Absolutely spot on, all the greatest managers had the ability to communicate clearly and simply and had the knack of finding the right choice of words to make their message resonate with the players.

Great man,I used to hate Forest-knocking us out of the the european cup etc,but listening to him here his character,honesty and intelligence just shines through,never forgotten;real old school outlook that's sadly missing a lot today.
One of the best managers for me. I love how he saw life and how straight forward and honest his answers were. I really felt for Cloughie when pride got the better of him in regard to his relationship with Peter Taylor. Friendship is one of the most precious things in this world and no matter what the cost in your pride you should keep it and hold on to it.. Seeing Brian realise this after Peter's death was very sad and it raised my awareness of what is truly precious in life.
A class act no mistake. Had the good grace not to trash Don Revie despite Frost provoking him and to voice his opinions clearly and concisely. Compare that to today’s polished political management who are so scared in case they say the wrong thing. He’s missed terribly

Gosh, I’m not into football - in fact I couldn’t give two hoots about it - but this interview is riveting. The main standout is Cloughie’s integrity - I might be wrong but he strikes me as being a very decent man.
I think he is dead honest. I do believe him when he implies that he likes/respects people, and needs them to be Good, appreciates sincerity... I think he was a real force for good, even if he rubbed some people up the wrong way. It is not ego but confidence that he had and we need people to be thoughtful and confident. As a Nottingham dweller, I was grateful he came to Forest soon after this interview :)

My fella got some extra good tickets off an exec friend of his, the whole time I was awe struck, not daring to speak! I never said a word to him, which I deeply regret. I met him when I was a kid in the late 70’s. He was watching an amateur league football match and I asked for his autograph. He told me to wait until half time ! 😂 To be fair to him, I did and he gave me his autograph and was very friendly. Enigmatic genius and one of a kind. I wish he was still around.

One of my favourite cloughy quotes is one not often cited anywhere and its as deep as they come. "You can talk and talk and talk about your profession, but then you've got to go and do it. It's no good trying to convince someone you're right, you've got to provide the example and then talk about it". Lost on many football pundits in the game today who are stealing a living.

He claimed that Lingard going to Forest was about money,, and in the very same breath, then went on to claim he would have got more money at West Ham. Think about that for a second, the total contradiction in one breath - because by definition, if that was true, then by definition Lingards move couldnt have been about the money. It's the ilk of these people who simply dont think before they talk, that should be washed away so that the rest of us can have some time to think about and enjoy the game. So much noise to cut through. ....and then dont get me started about agents. I could rant about those guys all day and a week!

He actually DOES know how to provide examples to talk about, but what clough was driving at, is that its not enough to have opinions on the game and try to convince everyone your opinion are right, what he was driving at is that you shouldnt get to sit in a studio and tell people how the gane should be played until you've got out onto a training pitch and got 11 guys to play in a way that proves you are right. What happened when Neville tried to do that? He bombed. He went to Valencia and proved he couldnt do it. I feel a bit bad for using him as the classic example because I really like the bloke, but at the end of the day he is the archetypal example of what clough was talking abuot. Gary Neville has for years tried to talk to people about how football should be played, but when given the chance to go out and actually do it, rather than talk about it, he completely flopped it. In Neville's defence, he'll readily admit this to be the case, he doesn't shirk it. Fair play to him for at least trying to go out and provide an example rather than just talk the talk, but thats exactly what Clough was getting at. Provide the example....win something.....get 11 lads to run through brick walls for you......THEN sit in a studio and tell people how it should be done once you've shown how its done.

To do what he did at Leeds was impressive. He tried to get them to play proper football despite being winners already. He had it easy, didn't even need to change things but tried to. No manager now would do this now.
he not only tried to get Leeds to stop being a dirty team - but was faced with the whole team getting too old at the same time - signed McGovern who went on to great things at Forest ..Beckenbauer thought he was very underated later at Forest ....
The greatest Clough moment i ever saw was the press conference when Trevor Francis signed for Forest. Friday night, Francis just signed, the press are interviewing him. Clough and Taylor are sitting in on it. Francis is answering all the press questions then one guy asks, “Trevor, when do you think you'll play your first game for Nottingham Forest?” Quick as a flash, before Francis could answer, Cloughie immediatlely says, “When i pick 'im!”

My admiration for Brian has always been his want to provoke thought, not just to be a provocateur. Simply magnificent and brilliant man.
As a United fan, I can acknowledge how brilliant SAF has been...and how almost impossible it is to fathom someone being as or more successful with MUCH less resources. Titan.
One of my favourite cloughy quotes is one not often cited anywhere and its as deep as they come.

@@stevebell4853 Exactly! So much of this “what an EXTREME disappointment” without actually delving in on how/why. It’s almost like they’re already set on what they’ll say before the match and just hammer the point in to place post match.
@@CronoXpono My personal annoyance is pundits who clearly should not be working in the game but who seem to think their opinions are vital to the game. I was given a recent example by Glen Johnson. He claimed that Lingard going to Forest was about money,, and in the very same breath, then went on to claim he would have got more money at West Ham. Think about that for a second, the total contradiction in one breath - because by definition, if that was true, then by definition Lingards move couldnt have been about the money. It's the ilk of these people who simply dont think before they talk, that should be washed away so that the rest of us can have some time to think about and enjoy the game. So much noise to cut through.
....and then dont get me started about agents. I could rant about those guys all day and a week!
@@CronoXpono Another really good example of that quote by clough was Gary Neville. Now dont get me wrong, I really really like Neville. He actually DOES know how to provide examples to talk about, but what clough was driving at, is that its not enough to have opinions on the game and try to convince everyone your opinion are right, what he was driving at is that you shouldnt get to sit in a studio and tell people how the gane should be played until you've got out onto a training pitch and got 11 guys to play in a way that proves you are right. What happened when Neville tried to do that? He bombed. He went to Valencia and proved he couldnt do it. I feel a bit bad for using him as the classic example because I really like the bloke, but at the end of the day he is the archetypal example of what clough was talking abuot. Gary Neville has for years tried to talk to people about how football should be played, but when given the chance to go out and actually do it, rather than talk about it, he completely flopped it. In Neville's defence, he'll readily admit this to be the case, he doesn't shirk it. Fair play to him for at least trying to go out and provide an example rather than just talk the talk, but thats exactly what Clough was getting at. Provide the example....win something.....get 11 lads to run through brick walls for you......THEN sit in a studio and tell people how it should be done once you've shown how its done.

@@wanwandokko I am a Liverpool fan (since the 70s) Cloughies forest knocked my beloved Liverpool team out of the European cup but ... I still wanted Forest to win it !!! They were a great team for that 2/3 period just like Liverpool

As I personally remember his great Nottingham Forest side you could never doubt his football abilities . Watching this interview I am even more impressed by his personality and his views . maybe too honest to ever get the England job . We will never know if he could have done anything with England
I think he would. Even a weaker forest side in the 80s reached Cup semis and finals. He wouldve crafted the team around Hoddle.

This man’s words are golden and timeless which are priceless even now in 2023. I believe that he could have succeeded in any business venture. I never tire of hearing him speak. RIP Mr Clough.
To do what he did at Leeds was impressive. He tried to get them to play proper football despite being winners already. He had it easy, didn't even need to change things but tried to. No manager now would do this now.
he not only tried to get Leeds to stop being a dirty team - but was faced with the whole team getting too old at the same time - signed McGovern who went on to great things at Forest ..Beckenbauer thought he was very underated later at Forest ....

The greatest Clough moment i ever saw was the press conference when Trevor Francis signed for Forest. Friday night, Francis just signed, the press are interviewing him. Clough and Taylor are sitting in on it. Francis is answering all the press questions then one guy asks, “Trevor, when do you think you'll play your first game for Nottingham Forest?” Quick as a flash, before Francis could answer, Cloughie immediatlely says, “When i pick 'im!”

He was a bit before my time, but watching this and other interviews he was so sharp, intelligent and insightful. He had his flaws for sure, but he was ahead of his time in an age of footballing

What a great man and football manager. One of my heroes in the game and in life. He'd be the first on my invitation list to a dinner party round mine. I'm a Leeds United fan who truly believes he would have made Leeds unbeatable given more time there. Maybe a lot of Leeds fans disagree and that's fine but I think we missed a trick there. Sadly missed Mr Brian Clough

From what I can remember my mates never had anything like these problems with their respective RD 200 & 400 ,they seemed very reliable at the time ( it was a VERY long time ago )
