    The curb weight of the vehicle will play a role in how much HP and torque you can apply to the transmission while still staying reliable, i.e., not grenading the transmission.

    For your upcoming exhaust project, I humbly suggest saving yourself some headaches by ordering continuous CNC-mandrel bent tubing rather than TIG welding individual segments at each bend. I had a surprisingly reasonable estimate from Woolf Aircraft Products which included a modest setup fee and many material choices. If you can find a tubing supplier with a CNC mandrel bender locally, you should be able to save some money on shipping.
    If you decide to TIG weld the entire length, plan each weld sequence strategically so your TIG torch can still fit into each nook and cranny. It sucks to grind away a beautiful weld after discovering that you're blocking another weld or that your last weld shrunk the tubing in an unexpected way causing fit-up issues. Either way, please keep the content coming!

      Great advice! I'm partially excited to tackle the fabrication challenge but also looking forward to the end product so both routes look decent right now. I'll keep that in mind and keep updates rolling out.

    Interesting. Ive got my 2013 LS 5.3 aluminum engine. Parted out from a new Hummer. I'd very much like to do this. For an undecided project. Ive got custom headers that come up over the intake. Originally for a rock crawler but maybe a boat or a Mid engine car. Or Turbocharged... Application. Ill keep watching. I also know someone who is building a custom GTR Race car. He also sells kits. hmmm.

But I had a question I recently picked up a Audi 012. 5 speed with a shift cable shifter and all the accessories ..... And I found conflicting information on the internet some say they're the same case with different gears and others says it completely different transaxle I'm worried I will not be able to find an adapter ?? Unfortunately I don't know enough about the 012 to know if it will work out. I'd reach out to a few adapter suppliers before ordering, they will know best and be able to guarantee a fit.

      I can't say for sure without a deeper dive on how the AWD system biases torque between the front and rear wheels. I'm sure the bell housing would fit but I'd dig into it more before buying anything.

    . Interesting choice of transmission. Are all 01X trans the same? Gonna have to do a bunch of research on this. I also am i. The designing stage of a mid engine super car project.
    I found a bunch of 01X transmissions listed. What did yours come out of? 01X301315G ..... same?

      Check this link out for all the 01X options. The code you listed is the SN I believe, but the specific gear ratios depend on a 3 character model. The majority of these gearboxes came from an Audi A4.

    Is there a reason you went with the O1X gearbox versus the O1E?

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage  Před 2 měsíci

      01E is much harder to find and while it's a proven gearbox, the 01X seems to be strong enough for my goals. The adapter plate is the same (I believe) so if I decide to switch at some point it should be easy enough to do.

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage  Před rokem +2

      Ebay is where I found mine. They rarely pop up for sale but they do. Shipping can be tricky being that transmissions are usually freight that ship to businesses only. I sent mine to a friend's business, but I believe Fastenal will receive freight for people as well.

      @@DirtyElbowsGarage oh wow, yeah, i'll have to keep my eye out. its been almost 6 months with nothing yet lol. Do you know how to tell if its the fwd version or not other than it lacking the rear output shaft? I think the transmission code FYF has been used, but i'm not sure if that is exclusive to the FWD version or not.

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage  Před rokem +1

      I'm not sure about FYF but here's a link I used to help ID the FWD gearboxes: workshop-manuals.com/audi/a4_mk2/power_transmission/6-speed_manual_gearbox_01x_front-wheel_drive/technical_data/gearbox_identification/code_letters_allocation_transmission_ratios_capacities/
      Most people won't list the code so the picture of the missing output shaft is definitely useful also.

    Sorry to bug you again, but can you tell me what made you choose the 01x vs the 016 or the even harder one to find 01E? From what i've been reading, people make it seem like the 01x and others will break under 350hp? thoughts?

    • @DirtyElbowsGarage
      @DirtyElbowsGarage  Před rokem +2

      Great question. The 01E is most definitely the standard. But as rare as the 01X is, the 01E is much much rarer. And with that rarity comes cost that make it less appealing as it gets closer to a custom gearbox. 016 and 012 are definitely known to be weaker while the 01X is/was a bit unknown. If I remember right the 01X is a successor to the 01E - even sharing a good portion of bell housing geometry. The main difference is that the 01E had cast iron housing components while the 01X uses cast aluminum. I had my concerns about the 01X until I ran across a guy who built and races a turbocharged LS tube chassis car at a drag strip. Launch after launch it holds up. Ultimately the cost and availability of the 01X is worth trying it out.

    • @seanhiggins704
      @seanhiggins704 Před rokem

      @DirtyElbowsGarage Very true. Ive been looking for the elusive unicorn 01E for months. Ive been thinking about trying the 01x approach myself. Are you using the 01x30044EX GVD? It seems there are several variations of each lol
