I just want to tell you that I was gifted a kiln and wheel from someone randomly and I learned how to throw entirely by watching your videos and…I’m not doing too shabby. My husband had a potter friend he knows come and see my work (so far just bowls, mugs and candle vessels) and he said “I don’t think there’s anything I can teach her she is doing way better than I ever did when I started.” … Totally Donte University and I’m pretty freaking proud.
You are the absolute perfect teacher for the ADHD students.
I could maybe use some more on the rib because I just eff my ish up with it. No smooth just moosh. If you feel like making another video ;)
    Thank you!!!!

I just signed up for a college level Intro to Wheel Throwing with no previous experience. The class body is about 12 students with only 1 instructor which limits the amount of attention each student is able to obtain. Your videos are so much more helpful than the class. I really appreciate all the effort you put into these. Thank you!!!! I look forward to improving my wheel throwing techniques with the use of your videos.

Ikr?! I threw pottery as a child. My great-grandfather taught me to throw on a kick wheel. (Native American & family name Potter). He & my grandmother had a pottery studio. After he passed, Gram’s health deteriorated until she passed. I didn’t return to potting until about 24yrs ago until I had to leave it behind again. About a month ago, dh cleared me space in the barn, which is now my studio. I’m having to relearn; hwr, the upside of that is that I have my own wheel. It shocked the heck out of me when I looked up my wheel to see what they cost today. My Shimpo RK Whisper is $1400-$1500 today. It was like $500 when I bought mine.
Hang in there. Pottery seems to follow me no matter what life brings. ☺️😉

I'm 28 I just started learning to throw at my local pottery classes, I always mess up and my cups were wrecked but after seeing how you pull up by using both hands kinda like chokeing it , I do that now and it can fix my cups so i can just cut the wrecked rim and I'll have a reasonably not shitty cup so thanks , my teacher didn't show us that .

Only a newbie to clay throwing. We are being given three weeks to muck around to get a sense of the clay. I like the way we have been doing it because it means i can look at what is happening as i am working with the wheel. I have learnt a lot in my perceived experimental pots. I got a good compression of the clay, and once the pot hit six inches! Then collapsed. Looking forward to when we get into it next term. Still it is good to watch the videos. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Dante!
I’ve been watching your videos for quite a few years now, on and off, and I do enjoy your style. Since the pandemic, I’ve mostly been doing hand building at home. I’m about to return to the wheel so I watched this one when it popped up.
My main comment is that near the beginning you were saying that we should not move the hands but move the elbows. Your elbows were staying perfectly stationary, braced on your thighs. Perhaps it would be clearer if you said move the forearms from the elbows, so the elbow is actually a hinge.
Keeping the wrist straight is certainly important!
Thanks for your spirited videos, from another Dirty Potter!

I have a project idea for ya teach. See, I'm a sweet tea swilling fool. I drink it all year long. I usually use quart canning jars because they are kinda perfect for it. Now that I'm a mud puppy, I am thinking how I can improve on the whole experience. This summer I am investigating what does and doesn't work. I'm thinking attached coaster/sweat catcher.

its funny how, as a machinist, i hear you describe "feed and speed" (rate of movement vs rate of rotation)... and yet... it took soooooo many tries to get a crappy cup, but once i got a cutting tool. now this is machining, smooth as a babies bottom.... just dont look inside. pottery is actually excellent for anyone who wants to use a lathe, the only difference is material. and steel lathes can kill you... that's something.
