Cary was born at the turn of the 20th century, and his upbringing was far from perfect. As a child, Cary’s mother suffered from severe depression, which led to her being institutionalized by the young boy’s alcoholic father. Cary was led to believe that his mother had passed away, and didn’t learn the truth until several decades later. At that point, Cary was well on his way to becoming a famous movie star.
Cary first started appearing on Broadway before successfully auditioning with Paramount Pictures at the start of the 1930s. He made his big-screen debut in the 1932 feature This Is the Night. This would lead to bigger and better roles, with Cary eventually becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
In addition to his memorable comedic films, such as Bringing Up Baby, Cary also appeared in several thrillers from famed director Alfred Hitchcock. This partnership started with the 1941 feature Suspicion. By the time the 1940s were over, Cary had become a full-blown movie star. He would retire from the industry less than two decades later, after his third wife gave birth to the actor’s first and only child.
Despite the fact that Cary was married to five women over the course of his lifetime, rumors persisted after his death that the actor was a closeted homosexual. Maybe youi missed it, his presumed bi-sexuality which in those days wasn't widely accepted like it is today! But many in Hollywood today still have to hide their sexuality if they fear it could have any negative impact on their career! Dig a little deeper, there are hundreds of scandals of suicide, drugs, especially alcoholism in Hollywood ever since the early 1900s and the 1920s, even brutal shocking murders!!There are great books out on Hollywood Celebrity deaths, a great many died young before their time and have also had their "inner demons"! Nothing new! History repeats!

Knowing general basics of his life make me admire him more. Watched the television documentary, Becoming Cary Grant. He is an incredible example of the power of resilience. Had rough times, but his motivation, natural born talent (esp. timing) and his good looks served him well because of his motivation. What a talented guy!
Cary Grant was such a fabulous and talented actor. I was 18 when he passed away, I cried so hard, I was devastated. I grew up watching all his movies with my Grandma and Mama, such good memories!!

One of the things he did as he was "retired " was tour in events known as "Conversation with Cary Grant ". My mom ,her friend and I went to see him at La Mirada civic theater. He showed a presentation of movies he had done. Then he took questions from the audience. He talked about his life too. So handsome. That White hair became him well. There was no mistaking his voice. I am very glad I had that opportunity.
I would love to have seen that tour. Yes, he was handsome until the day he died.

How can you mistake Dylan to Dyan his 4th wife. Dyan Cannon was a fairly famous actress in the '70s even before their marriage which was a big news back then. People talked about the big age gap.

He was great in Notorious and North by Northwest. When Ian Flemming saw those movies he wrote about a man, and Ian wrote about that man with Cary Grant in his head. And he woulth liked it if Cary Grant woulth play that man, James Bond.
Cary said that he want to play in an James Bond movie for one time. But they asked him for more Bond movies. Cary was 58 when they asked him. Cary thought he was to old for that role and no more then 1 time. That was that he said that he didn't want to do it..... And so became the first Bond in 1962 Sean Connery........

Incredible, impeccable casting, including the part of Claude Rains’ mother, those amazing Hitchcock shots such as the sweeping camera finding the key turning in Ingrid Bergman’s nervous palm, and Hitch’s trick of extending the staircase on the way down, at the end, so their exit takes forever and the tension is unbearable. But whatever Hitch magic there is, the presence of Grant and Bergman has made the film timeless, they are two rare stars you can’t see acting. This is why Cary never won an award, he makes everything seem so natural, unconsidered and unrehearsed, it’s so casual and subtle, that his contemporaries couldn’t judge it as acting. He was the greatest actor of them all and one of the very few who could walk into any (decent) film today and fit right in.

I loved Cary Grant with Mae West in "She done him Wrong". He also meshed well with Hepburn in the Philadelphia Story. I love his films with Hitchcock too. Supposedly he had a relationship wirh Randy Scott, but who cares he was an amazing actor!!
I like his Hitchcock films best, and Hitchcock-inspired films like Charade. He should have made another film with Grace Kelly, she suited him perfectly.

Cary Grant was a great actor. I think he was one of my all-time favorites. And such a handsome man with a wonderful way of talking-he was his own work of art, as everyone should be. I truly loved watching him as an actor. Of course I think he had to have all the good folks that go with a good performance, but he was a constant good watch. And sure, he may have appreciated people of different sexes, most people do. I have to think this is a robot, or someone who can't read because you pronounce 'Dyan' 'DIE-ANN'...how can you get Dylan out of that?

He is a legend. That man can dress up. I called him the best dressed actor in Hollywood. He was a charming, graceful presence in his life and retired to spending his time with his daughter. A successful businessman during and after his movie career. There will always be one Cary Grant. My respect for him was always high and always be after his passing. Thanks Mr. Grant RIH. His daughter wrote a memoir about him called GOOD STUFF. In it, she does make reference to the stories about her dad's alleged gay affairs: she says that she doesn't know but that his manner with everyone was charming and flirty. Others who knew him well have said pretty much the same (Cleveland Amory, who was a friend, wrote that Grant could turn down a request for an autograph in such a way, the person felt flattered rather than snubbed.) So perhaps it was as simple as that.

Arsenic and Old Lace is how I remember him.Every Halloween I watch this movie laughing my way through it as it (to me) shows Grant at his comic best.
Most iconic actor who treated woman on screen with dignity and romancing them incomparably. Sofia Loren said she loved him. He wanted to marry her, but she was already in a relationship pending marriage, just to mention one. Watch every one of his movies when time permits. His Christmas movie, “The Bishop’s Wife” is beautiful, and never get tired of seeing it, along with most any film he is in. Disgusting that friends of the same sex have to put up with junk said about them.
I can’t stand when people try to assassinate an actor’s character after their passing! Of course the man wasn’t perfect he was human but he did his job extremely well. Kudos to him for making it that far given all that early trauma!
I loved Cary Grant, he was and still is the Best Looking Actor ever! All of his movies are great. But, there is one I really like to watch over and over. The movie is, The Bishop's Wife, which also starred David Niven, Loretta Young and Monty Woolley. It's a Christmas movie and Cary plays an angel to perfection. Check it out you are sure to love it!

Maybe not a shame. I can watch his movies a lot. Love how well he workerd with all his costars. He might not have won an Oscar bit his films live on. I can't tell you who won the golden statue last year let alone 50 yrs ago, but I can tell you Mr Grant whistles the theme songs from An Affair To Remember and Charade in his last movie Walk Don't Run. He didn't need that Oscar. He left a lasting impression from his first movie to his last and in between.

I could not care less what Cary Grant’s sexual preference was. I have always loved his movies. I secretly stayed up late at night to watch them, my mother would get so mad. He was a wonderful actor and seemed like a nice human being. It was obvious how he adored his daughter. He will always be one of my top favorites in the entertainment industry!!

I am glad Cary had a daughter to pass on his legacy. He was in deed charming on screen and can imagine he would have been very romantic in person. He married 5 times so gave marriage a chance until he got it right.
I am 74 years old so grew up knowing who he was and always thought he was a great and successful actor!

Cary Grant was one of the first high profile "stars" to stand up to the old studio system and go "independent". He chose the movies HE wanted to work on! Not just taking the ones "assigned" to him by the studio bosses or being "farned out" to OTHER studios without his consent as was common practice before "ANTI-TRUST" LAWS were enacted and enforced against them.
So that's why no oscar.....

There is something missing in this biography of Cary Grant that is not mentioned here. It wasn't that his mother had psychiatric problems that had his mother admitted in a mental asylum. What hurt and disturbed Cary Grant for years about his mother being put in a mental asylum was because she DIDN'T have psychiatric problems but instead was put there by his dad so he can marry his mistress right away. This is what shattered Cary Grant for years about how horrible his father was to his mother. His mother was put there against her will by his father and his family without a word or last goodbye to his mother. He looked for his mother and thought of her for years until he became successful enough to find her, and visit her. His mother had mental health trauma develop due to living in an asylum for decades put there against her will from her husband. Cary Grant was furious at his father for what he did. The lack of his mother in his life was hard on him. My mother read the biography and told me what she had learned from his daughter's book and how devastating that was to Cary Grant.
Exactly. I hate how some bios say that Grant had demons because Grant's mother left him as a child which is wrong! She did NOT voluntarily leave - her husband had her committed to an asylum! I would imagine that Grant, once he figured things out much, much later in adulthood, could not get over his revulsion for his father and guilt over what happened to his mother - perhaps blaming himself for not figuring things out sooner and rescuing her before she had become too damaged from her surroundings.
In my childhood I watched many movies from this actor ! My mother was crazy about him and I saw a glimpse of glimmer , and how a man should be and look ! I always wished him to have a great life and felt sad when he died ! Death is cruel , but I will always remember this man and hope even in heaven he finds happiness .

How I best remember a person's sexuality? It's largely none of my business; It's highly personal. And it's bad manners to stick my nose into it and offer opinions - which are just that - an opinion. Whatever his sexual orientation - Cary Grant was by all accounts talented and a reasonably decent person. (I've not heard otherwise.) I enjoy his legacy of entertainment.
Cary Grant was a remarkable actor. My favorite movie is An Affair to Remember. Call me the hopeless romantic.

Fascinating piece, especially for having absolutely no input from his daughter!!! Bear in mind the title is "Cary Grant's Daughter Reveals his inner demons"! Furthermore, the narrator claims that the world has finally "figured out the truth about Cary Grant's ambiguous sexual orientation". Yes, with lots of help from our current political masters who want us to be multi sexual and coloured... So tired of this. Leave out the ... stuff for your own world. There are plenty of us out here in the normal English speaking world (England, the USA and Australia, just to name the major players) who are tired of it.
The world was colored long before it was white. And now whites are far out numbered because you were always outnumbered.

It's a shame he never won an academy award. I have always liked his movies. His timings were right on in his reactions in the movies which was rare for alot of actors. Sounds like he was full boy when younger, probably in later life also. He is missed.
