- Ukrainian forces have for the first time hit a latest-generation Russian Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet at an air base inside Russia. Ukraine’s GUR defence intelligence agency said that a Su-57 jet was struck at the Akhtubinsk airfield on June 8. The site is around 589 km from the current front lines in eastern Ukraine, according to the GUR. The Ukrainian agency shared satellite pictures which it said confirmed the strike. However, it didn’t specify how the Su-57 was hit or by which unit of the Ukrainian military. Watch the video to find out more.

War is cruel, meaning that you either use it or lose it. In any case, keeping a prized and expensive stealth aircraft like this in the open is pure negligence. Back in the days of the Cold War, NATO had hangars whose walls and roofs were made of reinforced concrete. The doors were made of steel and they were climatized. I believe they could survive a nuclear blast. This means that the Russians have no one to blame but themselves for the loss of this valuable asset, which adds to the list of aircraft damaged or destroyed on the ground. The list includes Tu-22 and Tu-95 bombers, as well as A-50 AWACS aircraft.
They will learn from this. I doubt it will happen again.

It does not have to carry missiles outside air frame. It has internal weapons bay. But it also has ability , if necessary, to carry weapons outside. It's additional option and can be useful. American planes does not have that.

It's quite mindboggling the Russians still don't cover their airplanes by creating a make-shift shelter. Even though their army has adapted a lot, their airforce seems less prone to adapt. A simple large "cope-cage" as a hangar for an airplane - much like they started to do with oildepots - and a shrapnel-blanket (spall liner) on the inside of the cage (but covering it completely) would be of significant help. It would, first of all, make it much more hard to know whether there actually was an airplane in the hangar... and thus making any strike far more dubious to be worthwhile or potentially successful. Secondly, it would avoid - certainly with electronic warfare - a direct hit on the airplane. And thirdly, even if a hit was made, the cope cage, when well-enough protected, would avoid major damage from a small to medium drone to any airplane that *was* in there. Fourthly, EVEN if the airplane would still get damaged, it would be far harder for Ukraine to claim success (and far easier for Russia to deny it, even if their was some damage), resulting in better PR-management for the latter.
Sure, it wouldn't be enough protection against long-range missile attacks, but for those you have anti-air weapons, and even then, if you have enough such covered shelters on the runway, it would be really hard for an enemy to strike all of them, and it would be difficult to know if and which hangar would house an airplane, certainly if one moves them around a lot. Those covers/cages wouldn't even be all that costly neither, certainly compared to the airplanes they're protecting. So why has Russia not started with this yet? It's incomprehensible.
