  • A vlog of me making a ceramic butter dish from start to finish - can I work it out?? Do I know what I'm talking about? Will the pieces make it, and should I take one home?
Legally, I can't call this a butterbell ok, it's a french butter dish.

I'm absolutely garbage at wheel throwing but now i want to try handbuilding one of these. It's such a cute project!

I love these! Have you considered making one with a knob that is recessed into the lid so that you can invert the bell portion onto the table and it sits upright?

Smiled the whole time watching this! I'm living vicariously through other potters as my new studio is a windowless shipping container! Hi from Upper Moutere, Tasman 😊

I make the "knob" wide enough so I can set the butter bell down on the table while we're using it. I'll carve the inside out so it isn't solid. Almost everyone in the States has air conditioning, so the need for this isn't as great here as it would where houses can be hot in summer and cold in winter. But I really like making them.

My butter bell is a little too big but I fired it together and then when it came out of the kiln it was suctioned together. I wrapped it up in a towel and hit it with a mallet and it broke the suction and is perfect. I carved the word butter in the side and put some carved designs on it. I also made a mini one for my daughter. Watching your blog made me want to make more and have fun with the size and design. Thanks❤

Thanks for the inspiration. I needed a butter dish as my storebought one cracked a few months ago. Threw four yesterday, only three I'm happy with. Let's see how many turn out at the other side!

hate the feeling of water dripping down my arms too! you might want to check out a larger wristband/sweatband to go further up your arm to catch the water drips! I have them and a headband for my skincare at night and it's been a game changer :)

Thanks for the feedback! A longer vid is waaaay more effort (obviously) but if it goes down well I’ll def do more!

I’m trying to make these but kinda upside down so the bell part stays on the table and the “lid” cup just goes on top.
Then I won’t use water, and if the butter melts (because no AC in my SoCal house) then it won’t spill out all over the place.
I’ve made two attempts but didn’t love them enough to bisque yet. The measurements were really frustrating, I think I was aiming for too snug of a fit.
This video gave me inspiration to try again! Thanks 🙏

I have been on my own "butter holder" journey. The glazing conundrum is also irking me, do I glaze together etc. Mine are just being bisqued. Also, no knob on top so you can sit the "lid" on the table so everyone can partake :)

To be honest, even though one didn’t work, I think I’d still fire them like this again, but next time maybe make the bell part a little smaller

Thank you for a fantastic video 😀 This is exactly what I want to do for my first planned project! (I’m a fairly new potter)
Can I please confirm - did all 3 get fired in separate pieces but 2 worked and the one that shrank at a different rate was random?

    • @MaeCeramics
      @MaeCeramics  Před měsícem +1

Yep, all three fired next to each other rather than inside each other, 2 worked, 1 didn’t.
It wasn’t shrinkage - I was using that word wrong probably - it was more likely the one that didn’t work warped a tiny bit, and the layer of glaze on the pot and the bell just added a few precious millimetres that we needed for it to fit.

I’m a beginner potter and was wanted to make a butter bell but heard you shouldn’t leave the rim unglazed as it is porous , is it cool to glaze it like this if it is contact with food?
