  • This is part of the new wheel series I am working on this summer! I am remaking my wheel videos on my new SKUTT wheel!!! Here is a link to my wheel- available from most good pottery suppliers. skutt.com/products-page/potte...
    The video is focused on the pulling and thinning of the wall. I show how to RECENTER the wall, and if you would like more detailed information on that, check out this slightly older video which also has a pdf graphic for your studio wall! • Centering Clay and Rec...
    If you did not previously master centering, you will want to watch my former video on centering here! • Wheel Throwing Series,...
    One trick I show in this presentation is using the left thumb as a jig. By holding the left thumb, and controlling the thumb with the right hand, I find my students have greater success getting their dropped middles centered. I tell my students they all need to find the way that works best for them. I encourage them to hold the outside of the wall with their left hand as they pull open the wall with their right hand. This helps keep the wall stable and of even thickness.
    Just remember, you must always have pressure from all sides, top, side, (bottom=bat) and if opened, the interior when you are trying to center. If you remove pressure from any one of those areas, the off centered clay will move to the place of least resistance, and will stay off centered.
    My new series will offer new videos with tips and tricks to successfully wheel throw pieces- from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I will be offering a good deal of EXPLANATION within the videos to help people understand the mechanics of why things work the way they do! I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. In these videos in my series, I will try to distill my best tips I have learned from my successes and failures, and my students' struggles as well. Two things have led me to becoming the potter I am today. Countless hours of making pots, (and explaining how to make pots), and understanding and learning from my failures when pots didn’t work out! These are the things I want to share with you- to help YOU become a better potter!

    I am in a partnership with Skutt - as they sent me the new wheel to use for the videos! I am not receiving any compensation from them beyond the wheel.

    This is a great series. I've got some experience, but it's been a while since I've learned all the important basics. I'm about to teach my daughter how to throw on the wheel and I was looking exactly four this.

    Hello, this is the best series I have seen on CZcams about wheel throwing! I am a maths teacher in Turkey learning pottery at the moment. And I have been enjoying your videos very much. Would you make a video about how long one should practice each of these methods before moving on to another one and what sort of other practices we can do. Thanks!

    New to pottery and taking classes. You explain so well and it's much appreciate and SO helpful.
    Question - how much clay should a new person start with to practice? 1LB?

      I usually have my kids start with the size of an orange- or fist sized- like 1 1/4 lbs perhaps? That way it is less likely to generate too much recycle! If you have a flop, try to eliminate as much slip as possible and set it aside for an hour or so then it can be wedged again!

    I am still struggling on pulling the walls. I am too gentle. I have watched this video many times. I still can't seem to pull up without throwing off the centre or too much pressur to cause it to be too thin

    How thick should the completed cylinder wall be? I would imagine a mug has a generally preferred thickness for drinking. Not as important if a vase. Thank you

      Hi Tracy! Sorry for the delay! I like my walls to be a little thinner than 1/4". I'd approximate 3/16". :)

    I can't figure something out... I earlier videos it says if you're right handed you should go clockwise but... Is this going counter clockwise??? I just practiced tonight and I'm right handed and I had a lot more luck going counterclockwise also... I'm so confused 😅

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  Před rokem

      In earlier videos I should have always said counter clockwise for right handed!! I’d only recommend clockwise for left handed! In the centering video I go into a bit of the difference between the left and right hand rotation. :)

    What cloth is being used under the bat and why?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  Před 2 lety

      It is called a bat mate. It helps to prevent be bat from jiggling. I talk more about it in the preparatory video for the wheel here at 10 minutes.czcams.com/video/AAd74qpKnPE/video.html
