    ► My Top 3 Smart Bike Trainers For Zwift: www.smartbiketrainers.com/201...
    This is a failed attempt to review the Kinetic R1 direct drive smart trainer. The trainer didn't turn on and in this video I will discuss all the issues I've had with their circuit boards and what you should know before buying a Kinetic trainer.

      Matt Thompson They held sale last fall after my review to rectify the issue with the PCB fuse. According to Kinetic, this issue should be resolved now and they also adjusted the belt tension to minimize the noise. Hopefully I will have another review in the next month or so.

    I've got a Road Machine and a Rock and Roll (with inRide) and I love the simplicity of the fluid resistance which seems to be bomb proof. I was looking at an R1 but the reliability issues and the noise have put me right off! Thanks for the heads up.

    Thanks for the review. Much more informative than the other well known reviewers who would have you think that every trainer works perfect. And agree with others, that noise level is terrible, worse than my gen 1 kickr.

    Thanks, Tariq! I'll keep waiting for KK to resolve their problems. I learned a long time ago to NOT be any company's beta tester. I'll stick with my indestructible dumb R&R for a while longer.

    KK has a history of shipping things before ready for prime time. I still think their dumb fluid trainer is the best when used with a separate pedal based power meter.

    Hey All,
    I am on my second Kinetic R1 and have plans to test out the replacement unit later this evening. Here are the issues I experienced:
    1. My unit seemed to have a defective flywheel, it seems bent / out of true. I was able to ride the first unit for two Zwift rides but there was a constant knocking sound from the flywheel being bent, I contacted KK about this and they immediately sent out a replacement unit (kudo's to KK for the fast customer service). I was told by KK that I can still use the unit until the replacement unit arrives as it should only be the knocking noise and no further issues.
    2. When I rode it for a third time there was a burning smell coming from the flywheel when going at high power outputs and after some time the resistance didn't respond as expected. The resistance was locked at a level that had me spinning out like I was in a 34/28 when I was actually in a 50/11. At this point I removed my bike from the trainer and put it back on my KK Rock and Roll dumb trainer.
    3. Initial positive impressions is that the resistance makes each ride a real workout when set to 100% trainer difficulty. I realized that having a compact and 11/32 for the mountain routes was a necessity if I don't want to blow up my knees.
    4. I did a quick setup and very brief test ride on the replacement unit and it seemed all good.
    5. Kinetic Connect App was slow to find the kinetic R1 as a sensor and I had to unplug and restart the app a couple of times to finally make a connection and check for a firmware update. Update was needed and took a few minutes to update. After updating the firmware I performed a calibration and which seemed easy enough and it only took all of 5 minutes.
    Hopefully I just got bad luck and this second R1 works fine. I really want a smart resistance trainer to get the real climbing feeling when in Zwift but didn't want to use Kickr because it's fixed.
    Peace!

  • @Chader9
    @Chader9 Před 5 lety +4

    Sad, but not unexpected. I hope Kinetic can fix these units and keep relevant in the trainer world. They inspired my rocker plate efforts and I think they have some potential, but they also have some real work to get on par with the other products on the market.

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  Před 5 lety +2

      They need to figure out the resistance unit. They seem to be struggling with that and that’s going to hurt them. The noise level need to come down a bit too.

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 Před 5 lety

      @@SmartBikeTrainers yeah, they are behind the curve on sound and initial release use. The pricing, specs and rocking feature might be well placed, if they can get them functional and consistent. But it's hard to see that happening quickly since this seems to be headed in the same (problematic) direction that we saw with the Smart Control wheel-on models.
      I hope they fix it, because it has potential and I want the rocking function to be pushed to other manufacturers.
      Time will tell.

    My R1 has a problem with the load controls. Sometimes I lose all resistance and stop no mater how fast i pedal
    Some time indicated power goes way up beyond my ability on mountain climbs. This has gotten me DQed when racing. They have been responsive to troubleshoot but here I am a year later and it's not resolved.

  • @shakilharoon1649

    My R1 just arrived - looks solid out of the box and the physical assembly was quick and easy. However, I am having MAJOR problems getting the app to pair with trainer and update firmware. App initially paired with both my Apple Watch and Trainer and the firmware update process kicked off as expected. But the update process stalled at 84% with no progress indicated for 10mins+. Subsequent app restarts/reinstalls and trainer power on/off seem to have made matters worse - now the app does not show the trainer (or watch) as connected devices at all. Anyone know the best way to get Kinetic customer support?

    • @BluedotProductions
      @BluedotProductions Před 3 lety +1

      They have a lot of help pages basically saying to unhook any other apps from the KK, and cycle your bluetooth, the trainer and your iOS device. I've done all of these a few times, and my brand new road machine is still flaky trying to get a connection in Zwift. When I asked my local bike shop they told me to go Tacx Neo and sell it.

  • @SiliconEngineer
    @SiliconEngineer Před 5 lety

    That is really sad. My KK wheel-on smart trainer (not the rock and roll version) has been really solid for over 2 years and ~10K miles. The thing is built like a bison, and has taken incredible abuse with sprints. KK was not my first choice, I must say. I had to switch after multiple issues with Tacx Flux-es (fluid leak to weird noises).

    Terrible sound... Other thing, I don’t know if it's an optic illusion, but I noticed in your video at 6:20 that the cassette seems to sway a little, as if there were a big freeplay in the freehub.

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  Před 5 lety +1

      Unfortunately, even with the usb port, most applications don’t support it. So it has to come from both sides. But if trainers start to allow this, we might see Zwift, Trainer Road and others start to support it as well.

    Another sad story of a company that went from market domination to irrelevant. I hope they'll figure out a way to make a quiet, bug-free and cheaper unit. It has to be significantly cheaper than Kickr, Drivo and Neo to be considered as a viable alternative.
