As a woman with no periods due to medical issues, I'm here to let you know that it's not us who get offended at womanhood being connected to periods, it's other people getting offended in our name without any of our input. We are in no way or shape oppressed or invalidated by other women talking about their own periods 🛀.

I've used pads for most of my life as well and I used to feel a little embarassed about it because to me it seemed like at a certain age you're supposed to wear tampons. However I also don't love the plastic feeling of pads, especially in the summer, and have switched to period underwear about two years ago. It's super comfortable and reusable (yay sustainability!), even though it's a little pricey and the one I have isn't vegan unfortunately. I've also had a menstrual cup for many years and have never gotten the hang of it until recently when I purchased a different cup (literally the smallest one I could find and very flexible). I already like it so much more and use it with the underwear on the heavier days.

I’m so glad that you’re comfortable to talk about your experience. I have few advices for you, since I’m on the final year of medicine . First is: don’t pressure yourself for using menstrual cups or tampons if you’re not comfortable with the idea. Since you are not sexually active, it could be painful to put it inside because of sitff vaginal muscles and tightness, so I would stick to the pads if I were you. Second: make sure that you use natural pads, without colors or parfume that could trigger endocrine disruption and cause more painful periods. Third: make sure to keep records of your period, you can use apps like period calender where you can see if everything was ok retrospectively.

A few things to consider with period cups (I had to make the transition as I went abroad longterm, with only crazy expensive and chemical filled period products available where I went).
    1. There are not only different sizes but also different flexibilities in the silicone cups. Some people need the more flexible ones (they are way more easy to get in and out) but the more harder ones will prevent leakage better.
    2. Start slowly on a day with heavy flow. Or use a safe lubricant for down there. The first few times it will not be pleasant. But as you get a grip on how to get it in and out it will feel like a breeze. Just do one day if you had troubles inserting it multiple times to prevent yourself getting sores.
    3. Some women have issues getting it out. I never came across that issue. Mine is always easy to reach. But be warned. Go to your OB/GYN if you have the feeling you cannot get it out. I was told they will get it out in matters of seconds and that it will not hurt! But if you know you cannot "recover" them on your own, stop using them.
    4. Try multiple folding techniques. Some do not work at all for me. I have found my favorite way of folding it and it is really easy now. Do not give up if it does not get in the first time.
    5. If you still can feel the cup when moving it is not in deep enough. I made that mistake the first time. It hurt like crazy. It is not supposed to hurt. If I still can feel it I push it in in a rotating motion, it will not get in deeper by just pushing it.
    6. If you leak make sure the cup had the chance to unfold itself inside of you. If you have the feeling you need to change the cup within the first hours it either did not unfold itself (I make sure to hear air getting into it) or your cup is too soft (then try a harder one, usually you will have to switch to another brand).
If I would not have had to get used to them, I would probably given up the second day. Be gentle on yourself and try it throughout multiple cycles. I now could not imagine going back to pads or tampons. They are so much more gentle to your skin and they do not dry you out. And yes the environmental aspect is a huge one. I just boil mine with a bit of sodium bicarbonate (the one you use for baking) in water for 10 minutes after each cycle and use fresh tap water when I pour them out. Best thing that ever happened to me!
    Hope that helps someone!

I’m crying watching this Holly. Periods are so important in terms of health for women, but there is surprisingly very little information out there, as it just isn’t spoken about. For anyone reading this, please consult your doctor ASAP if you are worried about anything to do with this, especially lack of periods. It can be a range of medical conditions and ultimately your body is trying to alert you that something isn’t right. Sometimes it is just as simple as a lack of vitamins (folic acid etc).

Then my friend reminded me that trying it was like trying anything else - if you don't 'succeed' the first time then that's okay, there's plenty of time and opportunities to try again. Concerning the products, it was/is the same for me. I didn't use tampons until I had my first sexual experience, which was only in my twenties, because I just could not bring myself to try tampons. I would get really emotional when even thinking about it, and I was also really ashamed and didn't talk to friends about it. I used tampons for a while after that, but they are just not my thing, and I much prefer pads. I also feel bad about the environmental issues, but I am just not comfortable with using anything else, so I try to reduce my footprint elsewhere as much as I can. I am so so glad that right now I am comfortable enough to tell people (if they ask obviously haha) that I don't like tampons, but for a very long time I felt ashamed about that. It just made me realise how much there still is to teach people of all genders and ages about periods, there is still a huge stigma around it.

do it in the shower and be sure to collapse it inside to eliminate risk of painful removal (which usually happens cause if the suction) I wish someone told me that. It would have saved me from some trouble and mess.

Plus it took me ages to come to use tampons, but I found that trying them for the first time is easiest on your heaviest day as there's a lot more 'lubricant' (sorry if that's too much TMI). So maybe give it a go when your period is particularly heavy (and make sure there's plenty of paper tissues and soap on hand for the clean up)

Holly, I would advise that for the first time using a menstrual cup, try it at the later end of your cycle, or when it’s lower flow - I think it just puts a little less pressure on ‘getting it right’ first time and almost allows you to practice. I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve used one and not worked, which can be quite discouraging, but I think the less pressure you put on yourself and the cup initially, the better 😊 I’ve been using one for 5+ years and I can’t imagine going back.

17:17 also reminder that if these cramps or pain interfere with your movement, getting out of bed, going to work or school, etc, and basically hinder your 'normality' of life, there may be another issues like endometriosis (1 in 9ish women have it) or pcos or something else. While low-key cramps are normal, if they cause bad pain and prevent you from really 'living', go to the doctors! Pain is very normalised for women and its not normal.

I've always been super excited about clith pads, since they're so colourful and soft. I've never had a full or not ridiculously heavy, healthy period. So I'm excited to see a video on how you got your period back! I also really recommend cloth pads and cloth pantyliners! Precious stars pads sells pretty affordable ones

in the meantime, or maybe if you don't end up liking the cup after all, there's reusable pads as well. i've been using mine for almost two years now and they're great! you just rinse them off cold after using and then put them in the wash like you would every other item of clothing :) maybe give those a try!

Also I'm on the pill because my periods were super heavy and made me miserable each month - not having a period doesn't make me less of female-identifying/biologically female, and it's out of choice/convenience/sometimes necessity for my mental health and well-being. I think there's too much emphasis of not offending anyone, even if it's unintentional or you didn't realise....

Dear Holly, there are also washable period underpants that work like a pad. As an alternative to the cup... Although they cost a bit more, especially if you get a few, but it is also more sustainable than pads and the quality is usually very good, so they last a long time :)

omg i relate so much to being on your period while performing as a young person. i was once in the choir in the touring performance of joseph and i came onto maybe my second or third period. i had such bad cramps and would have to sit still on these rafters for each half of the show and it was torture. i also was so embarrassed getting changed and worried that people would see my pad so would always have to go into the loos. my sister told the woman who ran our stage school, who was so lovely and kept talking about how she was on her period too and trying to make me feel better. but when you’re 12 and aren’t used to talking about periods it’s MORTIFYING when someone knows and tries to chat with you about it. all in all a solid 0/10 would not recommend.

So good that you can talk about this stuff! For the menstrual cup, when I first started using mine I found that it was recommended to use some water-based lube when inserting. Minimizes any pain etc. Also I'd recommend watching some videos from Precious Star Pads because they have some great tips. Also if the menstrual cup doesn't work out for you, there are also reusable pads which you can get so you're being more sustainable in a way that works for your body (I have a friend who cannot use inserted products for medical reasons so this is what she does).
I will however note I never had any trouble with tampons and such, I had swimming training the first day I got my period and I didn't want to miss it so I was stubborn and figured out tampons from day 1.

    @sophiepalmer4612 Pƙed 3 lety +1

Great video. I just wanted to add that yes, it is normal to have symptoms associated with your period e.g. bloating, cramps, headache, fatigue. But it is NOT normal to have symptoms that disrupt your day-to-day activity. There are a number of menstrual disorders (like endometriosis and hormonal migraines etc) that are absolutely debilitating and unfortunately the medical community has a long way to go in offering prompt, effective treatment for those that suffer from these illnesses. It has taken me 14 years to finally be taken seriously and to be on heavy duty treatment and surgery to basically correct my body. If you are blacking out, vomiting, dizzy, losing your vision (big indication of migraine with aura), have a debilitating headache, have extreme temperature changes or unmanageable cramps please get checked out and don't just put up with it or think it's normal! Unfortunately sexism is still rampant in medicine and female issues are often not taken seriously, but getting the right treatment is essential for quality of life and to potentially improve fertility. Endometriosis, for example, can be helped sometimes by stomach implants that induce (easily reversible) menopause and by surgery etc.

I stopped in the middle of the video just when you show the menstrual cup to make this comment. Minutes before, I was thinking internally that perhaps a menstrual cup would be very helpful to completely reconcile with your body and period (it did for me, and I have been always very ok with it). And when I saw that you have taken the step of buying it (that's incredible) I got surprised, and even greater to see that it is the same as mine. I'm glad it is the same brand and size because I sincerely hope you have a good experience just like me. In my case it was October of last year when I made that same change from pads to menstrual cup (without intermediaries or sexual experiences) and I'm honestly very happy.
Just some extra tips apart from the general ones that I hope your sister or other sources of information will let you know:
    - Before trying to insert the cup, try to get to know yourself and explore yourself a little. With your clean hands. Lying on the bed or whatever. Try to gently touch the surroundings of yourself with a finger and if you feel capable, insert it, with all the patience and time in the world. Thanks to that, you will have a minimal notion of where and towards which direction to go.
    - If you get frustrated that none of the recommended positions help you insert your menstrual cup easily, try those same positions in the shower. In my case, if it weren't for the shower, I doubt I would have been able to insert it the first time. That was the only time I needed to be in the shower, from then on I have always been able to do it out.
    - Do not freak out in case you sleep with it and the next morning you try to get it out right when you get up. It will probably be high up on your vagina, and you might not reach it well enough to catch or pull it down, but don't worry - it won't go anywhere. Just walk, have your breakfast, do something for 10 minutes while gravity does its job, and then try again.
    - Keep in mind that tension (due to stress, unfamiliarity, etc...), even if you don't feel like you're doing it, can play a trick on you. This applies to the morning thing (too high + stress because you can't reach it = pelvic floor muscles tensioned), and some other scenarios like being in a rush can make it difficult to insert it or take it out.
With experience you will be able to have control of your muscles down there and you will be able to help yourself with them, making everything easier
