Toyota GR Yaris vs Porsche 718 Cayman | DRAG RACE

  • What’s faster in a drag race… a Toyota GR Yaris or a Porsche 718 Cayman?
The GR Yaris is Toyota's very sporty edition of the small family car. It's a little pocket rocket. The GR Yaris has a 1.6 litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol, which generates 320 bhp - which is higher than the standard as this isn't an ordinary GR Yaris. It's been tuned by Evolve Automotive, and it's incredible how fast it is in a drag race!
This Porsche 718 Cayman is the entry-level 2.0-litre version. The four-cylinder engine produces 296 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. It's fully standard, so it'll be interesting to see how it performs against the Yaris in this unusual drag race pairing!
We run these two cars through four challenges: a standing quarter-mile, a rolling on mile top speed test, an ever-increasing braking test and finally, our favourite, the Moose Test.

Yaris is a rally cross style on a cheaper lightweight platform (transverse turbo front engine front diff and a small rear diff for the small grip left in the rear) while the Porsche is on a gt style platform probably more robust, different driving style and experience and different interior quality. The 1/4 times are also important and toyota did a good job with the help of Mäkinen. For rally coast fans Toyota is the way to go while for circuit track day and daily I would prefer the cayman although yaris is pretty good there too and cheaper to maintain
Porsche is 220hp/t vs yaris 200hp/t so the Porsche should feel a bit faster unless breaking traction and with better aerodynamics will help a bit at high speed

Isn't it interesting that just 2 weeks later on the same strip the very same Cayman manages 13.3 seconds in the quarter mile, (a full 1.3 seconds faster), with the same driver. So it would have comfortably beat the Yaris by a full 1.1 seconds if it had been launched properly in this race. Conclusion: Either the driver was deliberately not driving the Cayman properly so as to not show up the Yaris, or he learned to launch the Cayman properly (there's no way conditions - which were almost identical on both days - would make a 1.3 second difference). Given he's an experienced race driver i'll leave you all to draw your own conclusion as to which it was. czcams.com/video/06xUihCdty8/video.html

It's impressive you managed to run a 14.6 1/4 mile in a 718 Cayman. Impressive in that it must have taken *many* takes to go that slowly, barely faster than a 1999 Boxster with 200hp and a 5 speed manual gearbox. But whatever was necessary to show the Yaris beating the Porsche I guess. This whole test is ludicrously staged. There's *no way* a GR yaris is pulling football fields (that gap at 1:21 is at least 500ft) on a 718 from a roll, especially when just before we are shown the Porsche actually catching the Yaris towards the end of the 1/4 mile race.
