  • In this video I will explain how Sram has progressed from the GXP, BB30, PF30 and now the newer DUB Spindle. While it is annoying that we have a new standard, I have to say that SRAM has done an amazing job developing and making the DUB system. Let me know your thoughts below.

    The real reason why SRAM moved to a 29mm spindle is the same reason why Shimano is on a 24mm spindle instead of a 25mm spindle. Standard 680x bearing IDs come in 5mm increments. Using 29mm and 24mm spindles means you can place a Delrin tophat in between…that prevents galling between the metal spindles and hardened steel bearing races.

    Hi BC, thanks for this awesome tutoriell! A additional question about running a modern Quarq Dzero Dub Powermeter with a Sram red 11speed etap BB30/386 crank (8bolt): I heard Sram says officially that "its not compatible. it would fit but the chainring(s) would be ca.1.5mm offset". My questions: 1. is this correct? 2. If it's correct, what is the reason for this? (is the dub spindle 3mm shorter or longer? - I have no other explanation)? 3. What is yout thought on this combination? Thank you very much!!

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 7 dny +1

      I am sorry for the delay, just getting back into CZcams after taking a break. The DUB spindle is every so slightly wider than the older 30mm Sram spindles. I had a wider than normal T47 86.5mm BB (85.5mm is normal) on my titanium bike and I could run the dub cranks but not the 30mm cranks because they were too narrow. So putting the older Quarq on there will work. Just need to adjust your front derailleur properly. 1.5mm is nothing when it comes to front derailleur adjustment. If you are running 1x then it will not be an issue. Did you try it?

    Since the ends of the spindles are the same between dub and pf30, am I right in understanding that you could change a pf30 spindle to a dub one and it would fit both crank arms? In the video you show that the spindle ends are the same and use a dub non drive side crank arm with a pf30 drive side crank. I have an old pf30 crank set and hoped to put it on my DH bike. For that I need the right spindle length (researching that now) and the dub width.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 16 dny

      The issue with DUB is that the Nondriveside Arm is bonded permanently to the DUB spindle. If you can find a dub spindle somewhere that allows you to screw the Non drive side cranks on then yes you can swap to the DUB spindle. The only company I know that offered it was stages but their splines are clocked differently so you have to use their crank arm with the spindle and now they are out of business. I have purchased non drive side dub arms and spindles before for cheap and put a PF30 driveside crank arm on it for some cheaper builds.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před rokem

      Hi Mike, the issue you may have is that yours is 3 bolt and all the newer Quarq D Zero power meters are 8 bolt. If you could find an older lightly used Quarq Elsa or Riken (both 3 bolt) then you would be good to go. Quarq claims you can't swap between arm lengths with the older Elsa/Riken or it will read higher or lower depending on which way you move on the arm length but honestly it will not be much of a difference. A few second hand companies make 3 bolt power meters like Xcadey or Power2Max that you could swap it with. Another option is to find a right side 8 bolt and a D Zero power meter but that will be hard to come by in your exact length. I hope that helps.

      Hi please help. I purchased a Force 22 BB30 Is it possible to fit to a BSA 68mm shell?

  • @adamhindle9215
    @adamhindle9215 Před 2 měsíci +3

    GXP was bad, for engineering reasons (floating driveside bearing, no way to preload the bearings). BB30 was even worse and has rightfully died a long time ago. PF30 wasn't quite as bad but had tiny bearings so ate those for fun. DUB tried to solve that problem by shaving 1mm off the diameter, so basically the same and almost as bad. In summary bad, badder, not as bad, not as bad. Ultimately, avoid. Sram is doing some excellent things, in mtb and road, but cranks aren't one of them. Also when you say 'bottom bracket', in reference to the frame, then you should say 'bottom bracket shell'.

    i used a SRAM XX1 with 30mm short spindle with threaded bottom bracket in my old Cannondale Super V900, i only had to find a threaded BB for 30 mm and also file the flat sides of the frame until it fitted. carbon crancks, short 30mm spindle, and less frame metal means i saved lots of weight. Also can run dual crown

      That is awesome! I have seen people do this to be able to fit the older specialized S works cranks in regular 73mm BB threaded bikes. Glad you got it to work!

      @@BlackWaterCyclist also you can use 83 mm wide spindle in 73 mm narrow old frames using spacers. old Rock Shox Boxxer used dust seals fit perfectly. i put Saint crancks in old frames. also the Saint BB has enought thread to reach the width needed.
      about 300 mm spindles, the are bottom brackets for threaded frames that has different bearings for that spindle diameter.

    What about "DUB Boost", "DUB Wide" and "DUB SuperBoost +" spindle lenghts to address 52, 55 and 56.5mm chainlines. The spindles are etched with "DUB or DUB SL", "DUB Wide" and "DUB SB+" to I dentify them. I believe the "SL" stands for Standard Length" not "Super Light".

      Great points here Mike. I guess I need to make an updated video. SL actually stands for Super Light. I have had both a Force Dub crank regular width and a Red Dub Regular width and the Red had SL on it and the Force did not.

      @@francescocostantini5926 Correct, you cannot take the spindle from a DUB and put it on an older crank arm and vise versa. It looks like Leonardi makes a dub spindle for their cranks that has the same 30mm interface as the older Sram 30mm spindle cranks but this appears to be for MTB. northwestbicycle.com/products/leonardi-capo-crank-axle-dub-crank-separate-b-ln6050?currency=USD&variant=40061147545705&stkn=398fa69d1b59&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwv-2pBhB-EiwAtsQZFGuWCDMD0vrl09GfBnhrjQN3x3Mm7qHOWqYOIguX0cVU519366fwxhoC4ygQAvD_BwE

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 7 dny

      Sorry they did not have DUB wide when I made this video or at least it was very new. Dub Wide for road is a total of 5mm wider spindle. Everything else is the same. SO you have a 5mm wider Q factor and it moves the Front Derailleur wider by 2.5mm to give more room for larger tires. Wide for MTB does the same, just makes the spindle wider for more tire/chainstay/chainring clearance.

      But it is a big deal when selecting replacement BB because the bearings are 5mm further apart.

    Aluminum spindle is sooner or later going to wear and be trash. Switching to shimano because of this

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 10 dny

      I have had SRAM alloy spindles for years with no issues. The original PF30 spindles that were aluminum would have issues since they connect directly to the steel races of the bearings and would wear and cause clicking or creaking. The newer Dub are better because they use a plastic sleeve similar to shimano bearings so they do not have the wear like previous PF30 cranks. Shimano has had more crankarm issues than SRAM over the years. I would say SRAM have been more reliable than Shimano in the crankset arena though that is not the case in most parts with SRAM vs Shimano.

    • @CWBmtb
      @CWBmtb Před 10 dny

      @@BlackWaterCyclist most of the spindles in the video already show some small amounts of wear. For people that ride a lot, it happens way too soon regardless of the amount of maintenance. Thats my experience and the same for many people I know that ride XC.

    you dont shim a gxp crankset or any 24mm crankset on the axle! shim is done on the bb.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před rokem

      You can shim 24mm spindles on the axle. GXP is obviously a different animal. Sometimes the shim for the BB is too thick and they do not offer thinner ones and you need to shim on the axle. On a brand new Scott Spark 2022 with XT 24mm spindle cranks, they had 2 shims on the axles, stock from the factory.

    ......Sooo...I have Sram red cranks, PF-30 spindle, long version, 172.5mm. 53/39,Wanted 165mm. Cranks. Got my hands on a set. Had to send them back...came with the short spindle. No one knows what the heck i am talking about because Sram didnt even have enough courtesy for people to put a different model number on the shorter-or-longer spindle, they both say PF-30. So it would seem no one on planet earth has a long spindle, Sram red 165mm 53/39 crankset, PF-30 OR GXP, new or used, for sale, so that i can match the rest of the components on my bike. Oh, and if my A1 derailleur goes bad, they want $800. It would seem Shimano arent the only greedy, inconsiderate ones, after all.(Hammerhead)
