I'm not sure its a helpful comparison. It get people up in arms when the IDF are for example compared to the SS. Then the argument that ensues takes attention away from the the actual events and situation and results in cries of anti-semitism which can be used as a further distraction. For example with the students protests calling for peace, the accusation of anti-semitism becomes a talking point instead of the real issues that the students are working to address. So poor strategy to make comparisons. Israel as a possibly apartheid state with its abhorrent far-right governement should be described based on its own actions and words.

Comparing the Israeli Palestinian conflict with the Holocaust is obnoxiously stupid. The Jews of Europe were completely innocent, it was a purely racist endevour aimed at their complete extermination and you could see that in the numbers. About 2/3's of German Jews either left or escaped Germany, most of the rest were killed, millions more around Europe were killed as Nazi power spread. That is what "industrial scale genocide" looks like. The Palestinian population on the other hand is and has been growing at a rate higher than that of Israel, what were camps in the 50's are dense urban areas today. European jews were not regularly killing germans, firing rockets at german cities, or calling for the genocide of germans and the abolition of the german state. The comparison is utter lunacy. You say, judge a people on how they treat the weak? Ask that of Hamas who killed over 1000 civilian men women and children and kidnapped hundreds more in one day. Look, neither side are saints here, they both have good reason to hate each other. However many wars result in large scale civilian displacement and the annexation of territory, that's not genocide, at least not in a way that can be compared to the holocaust. The reality is that this is a religious war/conflict and both sides are perpetuating it entirely willingly. As an Austrian with Nazis among my grandparents' generation and having grown up close to Linz and Mauthausen, I feel very sad to see atrocities like that happen again and again. In school, we were pretty much taught that these dark ages were the pinnacle of evil and I thought this could never possibly be repeated anytime, anywhere, as humanity had learned from its mistakes. Later, studying abroad in the US and talking to many very different people from across the World, I realized that not that many people know a lot about the Nazis. I was asked by Asians whether people in Germany still liked Hitler or a Chinese guy suggested right wing parties would be good for my country as they help keep the "race clean". Shockingly, that was only about 20 years ago in an academic environment. I realized not everyone in the World is aware of the danger and how important it is to admit the terrible crimes committed by your ancestors and tell the truth to our children for them to prevent this from happening again. It would be really sad if it actually took the likes of Herzl and Hitler for people to go through hell all over again and start to understand the difference between good and evil... 😢

I'm not sure its a helpful comparison. It get people up in arms when the IDF are for example compared to the SS. Then the argument that ensues takes attention away from the the actual events and situation and results in cries of anti-semitism which can be used as a further distraction. For example with the students protests calling for peace, the accusation of anti-semitism becomes a talking point instead of the real issues that the students are working to address. Comparing the Israeli Palestinian conflict with the Holocaust is obnoxiously stupid. The Jews of Europe were completely innocent, it was a purely racist endevour aimed at their complete extermination and you could see that in the numbers. About 2/3's of German Jews either left or escaped Germany, most of the rest were killed, millions more around Europe were killed as Nazi power spread. That is what "industrial scale genocide" looks like. The Palestinian population on the other hand is and has been growing at a rate higher than that of Israel, what were camps in the 50's are dense urban areas today. European jews were not regularly killing germans, firing rockets at german cities, or calling for the genocide of germans and the abolition of the german state. The comparison is utter lunacy.
You say, judge a people on how they treat the weak? Ask that of Hamas who killed over 1000 civilian men women and children and kidnapped hundreds more in one day. Look, neither side are saints here, they both have good reason to hate each other. However many wars result in large scale civilian displacement and the annexation of territory, that's not genocide, at least not in a way that can be compared to the holocaust.
The reality is that this is a religious war/conflict and both sides are perpetuating it entirely willingly. They have views that are utterly incompatible, and are unwilling to bend in any way that would be meaningful to achieve a lasting end to the conflict. If the Palestinians were serious about peace and co-existence they would understand that armed conflict in their situation is the means by which Israel gains the casus belli to push them out, and under those circumstances they absolutely have a right to.

As an Austrian with Nazis among my grandparents' generation and having grown up close to Linz and Mauthausen, I feel very sad to see atrocities like that happen again and again. In school, we were pretty much taught that these dark ages were the pinnacle of evil and I thought this could never possibly be repeated anytime, anywhere, as humanity had learned from its mistakes. Later, studying abroad in the US and talking to many very different people from across the World, I realized that not that many people know a lot about the Nazis. I was asked by Asians whether people in Germany still liked Hitler or a Chinese guy suggested right wing parties would be good for my country as they help keep the "race clean". Shockingly, that was only about 20 years ago in an academic environment. I realized not everyone in the World is aware of the danger and how important it is to admit the terrible crimes committed by your ancestors and tell the truth to our children for them to prevent this from happening again. It would be really sad if it actually took the likes of Herzl and Hitler for people to go through hell all over again and start to understand the difference between good and evil... 😢
