- This video will show some of the modifications that are made by John Edwards @ Costa Mesa R&D Automotive Machine on a 1500cc Fiat X1/9 (Punto Marea) connecting rods and new forged JE pistons. www.engine-machining.com 949-631-6376

When I was a teen ager I had fiat 124 sport coupes, my favorite
Accumulator grove balances the pressure between the top and second ring.
@anililguy - If you are still running the cast iron crank, probably not. You can nitride and cryo the crank to increase durability to a point. Sounds like you need a steel billet crank for that much power. The stock crank only has 4 counterweights, you need one with eight.
By not using a stock Fiat crankshaft. I'm in the process of getting some drawings done for a 8-counterweight stroker so that it will eventually be able to be stroked to 1600cc. Stock cranks will go 10K rpm but they don't like it there for very long. By adding 4 more counterweights the crankshaft will become more balanced and therefore become more stable @ higher rpms.

We run stock modified rod @ 10,000 rpm already in a Solo 2, X1/9. Thanks for asking. Have a billet crank in the works for the 1500 block (1600) w/8 counterweights and modified oil system.
Incredible.
that dude is skilled
The stock X1/9 engine is definately NOT free running. When the timing belt broke in my '74, I bent ALL but one valve (the last valve broke in half), punctured two pistons and knocked out a valve seat.
What does the accumulator groove do?
Mine was a USA spec 1290cc. The belt, technically, didn't snap. It looked like it lost a number of adjacent teeth which allowed it to slip on the crankshaft drive gear.
do you know the best way to get a bit more power from my fiat 1.2 8valve SPI engine which isnt going to cost a lot to do, also does remapping the engine really work? thank you
can you comment on using a 1100cc head on 1300/1500 block with thicker gasket for raised compression as faza did /al cosentino
I am interested in building the "full monty" to get as much HP and torque as possible. Two questions; how much power is too much for this car for dependable street use? What Tranny is being used to handle this power? Thanks, good videos and good work!
Ok that only leads me to my last questions. How much power, Max rpms etc and how much money for a complete engine? And do I need to supply an engine? I have an X I want to put it in. 74 Dallara wide body. JJ
Thank you for the great video! Can the modified old fiat rods really take 11000-12000rpm? I have a 1.6 sohc and I was going to buy h-beam rods for that engine. Is this unnecessary for a 9000rpm street engine?
Is your car Euro or USA-spec? The Euro-models have significantly higher comp. ratio than the US-models. At least the Euro-spec Ritmo 1500 has smaller valve reliefs than the ones on the video.
@ fiatnutz , hi mate, I've been looking at your videos and thought you might be able point me to the right direction.. Currently I have a 1.4 punto gt running 255hp and in process of building a 1.9 with sporting block and stilo crank.. I'm aiming for just under 400hp but not sure if the crank would be able to handle it? can you give me any advice on this field? Cheers.. :)
How capable are these motors and chassis?
also how expensive are they. I got a Fiat x1/9 in back I saved from the crusher but I don't want to let it rot out back I want to build it soon.
Has anyone ever taken something like a toyota or honda fwd 4cyl setup modified to fit in there?? I thought about doing that since parts are much more accessible since I don't have a machine shop.
I kinda like to try the 4age toyota or b16 honda. but I bet the fiat engine is lighter.
Shelby wants to know how your going to keep the engine from falling appart at 14,000 rpms??? JJ
I routinely run 9:1 up to 10,5:1 compression om ym turbo engines. Running higher static compression improves low-rpm power and what's more important is that I don't have to run as much boost to get the same power and w/o an intercooler. Don't be fooled by those who tell you to run 8:1 and just crank up the boost, everytime you crank up boost, you heat the air a substantial amount. I run the VQ35 engines w/10.2:1 compression w/2 turbos and make over 500 WHP.

500 hp with stock rods?
If no, what torque does oe fiat lancia twincam rods take before it binds?
4 cylinders ?
what engine size ?
turbo, non turbo ?
you can make more than 220 from a 4 cylinders !
Very nice infos , like the way things is explained,
Change off subjekt , Do you know anyboby in the US who make alu wheel hubs for 1500 X .1/9,
Here in EU the prices off these hubs are horendus . Sorry to interupt . OVE from Oslo Norway
I want some for my X1/9
haha i have your pistons in my harley
Yeah but you had the 1.3. The 1.5 is a non-interference engine.
