Truly, I believe this is the message I want to leave you on. This all started yesterday when I was walking home and stopped in at the library. They have wifi there, and I checked my phone. Someone in my Rush discord server found a picture of a news article that said Neil had passed away, and we all assumed it was another joke article. After a bit of searching, we were wrong. The wave of shock, horror, and despair that wiped over the conversation was something that I could not replicate if I so chose to.
The minute I got home, I got to work on this video. Obviously, if I were to include EVERY worthy Neil Peart moment this video would be over 24 hours long, but I’ve tried my best to shorten it to a mere 30 or so minutes. We must remember this man for all he gave us, both laughter and sorrow. We watched him succeed. We watched him suffer great loss. But most importantly, we watched the best goddamn drummer to ever live doing what he loved.
Rush has and always will hold a great place in my life. If not for Neil’s words, I may not be here today. There have been two points in my life where I contemplated suicide. In both of those instances, Geddy’s angelic voice, Neil’s sympathetic words, and Alex’s wailing guitar were what pulled me through. In a world where it felt like there was no one who felt the struggles I did, Neil proved to me that I was not alone. That I could listen to his music as though I were talking to a therapist and all my worries would wash away, and I thank him for that.

UPDATE: WOW this video got more views than I expected. I would like to take this moment to address something.
We all know that Neil didn’t believe in a heaven or afterlife. But if you see him in heaven, reuniting with his wife and daughter, that’s perfectly acceptable too! Let’s not cause a divide over this. We should be coming together, not be divided into blinded hemispheres.

I can only wonder how many people out there are like myself at this moment, head hung low, hands folded in lap, weeping for a man we never knew except through music. I am heart broken. Of all the people in the industry, band members, songs, albums...this man meant the most. My world of music will never be the same. Condolences to everyone...
I still feel really gutted now. I've listened to Rush pretty much non-stop since he died. I feel bad being sad in a sense, because I know he would think such a notion is ridiculous, but I am really gutted. He influenced me in such a big big way and I will never forget that. All I can do is talk proudly of how brilliant he was at music, writing and generally being true to himself, and extremely humble.
I am on here because CZcams presented a song Time Stand Still, covered by the US Army Band and so I was watching a few more videos and I think I've come to the conclusion that as a writer/composer, Neal Peart's status may continue to grow and will spread out into the rest of the world of music, art and literature , far beyond just fans of the band Rush.

Rush, especially Neil, have been and will continue to be a HUGE part of and positive influence in my life 🙏🏻 Discovered them in 1977 at age 11 thanks to a childhood friend, and I wish I could thank that friend, but like so many of my childhood friends, he moved away..... Rush and Neil have been the constant ‘glue’ in my life that I could always escape to. Neil’s untimely passing absolutely devastated me 💔 😢

Yes, the irony of the outcome is awful (high intelligence then cancer of such a gift). Such an intelligent person, able to put thoughts/perspectives, places and people's existence which were put force in an attractive, engaging manner.

That which we treasure the most is the first thing that is taken from us. Yes, I am so sad that Neil’s brain was taken from him. He was a truly intelligent man, it was manifested in his drumming. The best ever. Rest In Peace, brother.

Not just a drummer. Not just a Canadian. Not just part of a three piece. An introvert, a lyricist, a world thinker. He was himself, not what people wanted him to be. This human approach made him loved by others that much more. We lost a great human being. If more people took his approach to life, our world would be a lot happier. 🥁

Neil was the only lyricist that inspired me to read books just to figure out what he was talking about. Thanks Neil.
That is the truth for me too. I normally just like musicians for their music but there was something about Neil's views on life and literature that I really liked. Like him I also rode bicycles and motorcycles. One road I travel over on both the bike and bicycle each year is Ebbett's Pass - part of Hwy 4 and not too far from Lake Tahoe. I have a picture of Neil on that road. For years I referred to it as "God's road" despite the fact I'm not religious. It has a majesty too it. The other day when I was checking to see if the road was still closed for snow, I thought of it as "Neil's Road" and I'm not sure why I thought that... But it can stay that way.

Me too! I've been crying on and off since yesterday evening when Fox news announced that he has passed away. I have a strange love for each of the members of Rush, not a creepy sort of selfish love, but a respectful kind. I didn't even know that he was battling brain cancer for three years now. I only pray that he didn't suffer, and that he is in perfect Shalom.

A statue seems almost obligatory in his honor, I sincerely hope your mayor sees the importance that Neil had on so many around the world. If it comes to a petition I'll travel from central Wisconsin to sign it.

Neil was such a private man, devoid of all trappings that most rock musicians have. I always respected fact he preferred to keep fans at arms length. What's ironic is many fans, probably felt closer to Neil than most rock stars because he was such an intelligent, down to earth articulate soul. Still trying to comprehend that he is no longer with us. He is just a generation ahead of myself. Hard to see people we grew up idolizing passing away at relatively young age. Anyhow, Thanks for putting this video together.

That was so intuitive of you state the 'hidden' things that Neil was trying to say! When he was hit by his wife and daughter both dying in 1997, I'm sure he was contemplating suicide too... I think that his new wife Carrie and his new daughter Olivia brought a new purpose in his life. I'm sure that his retirement was due to the brain cancer, but I knew nothing about it. Alex and Geddy kept the whole ordeal a secret. I applaud them for doing it. RIP Neil Peart. Semper Fidelis

The future disappears into memory, with only a moment between. Neil knew more than anyone that life is so transient and almost meaningless. Wrote about it often.
For those that feel that Neil didn't like his fans, he actually loved and respected and understood them, because he was one of them. He said many times that he loved his drumming heroes, too. Because he didn't sign autographs, go to meet-and-greets, etc., had nothing to do with his feelings towards his fans, and people in general. Instead, he was so humble that he was uncomfortable will many of the things that come with being so brilliant and so beloved by so many, namely never-ending adulation and media attention. It really is that simple. He didn't enjoy it.
And we love him even more for being so true to himself, and therefore to us...
Yeah. It’s different if he felt HE was too good for his fans. The reality was he didn’t know how to deal with his fans saying he was so amazing. People like him who strive for perfection don’t want people saying what a god their drummer he is when he’s thinking “I might have came in a millisecond fast after the bridge” There are famous people who think their fans are beneath them. Neil certainly was not one of those.
I have no idea what documentary it was in, but I’ve always loved a quote from Neil, “I didn’t want to be famous, I wanted to be good!”
Well said. I've found that many well-known people want nothing more than to be treated like normal people. (Some do ride the ego trip, but not all by any means.) Greet them politely, complement their talent, thank them for their contribution to your enjoyment. You may not be able to show anyone the handshake you received, or the sincere smile reflected back to you - but you'll always have it and know.
Michael Jordan once helped my daughter get a box of cereal off the top shelf in the grocery store when she was a toddler. My wife asked her how she managed to get it down about the time Michael came around the corner with that 1000-yard smile - when I see him around town (he comes to Wilmington less often than he used to) I just say hi and ask how he's doing. Once upon a time you could catch him at a local pool hall, where he would spend hours - until someone started going all fan-boy on him - at which point he'd politely take his leave. We have a large movie studio and actors are around all the time - they all like a bit of space.
Neil was just more up-front about his introversion. I love his music, but I think he would have been one of the great conversations of a lifetime because he was so well-read and thoughtful.
I could listen Neil Peart to talk about lawn maintenance or filing taxes.

Problem is, because a lot of older fans have only listened to debut through Moving Pictures, they assume he’s still like that.
I never used the word "Cerebral " until I started listening to him speak in interviews and such. Truly a diamond amongst the rocks.

I was lucky enough to spend some time with Neil years ago when he was in town and I was absolutely amazed at how inviting and “warm” he was to us! Not at all like I had expected. It was one of the best 15 minutes of my life! He had a way of making someone feel very important, just in normal conversation, which he even appreciated the most! RIP NEIL! Thank you for the memories!

I don't know why I'm surprised to find so many respectful, heartfelt comments on Neil/Rush-related videos. It's really lovely to see how many people have been deeply moved and wanting say something. Rush was my very first concert experience. Am thankful for the 6 times I’ve seen them. Even called in sick to work to get the chance to hop the boarder to see them @ SARSfest in Toronto in 2003.

The person in the casket has lost everything , and that is who I grieve for . My parents , gone at 69 , and Neil Peirt , still in his 60's , ready for a well earned ,long retirement he never got to enjoy . Talk about a shitty break .
You are right, there is no answer why in terms of a "higher concept" of justice. Justice or fairness are just human concepts. Nature does not give a shit to them. But humans can always learn new ways to prolongate life, as long as religion is put aside.

Emilson Pereira Leite They already have cures for all of that. It’s a money thing. I lost my wife last summer from best cancer. It was the toughest six-year fight I’ve ever had in my life. She was the strong one. It is horrible.
I've been a huge Rush fan since I first heard 2112 in '78. I saw them in '81 at the San Diego Sports Arena when I was 17, and took my son to R40 in St. Louis when he was 17. After battling stage 3 tracheal cancer all last year, I was hit pretty hard to learn Neil died of cancer. I watch a youtube video and 3 hours later... ... I enjoyed this one. Thank you
Saw him play 3 times live in the 1980s....Walked away each time thinking I saw an in-human performance .. He was a machine !!
I remember seeing him throw a stick freakishly high, and it landed perfectly in his hand without missing a beat.

I was a struggling kid growing up on the streets of a large city... I wasn’t a very good student and faced a bleak future... Rush wasn’t just a great band - yes, their music was incredible, but their lyrics transcended beyond anything I had known... I worked hard to understand the meaning of those songs... I began reading books and learning more and more... today, I have a family, 4 children and a very good job and am close to retirement... I’ve had a good life. I owe much of what I’ve become to Rush and especially to Neil Peart! Rest well and rock on, Neil!!

Unfortunately I never got to see Neil live. He's such a monster on that kit. Always innovating. Some people aren't fans of electric drums but Neil just saw a way to introduce more sounds into his percussive arsenal. A master and a student his entire life.

I'm 41 now, 100% disabled Vet after 18.5 years and can say that I've honestly shared your darkest thoughts but I can also be thankful enough to tell you I'm glad you fought and refused the darkness. As I tear up writing this, you're a complete stranger and I'd like nothing more to have a beer, listen to albums, watch some of their best concerts and keep good, decent people close. It's a true tragedy to music that we lost a "Great" but it' would've been far more tragic had the world, this world lose another decent human-being that is willing to share their darkest moments in their life. I applaud and honor your strength and bravery as well as your talent for editing by putting this together my friend. It was well done! All the best to you and the ones you truly care about.

My brother was a HUGE Peart fan.... His music, his books, his love of motorcycles.... He passed 3 months ago, he had a seizure in his sleep. He was 51.The writings on the prayer cards a his wake were the lyrics to "After Image" . . . God how I hope they cross paths on the other side...
I feel like if Neil was a teacher, his class would be the one where you have work but you will never need help on it because he does an amazing job explaining everything.

A great man and drummer , after he lost his first wife and daughter he rode his motorcycle all the way from top of North America arctic circle to the bottom of South America 55,000 miles by himself and then wrote a book about it , ...I was always was impressed with that feat....he said his baby soul needed constant motion to soothe his broken heart and It was the timeless beauty of landscapes that were millions year old that gave him perspective on how tiny our souls and lives were ....nature healed him....the professor as he was called was truly a wise old soul.....R.I.P. Pratt your music and our love will last forever

Thank you so much for this lovely tribute. Like all of you here, my heart breaks each time when I think of Neil and what his family and friends go through each day without his company or words. The lyrics to The Garden, I feel, encapsulates all that Neil and Rush stand for. And what a legacy it is and what an honour it is for us to have lived in the time of these giants of men.

Yesterday was and will for me be one of the saddest days ever, I've followed RUSH for so long like so many of you, but being a drummer of course it was Neil Peart who was always a click away.
I was fortunate to see RUSH 6 time's and every show was performed to perfection.
I read a lot of his books, the 55 thousand miles on his bike when he lost his daughter and wife, that book helped me so much. As a fan of Rush I can sit and listen for hours, and as a fan of a brilliant man I will always be grateful..

I know the feeling. A huge chunk of my youth died yesterday. I am 35 now andRush has been my favorite band since I was 14. I've seen them over 20 times and used to follow them around with my friends on road trips when they were touring. So many good memories. I've never had the death of someone I've never met effect me so much.

I have always favored the non-drummer side of Neil. He was so soft, yet confirmed in his thinking about so many things in life and death. I am confident that even so his family currently grieves their loss, they feel so surrounded by his love for life itself. He demanded nothing but perfection from himself, therefore, giving his best in everything was the norm. "How can I be excellent today" was his motto and he lived by it. His drumming will be forever the standard of excellence, but his life will forever be excellent. RIP Neil. I miss you already
When I was younger, I used to be afraid of thunder. The "boom" effect made me feel uneasy. My grandma would say to me "you know, when you hear thunder, it is someone playing drums". It calmed me a bit.
When I got the news of Neil's passing, I was in shock. Rush has been part of my life since I'm a child (thanks dad) and it broke my heart.
Now, everytime I will hear thunder, I will think of Neil playing. He will always be part of culture until the world ends.

Neil was a inspiration to us all! He’s the Best Drummer in the world to me! I never met him, or geddy or Alex, but I grew up with their music! There is No one like Rush, but my love for Niels drumming I will miss, his talent, his excellence, his being, his forcite. I love you, thank you for your wonderful performance. This video and your comments are greatly appreciated. In 1978, I was 14 and had no clue who RUSH was when a friend handed me two tickets for their A Farewell To Kings show. That concert literally set my life on a new trajectory. Before then I had no direction, after then it was all about music. When RUSH rolled through our town again in winter of 1980 (Permanent Waves), I was playing guitar and making a little pocket money gigging on weekends. In typical RUSH fashion (as I came to learn later), they chose our sleepy little New Brunswick town to kickoff a world tour. It wasn't until the R40 tour that I saw them again, in Vancouver with my 16-yr son (a Geddy Leee loving bass player). He recently called me to express his deep sadness at Neil's passing. I've had such a great life with RUSH.
Neil Peart is a genius and no one can ever truly recreate a talent that He has and he will go down as a true legend and the best drummer in the world! With a small edit to this comment Neil Peart has his own unique intricate incredibly technical style that no one else can recreate!
@Batphink Reynolds as I was an early fan of listening to Rush I never really paid too much attention who wrote the music I assume that the whole band was a part of that but then discovering that Neil Peart the drummer was riding most of the lyrics I was hella impressed with his music because the words from Rush music Still emanates to this very day with a lot of his songs

This is the first time I listened to Rush since his passing. Rush, and Neil were my biggest influences in my upbringing as a musician and as a person. First Neil's drumming is what caught my attention when I was a young aspiring drummer. Then the thought provoking lyrics. Also, the work ethic and humbleness of them all. And how a band should function. Neil's passing for me was "the day the music died". I never could bring myself to listen to Rush song after he died. Until now. And I'm very much glad I did. To hear his voice and to hear his playing rejuvenated my soul today. Closing with "The Garden" couldnt have been a more appropriate. What a swan song, for Neil and Rush. Much love to Rush and the fellow fans I've met over the years at many, many Rush concerts.
This had hit me hard. I have loved and followed Rush all my life. Seen them many times and my favorite part of a Rush concert was always the drum solo Neil did. RIP Neil

Rest in peace Professor. I'm only 32 but I grew up on RUSH. I remember we had a radio station here in Central Ohio called 107.1 The Big Wazoo. Anyways, on fridays you could call in and yell FRIIIIIIIIIIIIDAYYY! As loud as you could if you were the called picked. I remember mom dialing the number and handing me the phone, I yelled part of Friday but couldnt stop laughing so mom had to take the phone. Needless to say, I chose the song Tom Sawyer. Mr. Peart, I never got to see you or my favorite band play love, but your music will stay with me for all of my life. Rock on on the other side Professor. Hope we meet on th other side sir. The world is a lesser place without you.
Their music has been a constant in my life. Losing Neil was like losing a favorite uncle.....devastating. But when reality starts smothering me I just go back and listen to the balm that still soothes my soul.......Rush.

The name “Neil Peart” has been synonymous with great drumming for as long as I can remember. It’s the measure of how good you are i.e.
“I’m good but I’m not Neil Peart”
Or “He’s pretty good...not Neil Peart good but...” that sort of thing.
I’m a guitar player so it’s always EVH or Jimi that eventually come up but when I hear drummers talk, this man is always mentioned as the gold standard of rock drummers
But he was so much more...
Truly he will me missed but he will live on with the utmost respect from his fans and musicians...forever

Allow me to join in the sorrows of the passing of this great man. Ive shed tears about 6 times but im fairly certain neil would only want a brief display of grief and for us to move on. I'm sure geddy and alex knew about his illness yet they've been doing big things. Neil was immensely important but he wouldn't have wanted us to mourn him for long.
As a drummer, Neil taught me much, but overall, the thing he taught me most was humility. Even at the height of his talent, he sought to improve. He will always be the man I’d aspire to.

I realize now that we all felt we had that special personal connection to Neil, From digesting his beautiful eloquent writing's, We grew up with Rush an all shared the incredible experience in their musical stories. They spoke to us with real meaning, The songs! The complex and wonderful time signatures, That was all Neil ! Geddy & Alex strapped in and tried to keep up! They grew together and with each album another step! measured in our lifetime. Those are the "Sweet Memories" that Neil wrote about so many years ago. This one hurts alot, That really shows us how invested we were with Neil, Alex,Geddy. How much they meant and still mean to us. A once in a lifetime band without question. The legacy Neil left us is enormous ! Thank you...

Setting aside the amazing musical aspect of Rush we still have the amazing life lessons to be learned from Neil’s lyrics. Those lessons and thoughts are unmatched even by the most enlightened philosopher. Neil taught me what it meant to be an individualist. There is no other band and there will never be a band that gave me as much as Rush did. His passing is about the only thing that hits harder than one of his drum solos. When they finished R40 I hated the thought of a world without Rush but now we are heading into a world without Neil. It’s incomprehensible at this point.

As someone who never really knew rush or Neil Peart, but whose idol's idols are rush (namely Dream Theater) this is a surreal experience. I can see how and why Neil and Rush touched and inspired so many now legendary drummers. I will definitely start sinking my teeth into this wonderful man's work.
