I'm Pete, I play guitar! Having fun with metal guitar doing everything from modern metal, extended range 7 strings and 8 strings to thrash metal on a good old 6 string. Riffs in the styles of other bands, shredding and lots of fun with metal music!

Melodic or Dissonant, which style won?
Thanks to Neural DSP for sponsoring the video, check out Archetype Rabea here: bit.ly/3SJkyfX
If I had to pick one or the other, I'd go melodic, as a song that is dissonant all the time just gets irritating imo. However, adding a little bit of dissonance (a nice flat2 or flat5 riff in a riff) to a mostly melodic song resolves so nicely to the more melodic bits and stops the song sounding almost too 'nice' all of the time
I enjoyed melodic more but that sweep harmonic was 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻👍🏻🤘🏻
I'd honestly just say both. Like Killswitch Engage style where they incorporate some dissonant parts for heavier sections of their songs.
Dissonant for sure for me
A melodic song but with way more shreding in the solo and a dissonant breakdown
Having dissonance build up tension in a song and then having it shattered by a beautiful melodic line is truly and experience.
100% agree :)
The between the burried and me way
i prefer the opposite, to be honest
Invent Animate
The opposite is what makes Constance by Spirit box so good. The way the end of the chorus breaks down.
Killswitch Engage vibes with the melodic and Gojira with the dissonant, both sound very nice though.
Thanks! Yeah, I was referencing KSE a lot for this haha :)
first melodic riff sounds very similar to russian band "stigmata" september song
also almost every melodic song had a small vibe of that band
maybe because of b tuning, idk
@@dubsta666 you're like 12 year old. How do you know stigmata?
@@MoonSkaEurope I mean I’m glad the 12 year old so I could find a new band. I don’t speak any languages besides English and Spanish so I probably never would’ve found this band
KSE are masters of using both together beautifully
Both of them mixed together in a song. That's greatness. The kick in the face we get when that melodic clean chorus ends and the this super heavy dissonant riff starts is priceless.
Agreed :)
To me there's no winner... Metal can be melodic and dissonant in fair proportion.
As my friend Thanos would say: "Perfectly balanced, as all things should be".
Sick video Pete. Keep it up! 🤘🏻🔥
Thanks! :)
wow, look at him flexing being friends with thanos -.-
just kidding :P there's absolute truth in your words.
Transitioning between the 2 is more effective than either in a vacuum, beautiful melodic bridge -> disgusting breakdown or Dissonant build up -> melodic release are some of the best feelings in metal
I 100% agree :)
Rational Eyes from Threat Signal
I love both styles of Metal especially when they are used together. You can't beat a solid anthemic track with a heavy breakdown. It makes the best boss music.
100 agree! :)
@@peteplaysmusic "All Alone" by Blind Witness (aka the "what the fuck is going OOONNNNN" song) is something that comes to mind. Brutal -core track with a really beautiful melodic solo section.
Dissonance wins my heart every time hands down.
Nothing wrong with some killer melody but when two or more waves interact to create additional tones there's magic to be found!
As a gorguts fan it's impossible to not choose the dissonant, it's so obscure and hypnotic
That last dissonant riff was so sick
Thanks! :)
These melodic riffs sound just like Trivium and Arch Enemy, two of my fav bands. So good to hear!
3rd melodic was very arch enemy
I don’t think any style “won”. I think both melody and dissonance played off each other perfectly to make a beautifully heavy piece of metal. Killer job
Thanks! :)
They work together perfectly. The contrast builds tension and keeps the song moving/interesting. Really good composition overall
Thanks! :)
So good man. Such a riff monster. The new Rabea plugin is so good. I've got some absolutely filthy, growling, beastial tones out of it and the synth is too much fun.
Thanks! Yeah, Synth in the Rabea plug-in is super fun. I have no idea what I’m doing, but it’s fun! :)
They merge so well together that i can't decide which one sounds better. Awesome!
Thanks! :)
If melodic is the peace, dissonant is the chaos. Combine both and we have the balance. Amazing composition!!
Thanks! :)
I’m a dissonant guy myself. My favorite metalcore band is Misery Signals because they blend melodic and dissonant guitar together masterfully. Nice video!
Man, I really like both but the melodic brings the feels.
Every part is well placed to transition into each part fluidly. Makes things flow! Love this!
Thanks! :)
This was Luke being given a hug, kicked in the teeth, given a hug, and kicked in the teeth over and over again. Awsome!!!
if i had to choose one it's dissonant 100%, but i love how hard they both hit when their context is informed by the other
Those are some sick riffs man!
Woah this whole thing is actually really good I like the way that the riffs transition it's really cool :D
Awesome video and riffs too!
Always been a fan of your riffs ,keep it up Pete :p
Thanks! :)
Both!. I think they go well together. You did a good job at moving smoothly from one onto the other.
Great video and music Pete! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Thanks! :)
I LOVE melodic metal and that little riff you played at the start was awesome
1:49 This kinda sounds like Arch Enemy, at least to me. Awesome.
Thanks! Love Arch Enemy :)
Loooove this vibe
Thanks! :)
Thanks a lot, man!
Both are nice!
Cool riffs Pete!
Thanks! :)
Really both won. they way you beautifully switced between to combine them is amazing
Never had the difference demonstrated so well, bravo
Excellent shreddage man. 10/10 🤘🤘
Thanks! :)
What about both? Incredible, fantastic and together sound great.
Absolutely, both together sound even better :)
This feels like walking into a battlefield completely unaware of what's going on until said individual gets struck, then it's a back and forth montages of the soldiers beast awaking from within!!
Shred on my man, shred on like the proud CO of guitars you are!
Love em both!!
both are fucking amazing!!! honestly cant have one without the other.
Both, combined just like in this video. Great track Pete!
Thanks! :)
I loved them both and it’s a great idea to combine them into a composition
Very nicely put together Pete 🤘 For myself, both work, just depends on my listening mood.
100% agree, and thanks! :)
When he does that sweeping with the picking hand... On the dissonant riff 2... I've never seen that before!! Wow!!
I’m not sure what it’s actually called but I just call it the Gojira Scrape as they do it all the time. It’s kinda like a rake or sweep across the strings but you play natural harmonics that you mute very quickly. Thanks for watching! :)
Love the combination of the two. I think they complement each other.
Bro subbed, that was killer 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🍻😤🦍
Thanks! :)
The winner has to be the seamless blending of both into one song! One compliments the other fantastically.
Its like In Flames vs Kataklysm
Great Video🤘
Thanks! :)
Sick vid 🔥
Thanks! :)
your dissonant riffs are fucking gorgeous, bravo!
Thanks! :)
Wow, la verdad es que de las dos formas suena demasiado genial, me encanta el sonido que produce la guitarra eléctrica, siendo está uno de mis instrumentos favoritos, excelente video, suenan muy maravilloso.
Nice riffs. I love the Amarok 7, such a great guitar
Thanks! Yep, the Amaroks are great! :)
Yeah I have the regular 6 it's great. Thinking to get the 7 too :)
Great video man. Def prefer the dissonant stuff. Love your writing dude, keep em coming!
Thanks for watching! :)
Going with dissonant all the way. Melodic just sounds too happy for me lol
Complete opposite for me lol.
Sometimes we’re all in the mood for some brutally heavy and dissonant riffing :)
You need melodeth
I go with melodic. Life is already too dissonant for me.
@@LucasdeFarias you ever listened to Unleash The Archers. No disrespect to Pete and his music. Not trying to hijack his video or anything.
Really dig this one!
Thanks! :)
Absolute riff factory man
Thanks! :)
the melodic metal parts remind me alot of in flames and carcass lovely stuff !
Either is beautifully put together
Have to say, I tapped my feet more with the dissonant part but I fully enjoyed melodic as well. They really did compliment each other.
Thanks! I’m usually more of a Melodic person too but I really like some Dissonant riffs sometimes :)
This whole video sounds like one awesome song
That whole thing was farking sick!!! Fuck yeh Pete! 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
Thanks! :)
I think the best kind of metal is the mix between the two. BIG HUGE melodic choruses and and dissonant verses breakdowns. Basically whatever will fit the song and whatever will do the best job of what you are going for.
100% agree! Alternating between the two styles works great :)
You're so talented dude
Thanks! :)
you needa good mix of both! sick video
Thanks! :)
The last dissonant riff was very big late Revocation energy. Love it.
First riff was my favourite it was like it was inspired by David guetta’s titanium combined with low tuned guitar. Awesome video
For inspiration, one of my favorite "the guitar sounds like Nintendo" solos is from Protest the Hero's song Limb From Limb
I had to leave a comment, when I discovered dissonant metal music like Gojira in the mid 2000’s it really blew me away. I would stay in a complete trance for minutes at a time 😮
DUDE! You are rockin Harley Benton! They make excellent guitars. I just got my DC custom double neck.
The Amaroks are great too! :)
Dang that’s good…that combination rocks
Thanks! :)
Very good tunes!
Thanks! :)
Yeah...hard to choose a favorite. Both have their place depending on the song. I like the dissonant a bit over the melodic, but again it depends on the song. Great stuff, Pete. I look forward to your vids.
Thanks! :)
fat props, that was sick
Awesome transition @ 0:28 🤘😀🤘
Thanks! :)
Wow... That's awesome
You absolutely killed the dissonant sections. It's hard to do melodic metal without sounding vaguely generic lol. I mean the same thing can easily be said for dissonance but your riffs were very fun and unique (:
Thanks! :)
I just like hearing them mixed
Hello Pete i really liked this video especially the third melodic riff and i want to ask you is every riff you played from some new songs of yours you don't have release yet?
Hi! These riffs aren’t specifically part of a new unreleased song but, I do sometimes go back and take riffs from previous videos and turn them into a full song. There’s definitely some riffs in here that I might return to and make a song with. Thanks for watching! :)
Oh hey! The Harley Benton Amarok BT! In red!!! I have the same guitar 😁😁😁
The Amaroks are pretty great guitars! :)
Both of course. Good musicians use both of them in there songs. Great vid
Thanks! :)
the mix of both is the way to go imo
The mix is fantastic
Thanks! :)
Us, we are the winners, every time you release a new video. Great stuff Pete!
Thanks! :)
Loved this. Dissonance (strange modes) is more interesting and contrasts the peace of the melodic.
Dissonance to Melodic is a good writing formula.
You gotta balance the chaos with the peace.
Melodic Riff 1: Plini
Dissonant Riff 1: Meshuggah
Melodic Riff 2: In Flames
Dissonant Riff 2: Gojira
Melodic Riff 3: Every power metal band ever
Dissonant Riff 3: Archspire
daaamn that was fire
Thanks! :)
Your channel makes me want to buy a lot more Harley Bentons (I only have the Ocean Flame 2)
How about Polyrhymic Vs Grooving Rhythms?
That’s cool idea, thanks! :)
@@peteplaysmusic I look forward to the vid
I LOVE BOTH!
Absolute banger all the way both styles
I’m personally more of a melodic person myself, but dagnabit can I appreciate a good dissonant riff 👍👍
Are these Harley Benton guitars still doing you proud? I've watched your videos from two years ago when you unboxed them and just purchased the 7 string, should be here in a few weeks, I would assume since you're still playing them that they must be decent! Love the videos ❤️
Yeah, the Amaroks are pretty solid guitars. The 7 string now has a 27 inch scale, so it should be even better than mine which has the regular 25.5 inch :)
@@peteplaysmusic that's really good to know actually! All the info I've seen is from when they came out so that's a shock to me actually 😁 thanks for the reply and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Now I want to hear Melodic Dissonant Metal
This is one big advirtesment of Harley Benton))
Listening to Pestilence's "Testimony of the Ancients" (1991) this week, and there are quite a few songs on there in which you can get both in the same song. There's even a song with a solo that has a Plini vibe to it (one of the last things you thought you'd hear on an old school death metal album).
(0:57) The second melodic metal riff, not gonna lie, gave me vibes of cowboys having fun riding galloping horses in the western🤠🐎. (1:49) The final melodic metal riff, give me he vibes of knights in shining armor about to head to battle⚔🏛.
Whole thing was dope
Thanks! :)
I like them both. I think they both kind of fit together as one song which is how I’m sure you did it, but there was a couple parts that I didn’t like as much in the dissonant parts, but the rhythm part in that dissonant is great and it fits very well with the melodic
Thanks! :)
His super light friendly voice coming after that amazing pseudo modes level metal song is the best part😅
Haha, thanks :)
a intercalação entre dissonante e melodico deixou a sua musica completa como um todo
