Installing a Stages Power Meter on SRAM Rival 22 (with spindle attached to left crank arm)

- Stages power meters use the left crank arm. Most cranksets have the spindle fixed to the drive side (right) crank arm. SRAM Rival 22 has the spindle fixed to the non-drive side (left) crank arm. This video shows how to use a SRAM power meter with SRAM Rival 22 and any other crankset with this configuration.

Very clear video on how to install that power meter. No excess bullshit, just right to the point. Thanks.
This is a pretty slick system! Thank you for showing the "how-to setup" with the Stages Power Meter and what computer you'll be using with it. Can't wait for the follow up video!
I combed the web for these steps after my bike shop said it wasn't possible. Working with the stages customer support team (who were great by the way) they directed me to their install video which is exactly what you've done here. You could have saved me a week of sweating but thanks all the same for posting this
, very helpful. I can't wait to get mine installed on my gravel bike.
I went down a similar thought process when it comes to power meters. Its on my short list. I need to buy 3 sets of wheels first. Carbon aint cheap. How cool is that they hooked you up with a power meter. I guess there are some perks to this youtube thing.
This is the answer to my power meter questions.
i'm running the FSA Powerbox (P2M NG ECO) on my gravel bike and it works great. i was considering a single sided but it was only $300 more to get the dual sided in Canada
Love stages power meters. I have one on my road bike and mtb.
A couple of years ago I bought a Stages power meter for my Ultegra crankset. Although it worked fine, I did not find it to be of much benefit to me; and so, when I upgraded to Dura Ace, I sold it. I recently bought a PowerTap P1 dual-sided power meter for my spinning bike, which is far more use to me, since I do all of my structured training indoors, not on my road bike, which is reserved for leisure. They give me more information than my one-sided Stages meter. What I don't like is the accompanying cleats, which have far too much float/free-play. Instead I have been using the Look zero float cleats, but there is still more free play than I would like. I just wish I could use my Shimano blue road cleats.
Good video clint. I love my stages pm. It really is a very reliable component.
Hi Clint. Any thoughts for the follow up video on the power meter and pairing? Love the channel! Keep up the great work!

Great video, convinced me to buy one but I cannot seem to find the lengths of them besides numbers I have Sram 165 x01 dh carbon cranks with a 30mm spindle. What size is spindle B
That’s crazy my crack and chain rings looks identical to this SRAM rival 22 but the bolt is on the non drive side
Waiting to see what power meter data is, and what you can do with it. Looks like you need to put some time in the saddle to show what it does. All I know so far is it was a nice blue color that you will never see again.
My main purpose for using it is to determine my FTP power and then my training zones, then doing intervals within certain training zones. I used to use heart rate but power is a better method of training.
Hi Clint,
Thank you for the video.
Your Force 22 appears to be a DUB crankset. Is that the case, and if not, do you know if the Stages Sram powermeters are compatible with the BB86 Sram DUB bottom brackets / cranksets (for gravel bikes with a Sram Force eTap AXS groupset))?
Thank you.
This one is not DUB. I would contact Stages about what is compatible with SRAM BB86.
@@ClintGibbs Thank you, Clint. I will. Clear.
Great Video, though oddly my Rival 22 is the opposite with the spindle attached to the non drive side
That’s the way my rival is as well. Spindle attached to the left arm, or non-drive side
Sorry, meant to say spindle attached on drive side. I was able to swap the left crank arm with a stages power meter without having to install replacement spindle
Kurt Congdon I guess they changed their design them for the recent ones.
Hi @clintgibbs - thanks so much for the video. Can I ask if you know whether the type B Ali doe would work for a new V2 SRAM force AXS group set as well? Is this the same as the SRAM force 22?? Thanks!
I have not tried a Stages with the new SRAM group set. Check with Stages. Their customer service is helpful and should be able to answer that.
Will this work with a sram force 22 bb30 crankset?
Yes, but you should not need the spindle since typically with Force the spindle is attached to the drive side.
@@ClintGibbs I believe, that's not the case with the Sram Force eTap AXS. I installed mine a week ago: if my recollection is correct, as is the case with your Rival 22, the Sram Force eTap AXS does have the spindle attached to the non-drive side crankarm.
This one - a SRAM Force DUB 2x12-speed Crankset: www.bike-components.de/en/SRAM/Force-DUB-2x12-speed-Crankset-p68737/black-172-5-mm-35-48-o69411820/
clint price point in this is more than i want to spend, can you leave the spindle on left arm and send into stages to have them add power meter ?
I am not sure about that, but if they could, I think it would still be about the same price. If you check on it and they do it, let us know!
At 5:20, in what direction are you "backing out" the adjustable spacer? Toward the crank or toward the bottom bracket? It looks like it's coming toward the crank.
I'm considering installing the Rival Power Meter Upgrade on my own, and this is the only step I don't quite understand the point of when reading the online manual. What is it that the adjustable spacer does exactly?
Thank you in advance. I get a ton of help from your channel.
Turn it clockwise, towards the negative sign to put space in there. Once you tighten the crank bolt, turn it counterclockwise, towards the plus, sign, the takeout any remaining slack
@@ClintGibbs Thank you.
What exactly is the spacer doing, though? Taking out excess play that would permit the spindle/crank assembly from sliding sideways in the BB? If so, why is there play if you've tightened the cranks? Wouldn't tightening the crank push it right up to the spacer?
@@ADRNG when you tighten the crank bolt it can only move so far because of the way the axle is designed. If it were to pinch limitlessly it would hinder the bearings. You have to have some spacers in there
@@ClintGibbs Ooooooh, yeah, that's true. Thanks for the information, bro!
does it work with a RACE FACE NEXT SL crankset?
Pretty sure It does. If you go to Stages website you should be able to confirm that.
will this work on sram 1x
It will if the spindle is attached to the left crank on. Different SRAM cranks have the spindle on the left or right crank.
Do you need the stages spindle?
Only if your style of cranks has the drive side crank arm come off when removing the cranks. On most Shimano cranks, it’s the left crank arm that comes off so you would not need the spindle.
U are missing a chain ring bolt
