  • “Many cities in America operate token mass transportation systems that talk in glowing terms about the future. But Austin residents have a choice right now between the past and the new lifestyle of the 70’s.” And thus begins a short film about the Austin Transit System (operated by the American Transit Corporation), where we learn details about how the transit system operates. After an introduction into the foundations of the transit system (in 1973), we go to the transit system’s new headquarters at East 5th and Pleasant Valley, where we are introduced to the services and staff at the facility. After driver training is explained we head out into the streets of Austin to learn about the transit system’s approach to routes, schedules, ridership and technology that is based on specific needs of the city of Austin and customer feedback.

Wow, as a 10 year old in 1977, I had to ride these buses home from school from Hancock Center on 45th street, then transfer downtown at 6th and Congress to south Austin. What memories.

Cool. An early version of Cap Metro. All Texas cities had different bus systems back in the day. DTS, CITRAN, HOUTRAN, ATS and SATS.

I'm amazed the 6 route was still for 12th Street even in the 70s.
Too bad Cap Metro dropped the ball for being great with ideas much later.

Look at the pride of the city to have a cutting edge transit system. Nowadays it is simply outside of political will
