James May and Mike race to build Lego 911s - 45 min Q&A

- James May is well-known for his love of Lego and everything miniature, so we came up with a challenge to put his skills to the test. We pitted our very own Mike Fernie against him, with the aim being to build a Lego Porsche 911 as quickly as possible. Some interesting questions were asked along the way too, so grab a cup of tea, get comfortable and watch this speed build unfold.

Make sure to watch to the end for the forfeit, and stay tuned for more hobby-style content coming to the channel featuring May and I!
You should have called him on his smugness.
Aye kinna continue t’watch Draivetraibe, if they’re no allowed t’make raindom Top Gare references. 🧐
Whoops, sorry for the accent... it tends to happen when the weather is cold n wet here in Southern California. ☔️ 🌴 ☁️
Really enjoying the content, especially these intra-office challenges. I could sit and watch James May assembling, disassembling, cleaning, and talking about things all day.
+1 vote for televising (Tubivising??) the Saturn rocket build. Especially if James is going to regale us with facts and stories about the importance of the Saturn... And other space programmes.
Perhaps along with DriveTribe and FoodTribe, we need a MayTribe channel!
You shouldn’t care about that forfeit, James’s vehicles would all be immaculately clean anyway - just have a bag of crisps on you, he probably wouldn’t let you within 10ft of them 😁
I am so privileged to watch James May for 45 minutes.
You could, instead, not. You'd still be priviledged because you had a choice.
We sure fucking are...
haha I reached to like your comment and turns out I already have liked it like a year ago =) I liked the choice of word
Please James make the Lego Saturn V on camera that would be awesome.
Agreed, maybe with a historical commentary on it and it's program.
I built that thing and it is an awesome model with tons of interesting facts in the manual, but it took me nearly 2 hours. Of course that was fighting with my young son that wanted to help and kept grabbing bits and bobs and moving things around..
All 1969 parts! :-D
Yes we'll have whip round for the tequilla 😂😂😂😂😂😂
He would spend most of the time talking about Apollo program. It would indeed be awesome.
Me: I should probably do my homework
CZcams: James May for 45 minutes
Me: yes
YES!
same here! xD
Hahaha
OH MY GOD YES
Heyyy Amanda
I'm only 15 minutes in and this guy has tried to get a pay rise twice.
Timestamp?
Don't have a timestamp, but very early on he stated that he couldn't afford James's 911, even though he fancies it (bringing up his drive-tribe salary).
Then (probably closer to the 15 minute mark), he says he'd buy James's lawnmower with his "measly drivetribe salary", and then because he probably couldn't keep it running on said salary, he'd dismantle it and use the piston as a paperweight...
I think Joe is implying he's hinting that he doesn't get paid enough, thus fishing for a raise... >_>
Maybe the 911 can be my Christmas bonus.
@@mikedrivetribe8314 No way mate. After watching your hilariously wrong "testarossa engine's aren't flat" video, I would say you are getting overpaid if anything. Reading the first few sentences on wikipedia about flat engines could have cleared that up for you.
@@jeffsymons7084 agreed, he's uninteresting, unfunny, boring, bland... I fall asleep trying to watch videos with him in it. He definitely doesn't deserve a raise, he doesn't pull any views either, due to the characteristics aforementioned.
Why did I watch this? Now I’ve got to stop on the way home for LEGO Porsche’s. For the kids, of course.
"For the kids"
Admit it, its for you isn't it?
Nothing wrong with being an adult into legos... >_>
=p
Im a kid. Give it to me lol
The lego senna is incredible, my futur kids will love it
@@azerty1933 XD.
And I'm here sitting with every model of Speed Champions that's been on sale since 2017, about to make a scene from Le Mans on my shelf (Indianapolis turn). And yes, I know I'm a nerd for Lego lol
Imagine Jeremy Clarkson building this set for 45 minutes with a hammer.
"I'm doing manual labour!"
😂😂😂😂😂
Hahhahahhahahh
AP13P samir, you are breaking the car
@@SuperLisandro86 Thats so spot on.
James reminds me of my dad, he cut and re-glued the crankshaft on a Technic Unimog because the firing order was wrong. Fecking legend.
Now that's attention to detail
Based on nothing more than this comment, I like your dad.
Thanks guys! He is a good man!
Have yourselves a great day!
Sounds like my dad too lol, i always said he was like May
He is a legend! 😂😂
Clarkson: Is there anything worse than standing on a lego?
May: Landmines.
Was so happy that they brought this back!
Or an upturned plug
@@comradebartek4524 try a metal d4 dice, with sharp edges ofc
or hot wheels
I feel for mike - clearly wants a pay rise, poor bloke.
side note - I would love to work for drivetribe
I'd settle for a pay adjustment accounting for inflation
That's probably why he doesn't get paid very much... a lot of people would love to work for drivetribe... >_>
supply vs. demand... =p
I can buy the 911, just at 1:18 scale.
haha! Love that, any jobs going?
I'd sleep in the janitors closet if they hired me
Who could guess that James May would be the best youtuber from the three?
James seems the most genuine out of the three to me.
Jeremy is knob hammod is twat
Obviously james is genuine😂
Jeremy takes advantage of the fact that he can say what he wants on the internet and Richard is having a midlife crisis and is paid to tell us. James is just James. I like Mike too
I would guess that. His toys programmes from 10 years or so ago were very good, and his man lab was very good. I can't think of anything Jeremy has done, and Richard has done Total Wipeout...
I think James has always been pretty much what James is now-rather unaffected by midlife crises, attention etc. Clarkson is loud and controversial, Hammond is chirpy and outgoing. James isn’t any of that(and I would say people like James are rare in media), he has done programmes covering a wide variety of subjects entirely without Hammond and Clarkson involved. He’s multi-talented and attracts a wide audience.
I remember when you didn't need to use stickers. Printed bricks were a thing even in 90's
They used stickers in 90 in places where print would take a few bricks
I've found an advantage so... toss for it? So sweet!
I can't believe I sat and watched two grown men assemble Legos for 45 minutes... I loved it all. Thank you!
Yes I would like to see James build the Saturn 5 rocket!
CZcams can't handle so long videos. :-D
The sound of clipping together of parts was extremely satisfying
James May: It's nearly a tea time
That was the most british thing a man could say
We call our evening meal tea. Supper comes after
Retro Lad working class people call Lunch - Dinner and call Dinner - tea
@@bpg9992 like me yeah lol
@@bpg9992 I'd probably know that if I were british, but I'm kinda from Putinland

Please do this with James and Jeremy! It would be mind blowing!
I'd be interested in seeing how long it takes James to do the Saturn V. It took me the entirety of "The Right Stuff" to build the first stage, such a fun build.
James is so wholesome. Every time I watch one of these hobby videos, seeing him in a different environment than usual is super interesting, and heartwarming. Seeing him build LEGO models like many of us have is so cool.
This was the most relaxing three quarters of an hour of my whole week. Thank you. I guess Mike and James are my Bob Rosses ( said with all the respect to all three mentioned gentlemen ).
I get it. What a kind, foresightful thing to think of than to hide the cars for some bored to death kids. Good man.
I’d love to build Lego cars with James May! He is a good laugh
James May good man taking the one with stickers.
12:45 had my laughing so much 😂 oh James.
Hi jake you were right about the rx7
“But I’m going to be the man and take the stickers”
That’s James May for you!
The same man who then later complains about every sticker :D
They’re drinking “not beer”. Just like the “not vodka”.
Yeah, who isn’t James is drinking not beer lol
Watching Captain Slow build Lego is hypnotic it it's nothingness. I caught myself smiling just watching him opening the box. Amazing.
26:43 That's why I love James May 😊
was thinking that James will file all the parts before assembling
And Clarkson storming in shouting "JAAAAAAAMESSSSS!!!"
If you’re not going to drink the glass of ale, I’m a bit parched
45 mins of James may I'll just trow everything else to the side 😁😁😁
*tow
I’m supposed to be putting up my Christmas tree and I’ve had to stop to watch James assemble legos. No regrets.
Two grown up people playing with LEGO for 45 minutes. I f*cking love it! 😎👍🇸🇪
James my fantasy would be to see you service a classic car, set timing, the carb mixture, teach us how to use a vacuum gauge to diagnose . I get goose bumps just thinking about it 😂.
I’d watch that!
I can not get over that fact that James May said “whatevs“
So dull it's hypnotic and calming! Respect.
Mike not moving the bag out of the way drove me bonkers!
Why why why do I have to watch everything CMH make?
Would love to see Clarkson do something like this..
I'd love to see Clarkson try something like this...mind you don't think they would like to be recording him on camera for 3 days trying to build it 😂🤣😂🤣
He would bring in the hammer 5 minutes into this.
@@AP13P I don't think he would last 5 minutes. 1-2 at best!
@@AP13P haha true ah don't think we will ever get to see that it would be priceless
He would eat the Lego rather than build it I recon
Why are you not having the "definently not vodka" drink, the video could've been 90 minutes like the one with Hammond
Personally, watching May fix a model train set would be quite interesting and different. I know it's not cars, but like his cooking videos, it was just another May-ism. Great stuff!
Saturn V with Dr James may commentary ... yes please. I didn’t realize that was a question.
anyone else getting paranoid because Mike is putting his pepsi in a place he can easily knock over
Do you have children? :)
Seeing as James has become quite the unintentional promoter of Lego, quite a good one in my opinion, they should create a set dedicated to him. A Technics set perhaps.
May and mike, the duo of wholesome entertainment.
That Hamilton PanEurop on James’s wrist is just pure class !!! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Mr. May is absolutely right, Lego stickers are a darn nuisance, mainly because once applied, you can’t reuse the parts as freely. But the fact that Lego in its early days was making more or mainly generic parts is a misconception. They used in fact to make more specialised and less versatiles elements than they do now...
“Have you step on a lego” *thinks of James living in a lego house*
Which he did in James May's Toy Stories. It took over a month, 1200 volunteers helped and 3.3 million bricks were used. The house was fully furnished with items built out of lego and had a life-size Lego cat, which was stolen.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino I know as I watched it happen and why I commented
The quintessential Lego experience is being dead certain a piece is missing before you inevitably find it
Armchair Racer absolutely true.
This is no less exactly what you would expect and yet so much more entertaining
James: You tell us if we should. Me: yes
Would like to s we James build the Saturn 5
Love these kinds of videos
I've done it - cool kit - all 1969 parts!
love the smiles that lego brings... finish product is so fun!!! nice job guys... great convo
45 minutes just flew by. 👍 More LEGO, please.
great fun
As the Saturn rocket is almost 2000 pieces, I would watch a 10 min time lapse.
Timelapse will be entertaining but
Q and A Live stream
And
3,4 part video series would be better
I can't believe I watched this in one go without getting bored. :O
I love watching these contests. just too entertaining
36:28 When you realize the max age for that lego set is 14 but they are both over 40:
"Wait that's illegal"
@The Public Enemy: 23:30 born in 1994 . Might be that he's only 25.
Brother of a friend of mine is fully bald, and less than 25... >_>
Hair isn't everything I suppose... =p
40?! I'm a 90s kid god dammit! The hair loss does play a part however.
The Public Enemy well, if I'm right Mikes only 25. But according to him it's hair loss makes him look old
@@mikedrivetribe8314 you made me feel old with things like not knowing what a power ball was... Anyway you can always cite that thing about bald men having higher testosterone levels.
that guy doesnt seem like being 25 years old to be honest
Classic mistake. Lie about you age one time and then get stuck with it.
1994 born and bred! It's the catastrophic hair loss that I'm blessed with...
@@mikedrivetribe8314 damn man, You look too old for a 35 year old! 😀
Big fan btw, You're great on the show.
Give the man a raise! 😀
3 days older than me and i would never had guessed it
Wait he's 25. Poor sod i though he was in his mid 30's
Most funny moment at - 12:41 Watch James peeling the sticker. Gold ❤️
More videos like this please James!
I want to see James' watch collection.
i really want to know the name of the blue watch he has on in this
@@lucashalfaleigh Same - I like the watch he is wearing in this vid. I’d love to hear him discuss every detail of his watch collection.
Do a competition with Airfix models
I'm 54 and my childhood was Lego and Meccano. I still ace the kiddies when the sets come out for assembly. I still enjoy either one.
I could listen to James May's stories all day... but no more :)
James ultimately lost as Mike has no idea how to wash a car, Start at the top man.
Technique has never been my strong point in anything. It's only a Mirai though...
Tut tut Steve... When washing a car you should wet the car down first and that should always be done bottom to top, otherwise you create dirt streaks (and risk scratches) by washing dirt onto dry parts of the body.
In principal, because the job of the soap is to lift and suspend the dirt in the liquid away from the car body, that too is actually better done bottom to top. Otherwise dirt gets pulled down onto parts of the body that don't have soap offering that suspension quality.
Rinsing should definitely be done to top bottom though.
@@damionlee7658 I am an ex Toyota Car valet worker, wet car, wash wheels with sponge one, wheel arches and rockers next, then inside door frames with sponge two. wet car again, sponge three wash roof, bonnet, wet car again, wash sides top downwards, windows first, door panels next, ensure sponge remains clean. Back last, Rinse, dry done.

Loved the Lego build, more Legos would be great.
What life has come to. Watching two guys build Lego
It's only gonna be downhill from here

May did build an entire house out of Legos.
No tricking like before with Hammond!? ....Honest competition, honest conversation. Thoughtful as usual from May. Love you May.
Just excellent. Simple and excellent.

Lego Robin Space Shuttle 😜
Hope Mike was using washing up liquid to wash May's car. That would really piss James off 😀
Brilliant gents and I don't even get excited by Lego lol. There is a brilliant future for you Mr "Millennial" lol. Stick with Mr May and I am certain you will do well. Thanks guys. A salute to James from a fellow alumni of Lancaster.

I dislike Lego stickers. They should just print it on.
Well then you can't reassemble it into something different
@@gnupfo I disagree. The tech print stuff of the Star Wars set for example can easily be used for own creations. Besides that the Sticker have a tendency to crumble after some years, not sure what is the cause.
