion. It's Netflix FIRST competition show. And the company said the scope was to make it like British production so if could have been more 'goood heart and soul tv' instead of rip apart catty shows.
interesting you said the company wanted it more British style, thats exactly how I felt when I watched it I was like wow netflix almost just made the Great British Bake Off of fashion with cringy lovable judges and all
I'd love to see a video like this on season 2 of this show
Not sure if I should take fashion advice from someone who thinks that style of facial hair is okay
ahhahhahah
lmaoo
I was wanting Daniel to win all through the competition, he came across as a very genuinely nice person on the show and made a number of clothes I would love to wear. His design is not a million miles away from the clothes I tend to go for personally. I am definitely considering buying something from his brand, the denim jackets he wore quite a lot in the show are very me, and I love the emphasis on sustainability and that the clothes would be made pretty close to where I live as I live in London. (though if Luke sees this please tell Daniel to add a size guide to his website! And I don’t know where to go to try any of it on).
However when it came to the final, though Daniel did really well, for me Minju was the clear winner, that wedding dress was amazing. I think if they had more time perhaps Daniel would have incorporated more of the tailoring aspects he had shown before (that trench coat he made was great, I would buy that) and then it might have been a tougher call. She was so ambitious and it paid off.
I completely agree that Tan was out of place. He’s good on Queer Eye but this is different.
But Tan set up his own company from scratch. He does know about design! He started with swimsuits. He designed and made all of the clothes in his lines until he was able to outsource the work to China and he’s had lines that sold out within hours! His husband did all the packing and sending to customers himself in their apartment. Just because he came at it from a commercial standpoint doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what he’s doing!
He didnt really show much of his knoledge on the show honestly...
Yeah but look at what he wears throughout the show….nuff sed
If you produce five items, it can be sold out in hours as well. "Sold out" is not a legally protected term for at least 500.000 items sold or something. I dunno if you can live off of a collection that fits into your appartment, but who knows how big the appartment was, right 😂. It's a completely different thing managing a huge firm with marketing people, sewing staff, an HR department etc etc or making a few clothes. I don't hate him, he's a very nice person and I don't think he's horribly dressed and I dont know what he made back then, but if he's extremely knowledgeable, it didn't display on the show. Also, I think most outfits on queer eye from the other four were mostly better than his, and that's kind of...dissapointing from someone who is supposed to judge established designers with their own brands and memorable looks which of them is next in fashion. He might have done some good work in the past, but he isn't next in fashion. So get someone who is. He could have been the moderator and the guest judges the sole judges. He's no Hilfiger, why not let Hilfiger decide and make it clear he decides (which I'm sure he did).
Am I the only who noticed that every time someone said that the challenge was easy for them they end up to get eliminated? The prime example is the guy who had a pattern fabrics business and got eliminated during the pattern challenge
Edit : just got to the part of the video, glad I wasn't the only one to notice
His partner really brought him down. But part of having a successful business is knowing when to say no to your partner.
“Who allowed tan France to be a judge” my thoughts exactly. He really doesn’t seem to know much about fashion which is more evident when you watch/read some of the promotion he did for the show
I think he watches Tom Ford videos on GQ, because his makeovers all use basic Tom Ford elements. Mix black, gray, white neutrals with some shade of brown. Add a texture. It was revolutionary 25 yrs ago because it makes basic black dramatic when it was more associated more with youth culture.
I think a fashion designer that worked for major brands and worked successfully as designer and owner of his brands for over a decade and Netflix himself for hiring know a lot more than us people on the internet.
@@kh5709 His business ventures have been making knock offs for fast fashion. We aren't talking Christian Siriano II, boo.
@@Gee-xb7rt what knock off? He was the first one to create women modest clothing especially swimwear for Mormon women. And sure he's not Christian Siriano but he's still a qualified man for the job. That's what I am saying .
@@kh5709 he worked at Zara and Forever 21 making knockoffs, destroying the planet one knockoff at time.
If any of you bothered looking Tan up you would have seen he's not a stylist but a fashion designer himself. He doesn't have "little experience" he went to fashion college, worked right away for major retail brands and then build three companies. Managed to retire successfully at 32 because he made THAT much money . He worked his aff. He's in this by years. Plus he wasn't even judging alone. It was a team of 4 judges each episode.
Thank you! Finally someone says it. I've been looking for this comment. I'm actually very surprised by this negativity against him here in the comments. Although, I agree that the judges weren't the best in this show and made sometimes a bit questionable decisions. We have to consider, that it is a TV show with editing, where only part of the critique is shown. So everyone: please criticize with substance behind your arguments. It makes it much more believable ;)
@@malefiz7910 I mean, everyone kept saying 'he shouldn't judge just because he's on queer eye" but WHAT DO YOU THINK HE WAS DOING BEFORE? so you think he was employed ? Worked in skin care?? Lmao literally all they need to do was Google him up and they would have avoided the embarrassment. Plus judging every single TV production...I mean. Bit much?? Let people live. Unlike project runaway they are not unknown designers. the money is appealing to anyone clearly. But they all have their brands so it's not like by sending them home they were doing major damage. The point was to not judge them too harshly so the concept could have been more uplifting unlike other shows ~ so that's also why criticism is more mellow
@@cm7277 Exactly! But for some people, only what they see on TV or social media is real🤷♀️
@@malefiz7910 correct. People speak before getting informed with literally everything and then they keep sharing the same disinformation to others. Quite worrying. This is a TV show but imagine for even more serious matters.
@@cm7277 Well, you don't have to imagine. It is literally happening right now all over the world. And you are right, it is very worrying. But that's another issue ;)
Tan France had his own fashion brand. He did mention that before. So he does know fashion.
My favourite competition series is Face Off. It features prosthetic make up artists and I feel like not enough people saw that show but it was actually very wholesome, the judges were knowledgable, and the designs were cool as hell!
i was rooting for dragon princess since the beginning their colourful aesthetic and different takes on clothing and cultural references really made me love them and their personalities were also amazing i am excited to see what they put out next
I sped watched this series; I watched the beginning to see what the challenge was then forwarded it to the runway show and watched til the end. Quick and easy.
I literally just binge watched this yesterday and I really enjoyed it.
I loved that all the designers seemed to have a good time and there wasn't any manufactured drama between teams like most American shows seem to have. I also liked that everyone had a highlight of their speciality and design no matter what point they left the competition. it was fun to watch :)
The DRAG of Tan France has me dead
Boy didn't do basic research on Tan France. Tan started his own line of women's clothing and bathing suits for the more conservative-dressing women in his area when he moved to the US. Also, he co-started a line with Rachel Parcell. So...
So then why didn’t he use his knowledge to explain things?
WAS WAITING FOR THISSSS
While I didn’t enjoy Tan France as a judge, he did have his own label. It was a modest-themed label targeted at Mormon women so it’s maybe not high fashun, but it’s unfair to say he doesn’t understand the industry. 🤷♀️
He owned three brands total. They were mostly targeted for Mormon women yes. And he's also worked for major retails and couture. So it's not a newbie. Look on Wikipedia or search. he worked his way up. I appreciate this comment because even if you didn't like him which is a personal preference you admit he was knowledge and base to judge. The disinformation this video is spreading is just... And yes unfair
I don’t think it was targeted to Mormon women. He’s Pakistani Muslim so he was raised with many women in who are much more modest.
@@jaspalmuman9444 “The brand included clothing designed to meet Mormon clothing guidelines, a group that represented a significant population in Utah, where France was living.”
Hold up I would encourage you to do more research on Tan before judging him so harshly. Hes been sewing and doing garment constrsution since he was young teen spending his free time sewing denim jackets and pants for himself at his Grandads denim factory. Tan then studied Fashion Design at Doncaster college before going on to yes work at Zara but also Selfridge's, Bershka, and Chanel. He then went on to do designs for Mod Cloth and Forever 21 while starting his own Fashion line called Kingdom and State.
I will say, the winner was my favorite designer ☺️💕
Every time Alexa was asked a question, my tv room Alexa was trying to answer! Lol
LMAO AHAHA
girl leave me and my project runway replacement alone😭😭😭
Someone hire Luke so his critiques can match wardrobe.
I loved Tan! And I think he and Alexa had great chemistry! There were some inconsistencies and I agree with some of your critiques but overall the show was enjoyable and I liked a lot of the designers.
I want Minju to make everything in my closet
Same
I kind of agree with you re. Tan France but I liked his and Alexa's relationship on the show. I thought they had great chemistry and you can tell they actually like eachother.
Luke, we’re gonna need you to review the hot mess that was Next in Fashion season 2
Daniel: he was polished, elevated, and clean. Minju: fresh, colorful, and NEXT IN FASHION. Both were amazing however Minju had pieces that we've never seen. I loved Daniel's finale dress more than Minju's finale.
I skipped most of the judges' parts, I just went straight to the contestants' showcase XD can't stand those 2 together
Minju and Angel were adorable especially when they made their team name dragon princess
It really feels some of the the judges were not educated about cultural differences, minorities and their background, its very sad, it broke my heart seeing all of them leaving, they cut the Bird wings without compassion, cutting their dreams, their future, What makes the hosts becoming judges, Don't they understand whatever they express will impact the outcome? unfortunately is like living on the jungle, but they showed love for what they do and so much respect for each other.
You broke down the production values excellently. You are spot on regarding casting.
Many thanks for this great effort pointing fashion forward.
Well this show was really inspiring, it made me grab my old fashion design kit and start creating again. I don't understand the negative critique that a lot of people is having towards the show. It had flaws, yeah, but it's still great. You could connect greatly with most of the contestants and drama wasn't a main occurrence, the designs and fashion were the highlight and that's what a fashion design show should be like.
I like Luke but I wish he'd do more research sometimes. If he literally clicked on Tan's Wikipedia once before filming a twenty minute video trashing his credentials he'd have realised that Tan created and designed for multiple fashion brands, all of which were successes and enabled him to retire at age 33. It's such a weird attitude to say 'I didn't bother learning anything about Tan's career. Also he's never designed anything.'
The minju wedding dress took my breath away, literally. It was goosebumps
