Emma, I never see any other true crime channel or outlet pointing out the issue with blaming horrific, violent behavior on drug addiction. As an opiate addict with 11 years clean and also having lost my very sweet, gentle older brother and younger sister also to opiate addiction, I really appreciate you saying how most addicts are not violent and it’s not a reason for someone to commit this type of act. I wish more channels would take up this advocacy for addicts because it’s a very harmful yet largely untrue stereotype that prevents addicts from getting the help and support they so desperately need.

    • @WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey
      @WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey Před 8 měsíci +25

Absolutely agree. Not all addicts will rob their granny for dru§ money, not all addicts will lose all their morals to the addiction. From my personal experience and IMHO.
Oh and well done on 11 years opiate free. That's quite an accomplishment - the slang term "devil's dandruff" is 100% fitting and accurate to describe the most popular street opiate. It's a subtle and insidious substance in how it gains control over a person and I'm very sorry you lost your loves ones to the awful stuff 😔

@@WakeyWakeyEggsandBakey thank you for the kind words! I won’t say I never did anything illegal during my addiction- just taking my drug of choice every day was illegal but I will say I have zero criminal record and both of my siblings died also with zero criminal record. Most addicts do have criminal records at some point but the large majority are for petty theft and possession, not violent crimes. Thanks again for your insight and empathy 💖

She was beaten to death, 2 little boys left in the house to find her body. I would give anything to see a judgement like this. I'm sorry for all in this, except him, all of you who have lost her. As a woman affected by domestic violence from 3 husbands and men friends with several attempts to take my life, I understand completely how easy it is for a woman in particular, to be manipulated and sucked in at the beginning with 'love bombing'. I didn't die, but through one of my husband being a 'narcissist', I have been abandoned by my three children. I ran away overseas only to have more abuse from Nigerian men who conned me out of all my money ($120,000+). Because I didn't lie and was always honest, I thought everyone else was too, especially if they were Vietnamese or African. I am now out of dreamland, but now suffering the consequences of PTSD, in many ways. However, I am now at peace and it will not happen again, as I cannot really walk now and so do not have friends and keep to myself. My joy in life is studying Creative Writing and use my experiences in fictional stories and poetry etc.
Thank you for your expertise and sensitivity in your podcasts. You are my favourite. Cheers, Elizabeth.

This one was so very hard for me to get through. I had to repeatedly rewind over and over because this story was so close to what I went through in my early 20s. No one understands that this doesn't happen overnight. Men like him have a way of even after hitting and hurting you making YOU feel sorry for HIM. What he did and how he was was so close to my abuser. The difference was that a 12 year old boy that lived close to me called the police the night I needed it most. It was bad. He got 20 years for what he did to me it was really bad. He only actually did 12 years and they let him out without telling me and he showed up at my home. I was supposed to be told if and when he got out but I wasn't and was blindsided. He sent some woman to my door to try and get me out thank God I recognized him sitting in the car . The police couldn't do anything because my protective order was only good for five years. I didn't know he was out. He never came back but I still after 26 years have nightmares. They just sneak up on me. Poor Claire. My granddaughters name is Claire. This brought back painful memories.

Emma thank you for explaining coercive control in such an easy to recognise way. I wish I had heard this at 21 - you are bob on and I recognised my younger self. I still hadn’t understood how insidious the controller was until I watched this, 30 years later. Claire’s parents remind me of my own and I didn’t realise how they were seeing the situation.
    You’re saving lives Emma ❤❤

This was a hard one. At 18, I was Claire. You described perfectly how abusers lure in people who only want their love to change and help. By the time the blinders come off, they are living in a hell they have no clue how to leave, isolated from anyone who wants to help them. I got really lucky and managed to get out, but it cost me years of my life in therapy finding the person I was again. Your advice to look beyond your feelings and into their actions is spot on! There were so many red flags that I ignored thinking I was the one who could change everything for the better. Please, if anyone reading this is in this type of relationship, get out as quickly and safely as you can!! You will not change them and it will cost you more than you have in you if you stay and could cost you your life. 😢

Oh sweetheart, I'm sorry you went through this. I've had a relationship that quickly turned violent but I was lucky in that his friends made sure he'd stay away and then I had another relationship and had a baby with someone who was very abusive though would push and shove me and keep me from leaving the room to attend to our baby. Unfortunately he was in our lives for a few years and made our lives hell. I really hope you are in a good place now and know that he was a predator and you are a good person who just believes in the good of people and absolutely did not deserve any of that. ❤

Your way of covering horrific cases is so respectful and satisfying. Standing up for victims including their loved ones is beautiful. I also ALWAYS agree with your ideas of possible ways to sentence/punish the low life perpetrators! I just wanted to add a little comment to this particular perpetrator. The image of him in the water in his bathing suit with his arms up like he has something to brag about, I think this might bring some insight into why he was so angry and had to pick on people that couldn’t defend themselves against him. He’s a tiny man and it really shows in that swimsuit pic…..barely. I’ll just leave it at that. 😉

Emma, I wish I'd known about coercive control 55yrs ago when I met my bully. He was 6'1" and I was 4'11" so I didn't stand a chance against him . The threats and bullying started within 2wks of meeting him. I was 18 and very naive, still a kid really, and out fear I married him. Had 2 lovely kids and became really submissive and afraid. Eventually started drinking to cope and addicted to tranquilizers, and after 16yrs was able to leave him, but because I was so unwell I had to leave the kids with him. Oh the agony!! I'm now 70 and clean and sober for 37yrs. 😊 . My son and daughter have nothing to do with him, haven't for yrs, and the bully is now on his 3rd marriage and from what I've heard he's controlling her too. My heart hurts for all the women in these terrible situations. RIP Claire and much love to her grieving family.❤

'you can't judge someone based on your feelings towards them, you have to judge them based on their actions' 👏👏 Very well put.
I wish someone had told me this when I was younger. It is so difficult, especially when you are young and a good person, but you have to let your logic take a front seat in those situations bc predators, abusive people use your emotion as a weapon against you. It shouldn't be that way, but it is, and putting your feelings aside to assess the real life situation could literally save your life.

I am so glad you called out the FM of Scotland and SNP on this they recently made it law that anyone who committed a crime under the age of 24 their sentence has to be towards rehabilitation and not jail regardless of the severity of the crime, meaning recently a man who at the age of 17 raped a 13 year old in a park got off with community service in the area where he and his victim lives much to the frustration of the judge. SNP are loosing support for passing some crazy laws like this as now they have taken away serious consequences to serious actions it is putting a lot of people at risk to these predators

The law in Scotland around protecting women from violent men is beyond a joke. It was while living in Glasgow my ex beat me unconscious & called for ambulance admitting to it but he never had any punishment. I was told no action could be taken because in Scotland they need a witness... So I suppose they argued I could have stamped on my own head as the evidence pointed on top of punching my own eye shut etc 🤦‍♀️. The message that sends to these peices of shit is terrifying & this poor woman was a victim of Scotlands woeful lack of providing adequate protection & also strong enough deterrents. The fact they sent this reckless violent parasite to live with a new gf speaks volumes about how little the system there gives a shit about keeping women safe. I was taken aback by how spot on the Scottish judge got it tho, reassured me there is logic somewhere in the system, but sadly it seems it takes committing a murder to get to it. My heart breaks for this family, it would have been different if he wasn't allowed to live with her xx

Around 1943 about a week after my adoptive mother's wedding in Herreid, South Dakota (population 414) her husband hit her. I didn't hear how bad. Her father immediately had the marriage annulled. She moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she worked as a waitress while pregnant with her daughter where they met my adoptive father who never hit them or me. Fast forward to Tucson, Arizona now. I live alone, don't go out after dark, don't commit crimes, and see my friends only during the day when witnesses and I have a clear view. This is Scottish-smart so I've heard. If I was married, raising children and living in a council flat in Britain I'd at least have separate beds and try for separate bedrooms. Also, be with friends and family as much as possible. Bottom line: Distance is my best friend (forever, BFF).

This case chills me to my core, the perpetrator reminds me so much of my ex, painter and decorator, drugs, violent, a coercive controller, abusive both mentally and physically. He actually injured me so bad in one assault, that our then 9 yr old son witnessed, my back was seriously injured I was partially disabled and that's when the abuse really started. I finally left him when I knew I would be killed. I put a restraining order on him for 4 years and divorced him. His next victim he slit her throat in front of her young kids. They saved her life, she got 150 stitches and a week in hospital, she left him. He has never been charged and is not in jail. He ruined my life, I lost my 7 yr job because of my injury and almost 15 years later I still have days when I'm bedridden in tears from pain. It also ruined our son's life witnessing all the abuse.
