    The optional gears for the straight axles are released if you want to try them in the transmission. Mine are on the way, now. Axial Racing 232033 Input Metal Gears 20T & 34T. Also comes with the two 27T gears that came with the kit, but it's the only way they are currently sold.

    I'm sticking with the TRX4 for now. I have 2. The first one is a Defender with the HobbyWing AXE 550 3300kv and the other started life as a Mercedes 500 (got a great deal on it) but immediately after purchase was modified to accept a Killerbody LC70. It's running the stock motor with a HobbyWing 1080esc.
    For me the 2 speed transmission is the biggest draw to the truck and it seems Traxxas is still winning in that department.
    We don't have a lot of technical crawling around here and I'm too lazy to build my own course. Trail running and climbing red clay ditch banks is the thing around here. I start in first and try to "technically" crawl it, when this doesn't work a second gear "blast" to the top is the best way 😉.
    I won't knock the SCX 10 III. It looks like a great truck. 👍

    i think the best way to set it up at present is 11 or 12 tooth pinion and use the 2 speed for extra wheel speed on a lower turn brushed or low kv brushless motor... If you choose a 2300 kv and up brushless just save your money on the transmission servo and just gear it via pinion. Although i believe that if you buy the replacement primary transmission gears from axial it includes the optional straight axle ratio gear in the bag... then another lower transmission ratio becomes available to you for testing..

    I'd prefer something like the Hobbywing 'Axe' brushless motor and ESC than the problematic mechanical complexities of a multi-speed transmission. A Tesla model 'S' has a single-speed power train that allows it to match or better some of the fastest supercars on the planet. Why a 6+lb RC truck needs the complexities and maintenance concerns of a multi-speed transmission(and its appurtenances) I cannot fathom.

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  Před 4 lety +1

      Only thing with the Axe is it's not a high rpm motor. It's kind of a sleeper on our Gen8. On our TRX4 or TRX6, it is a beast since it is torquey and the 2nd gear lets it fly.

      @@RCReviewChannel From what I have seen the Redcat Gen8 Axe Edition scoots along quite nicely at a maximum velocity of about 15+mph (150+ 'scale' MPH) while retaining competition level 'crawling' abilities. I've never seen a 'full-sized' International Scout do 150mph on either dirt OR asphalt; have you? Axial is simply 'gilding a lily' by putting in these superfluous multi-speed transmissions and the servos and hardware necessary to actuate them. The reason MP3 players became so popular is NO MOVING PARTS to go wrong as there were in cassette, 8track, and CD players. Don't we already have enough "moving parts" to contend with on our RC trucks?

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  Před 4 lety +1

    So the brushed Traxxas has the same speed as the brushless Axial... But the Trax-ass can go much slower.
    Curious, you guys said your modified TRX6 hits 30mph, doing some basic algebra for the 25:1 high and 64:1 low, that means you have at least 11.7mph of speed in 1st gear in a much heavier truck... So if the 10.3 does just under that what's the issue? why would that be too high of a low gear when you choose to gear up your 6x6 that way.

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  Před 4 lety +1

      The TRX-6 actually is 25mph for bashing with a big 15t pinion and a Hobbywing Axe 550, so not quite 30. Possible but the rear tires were touching each other already at full speed. We did it for a couple weeks to bash, race, do jumps and shoot a bunch of rowdy video.
      It's back to a 12-tooth now. But we can swap around depending on the task/play at hand. It has unlocking diffs which actually makes it controllable and fun at high speed.

      @@RCReviewChannel oh, your thumbnail says "TRAXXAS 6X6 (break) 30+ MPH CRAWLER (break) JUMP 'N CRAWL"
      Was the 15 tooth pinion problematic for crawling then? I can get my puller pro 2700kv to climb in 2nd gear with decent torque modulation while maintaining really slow wheel speeds on stock gearing, but the slipper clutch will slip with too much load. So I wasn't even concerned with a going to a larger pinion.
      I was considering going to a 15 tooth pinion because yours crawls so well and I though it was a 3,300 kv motor with a 14 tooth pinion.
      Maybe I'll just run a 4s lipo to get my 2700kv motor to 40,000 rpm and into the 20mph range and stay on the stock gearing.
      This is why I wish traxxas would run a wider gear spread for their high and low. Something similar to the Rubicon 4:1 low range would be nice... going from a 25:1 high to a 16:1 would be sweet.

  • @isaiahfurrow7414
    @isaiahfurrow7414 Před 4 lety

    That is plenty different for a low range and a trail gear... no need for 15-20MPH... I don't like the huge jump to 2nd gear in the TRX4, makes first either too slow, or 2nd too fast... some might like it that way, but I think the Axial is perfect.... I wouldn't want super slow and fast, I want 1st slow enough to crawl, but not so slow you always need 2nd for a bit of wheel speed...and want 2nd so it has extra speed for trail runs, but not basher and jumping speed, that just breaks stuff amd destroys bodies...
    I'm plannimg a 3s setup in the 1850kv range, so it might just work out about perfect with the 14t pinion...
    Thanks for the great video comparison... also kinda sounds like the Axial transmission is quieter now...

    • @RCReviewChannel
      @RCReviewChannel  Před 4 lety +2

      Good points. But it's not a question of going 15-20mph. It's more an issue of going 1-4 mph on low then maybe up to 9mph on high. This will allow great control with any motor.
      Otherwise, a 40% increase in speed is hardly worth all those gears/noise/weight/linkage/servo/channel.

    That's embarrassing for Axial, you need about $500 to keep up, with that money you're about to spend, i'd move up to Vanquish instead.

    My Gen 8 is faster, jk, it’s really not. This axial looks really popular. My question is do people really drive these trucks fast? I’m looking at a prerunner truck for going fast and jumping

    Keep seeing adds for what appears to be high quality rc but the price is for what you would get from walmart or RadioShack. Lol. It's a scam. Like an hmk 490 LC HD. An its only 40 bucks. Yea right. Its thousands. So people beware
