- 2017’s Get Out has been a watershed moment for the horror genre. Jordan’s Peele’s movie was fresh, bold, and provocative, and it has gotten moviegoers excited about what the genre has in store for them this year.
John Krasinski made his directorial debut in the genre with the post-apocalyptic horror film A Quiet Place, and acclaimed actor Toni Collette also made her horror film debut with a gripping performance in Hereditary. Will we be seeing more A-list stars returning to horror?
Hollywood does get trendy, and if that’s the case, we might be seeing a huge shift in horror movie making. But for now, here are the best horror movies of 2018.

Honestly it kinda sucks that Hereditary was viewed differently by the public
They have grown too acustomed to jumpscares, monsters, and ghosts
It was good movie and may become a classic in the future
True!!!
BiyikFrostDiaz I think the genre of horror is the hardest. A horror movie is not a gore fest in my opinion, I think a horror movie is about addressing what’s behind the vail of reality and what can be brought forth from it, subtly manoeuvring the watchers emotion, building tension slowly until the watcher is dreading, but yet begging for a scare to relieve them of their ever growing anxiety. For me Hereditary nailed it. A superb movie in my opinion. I also loved The Babadook.
@@sambawomen excellent analogy and I also liked the babadook.
Horror is subjective as I have leaning more to suspenseful and slow burn films.
BiyikFrostDiaz Thanks :)... Yes it certainly is a subjective genre. It’s one of my favourites, unfortunately one has to watch a whole heap of shit to find a good one; finding a great writer and director for this genre is like searching for the holy grail. 😂
I just saw I used te word “vail” instead of “veil”, still kinda works though 😆
Oh and if you have any recommendations that would be much appreciated. I’m in bed bored recovering from being ill so I’m just watching movies all day 😁
What do people keep calling Upgrade a horror film? It's an awesome film, but it's not horror. It's just dark sci-fi like Robocop or Dredd.
I think that it’s technically considered a body horror
But nowadays anything gory tends to be labeled as horror unfortunately
I guess people group it in with the genre since it ended like a horror film.
thanks to black mirror, people assume anything involving technology being bad = horror.
Because stupid, that's why. They used to call Eraser Head one of the best horror movies lol
A movie can be sci fi and horror at the same time, see aliens for example. There's not much more horrifying than becoming a helpless passenger in your own body, whether it's die to old school demonic possession or an evil AI.
The Annihilation talking bear zombie creeps me the hell out when I hear it
Outdoors Life I’ve seen that movie several times. And still freaks me out
Outdoors Life such an awesome and creppy scene
And it was after that scene that the film went off the deep end and became an arthouse bore.
Annihilation is my all female cast Ghost Busters, or at least what it could had been.
Good flick
The camera angles in the action sequences of Upgrade really set it apart from any other film like it. You wouldnt really think those angles would fit in with a mostly serious movie but that added with the humor and overall tone and plot make it my favorite of 2018
Oh my God! I am so happy Mandy made it in to your 2018 list! Your description was spot on. People are just going to have to watch it.
Overlord was a surprisingly good movie.
Syfi Freak!!!!!! Meh
LOVED every minute of it as well. I dont understand the hate.
@@rupman27isback Have yet to watch it but I tried Mandy, couldn't stand 10 mins. Artistic for some. messy for me.
guitarman0365 trust me man i went in with the lowest expectations possible and came out thinking “that was a good movie”
I want to watch it, but....watch "Frankenstein's Army" on Amazon Prime and tell me what you think.
Upgrade isn't horror.
Not even one, slight, tiny, infinitesimal, iota of a partial-fraction of a scant shadow of a bit. (But CryptTV ran ads for it on their channel for some reason, so maybe that has something to do with it. 🤔)
It's technically body horror but should just be classified as sci fi
Seems like a blunt copy of adam jensen.
Exactly. How do ppl not be able to tell the difference? Horror is supposed to be mostly fictional. Anybody with a knife is horror now. Smfh
Hereditary was quite good. Very disturbing!
Hereditary was the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. IT WAS GREAT!!
Coming from a major studio, Annihilation was ignored by the mass audience who were still gaga over Jumanji, The Greatest Showman, and Black Panther.
Very nicely narrated video, great job looper
I'm confused; what's the video's preview image from?
Upgrade was one of my favorite movies of the year
I do hope they make part 2 of this Sci-fi/action/thriller and a pinch of horror movie
Same here
@@PhillipLemmon That doesn't star Tom Hardy 😂
Phillip Lemmon what are you on about? Tom hardy is not in upgrade , the actor is Logan Marshall Green🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@PhillipLemmon no that actor looks like tom hardy just see the cast i was even shocked to know that he was not tom hardy 😂😂
Great freaking list! Pretty much all of these movies I've seen and loved!
Annihilation is an updated version of H.P.Lovecraft's story, "Colour Out Of Space".
Ghost Stories :: One of the Best anthology horror movie I've seen... 🎟
Loved the performance of each character in the movie...so glad I didn't miss this movie! 🎥
Annihalation is one of the most underrated horror films of the 2000s
2010s you mean
Perhaps part of the split over Suspiria was because moviegoers are sick to death of classic movies being remade as cash-grabs on nostalgia.
I totally agree witth you...
And not just remade, but _reimagined_ (where someone says, "hey, remember this popular movie? how about I take it and make a completely different movie and pretend it's the same thing and assume people will like that?"). ¬_¬
I guess that Spielberg West side story wil sadly follow this path…
the new Suspiria is nothiing like the original. the only similarities are character names
It’s not a cash grab, and it’s not a remake...
It was nice seeing some of your content in between all of the commercials.
I like the other background music y’all use it gets me hyped, not to excited about this new one
Idk why I keep coming back to this video lol I search “horror movies” and click this one every time even though I know I’ve seen it
is there anywhere i can watch overlord ? link plz
A Quiet Place, Hereditary and Halloween were seen by everyone, the rest on this list were little seen
Could someone please tell me what the background music is?
Quiet Place was refreshing. But I cannot get over the end. I could think of 20 ways to avoid that end
Shit I watched 30 minutes or so and was bored to death, I don't think I'll ever finish it
can anyone ID the movie from the first few frames where a guy grabs someone out of a hole and flings them across the floor?
Nice 😀
As a Fan of the Horror Genre for over 34 years I can Honestly say Hereditary was the best Horror film of 2018..if not the best Horror film in the past 10 years...hands down. Fact.
1.Hereditary
2.Halloween
3.Jigsaw
What movie is the video cover picture girl from?
HE NEVER DIED needs a part 2 and needs to be expanded on greatly!
Whats the name of the movie from the first two secounds?
Whats the name of the movie at 00:01... Anybody PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz
THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT........... is disfuckingturbing and not listed.
Overlord, Upgrade and Annihilation went under my radar. Never heard of them!
My favorites were Halloween (2018) and The Hereditary.. although I haven't seen Overlord, and the new Suspiria
From which movie is the image of the video?
"Truth or Dare"
after the exorcist 1973, hereditary is something I consider cult classic!
The car sequence and the climax of hereditary still give me sleepless nights even after months
The head was the only amusing thing about that movie; I was surprised that they actually did that. The rest of the story was okay, but the pacing was so slow it felt more like a chore to sit through the movie.
Halloween was the best the return of one of the greatest horror villains of all time was exiting. Michael was scary again and it brag that vibe that original fans of the franchise love.
Does anyone know where I can see ghost stories? I can’t find it anywhere
MjauDuuude try Moviesjoy or Flixtor✌️
"Director, co-writer and star" - never a good combo : D
You should mention if these videos are available on certain streaming services
Hey now Bright was GREAT! I loved that it was an original.
Sweet, new movies to watch
You never know about Nicolas Cage movies any more but MANDY is a brilliant mash-up of Evil Dead/Hellraiser/Manson Family/Heavy Metal magazine animation, etc., filled with drugs and delightfully extreme gore.
I love horror anthology films, there are many and I thought it’s regaining popularity.
'Upgrade' was Sci-Fi but definitely not a Horror flick.
So who’s the woman in the still photo and from which movie?
I saw *Upgrade* ....admittedly,it was its trailer, which suggested "action flick" rather than "horror",that lured me in....I wasn't expecting it to end the way it did,but it made perfect sense.
As a 30+ year horror fan I have to admit to being a snob of horror movie ‘remakes’ & ‘parts 2/3/4/5 etc’...but the bar of new horror directors have been so excitingly high!(Ex: Jordan peele)... I’ve seen the original Suspiria & Halloween of course but I may have to bite the bullet & check out their remakes/part ?
Hereditary/Cargo/A Quiet Place were excellent movies! I’ll have to check out the rest on the list. It’s an exciting time in horror. Btw, horror is not just about jump scares & gore(those are cheap easy tricks). It’s about imagination & the unexpected(now that’s true horror!)
Upgrade was one of my favourite movies this year. Fantastic film.
A quiet place made a lot of money and got all of its budget back in the first weekend it was out
I’ll finally get to watch Suspiria over the weekend. So exited.
How was your expectations was it good entertaining bad horrible
I only saw two movies on this list: Annihilation and Upgrade. And I loved both of these! I hear Overlord is very entertaining as well.
I did not like Annihilation. I did not like A Quiet Place. I do want to see the Suspiria remake as well as Ghost Stories and Overlord
Nice
Ghost stories is genuinely one of my favourite films.
I need to see the last Halloween. I watched the rest of them.
Better title: "Some movies that came out this year."
Prey At Night
Whats that first one when he trows the kid?
I saw annihilation, A Quiet Place & Mandy. All 3 brilliant movies
Yep, Cargo and I Annihilation are awsome.
Please tell me from what movie the first footage of a woman who is pulling hair ... Thanks
Overlord
The real horror was these damn adds every two minutes.
didn't drop my jaw when watching any of those
Upgrade was a horror movie?
That god-damned screaming bear in Annihilation STILL gives me the chills...
ooohhh!, hereditary, tough. 2018 I love you. (too many good movies in different genre, hard to take all in). I was worried and sad at first, coz this is the year without GOT. Things got turn around for the better. And also I love the new Titans series.
I came here for the possibility of finding something new to watch.... I've watched all of these.
*sound of silence*
What about Absentia. I loved that movie
4:27 Wildling went from Interesting premise to WTF in a short time
Cargo was a genuinely great movie. I enjoyed the hell out of it
I have not seen Annihilation. But i read it and the second book of the trilogy. It was odd story but fascinating. The second book was just strait out weird, enough so that i had no desire to get the third book at all. I was surprised when i heard the making it a movie.
After watching the movie I got the trilogy, and read the whole thing they are both weird. ;)
Edward Dore, you powered on to the third book. That is a serious commitment to a story line. So, was there a point to it. Did the story make any sense at the end?
yes, and no lol. but I figured since I read the first two, might as well finish the trilogy
@@edwarddore7617 what are the 3 books in the trilogy?
it's called the Southern Reach trilogy, wild stuff
Hey, has anyone seen the similarities between Upgrade and Venom?
Overlord sounds like Castle Wolfenstein
I've seen over 120 new films this year, and Wilding is easily in my bottom 3. I agree with most of the others though.
Suspiria and Hereditary, modern classics!!!
I loved Annihilation but as soon as she got to the lighthouse...I just have no clue. I do not get the ending AT ALL (which surprisingly didn’t ruin the movie for me, because it was such an enjoyable ride getting there). But yeah, if anybody can help me out here, I’d really appreciate it.
As far as I can tell I think they were implying that the alien lifeform didn't have an agenda, we assume It would from a human perspective, but it's alien so how could we understand it, I read the book trilogy after watching the movie, It's still a bit ambiguous, and confusing but different
I didn't like the movie cause the director did not convey a clear and concise story and then blames the viewer for being too dumb to not understand, and that is why it didn't go over to well at the box office. It's just lazy writing and storytelling if the mass of the audience doesn't get what you're trying to say doesn't mean you are intellectually superior.
The movie is a two part analogy about cancer. How people deal with being diagnosed and inevitably die. You can see that each of the characters attitudes throughout. IIRC throughout the deaths 1. person acts strong throughout and tries her best to talk everyone up and has an almost motherly persona before getting killed by the bear. 2. the other is angered at the fact of the state she is in and is resentful to everyone around her. 3. She accepts her fate and dies (or commits suicide to not deal with the pain anymore) 4. Is sarcastic and reckless because she is terminal but fights until the bitter end and does not want to die until certain aspects of her life are fulfilled. And the last is kind of a toss up (again lazy writing) she either overcomes the cancer and is the survivor out of the bunch, or becomes cancer herself and spreads it throughout.
The second part is kinda what Edward Dore was saying cancer itself is not maligned doesn't have an agenda, it's just trying its best to survive and spread its genes the only way it knows how.
Jack Frost Wow, that’s a very interesting take. My mother died of cancer a year ago. Maybe I should rewatch the film!
I don't think the writing is necessarily lazy, the book trilogy was ambiguous, and confusing at times, I think they were just trying to convey that in the movie, I enjoyed the movie so I bought the trilogy on Amazon, I do feel the books were better, although I enjoyed the movie on its own, not an easy series to translate to a movie, you also didn't always know what was going on in the books either, which was deliberate
@@jackfrost8000 Another popular interpretation is the theme of self destruction - how people harm themselves in various ways despite their best interests. This is shown in every character in different ways. The analogy of cancer is woven into it since even our very generic makeup seems predestined for self destruction. And there were other different interpretations such as how one battles depression. Part of why this movie has *good* writing is because the viewing experience was so unique to every person. The film was created in an ambiguous way such that each interpretation seems to have some degree of validity
How high do you guys set your radars?
Hereditary and A Quit Place were insanely good
My tops of 2018: Incident in a Ghost Land, Hereditary, Pyewacket, Mandy, Terrifier....what else?
Good list. There's also one film that is a true cult classic that no one ever talks about. Saw it the other night. Haven't been that impressed with a horror film in a long time. It's called The Exorcist. Actually was made in 1973, wayyyy ahead of its time. You should add that to the list.
There was a Nicholas Cage marathon at the Melbourne International Film Festival with Mandy playing as the opening film. Not sure if anyone ran up and down the theatre saying I'm a vampire! I'm a vampire! I'm a vampire!
Loved Ghost Stories.
I loved Hereditary but my favourite horror movie of this decade is still Annihilation. It did not disappoint me . My favourite in the previous decade was The Mist. In the 90's it was Exorcist 3 (Legion), in the 80's and also my all time favourite was The Thing. In the 70's it was Dawn of the Dead, in the ,60's it may of been Night of the living dead or perhaps Rosemary's baby :)
i feel like the upgrade premise could be something from black mirror
I'm a big fan of Black Mirror, I must see this a movie immediately! By the way I hate sand too.
A quiet place is very suspenseful which i love, hereditary has great performances and very disturbing imagery, halloween is halloween, nothing new to see there but the final confrontation is midly entertaining to watch. I'm looking forward to suspiria, don't know anything about the rest.
Saw all but one of these... in a theater... because public awareness was high.
Hereditary is hands down the best one.on this list
I have watched hereditary 9 times and that movie still messes with me no matter how outlandish the ending was.
Upgrade’s ending was both kind of nice and kind of horrifying
I haven't seen the Suspiria remake yet, and after this, I don't think I will. The original was colourful and beautiful looking, while still being suspenseful. Why is this one dark and gray?
Only like 2 of these flew under people's radar
The Quiet Place is Gold
Who is the actress on the cover of this video? I don’t think she is in any of the movies discussed.
What is the movie at 0:01 - 0:02 ??????
+1
The Endless? That one was most certainly a diamond in the rough.
The only good thing about _The Endless_ was its premise; the actual execution wasn't good. They could/should have cut 75% of the movie and distilled it down to a short-film of just the parts that served the primary sci-fi aspect of the story because everything else was tedious filler. (This is actually true of a lot of low-budget movies. ¬_¬)
It wasn't a perfect movie, but over all in I enjoyed it, need to watch it's "prequel"
Saw Cargo when Netflix released it. I wouldn't call it a horror movie nor zombie gene movie. It is a thing onto it's self. A father trying to save/preserve his child. It was a gut wrenching experience to see for many reasons. I highly recommend watching.
Overlord was the best movie of 2018
Upgrade is Sci-fi with some gore in the mix.
