- I talked about this one a little bit in a previous video from several years ago, but it really needed its own vid for a review because it's awesome. I forgot to mention the sequel, but I'd like to give that game its own video as well...
New SNES-related video every Tuesday, and something else (Genesis, Game Boy, whatever) on Thursdays

"Metal Slug crossed with Pocky & Rocky" is the highest recommendation you could make, unless you had also mentioned specifically that the soundtrack includes the Amen break. This looks incredible!
---💚💛❤️---
Yessssss… as a junglist, this soundtrack is refreshing!
The sequel isnt quite as good but still fun
Junglist 4eva
He had my attention when he said Pocky and Rocky.
All I needed to know.
I love this channel because I sometimes get to be introduced to games I never knew I wanted to play. This is absolutely one of those times.
Same here. I would have never found half of the arcade gems without his channel.
One detail I find especially cool is how the game rewards you for getting close and personal with the foot soldiers. Consistently melee enemies, and you'll get bonus items that can further boost your score or aid you in the fight!
Both Shock Troopers games were absolute madness! I loved the hell out of both of them.
And you have to love the gameplay formula. Shock Troopers is what you get when you put Contra, Metal Slug, and the old Capcom shooter Mercs on the operating table and surgically graft them together. I'd love to see a modern updated version that plays as a twin stick.
there's 2 of them?! nice
SH2 could've been a masterpiece like SH1, but there's too much damn slowdown.
The SNK compilation on PS2 acts like a twin stick! Check it out if you have one
SH1 is a much better game than 2. It looks better and it plays better.
@@thetechn1que518 but 2 has Angel
Knockout game. Loved the Drum 'n' Bass infused soundtrack also. Timeless arcade classic, for sure.
i am always happy to discover retro games with DnB soundtracks!
Best Run & Gun ever made. So much fun.
sadly, I had never seen this one in arcade cabinets back in the day, but I absolutely fell in love with this game when I discovered it through emulation in the early 2000's. The game play is absolute chaos and I love it!
Was literally playing this last night on a generic portable arcade microswitched emulation machine.
Absolutely adore the NEOGEO.
it is so mythical... never seen an AES to date and probably never will as the prices for games are still insane.
However certainly played my fair share of MVS hardware.
Finally shock troopers 2 SUX!
Did it get an AES release? Or are they just conversions?
@@goatbone the other places to play it will be emulation not a conversion. I don't know if it got released for AES. If it did or did not is irrelevant as it is literally the same hardware, just cartridge shape per say.
Shock Troopers is shockingly fun to look at. There’s tons of features in its gameplay, and it looks just like Metal Slug mixed with Pocky and Rocky if they have guns.
One of THE best arcade games ever. So glad to see this getting covered.
I sat down and IMMEDIATELY played through the whole game after watching this. Such a fun playthrough!
Best controls in the genre. Great vid, Drunk!
I remember that we got this in Italy aorund mid 1998, our first question about it as kids was "C'mon, this game seems very old! We need polygons!".
Then, our first impression after we played it was always "C'mon, this game is awesome! I need more coins!".
True story.
Great review! I played this during my childhood once at a random arcade back in the day and I remember loving it. However, even though I've had this game burned into my memory for decades, I had actually forgotten the name of this game. So thank you, SNES Drunk, for finally putting a name to this game, so I can now go and play it once again! 😄
boy oh boy, I freaking love this game! SNK really knew how to do arcade gems!
Great to see this game getting some attention. It rules! It's the strafing that truly separates this from its competitors.
Truly one of the great underrated shooters! Glad to see it get some love!
What a coincidence. I've been on an SNK kick lately, and you pick one of my favorites.
This was a great game. I have it on the PC and PS2 from the SNK collection they put out. It's an excellent step in the run'n'gun genre starting with Commando.
Awesome review! Shock Troopers has a case for best overhead run-n-gun game of all time. It's 100% pure playable fun.
After I mastered both Shock Troopers games, I would on purposely take long to kill the bosses because them dying means the badass soundtracks would end. I still get goosebumps when facing the final boss in 2nd squad and sometimes I die a lot because I'm so entranced by the music 😂
I love this game so much! One of the best on Neo Geo!
A couple of years ago I started checking out the various NeoGeo titles they put on the eShop and this was always one of my favorites. Easy to pick up and play on a whim and pretend you're a kid again. Honestly didn't even think that it didn't come out til 1997 since it gives me those vibes I had when I was 7 or 8 in the early 90s absolutely eating up any and all solid arcade titles.
just a something you didn't mention that i think sets the game apart. when you attack an enemy close up, you will do a knife attack or a punch, similar to metal slug however in this game that always yields a power up which could be a weapon, a screen clearing gem or health. It's a great risk reward mechanic that really incentivizes getting better at the game and the health drops seem really generous for an arcade game of the time. Anyway good review, thanks for shining some light on one of my favorite games.
You can tell it's a SNK game by the soundtrack. That snippet you left at the end elicits nostalgia immediately.
I love how you ended the video with the classic SNK sound effect when someone inserts a coin
One of my favorites from the NeoGeo! The sheer chaos of this game is what keeps me coming back to it
It's also available on Switch in Hamsters Line up of arcade ports.
This game, the first 3 Metal Slug games ( I count 2/X as one game, fight me!), Garou: Mark of the Wolves, the Last Blade games and Sengoku 3 are by far my favorite SNK games of all that I have played.
It's better than the sequel, and the sequel it's also a good game! Also: Big Mama is the best character, the mother of Chuck Norris and Mr. T.
hey snes drunk, your videos help me calm my anxiety, so thank you so much for that
Holy cow, this game looks AWESOME!
I can't believe I missed this one entirely.
Good to see you're still around! By the way, I'm also in ABQ. On the west side.
One of my favorites thanks Snes drunk for promoting this one
Nice Video! I always like finding new arcade games I have never played before! Gotta try this out soon! Thanks Snes Drunk!
Looks very cool. As someone born in '92 who has emulated a long time, I really haven't used MAME enough
I love how you dive into 2 inches of water from about 300 feet in the air and get up like it's nothing
Whoa!!! How did I miss that at the rental store when I was young? My friends and I would have played this to death! (Stuff like this, “Mortal Kombat I & II”, “NBA Jam: Tournament Edition”, “Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball”, “Top Gear 2”, and, of course, “Mario Kart”).
What I really find funny is how you can often control which death animation a baddie will do based on how many bullets you soak into them. If they're still eating bullets, they're probably dead, and continuing to shoot them will make them explode. That really surprised me when I saw it for the first time.
I think of it as the ED209 effect. Its a really clever way to distract the player from progressing forward or directing firepower towards other adversaries while making the player more vulnerable to incoming fire (which actually seems mostly avoidable throughout the game). I don't know of too many other games, especially modern, that have a mechanic like that.
By far my favorite SNK game. So much fun and great replay value like you mentioned.
I played this game through once and thought it was excellent. I didn´t realize it has so much replay value back then
Definitely a game I first knew existed thanks to laundromat arcade machines.
Total length of video: 280 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 3 secs.
1.07% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
i miss this channel!!!
it found its way back into my feed! yay!
Excellent review thanks! I’m going to pick it up on Switch for a late spring break trip!
I’m a huge Metal Slug fan. Huge. So this is really appealing.
Thank you for another nice and short review and especially for the tip that it is available on Steam. I just got it and gonna play it now to get into Eastern mood.
This game!!! 😂 I remember being really intimidated by it in the arcade, but then I found it on an SNK collection for PS2 and I HAD to play it! Game did not disappoint - solid visuals, great sound, tight controls, and more replay value than you can shake a roll of quarters at. Buy a good port, kids - it's way cheaper than trying to play this in the arcade! 💰
Looks like something my brother and I would have an absolute blast playing
One of my favorite Neo Geo games. This is one of the most overlooked shoot 'em up games ever in my mind!
would you recommend the sequel too?
Always down for more arcade games I never saw. Thank you for keeping this going!
Love these games, both 1 and 2. They are on switch, too!
You had me at Metal Slug meets Pocky and Rocky.
Can't believe I'd never heard of this one. Thanks for review.
This looks good as hell dude!! Thank you for educating me
When I got into collecting Neo Geo, these were recommended to me and I got them for pretty reasonable prices at the time on the MVS.
I really like this one, and the sequel is also great... and while it looks nicer, there is something about it I can't put my finger on... but I don't like it as much as the first one.
I've never heard or seen this game before. I'm going to play it when I get home. 😂
Making Tuesdays and Thursdays great again
That art style is tremendous
Dang!
I wanna play this game again!
That does look really cool. It'd be easy to see why that would draw attention at an arcade.
I forget how nice Shock Troopers looked, especially compared to the garish pre renders they went with for the sequel...
This cab got so many quarters from me. This game is amazing, music and gameplay!
This game is such a blast. It's pretty much the best G.I. Joe game we ever got.
Except for GI JOE: the Arcade Game. ;)
My dad was on the team that helped localize this for U.S. markets. Same team that was working on prototype port for the Playstation (it ran slow, given the PS' poor 2D performance).
Part 1 is SO much better than 2
Cool review. Thanks for sharing. Gonna have to play.
Wishlisted on Steam now. Thanks for the share.
Great game; the music deserves special mention too!
An updated version of this would be great
I remember this cabinet, but never managed to get too far😅 I can't agree more with the recommendation. Also that Watchmen's reference was atomic ⚛️
graphics look (chef's kiss)
I used to play that one so much and I am still enjoying it 😎
God how I wish this and the sequel were on a collection.
Both games are available on Switch and Playstation 4.
love shock troopers, there are some good rom hacks of it too!
for what console?
A retro game store I used to frequent at had a Neo Geo MVS which just so happened to have this game installed and I would often go to this store JUST to play Shock troopers.
Quality game! I remember playing this in Ibiza as the bar we was in had this arcade cabinet and it was mental!
LOOOOOOVE Shock Troopers. This was the first game I bought on my Nintendo Switch and it was such a blast. Even tho i can beat it in 30 minutes with unlimited lives, it’s fun finding every possible path to take and trying out runs with every character. I’ve maybe replayed it close to 50 times and now I want to do another run!
oh shit! i will be sure to get that the Switch!
A great game, and always a joy to see it in an MVS down my local barcade. The sequel is... okay, just not as good, the pre-rendered look hasn't aged as well as good pixelwork.
There's an early version of the game that gives each character in team mode their own separate life bar instead of the shared one in the later version
While you can change to an alternate route midway, if you continue on the initial chosen route you'll have a brief dialogue from your characters, this is not shown if you change route
Aside from the different special weapons of each character, Maru, Southern Cross, and Big Mama are the 3 characters that have a double shot by default compared to everyone else's single shot, it is a noticeable bump up in damage even without any weapon pickups
Each character also moves at different speeds depending on the route. For example, Jackal moves a lot faster on Jungle, but slows down on Valley
Its also playable on Switch
Loved the hell out of this game back in the day, sad we only got one sequel in the franchise...
I actually just played thru the 2nd shock troopers a couple days ago. Good game. I like how if you hold the button you keep the same orientation but if you let off you can spin your character.
Great video! We need a 'In the Hunt' video review...
I’m so happy this is available to purchase as an ACA NeoGeo game on Switch. I just wish the second game didn’t have such brutal slowdown - both are still fun though.
Loaded up the PSP version on my nodded vita after watching this video. Great recommendation!
Every time i went to the arcades and saw a Neo Geo arcade machine, i knew it was gonna be good. Same with Capcom.
I played this in arcades. Loved it.
This is such a great Game, got it within Amazon Prime a few Years ago and was surprised, that SNK can do more than Fighting Games :P
Later i got a Mister and this is one of my Go Tos!
Of course it’s hard. SNK always seems to chose the hardest games for its arcade library!
I LOVE SHOCK TROOPERS! I have em both on Steam. They're awesome.
This game looks great! Great vid
This game is also on switch along with its sequel!
This game looks incredible
Looks like they're both on Switch too. I may have to pick this up. It looks awesome.
This might well be one of the best arcade games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Shame the second game wasn't nearly as good.
Not even close.
Great review!
Wow a really cool hidden gem. Thank you
digging the jungle outro.
This is prime era Neo-Geo right here. Fantastic game, and the sequel is even better.
I dunno about that. I think the first one is far superior but both are must haves.
Oh man, I bought this game on GOG years ago and totally forgot I had it!
