- 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a blown engine that we repoed at the dealership, decided to crank it up after a couple days of inactivity. That engine is gone, and was really smoking up by the end of the video. 160,000 miles, inline 6 cylinder.
My 97 Grand just cracked 192,000 miles on the odo. Still runs like a tank. That 4.0 is one of the best engines that came from Chrysler.
A beautiful symphony of sound.
In the 80s/90s I did that with Chryslers 2.2/2.5. Once you change a few head gaskets on the same engines, you learn a lot of time saving short cuts.
Most people cannot even change the oil.
those old AMC straight 6 engines were among the best, with a reputation to back it up...i have one with 156 K; it's a real workhorse and runs like a champ. this one lived a rough life. so did the rest of the jeep.
Poor neglected WJ. But go figure, in typical "can't kill it" Jeep fashion, the 4.0L still starts up and attempts to idle. lol
Actually, it's a Laredo but I agree.
@@thechannelofrandomvideos789 WJ is the chassis designation for Grand Cherokees model years 1999-2004, regardless of trim level.
@@AKJeeper oh ok
I like it and I want it are u selling ?
@@simonewright1307 lmao
its one of those rare 3 cylinder jeeps! lol
Broken Piston Skirt(s)
Typical 4.0 engine failure.
Amazing it didn't lock up while filming, it's very close from the sound of the Piston Slap.
i have a 1976 mail jeep with an inline 6 no telling how many miles it has! great engines
this truly makes me sad! i have a 04' wj w/ the 4.0 and i treasure this vehicle..! Its terrible to see a motor capable of 300K + destroyed.. Its obvious that the owner didn't care about too much by the looks of the interior.. Anyway, REBUILD IT, LET THE 4.0 LIVE!!
I have one just like this one. There is a piston in the oil pan and the racket is the wrist pin hitting the cylinder wall. I think this 4.0 is good for cracking pistons and eventually they come appart.
thats the i6 for you, never wants to die
Nice sounding engine!!
What NO NOT AT ALL???????!?!?
But is nocking like demon
I've been looking for this noise all night. Looking for everything torque converter or trans related. Sadly it's time to except I've murdered the 5.3 😭
I have a 99 model with 143,000 and have had no problems other than the general stuff. Only had to replace the water pump (it broke on my way from Colorado to Alabama while towing a full uhaul pull behind. I love my Jeep, especially the green color like i got.
@tripovermyego Oil does create vapor, but think about what you're saying...if oil created THAT much vapor, you'd be topping it off constantly. The gas is called blowby. It is gas that slips by the rings and enters the crankcase. The main thing that happens when it builds too much...it blows gaskets finding places to escape. I'm a master certified tech, guy....trust me. Oil pressure is read off the main oil galley after the pump, where crankcase pressure wouldn't affect it.
Yes, my family had 3 Grand Cherokee's (92, 96, 00) all with the 4.0L and none of them gave us a big problem. The 96 did have a rear axle leak but we took care of that easily. Plus all lasted with over 100K miles on them. The 92-04 are probably the most reliable Jeeps out there. You probably did get a lemon. Sorry, hope that didn't turn you off to Jeeps
@my2006SS Cool, that's a good idea. Keep the Jeeps going! You're right about the head gasket though, that seems to be a part of an engine that nobody knows how to change except for those who love working on cars or mechanics. Also, I hate how some people think that if an engine needs a part replaced, it's unacceptable since they should make every part of the engine last forever. Like if a gasket, belt, or a sensor goes bad, the car is "junk." HELLO?! This happens with any engine out there!
Im guessing its running in like 4 out of the 6 cylinders... Probably blown piston rings, maybe a few rods thrown here and there, the head gasket is probably no more, maybe dropped a few valves, etc.
Yep.
TheAssassin650 so if your Jeep is making this exact knock sound it's most definitely the motor correct? I'm having the same issue with mine only it was kinda sudden and it will cut off after about 10 mins of driving and will need to sit before it'll crank again
Inceptionz The sound of the jeep in particular in this video if you hear that regardless of knowing specifically what it is you can certainly rule out the fact that it is fucked
Everything's screwed up, when an engine blows, the valves, drivetrain, valvetrain, pistons, cylinder walls, piston pin, connecting rods lose their ability to "hold together" so when the engine moves, the loose parts rattle. This is basically the death rattle of an engine, also when the engine gets blown, the pistons, cylinders, valvetrain all lose their normal shape, thus making that engine death rattle (Also there's no oil in it so that's the cause of it sounding so loud because there's no oil.)
This is something in the top end for sure... A rocker arm and valve are flapping around in there somewhere haha
I have a Jeep like this and its running strong with over 185,000 miles on it
It's a jeep.....jump in it drive to the store, buy some beer. Then go to the parts store, spend $400 on parts, drive it home and spend a Saturday fixing it. Right now my '96 4.0 sits with 288,000 on it. So far just 2 water pumps and 1 radiator. Runs as strong as the day I bought it with 11 miles on it. They are a pretty bullet proof engines.
Sounds like a Tractor.
All jeeps do lol
This engine isn't blown, it's just got a broken piston.
Seven year old video. Somebody is probably still driving that inline six around, saying, "Ya, gonna' need a valve job soon".
Hocus Focus Productions actually. It was fixed somewhere in 2012 or 2013. Haven’t seen a video ever since.
@MrUnderpaid I agree, my dad had one, and boy did I like it! they look good lifted too. Can't go wrong with one
just enough compression to come alive lol
COOL Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Blown Engine Start Up, Exhaust, and Tour
2:57 I like that startup
on the one hand its awesome watching you try to force it to run despite a blown engine, but on the other, its heart wrenching to see it suffer more knowing some fucker beat the piss out of it. It would make a great 4x4 if it had been driven right. :(
Most any manufacture that made a inline six they were bomb proof. I had a 1978 F-100 with a 300 inline six. It was my first vehicle so it got dogged. Bought it for $500 and had it nearly two years then sold it.
The 4.0L in these jeeps were good. I say that and I hate most anything Mopar. I know that they had trouble with what is called piston slap but that doesn't sound like it in this case.
Timing chain guide has broken or slipped, the chain is slapping at idle. It sounds like the timing is off one tooth,if you put a new chain on it and reset timing you should be good. You keep running it like that your going to bend the valves and need a new head.
I just went here from the update vid,and man not much has changed
wow, 160,000 for a 2000, lots of miles, my uncle has a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, his had a blown motor, but he got it replaced, and last time I checked it had 128,XXX miles on the odometer. :-), this jeep has a lot of miles
All the vapor out of the exhaust and the weird sounding startup points to a badly blown head gasket.
They probably kept driving it and all the antifreeze mixing into the oil ruined the bearings.
that engine is toast O_o
The '97-'00 4.0L's were known for having weak crank bearings... They got it right again around '01.
This makes me sooo sadddd!!! How could you do thiss??!! Ugh and that engine is soo strong and reliable mine has 155000 miles and runs great! And its super clean
This goes to show that people don't give a damn about their cars. The Grand Cherokee actually has one of the most reliable engines.
Before cash for clunkers, you could find these engines all over the place. A couple hundred dollars, a cherry picker or engine hoist, a couple buddies and a case of beer on a saturday afternoon and you're all set.
4.0 engines lives
No Worries, that will buff out!
Ugh, looks like they were living in it. It's no surprise that the engine knocks. 4.0s usually take a lot of abuse. 4.7s are a great engine as well, but require spot-on maintenance. What a shame. It could be a nice vehicle again though.
2 year old video but..
Late 99-01 had bad heads. Could of cracked, sent coolant into the oil, and killed the bearings.
There was a couple years of WJs that had problems cracking piston skirts too, I think 00 was one of them.
My dad had a grand Cherokee. It was a good car. Wait he had 2 a larado and a v8 I loved them both
Hell on my GC I was told when it hits 200,000 there just getting started
@ x2xhellx3x. I'm not a mechanic so I'm not for sure but. The defination varies by person. I{think most ppl} consider a "blown motor" one that has blown a rod and/or piston. It may still run like this one but on less cylinders. A seized motor on the other hand, is a motor that is locked and dosn't run at all. usually from being run with no oil or having clunky oil in it.
Hope this helps!
@tripovermyego No...no.....it's not. Exhaust gas build up has exactly nothing to do with how the oil pressure gets read.
lmao, I told you! In the related videos list, theres all the these supercharged Cherokee videos
I don't know how a guy kills one of those 4.0's? i have an '89 with 238,500 on it and still drive it EVERY day. I also use it to pull trailers, hay wagons, other cars, tree's ect. It also starts right up when i had to go to work when it was -35. they were bullet proof for sure!
I know a lot of people that have had tons of problems with these cars. But i believe the v-8 models have far more issues. I try to avoid anything made by Diamler-Chrysler lol
Sounds like a valvetrain problem, like a bent pushrod (these are pushrod engines).
@MrKaninja You could usually say that about a Jeep 4.0 engine. But this oen is fucked. Badd crank. I mean look that the oil pressure gauge, it has no pressure!
@alientech2010 yeah, They look nice, ride nice but have alot of issues, I thought these were good motors, but after doing some research found blown engines on Jeeps ,esp Grand Cherokees, before 200,000 miles is quite common. These vehicles have alot of issues.
@tripovermyego It's cool...but you are right, not good to clamp that port...could push out a main seal, lose all the oil and fry the engine REAL quick...
GM would call that normal piston slap and send you on your way.
your right that I have a 01 4.0{the only positive thing about it} and it has alot of issues but the engine hasn't been a issue like it is in the V8s corse its not a Chrysler engine either. The V8s also have more sophisticated 4x4 systems and computer which causes more issues as well. The only thing Chryslers has going for them is looks thats it. AVOID them at all cost, I learned it the hard way. lol
It wants to get restored so bad. 1:26 Beauty
So sad, for one, Chrysler got rid of their best engine, the jeep 4.0l. two, its very hard to kill one of these motors.
we got a 2000 jeep Cherokee with a blown engine the owner didn't take care of it there was a problem with it it's a repo
@Motorfordtoyota
I really hope you're not being serious. This engine is highly known to be very unreliable.
rod bearing.....inline 6's make power down low, not meant to be revved...this is the result
@drippinblood28 True, seems like the engine is the only good thing that lasts on these vehicles. I have read people have got over 300k on Jeep Cherokees but never a GC. I think with all the issues the cooling system(running hot, overheating and other stuff) GC have, its nearly impossible to to get 300K out of the motor.
I would think it weird that you'd do a walkaround of a blown car, but I saw you do a walkaround of a semi-trailer...
Ain't blown. It's just the cam they got in it.
It is blown, didn't you hear the knocking?
TheFallingShadows he's joking dipshit
Shut up
Oof
Bruh
That's a pretty loud engine
i had to have mine replaced and it had oil and coolant and yet still blew
Broken piston skirt. Very common on the 99+ 4.0 for some reason.
You can get a re-manufactured engine from Jasper for $2500.
My jeep sounds exactly like this jeep turning over on a cold start XD (negative degree weather)
Really??
She needs some lovin bruh
This thing is still running with the same inline 6 to this day
I don't know what might happen once we jump it off. we are looking for an engine for it
did you check out the valve cover no bolts!! prolly spit a rod or lifter collapsed
Im thinking of buying a 2002 wrangler 4.0, 5 speed 50k miles....what are some common problems. I had a 99 cherokee 4.0 and the auto trans. went out at 100k so is the 5 speed a better choice,
here in Europe, we have those with the brilliant 2.7 mercedes cdi engine.. No issues what so ever!! :)
Good car!
And btw, can somebody plz define "blown up engine" ??? I mean.. if its blown up, howcome it can still run?
It might be a silly question.. But I am really lost there, cuz when I hear about a blown up engine I just think, "dead.. no chance of reparing, no need of even trying to start it.."
I am a huge gearhead though. So I hope for an answer!
P.S sorry for the spelling, no time!
Better get that "check engine" light checked out.
i am shoked that the service engine light was not on i mean the computer should have noticed the high oil pressure
I'm suprised that the engine still had enough compression to fire.
But she's done anyway.....
SHE IS BOUGHT BACK TO LIFE!! YES!!!! But Still Need Some Repair
Edit: Did The Jeep Changed Oil?
Edit 2: 5:26 Please Don’t Get On Fire
Edit 3: OH, DID THE ENGINE CHANGED?
What is actually wrong with that engine?
Oil not kept to proper level?
Not changed enough?
Nor is the back engine ground conected what was this video posted for ?
Thank you to the people that posted on this video, I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee just like this, it had a loud knocking, then all of a sudden lost power and started making that noise, now I know it is a thrown rod. Is this somewhat easily fixable if it didn't destroy the crank or the cylinder wall?
damn that is sad it looks really nice still not beat up or torn up inside or out
just full of crap and in need of a major cleaning
until you hear the engine
with 160K miles on the 6cyl engine I am guessing that either
A,, someone never checked the oil
or B they Hot rodded the crap out of it
most likely they forgot to ever check the oil cause knowing what I do about inline 6 engines, I know they will take some serious torture
4.0L 6 is almost as tough as a Ford 300-6
it was i mean my ex n i was in her home town and i went to put it in 4wd when it started knocking but as it had done such before i disregarded that as it just being really cold
well i read online some wheres the type of inline six that mine was apparently once 10000 miles get put on it something about it makes the engine take a dump
its a modefied 225 slant six
obviously wont die
I wonder how much abuse that poor 4.0 had to endure before letting go. Those 4.0's regulary go over 230k plus
only a jeep inline 6 could do that and still be drivable
@commanderphoenix1 Maybe thats because the 4.0l was originally from AMC.
Old school SaabKyle video
Serious question. What happens if you drive it like that ? bout to buy a jeep like this for only $400 1999 though
If it sounds like that or has a blown engine, it's not worth it at all
Chanulet I guess you're right buying a broken car is like buying food that's already been ate
My dad had a 2000 Legacy and the engine blew, and it didn't last long. Just buy a car that's like a Honda or something reliable and cheap.
I'm honestly just looking for a hooptie but an attractive hoopty so I can keep the miles low on my 2007 Yukon Denali my Denali is not every day car especially gas prices being $2.50 a gallon that's crazy to drive my Yukon every day like it's a Honda
Since there's no oil then the pistons will heat (Temp gauge will show to the H (Overheat) then weld together, OR it could cause a serious malfunction because the piston is coming into contact with the valve
well it's not technically blown up yet, the longer you run it, the less chance it has to be rebuilt... the block is not a total loss...
@0rganDon0r thanks:) I do enjoy fixing things. I tend to baby everything I own but yes this is discusting how anyone can trash things:( living in an apt complex I see and fix more busted cars around here just from lack of maintenence. VERY SAD:(
Thats a fucked up engine, poor cherokee
yeah dude that car is my favorite jeep to be honest with you
+Brendan Kennington mine as well, specially if its an overland with the 4.7 v8
Locodlr94 how many miles?
I bet some people down the street thought it was a big cam hemi v8 lol
@640101vh yeah i guess you're right about that. They don't tolerate high rpms either, but will really last you even 400k or 500k if they never overheat and stuff like that.
Is this Jeep the one that featured on a cash for clunkers destruction video? It is the same model year and has the same color and rims. That one threw two rods and was still going, really tough
Do you know why the crank on blown engines sounds that way?
Sounds good to me put it on the lot,LOL would be better than what most buy here pay here lots sale.
god dang look at the oil pressure 4:00
@my2006SS You'd be surprised. Some people don't understand the simple concept of changing the oil in their car's engine every 3,000 miles, that is if you are using regular oil as opposed to Synthentic blend or Full Synthetic oils which can go longer between changes. They keep driving the car ignoring this and one day the engine starts knocking from poor lubrication. People still don't notice it and then this happens. It's sick. Many women in particular don't know shit about cars.
@tniemirski yea thats whats wrong! Would putting air in my tires fix my slipping rear end?? Well every on youtube knows who not to go to for car problems
@2004NissanSentra 25,000 miles? she better start searching for a new engine, because it will probably blow sooner then later .
