This Nokia 41MP Shooter Beats Today's Smartphones

  • Smartphone camera development has come a long way but do we really see that much improvement? I am exploring this old Nokia Lumia 1020 from 2013, and I thought the camera can still deliver results that can surpass some of the greatest and latest smartphone cameras today. I found one at a good price, nabbed it and did some shutter therapy, treating the smartphone like an actual camera!

    The 1020 was good - nice to see it acknowledged. My problem with it was speed - the camera application was shockingly slow, at startup, general operation. None of these were problems with the 808 - the camera application on that was fantastic, quick to start up, focus was faster - you could start the 808 camera, take a photo and have the phone back in your pocket before the 1020 had even opened the camera application.
    For me the 808 had a WAY better camera overall, and it is the one that I do truly miss. The presets that were quickly accessible were fantastic (I had one set for vibrant/5mp, another set for high contrast B&W, and the last for full resolution iirc). And one of the high contrast B&W shots is my all time favourite picture of my sons on the beach with the sun setting behind them.
    Love the channel, and absolutely love your enthusiasm for photography!

    This Nokia was one of the smartphones that wanted to push the camera in phones by having a bigger sensor, better lens, buttons and layout that function as a camera. Only Sony Xperia is still focused heavy on the ergonomics suitable to make photos by having a dedicated button for shutter.
    The original Nokia is not making phones, but they license their name to HMD, who make Nokia branded phones using Android. Back then I wanted to buy this phone simply for the camera module.

The majority of my cameras fall into the 24 mp range, the 4/3 cameras are 20mp. I have a Pentax K1 MKII that has a 36 mp sensor and a Fujifilm XT5 and XH2 with 40mp sensor, when Fujifilm released the 40mp sensor many photographers felt that this was pushing the APSC sensor to far and that low light and dynamic range would suffer, yet a smartphone has a much smaller sensor and has the same or more Mp and no one makes a negative comment about this, what's your thoughts about this.

    @amermeleitor Před 5 měsíci +1

    Two things:
    - Can you shoot raw with the Lumia 1020? Do you know about the bit depth of the raw output? Most today sensors for smartphones only output 10bit raw and some high end ones output 12bit. That's because speed, to blend HDR and tone mapping as fast as possible.
    - Today phones are better in too many ways. If you dislike the "smartphone look" just shoot raw with a third party app, an Android phone, API Camera2 enabled, so the app will deliver you the "clean" raw sensor output. I use some cheapo or free apps that are great (ProShot, ProCamX, MotionCam, Firstlight, GCam, etc).

    • @robinwong

    • @amermeleitor
      @amermeleitor Před 5 měsíci

      @@yash_kambli I disagree. You are talking about the end result and the most part of it is the processing algorithms. You can get very different results with other camera app that process the raw information in a different way. The sensors are now far better than the one in the Lumia. The lenses not so much, but the high end phones have very good ones.

    • @avinashrai11141
      @avinashrai11141 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Sorry. But shooting Raw on smartphone is too much pain. Most phones Raw files aren’t free from fake processing, they do have fake processing baked in and you can’t do much about that. And believe me lumia 1020 takes much more detailed images in most scenes compared to my iphone 13 and S23 ultra. Fact is fact, you have to accept it that modern smartphones cameras are less of a camera more of a graphics generative app. First time I have noticed that on my galaxy s7 which captured human hair like painted metal wire. Crazy

      @@avinashrai11141 all raw files, from cameras and phones, have processing in it. Your opinion about raw quality in smartphones don't seem to agree with the evidence. Just try other processing algorithms, being sure about using the API Camera2. The MotionCam one is very good, you can cook the raw in your way and like (saturation, sharpness, level of HDR, tint, contrast, warmth, etc). Other apps can do it too. And you can shoot rawDNG video too, as a great bonus.

    My first smartphone! My Fuji Finepix bridge camera was annoying me, so I thought I might kill two birds with one stone. Ironically this phone then persuaded me that for shooting animals - even livestock chilling in a field - I needed a 'proper' camera with some kind of telephoto lens. 😄
    It wasn't bad, though. Among other things I kind of miss the Windows tiles UI.
    (By the way, they came in colours other than acid yellow 😆)

      I chose the yellow, because I wanted the attention! Kidding, we did not have any choice here in the used market

    Sadly, AT&T in the US pushed an upgrade that disabled the camera. The camera appeared to work but no photo was recorded. No apology - no fix offered.
